Using small molecules in polymer matrices is common in applications such as (i) plasticizing polymers to modify the glass transition and mechanical properties and (ii) dispersion of photoactive or electroactive small molecules in polymer matrices in organic‐electronic devices Aggregation of these small molecules and phase separation leading to crystallization often cannot be morphologically controlled. If these are designed with self‐assembling codes such as hydrogen bonding or aromatic interactions, their phase separation behavior would be distinctly different. This review summarizes the studies on morphologies in such situations, such as (i) sub‐surface assembly in polymer matrices, (ii) controlled polymerization‐induced phase separation to create polymer blends, (iii) using the polymer to direct the assembly of small molecules in liquid crystalline devices, (iv) functionalizing a polymer with self‐assembling small molecules to cause organo‐gelation which the polymer itself would not by itself, and (v) using such systems as templates to create porous polymer structures. Organic–inorganic hybrids using polymers as templates for nanostructures and imprinted porous membranes is an emerging area. Since self‐assembly is one of the dominating area of research with respect to both small molecules, polymers as well as the combination of the two, this review summarizes the studies on the aforementioned topics. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphology of transcrystalline isotactic polypropylene under tensile stress was studied with wide‐angle synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. The strain was apparently generated predominantly within the amorphous phase because no change in the crystal structure or in the orientation of the lamellae was detected. The results are interpreted in terms of anchoring of the transcrystalline layer to the fiber surface, and the possible consequences of these morphological features on the mechanical properties of the aramid–polypropylene composite as a whole are discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article describes the oriented crystallization of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) in uniaxially oriented blends with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Uniaxially drawn films of PLLA/PVDF blend with fixed ends were heat‐treated in two ways to crystallize PLLA in oriented blend films. The crystal orientation of PLLA depended upon the heat‐treatment process. The crystal c‐axis of the α form crystal of PLLA was highly oriented in the drawing direction in a sample cold‐crystallized at Tc = 120 °C, whereas the tilt‐orientation of the [200]/ [110] axes of PLLA was induced in the sample crystallized at Tc = 120 °C after preheating at Tp = 164.5–168.5 °C. Detailed analysis of the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) indicated that the [020]/ [310] crystal axes were oriented parallel to the drawing direction, which causes the tilt‐orientation of the [200]/ [110] axes and other crystal axes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggested that oriented crystallization occurs in the stretched domains of PLLA with diameters of 0.5–2.0 μm in the uniaxially drawn films of PVDF/PLLA = 90/10 blend. Although the mechanism for the oriented crystallization of PLLA was not clear, a possibility was heteroepitaxy of the [200]/[110] axes of the α form crystal of PLLA along the [201]/[111] axes of the β form crystal of PVDF that is induced by lattice matching of d100(PLLA) ≈ 5d201(PVDF). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A quantitative study was undertaken of the anisotropy of low‐strain mechanical behavior for specially oriented polyethylene with controlled crystalline and lamellar orientation. The samples were prepared by the die drawing of injection‐molded rods of polyethylene and annealing. This produced a parallel lamellar structure for which a simple, three‐dimensional composite laminate model could be used to calculate the expected anisotropy. Experimental data, including X‐ray strain measurements of the lateral crystalline elastic constants, showed good quantitative agreement with the model prediction. The X‐ray strain measurements confirmed that the amorphous regions exert large constraints on the crystalline phase in the lateral directions, where an order of magnitude difference was found between the measured apparent lateral crystalline compliances in the lamellar‐stack sample and the expected values for a perfect crystal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Traditional methods for preparing hydrogels with specific morphology need molds with different shapes, which should bring about a complicated process. In order to control the size and morphology of hydrogels conveniently, a new simple synthesis method was advanced to prepare the gels. In this method, the prepolymer solution achieves diffusion in the interface between the upper oil phase and lower hydrogel matrix, which constitutes a three‐phase system, and the morphology of prepared gels was determined by the balanced diffusion status of the prepolymer solution. Hence, through controlling the composition and character of the three different phases in this system, the balanced diffusion status could be adjusted because of the changed interaction acting on the prepolymer solution diffused in the phase interface. The common rule with regards to the resulting morphology of prepared gels was investigated by surface tension analysis. The results prove that this synthetic method is feasible in preparing many kinds of hydrogels with controllable morphology as a common approach.  相似文献

Blends of poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP‐b‐PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self‐assembled nanostructures of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A type of bi‐triethoxysilane endcapped polyurethane/urea (SPU) with well‐defined structure was synthesized through the reaction of polyethylene glycol (PEG), 2, 4‐toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and bis‐[trimethoxysiylpropyl]amine (DB‐520). The structure of the resultant product was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR). Different SPU nanoparticles were obtained with the assistance of hydrogen ion, and their morphologies were characterized by combination of transmission microscopy (TEM) and FT‐IR. The results showed that with increasing the concentration of hydrogen ions, the ratio of condensation accordingly increased, accompanying with the nanoparticle's morphology change from sphere to rod. Furthermore, the dispersion mechanism of SPU chains in protonic solution and the arrangement of molecular chains in hybrid particles were proposed. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report on our serendipitous finding of the anomalous behavior of a novel liquid crystalline (LC) molecule U H/H , containing a U‐shaped handle. While U H/H itself shows a bicontinuous cubic (Cubbi) phase, U H/H in the presence of pyrene molecules as an external guest forms a hexagonal columnar (Colh) phase without phase separation. Interestingly, even when the pyrene molecules were covalently attached to U H/H ( U Py/Py ), the molecule exhibited a Colh phase, with a similar columnar geometry to that of U H/H mixed with pyrene molecules (1–4 equiv.). This result means that no matter how the pyrene moieties are incorporated in the LC system, the resultant material exhibited a similar molecular assembly with a columnar geometry. This finding is interesting because U H/H and pyrene molecules do not seem to have specific interactions or shape complementarity to form a columnar assembly, as in the case of U Py/Py . © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel polyurethanes (PUs) based on 2,2′‐[ethane‐1,2‐diylbis(nitrilomethylylidene)]diphenol and 2,2′‐[hexane‐1,6‐diylbis(nitrilomethylylidene)]diphenol as hard segments containing four aromatic diisocyanates (4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate, toluene 2,4‐diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate, and hexamethylene diisocyanate) have been prepared. Fourier transform infrared, UV spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis have been used to determine the structural characterization and thermal properties of the segmented PUs. All the PUs contain domains of both semicrystalline and amorphous structures, as indicated by X‐ray diffraction. The acoustic properties have been calculated with the group contribution method. Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on all the PUs to estimate the cohesive energy density and solubility parameter values, which compare well with the values calculated with the group contribution method. Furthermore, the simulation protocols have been applied to the PUs to produce X‐ray diffraction plots to determine the phase morphology of the PUs. The surface properties of the PUs have been estimated from the simulation protocols. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 6032–6046, 2006  相似文献

Oriented β‐phase films were obtained by utilizing two different techniques: conventional uniaxial drawing at 80 °C of predominantly α‐phase films, and by drawing almost exclusively β‐phase films obtained by crystallization at 60 °C from dimethylformamide (DMF) solution with subsequent pressing. Wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and pole figure plots showed that with the conventional drawing technique films oriented at a ratio (R) of 5 still contained about 20% of phase α, a crystallinity degree of 40% and β‐phase crystallographic c ‐axis orientation factor of 0.655. Drawing at 90 °C and with R = 4 of originally β‐phase films results in exclusively β‐phase films with crystallinity degree of 45% and orientation factor of 0.885. Crystalline phase, crystallinity degree, and crystallographic c‐axis orientation factor of both phases were also determined for α‐phase oriented films obtained by drawing α‐phase films at 140 °C. For films drawn at 140 °C the α to β phase transition drops to about 22%. Reduction in crystallinity degree with increasing R is more pronounced at draw temperature of 140 °C compared with 80 °C. Moreover, for both phases the c ‐axis orientation parallel to the draw direction is higher at draw temperature of 140 °C than at 80 °C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics and morphology of PEN/PET copolyesters were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), time‐resolved small‐angle X‐ray scattering (TR‐SAXS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Avrami exponents obtained using DSC were approximately 3 for homo PEN and 4 for all the copolyesters. The 3‐parameter Avrami model was successfully fitted to the invariants with respect to the time obtained from TR‐SAXS, and the exponent values were similar to those obtained from DSC. Moreover, the Avrami rate constants obtained from TR‐SAXS showed marked temperature‐sensitive decreases in all samples, like those obtained from DSC. This indicates that not only could changes in morphological parameters be obtained from the analysis of TR‐SAXS data but also crystallization kinetics. The changes in the morphological parameters determined from the SAXS data indicate that the minor components, dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) segments, are rejected into the amorphous phase during crystallization. In the TEM study, copolyesters crystallized at temperature above 240 °C grew into both the α‐ and β‐form, although 240 °C is the optimum condition for the β‐form crystal. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solidification of polymer melts in practical processing such as extrusion, injection molding and blow molding can significantly influence the inner structure and performance of final products. The investigation of its mechanism has both scientific and industrial interests. In the study, the three‐dimensional mathematical model is developed for the simulation of morphology variation in the solidification of polymer melts with amorphous and semi‐crystalline phases. The amorphous phase is simulated as the finite extensible nonlinear elastic dumbbell with a peterlin closure approximation (FENE‐P) fluid and the semi‐crystalline phase is approximated as rigid rods that grow and oriented in the flow field. The model of amorphous phase and semi‐crystalline phase are coupled through the stress and momentum balance and the feedback of crystallinity to the system relaxation time. The evolution of crystallization kinetics process are described by using a set of Schneider equation that discriminating the relative roles of the thermal and the flow effect on the crystallization behavior. With the standard Galerkin formulation adopted as basic computational framework, the discrete elastic viscous stress splitting algorithm in cooperating with the streamline upwinding approach serves as a relatively robust numerical scheme by using penalty finite element–finite difference simulation with a decoupled solving algorithm. The proposed mathematical model and numerical method have been successfully applied to the investigation of solidification of polymer melts in the extrusion process. The variations of orientation and crystallization morphology during the solidification process are further discussed. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Based on a biomimetic conception, nano‐hydroxyapatite (n‐HA)/polyamide66 (PA66) composite scaffolds were prepared with anisotropic properties both in morphology and mechanical behavior. A novel improved thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique was developed to generate orientation‐structured scaffolds for tissue engineering. The physiochemical, morphological, and mechanical properties of the resultant scaffolds were evaluated. According to the results, the improved TIPS method exhibited good processability and reproducibility and enabled the composite scaffolds to have a high content of inorganic fillers. The morphological study proved that the n‐HA/PA66 scaffolds exhibited unidirectional microtubular architecture with high porosity (ca. 80–85%) and an optimal pore size ranging from 200 to 500 μm. Besides, the effect of n‐HA content on the morphology of the scaffolds was studied, and the results indicated that the obtained scaffolds presented an improvement in anisotropic morphology with increase of n‐HA content. The anisotropy was also evaluated in the mechanical properties of the scaffolds, that is, the longitudinal compressive strength and modulus were ~1.5 times of the transverse ones. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of molecular orientation on the crystallization and polymorphic behaviors of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and sPS/poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) blends were studied with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry. The oriented amorphous films of sPS and sPS/PPO blends were crystallized under constraint at crystallization temperatures ranging from 140 to 240°C. The degree of crystallinity was lower in the cold‐crystallized oriented film than in the cold‐crystallized isotropic film. This was in contrast to the case of the cold crystallization of other polymers such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) and isotactic polystyrene, in which the molecular orientation induced crystallization and accelerated crystal growth. It was thought that the oriented mesophase was obtained in drawn films of sPS and that the crystallization of sPS was suppressed in that phase. The WAXD measurements showed that the crystal phase was more ordered in an sPS/PPO blend than in pure sPS under the same annealing conditions. The crystalline order recovered in the cold‐crystallized sPS/PPO blends in comparison with the cold‐crystallized pure sPS because of the decrease in the mesophase content. The crystal forms depended on the crystallization temperature, blend composition, and molecular orientation. Only the α′‐crystalline form was obtained in cold‐crystallized pure sPS, regardless of molecular orientation, whereas α′, α″, and β′ forms coexisted in the cold‐crystallized sPS/PPO blends prepared at higher crystallization temperatures (200–240°C). The β′‐form content was much lower in the oriented sPS/PPO blend than in the isotropic blend sample at the same temperature and composition. It was concluded that the oriented mesophase suppressed the crystallization of the stable β′ form more than that of the metastable α′ and α″ forms during the cold crystallization of sPS/PPO blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work the synthesis of poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) diblock glycopolymer and poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMAGl‐b‐PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) was performed via atom transfer radical polymerization. Monofunctional and difunctional poly(butyl acrylate) macroinitiators were used to synthesize the well‐defined diblock and triblock glycopolymers by chain extension reaction with the glycomonomer HEMAGl. The self‐assembly of these glycopolymers in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microcopy, showing the coexistence of spherical micelles and polymeric vesicles. In addition, the biomolecular recognition capacity of these micelles and vesicles, containing glucose moieties in their coronas, was investigated using the lectin Concanavalin A, Canavalia Ensiformis, which specifically interacts with glucose groups. The binding capacity of Concanavalin A with glycopolymer is influenced by the copolymer composition, increasing with the length of HEMAGl glycopolymer segment in the block copolymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numerical self‐consistent field (SCF) lattice computations allow a priori determination of the equilibrium morphology and size of supramolecular structures originating from the self‐assembly of neutral block copolymers in selective solvents. The self‐assembly behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PEO‐PCL) block copolymers in water was studied as a function of the block composition, resulting in equilibrium structure and size diagrams. Guided by the theoretical SCF predictions, PEO‐PCL block copolymers of various compositions have been synthesized and assembled in water. The size and morphology of the resulting structures have been characterized by small‐angle X‐ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and multiangle dynamic light scattering. The experimental results are consistent with the SCF computations. These findings show that SCF is applicable to build up roadmaps for amphiphilic polymers in solution, where control over size and shape are required, which is relevant, for instance, when designing spherical micelles for drug delivery systems © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone was realized in the presence of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) with Mn = 1000 and 2000, using Zn(La)2 as catalyst. The resulting PCL‐PEG diblock copolymers with CL/EO repeat unit molar ratios from 0.2 to 3.0 were characterized by using DSC, WAXD, SEC, and 1H NMR. The crystal phase of PCL blocks exist in all polymers, and the crystallization ability of PCL blocks increases with CL/EO ratio. PEG blocks are able to crystallize for copolymers with CL/EO below 1.0 only. Melt crystallization results were analyzed with Avrami equation. The Averami exponent n is around 3.0 in most cases, in agreement with heterogeneous nucleation with three dimensional growth. The morphology of the crystals was observed by using POM. Rod‐like crystals were found to grow in 1, 3 or 2, 4 quadrants for samples with low molecular weights. In the case of a copolymer with Mn,PEG = 2000 and Mn,PCL = 800, PEG blocks could crystallize and grow on PCL crystals after PCL finished to form rod‐like crystals, leading to formation of poorly or well structured spherulites. The spherulite growth rate (G) was determined at different crystallization temperatures (Tc) ranging from 9 to 49 °C. All the copolymers present a steady G decrease with increasing crystallization temperature due to lower undercooling. On the other hand, increase of CL/EO ratio leads to increase of G in the same Tc range. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 286–293, 2010  相似文献

A well‐defined (PEO‐PS)2‐PLA miktoarm terpolymer ( 1 ) was synthesized by stepwise click reactions of individually prepared poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polystyrene (PS, polymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization), and polylactide (PLA, polymerized by ring‐opening polymerization) blocks. As characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and small‐angle X‐ray scattering techniques, the terpolymer self‐assembled into a hexagonal columnar structure consisting of PLA/PEO cylindrical cores surrounded by PS chains. In contrast, the ion‐doped sample ( 1‐Li+ ) with lithium concentration per ethylene oxide = 0.2 exhibited a three‐phase lamellar structure, which was attributed to the microphase separation between PEO and PLA blocks and to the conformational stabilization of the longest PLA chain. The two‐phase columnar morphology before the ion doping was used to prepare a nanoporous material. PLA chains in the cylindrical core region were hydrolyzed by sodium hydroxide, producing nanopores with a pore diameter of about 14 nm. The resulted nanoporous material sank to the bottom in water, because of water‐compatible PEO chains on the walls. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

The structures of four halogenated N,2‐diarylacetamides are reported and compared with a range of analogues. N‐(4‐Chloro‐3‐methylphenyl)‐2‐phenylacetamide, C15H14ClNO, (I), and N‐(4‐bromo‐3‐methylphenyl)‐2‐phenylacetamide, C15H14BrNO, (II), are isostructural in the space group P. The molecules of (I) and (II) are linked into chains of rings by a combination of N—H...O and C—H...π(arene) hydrogen bonds. The molecules of N‐(4‐chloro‐3‐methylphenyl)‐2‐(2,4‐dichlorophenyl)acetamide, C15H12Cl3NO, (III), and N‐(4‐bromo‐3‐methylphenyl)‐2‐(2‐chlorophenyl)acetamide, C15H13BrClNO, (IV), are linked into simple C(4) chains by N—H...O hydrogen bonds, but significant C—H...π(arene) interactions are absent. The N‐aryl groups in compounds (III) and (IV) adopt a different orientation, by ca 180°, from that of the corresponding groups in compounds (I) and (II), but otherwise the conformations of (I)–(IV) are very similar. Comparisons are drawn between compounds (I) and (IV) and a range of analogues of the type R1CH2CONHR2, where R2 represents a halogenated aryl ring and R1 represents either another halogenated aryl ring or a naphthalen‐1‐yl unit.  相似文献
