We investigate a doubly resonant optical cavity containing a Kerr nonlinear medium that couples two modes by a cross phase modulation. One of these modes is driven by a single photon pulsed field, and the other mode is driven by a coherent state. We find an intrinsic phase noise mechanism for the cross phase shift on the coherent beam which can be attributed to the random emission times of single photons from the cavity. An application to a weak nonlinearity phase gate is discussed.  相似文献

We investigate the enhanced Kerr nonlinearities in four-level atomic vapors driven by a coupling, probe and microwave fields. Under the optical one-photon and two-photon resonant conditions, the linear and nonlinear responses of the weak probe field can be modified by the cross talk among optical and microwave transitions. The enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can form bright optical solitons of the probe field.  相似文献

We investigate self and cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four level quantized graphene atomic medium. The absorption, dispersion, transmission and subluminal/superluminal behaviors of a probe light field are studied. An amplification of the probe light field is observed in the absorption spectrum. The normal and anomalous slope of dispersion is also investigated at the positive/negative absorption region. It is shown that Kerr nonlinearity invert and enhance the subluminal/superluminal behaviors of the pulse and self-Kerr effect is found to be more subluminal/superluminal as compared to cross-Kerr effect. The results show significant applications in information storage, self and cross phase modulation and lasing without inversion.  相似文献

Nonreciprocal microwave devices, in which the transmission of waves is non-symmetric between two ports, are indispensable for the manipulation of information processing and communication. In this work, we show the nonreciprocal microwave transmission in a cavity magnonic system under the joint mechanism of phase modulation and magnon Kerr nonlinearity effect. In contrast to the schemes based on the standard phase modulation or magnon Kerr nonlinearity, we find that the joint mechanism enables the nonreciprocal transmission even at low power and makes us obtain a high nonreciprocal isolation ratio. Moreover, when two microwave modes are coupled to the magnon mode via a different coupling strength, the presented strong nonreciprocal response occurs, and it makes the nonreciprocal transmission manipulating by the magnetic field within a large adjustable range possible, which overcomes narrow operating bandwidths. This study may provide promising opportunities to realize nonreciprocal structures for wave transmission.  相似文献

We investigate quasi-Bragg-matched counterpropagating spatial solitons in a reflection grating in the presence of a longitudinally modulated Kerr nonlinearity. The physical interplay of linear reflection and Kerr self-focusing with the modulation in the nonlinearity yields a variety of elaborate self-action mechanisms. We first analytically predict the existence of symmetric soliton pairs supported by a pure Kerr-like effective nonlinearity. We then analytically derive two families of solitons, associated with the linear grating eigenmodes, supported by an effective "incoherent" Kerr-like coupling arising from the exact balance between the modulation in the nonlinearity and the Kerr interaction due to beam interference.  相似文献

We derive an equation that describes the nonlinear operation of a Fabry-Perot resonator with a large group index waveguide. Specifically, a silicon photonic crystal microcavity with two-photon-excited free carrier nonlinearity and Kerr nonlinearity is assumed. The equation clearly explains the bistability of the device and the reduction of the required pump energy for a specific nonlinear phase shift at an appropriate phase detuning from the resonance. We present a simple procedure to predict the required optical pump energy for the modulation and the resulting modulation depth by use of the equation and the device parameters.  相似文献

We develop a hybrid scheme of cross phase modulation based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and active Raman gain (ARG) in a multi-level atomic medium. The cross phase modulation, with low loss and without noise, is demonstrated in a room-temperature 85Rb vapor. We show that a π radian nonlinear Kerr phase shift of the signal light relative to a reference light is observed when the signal light is modulated by the phase control field with the low light intensity. We also show that the linear and the third-order absorption can be eliminated via the Raman gain, and the phase noise of the signal light can be ignored when the phase control light is applied in this hybrid scheme.  相似文献

We consider the combined effects of amplified spontaneous emission noise, optical Kerr nonlinearity, and chromatic dispersion on phase noise in an optical communication system. The effect of amplified spontaneous emission noise and Kerr nonlinearity were considered previously by Gordon and Mollenauer [Opt. Lett. 15, 1351 (1990)], and the effect of nonlinearity was found to be severe. We investigate the effect of chromatic dispersion on phase noise and show that it can either enhance or suppress the nonlinear noise amplification. For large absolute values of dispersion the nonlinear effect is suppressed, and the phase noise is reduced to its linear value. For a range of negative values of dispersion, however, nonlinear phase noise is enhanced and exhibits a maximum related to the modulation instability found in amplitude fluctuations. Nonlinear phase noise is quenched by these effects even in dispersion-compensated systems; the degree of suppression is sensitively dependent on the dispersion map. We demonstrate these results analytically with a simple linearized model.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrated that both the electronic Kerr effect and the molecular alignment in gaseous molecules could be applied as transient gates to diagnose 400 nm target pulses. Their birefringence dissimilarity was clearly visualized by the measured spectrogram and retrieved gate function. In the atomic gas argon, a relatively weak and instantaneous cross phase modulation within the pulse duration was observed, while in the molecular gas N(2), the delayed rotational Raman excitation played a dominative role.  相似文献

Recently it was shown that in quasi-phase-matched quadratic media the average intensities are subject to an induced Kerr effect. We analytically study the influence of this induced cubic nonlinearity on the amplitude and phase modulation of the fundamental wave and predict efficient all-optical switching.  相似文献

The effect of quantum interference from incoherent pump field on the Kerr nonlinearity of V- and Lambda-type three-level systems is investigated. It is found that enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be obtained via quantum interference of incoherent pump field. It is also demonstrated that the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is located in the reduced-absorption region. The enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity is attributed mainly to the presence of extra atomic coherence induced by quantum interference from incoherent pump field.  相似文献

基于非线性耦合模方程,研究了非线性管理光纤光栅中的调制不稳定性,得到了调制不稳定性的色散关系。与常规的非线性光纤光栅相比,在非线性管理光纤光栅中,克尔非线性的变化改变了调制不稳定性增益谱的谱宽和幅度,并导致新的不稳定性区域的出现:在反常色散区,原来关于零波数对称的两个旁瓣随着克尔非线性变化的增加其增益幅度递减至零,在经历了一段无增益区域之后,又逐渐形成了在零波数附近区域的一个新的单峰;而在正常色散区,除了原来的两个增益区域之外,零波数附近出现了新的增益区,增益的幅度随克尔非线性变化的增加而递增。可见,非线性管理光纤光栅给调制不稳定性的产生提供了更多的空间。  相似文献

In this article,we review recently achieved Kerr effect progress in novel liquid crystal(LC) material:vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal(VADHFLC).With an increasing applied electric field,the induced inplane birefringence of LCs shows quadratic nonlinearity.The theoretical calculations and experimental details are illustrated.With an enhanced Kerr constant to 130 nm/V2,this VADHFLC cell can achieve a 2π modulation by a small efficient electric field with a fast response around 100 μs and thus can be employed in both display and photonics devices.  相似文献

A scheme for enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity with vanishing linear and nonlinear absorption in a three-level ladder-configuration n-doped semiconductor quantum well is proposed. We study the Kerr nonlinearity associated with cross-phase modulation based on electromagnetically induced transparency in asymmetric double quantum wells. It is shown that, different from atomic system, not only the nonlinear dispersion and absorption but also the linear absorption depends on the relative phase of the laser fields because of the Fano interference. By choosing the parameters appropriately, large cross-phase modulation with nearly vanishing two-photon absorption, even π phase shift with single photon level, could be achieved in the asymmetric quantum wells.  相似文献

The linear and nonlinear response of a driven four-level Λ-type atomic system with two fold lower-levels with three driving fields is investigated. It is found that the giant Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved just by tuning the intensity of coupling fields. Maximal Kerr nonlinearity with zero linear and nonlinear absorption enters the EIT window. Also it is found that the relative phase between applied fields can change the Kerr nonlinearity behavior.  相似文献
