The decomposition of methanol on the Ni(111) surface has been studied with the pseudopotential method of density functional theory-generalized gradient approximation (DFT-GGA) and with the repeated slab models. The adsorption energies of possible species and the activation energy barriers of the possible elementary reactions involved are obtained in the present work. The major reaction path on Ni surfaces involves the O-H bond breaking in CH(3)OH and the further decomposition of the resulting methoxy species to CO and H via stepwise hydrogen abstractions from CH(3)O. The abstraction of hydrogen from methoxy itself is the rate-limiting step. We also confirm that the C-O and C-H bond-breaking paths, which lead to the formation of surface methyl and hydroxyl and hydroxymethyl and atom hydrogen, respectively, have higher energy barriers. Therefore, the final products are the adsorbed CO and H atom.

The adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen on stepped surface (511) of nickel are studied with the embedded-atom model (EAM) method. The adsorption energy, the length of the adsorption bond and the adsorption height for a single hydrogen atom are calculated. Three kinds of stable sites are found for hydrogen adsorption. There are the double-fold bridge site B on the step edge, the three-fold hollow site H3′ on the step surface and the four-fold hollow sites H1 and H2 on the terrace surface. Compared with a hydrogen atom adsorbed on low-index (001) surface, there are two other adsorption sites near the step: the two-fold bridge site B on the step edge and the three-fold hollow site H3′ on the step surface. At the same time, the absorbability of the hydrogen atom at the site H1 is intensified. The results show that hydrogen adsorption on Ni (511) is affected by the existence of the step. The active barriers, adsorption energy and corresponding bond length for dissociation of a hydrogen molecule on the stepped surface are presented. The results show that the dissociation is easier at the bottom of the step. It is shown that the steps are the active sites for hydrogen adsorption and dissociation.

Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations have been performed to characterize the hydrogen adsorption and diffusion on the Fe(111) surface at 2/3-, 1-, and 2-monolayer (ML) coverages. It is found that the most favored adsorption site for atomic hydrogen (H) is the top-shallow bridge site (tsb), followed by the quasi 4-fold site (qff) with the energy difference of about 0.1 eV, while the top site (t) is not competitive. Furthermore, the adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H) has a high mobility, as indicated by the small diffusion barriers. The local density of state (LDOS) analysis reveals that the Fe-H (tsb or qff) bond involves mainly the Fe 4s and 4p and H 1s orbitals with less contribution of the Fe 3d orbital, while the Fe 4s, 4p, and 3d orbitals all participate in the Fe-H (top) bond. In addition, the coverage effects on the adsorption configurations and adsorption energies are addressed.

The H2O adsorption and dissociation on the Fe (100) surface with different precovered metals are studied by density functional theory. On both kinds of metal‐precovered surface, H2O molecules prefer adsorb on hollow sites than bridge and top sites. The impurity energy difference is proportional to the adsorption energy, but the adsorbates are not sensitive to the adsorption orientation and height relative to the surface. The Hirshfeld charge analysis shows that water molecules act as an electron donor while the surface Fe atoms act as an electron acceptor. The rotation and dissociation of H2O molecule occur on the Co‐ and Mn‐precovered surfaces. Some H2O molecules are dissociated into OH and H groups. The energy barriers are about 0.5 to 1.0 eV, whose are consistence with the experimental data. H2O molecules can be dissociated more easily at the top site on Co‐precovered surface 1 than that at bridge site on Mn‐precovered surface 2 because of the lower reaction barrier. The dispersion correction effects on the energies and adsorption configurations on Co‐precovered surface 1 were calculated by OBS + PW91. The dispersion contributions can improve a bit of the bond energy of adsorbates and weaken the hydrogen bond effect between adsorption molecules a little.

Density functional calculations of the adsorption of ethynylbenzene on the Au(111) surface show that, after cleavage of the C-H bond, the terminal carbon makes a strong covalent bond to the surface. The bond energy is shown to be about 70 kcal.mol(-1) with the fcc hollow site being most stable and the molecule oriented perpendicular to the surface. Adsorption without elimination of hydrogen is also possible via a hydrogen 1,2 shift to form a vinylidene surface-bound species, or opening of the C-C triple bond and adsorption through the two carbon atoms in a flat conformation. The reaction energy for formation of the surface-bound vinylidene is estimated to be 5 kcal.mol(-1) exothermic relative to the isolated ethynylbenzene and gold substrate.

Adsorption of cyclohexene and its dehydrogenation intermediates on the nAu/Pt(100) (n = 0, 1, 2 means clean Pt, one monolayer and two layers of Au covered Pt surfaces, respectively.) has been investigated by self-consistent (GGA-PW91) density functional theory combined with periodic slab model. It is found that on the clean platinum, there are two kinds of favorable adsorption sites, i.e., hollow sites and bridge sites, and the adsorption energy at the hollow site is larger than that at the bridge site. However, on the Au/Pt and 2Au/Pt surfaces, there are three kinds of adsorption sites, and the adsorption energies are alike at both the bridge site and the top site. The magnitude order of the adsorption energies is as follows: clean Pt > Au/Pt > 2Au/Pt. The configurations of cyclohexene molecule have been distorted a little during the geometry optimizations. The lengths of C–M (M = Pt or Au, on the top layer of the slab) bonds are closely related to the corresponding adsorption energies.

The thermodynamics and kinetics of the surface hydrogenation of adsorbed atomic carbon to methane, following the reaction sequence C+4 H?CH+3 H?CH2+2 H?CH3+H?CH4, are studied on Fe(100) by means of density functional theory. An assessment is made on whether the adsorption energies and overall energy profile are affected when zero‐point energy (ZPE) corrections are included. The C, CH and CH2 species are most stable at the fourfold hollow site, while CH3 prefers the twofold bridge site. Atomic hydrogen is adsorbed at both the twofold bridge and fourfold hollow sites. Methane is physisorbed on the surface and shows neither orientation nor site preference. It is easily desorbed to the gas phase once formed. The incorporation of ZPE corrections has a very slight, if any, effect on the adsorption energies and does not alter the trends with regards to the most stable adsorption sites. The successive addition of hydrogen to atomic carbon is endothermic up to the addition of the third hydrogen atom resulting in the methyl species, but exothermic in the final hydrogenation step, which leads to methane. The overall methanation reaction is endothermic when starting from atomic carbon and hydrogen on the surface. Zero‐point energy corrections are rarely provided in the literature. Since they are derived from C? H bonds with characteristic vibrations on the order of 2500–3000 cm?1, the equivalent ZPE of 1/2 is on the order of 0.2–0.3 eV and its effect on adsorption energy can in principle be significant. Particularly in reactions between CHx and H, the ZPE correction is expected to be significant, as additional C? H bonds are formed. In this instance, the methanation reaction energy of +0.77 eV increased to +1.45 eV with the inclusion of ZPE corrections, that is, less favourable. Therefore, it is crucial to include ZPE corrections when reporting reactions involving hydrogen‐containing species.

The density functional theory(DFT) and self-consistent periodic calculation were used to investigate the methanol adsorption on the Pt-Mo(111)/C surface. The adsorption energies, equilibrium geometries and vibration frequencies of CH3OH on nine types of sites on the Pt-Mo(111)/C surface were predicted and the favorite adsorption site for methanol is the top-Pt site. Both sites of valence and conduction bands of doped system have been broadened, which are favorable for electrons to transfer to the cavity. The possible decomposition pathway was investigated with transition state searching and the calculation results indicate that the O-H bond is first broken, and then the methanol decomposes into methoxy. The activation barrier of O-H bond breaking with Pt-Mo catalyst is only 104.8 kJ mol-1,showing that carbon supported Pt-Mo alloys have promoted the decomposition of methanol.Comparing with the adsorption energies of CH3OH on the Pt(111)/C surface and that of CO,the adsorption energies of CO are higher, and Pt(111)/C is liable to be oxidized and loses the activity, which suggests that the catalyst Pt-Mo(111)/C is in favor of decomposing methanol and has better anti-poisoning ability than Pt(111)/C.

The decomposition mechanisms of methanol on five different Pt surfaces, the flat surface of Pt(111), Pt‐defect, Pt‐step, Pt(110)(1 × 1), and Pt(110)(2 × 1), have been studied with the DFT‐GGA method using the repeated slab model. The adsorption energies under the most stable configuration of the possible species and the activation energy barriers of the possible elementary reactions involved are obtained in this work. Through systematic calculations for the reaction mechanism of methanol decomposition on these surfaces, we found that such a reaction shows the same reaction mechanism on these Pt‐based model catalysts, that is, the final products are all H (Hads) and CO (COads) via O? H bond breaking in methanol and C? H bond scission in methoxy. These results are in general agreement with the previous experimental observations. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thiophene adsorption on the Rh(111) surfaces has been investigated by density functional theory. The results show that the adsorption at the hollow and bridge sites is the most stable. The molecular plane of the thiophene ring is distorted, the C=C bond is stretched to 1.448  and the C-C bond is shortened to 1.390.The C-H bonds tilt 22~42oaway from the surface. The calculated adsorption geometries are in reasonable agreement with population analysis and density of states. The thiophene molecule obtains 0.74 electrons, reflecting the interaction between the lone pair of sulfur and the d-orbitals of metal. The reaction paths and transition states for desulfurization of the molecule have been investigated. The bridge adsorption structure of thiophene leads to a thiol via an activated reaction with an energetic barrier of 0.30 eV.This second step is slightly difficult, and dissociation into a C4H4 fragment and a sulfur atom is possible, with an energetic barrier of 0.40 eV.

Chlorine adsorption on small neutral, anionic, and cationic silver clusters Ag(n) (n=2-7) has been studied using the PW91PW91 density functional method. It was found that the adsorption of chlorine on the lowest-energy bare clusters does not always produce the lowest-energy complexes. In addition, the binding of chlorine can greatly change the geometries of the silver clusters in some cases. Among various possible adsorption sites, bridge site is energetically preferred for the neutral Ag(n) while top site is energetically more preferred for the anionic Ag(n) with n< or =6. For cationic clusters, adsorptions on bridge and face sites have similar binding energies, which are much larger than those on top sites. Natural bond orbital analyses show that irrespective of charge state, electrons always transfer from silver atoms to adsorbate and silver acts like alkali metals in the interaction with chlorine atom. Significant odd-even alternation patterns in the properties of the complexes have been observed: Even-electron clusters often have higher ionization energies, lower electron affinities, and higher dissociation energies than their odd-electron neighbors. It was also found that chlorine atoms bind more strongly with odd-electron bare clusters than with even-electron bare clusters. These patterns reveal that even-electron clusters are more stable than odd-electron clusters.

We have measured the initial probabilities of dissociative chemisorption of perhydrido and perdeutero cycloalkane isotopomers on the hexagonally close-packed Ru(001) and Ir(111) single-crystalline surfaces for surface temperatures between 250 and 1100 K. Kinetic parameters (activation barrier and preexponential factor) describing the initial, rate-limiting C-H or C-C bond cleavage reactions were quantified for each cycloalkane isotopomer on each surface. Determination of the dominant initial reaction mechanism as either initial C-C or C-H bond cleavage was judged by the presence or absence of a kinetic isotope effect between the activation barriers for each cycloalkane isotopomer pair, and also by comparison with other relevant alkane activation barriers. On the Ir(111) surface, the dissociative chemisorption of cyclobutane, cyclopentane, and cyclohexane occurs via two different reaction pathways: initial C-C bond cleavage dominates on Ir(111) at high temperature (T > approximately 600 K), while at low temperature (T < approximately 400 K), initial C-H bond cleavage dominates. On the Ru(001) surface, dissociative chemisorption of cyclopentane occurs via initial C-C bond cleavage over the entire temperature range studied, whereas dissociative chemisorption of both cyclohexane and cyclooctane occurs via initial C-H bond cleavage. Comparison of the cycloalkane C-C bond activation barriers measured here with those reported previously in the literature qualitatively suggests that the difference in ring-strain energies between the initial state and the transition state for ring-opening C-C bond cleavage effectively lowers or raises the activation barrier for dissociative chemisorption via C-C bond cleavage, depending on whether the transition state is less or more strained than the initial state. Moreover, steric arguments and metal-carbon bond strength arguments have been evoked to explain the observed trend of decreasing C-H bond activation barrier with decreasing cycloalkane ring size.

The chemisorption of atoms (H, N, S, O, and C) on Cu surfaces has been systematically studied by the density functional theory generalized gradient approximation method with the slab model. Our calculated results indicate that the orders of the adsorption energy are H < N < S < O < C on Cu(111) and H < N < O < S < C on Cu(110) and Cu(100). Furthermore, the adsorption energies of the given atoms on Cu(100) are larger than those on Cu(111) and Cu(110). The preferred adsorption sites are a 3-fold hollow site on Cu(111) and a 4-fold hollow site on Cu(100), but the preferred adsorption sites on Cu(110) are different for different adatoms. The energy, as well as the geometry, is in good agreement with the experimental and other theoretical data. In addition, this study focuses on the electronic and geometric properties of the metal-atom (M-A) bond to explain the difference in adsorption energies among adatoms. A detailed investigation of the density of states curves explains the nature of the most stable site. Finally, we test the effect of the coverage and find that the surface coverage has no influence on the preferred adsorption sites of the given adatoms on Cu(110) with the exception of hydrogen and oxygen, but has much influence on the value of the adsorption energy.

Building on results for the adsorption of benzene on Pt(111), the adsorption of benzaldehyde is investigated using density functional theory. Benzaldehyde is found to chemisorb preferentially with its aromatic ring in the flat-lying bridge geometry that is also preferred for benzene. Across the investigated geometries, adsorption is homogeneously weakened compared to corresponding benzene geometries. This is found to be true for very different adsorption modes, namely, η(6) and η(8) modes, the latter having metal atoms inserted in the carbonyl bond. Reorientation and diffusion of benzaldehyde is found to have low energy barriers. Aggregation of molecules in dimers bound by aryl C-H···O hydrogen bonds is investigated, and specific configurations are found to be up to 0.15 eV more favorable than optimally configured, separated adsorbates. The binding is significantly stronger than what is found for gas phase dimers, suggesting an enhancing effect of the metal interaction.

The identity and reversibility of the elementary steps required for catalytic combustion of dimethyl ether (DME) on Pt clusters were determined by combining isotopic and kinetic analyses with density functional theory estimates of reaction energies and activation barriers to probe the lowest energy paths. Reaction rates are limited by C-H bond activation in DME molecules adsorbed on surfaces of Pt clusters containing chemisorbed oxygen atoms at near-saturation coverages. Reaction energies and activation barriers for C-H bond activation in DME to form methoxymethyl and hydroxyl surface intermediates show that this step is more favorable than the activation of C-O bonds to form two methoxides, consistent with measured rates and kinetic isotope effects. This kinetic preference is driven by the greater stability of the CH3OCH2* and OH* intermediates relative to chemisorbed methoxides. Experimental activation barriers on Pt clusters agree with density functional theory (DFT)-derived barriers on oxygen-covered Pt(111). Measured DME turnover rates increased with increasing DME pressure, but decreased as the O2 pressure increased, because vacancies (*) on Pt surfaces nearly saturated with chemisorbed oxygen are required for DME chemisorption. DFT calculations show that although these surface vacancies are required, higher oxygen coverages lead to lower C-H activation barriers, because the basicity of oxygen adatoms increases with coverage and they become more effective in hydrogen abstraction from DME. Water inhibits reaction rates via quasi-equilibrated adsorption on vacancy sites, consistent with DFT results indicating that water binds more strongly than DME on vacancies. These conclusions are consistent with the measured kinetic response of combustion rates to DME, O2, and H2O, with H/D kinetic isotope effects, and with the absence of isotopic scrambling in reactants containing isotopic mixtures of 18O2-16O2 or 12CH3O12CH3-13CH3O13CH3. Turnover rates increased with Pt cluster size, because small clusters, with more coordinatively unsaturated surface atoms, bind oxygen atoms more strongly than larger clusters and exhibit lower steady-state vacancy concentrations and a consequently smaller number of adsorbed DME intermediates involved in kinetically relevant steps. These effects of cluster size and metal-oxygen bond energies on reactivity are ubiquitous in oxidation reactions requiring vacancies on surfaces nearly saturated with intermediates derived from O2.

Transition state analyses have been carried out within a density functional theory setting to explain and quantify the distinctly different ways in which hydrogen and methyl terminations serve to protect silicon surfaces from the earliest onset of oxidation. We find that oxidation occurs via direct dissociative adsorption, without any energy barrier, on Si(111) and reconstructed Si(001) that have been hydrogen terminated; oxidation initiates with a barrier of only 0.05 eV on unreconstructed Si(001). The commonly measured protection afforded by hydrogen is shown to derive from a coverage-dependent dissociation rate combined with barriers to the hopping of adsorbed oxygen atoms. Methyl termination, in contrast, offers an additional level of protection because oxygen must first undergo interactions with these ligands in a three-step process with significant energy barriers: adsorption of O(2) into a C-H bond to form a C-O-O-H intermediate; decomposition of C-O-O-H into C-O-H and C=O intermediates; and, finally, hopping of oxygen atoms from ligands to the substrate.
