The heat capacity, C(p), and enthalpy and entropy change of alpha-cyclodextrin, H(2)O, and 4-methylpyridine solutions have been studied during their freezing on heating, isothermal freezing, and the solid's melting on cooling. Freezing occurs in several endothermic steps on heating to 383 K and alpha-cyclodextrin rich solutions freeze in four steps. The melting rate becomes slower with decrease in temperature and its steps merge. Decreasing the amount of alpha-cyclodextrin decreases the C(p) change on freezing. The endothermic freezing phenomenon differs from freezing of a pure liquid and is attributed to formation of a solid inclusion compound and its incongruent way of exothermic melting.  相似文献

We analyze the C(p)-T data for the glassy state of eight materials of varied molecular interactions and structures to investigate how the use of the C(p)d ln T integral in the time-dependent (nonreversible) thermodynamic path between a liquid and glass affects our estimates of the entropy. Since the change in entropy on such a path cannot be determined, we estimate the upper and lower values of the change, Δσ, from the C(p)d ln T integral. For the same rates of cooling and heating and without annealing, Δσ on the cooling path is negligibly different from that on the heating path. The difference is ~1∕60th-1∕25th of the lowest known value of the residual entropy and even less than the configurational entropy of the supercooled liquid at its kinetic freezing temperature. Thus use of the C(p)d ln T integral in the nonreversible path does not introduce significant errors in estimating the residual entropy. Dynamic C(p) data cannot be used to infer that configurational entropy decreases on glass formation. Time dependence of the C(p)-T path has little consequence for reality of the residual entropy.  相似文献

We report a thermodynamic study of the formation of tetrahydrofuran clathrate hydrate by explosive crystallization of water-deficient, near stoichiometric, and water-rich solutions, as well as of the heat capacity, C(p), of (i) supercooled tetrahydrofuran-H2O solutions and of the clathrate hydrate, (ii) tetrathydrofuran (THF) liquid, and (iii) supercooled water and the ice formed on its explosive crystallization. In explosive freezing of supercooled solutions at a temperature below 257 K, THF clathrate hydrate formed first. The nucleation temperature depends on the cooling rate, and excess water freezes on further cooling. The clathrate hydrate melts reversibly at 277 K and C(p) increases by 770 J/mol K on melting. The enthalpy of melting is 99.5 kJ/mol and entropy is 358 J/mol K. Molar C(p) of the empty host lattice is less than that of the ice, which is inconsistent with the known lower phonon frequency of H2O in the clathrate lattice. Analysis shows that C(p) of THF and ice are not additive in the clathrate. C(p) of the supercooled THF-H2O solutions is the same as that of water at 247 K, but less at lower temperatures and more at higher temperatures. The difference tends to become constant at 283 K. The results are discussed in terms of the hydrogen-bonding changes between THF and H2O.  相似文献

Radiation-induced solid-state polymerization of cyclohexene sulfide has been investigated. Differential thermal analysis shows that this compound has a phase transition point at ?74°C and behaves as a plastic crystal in the temperature range from ?74 to ?20°C (melting point). By rapid cooling, this plastic crystal was easily supercooled, and below ?166°C a glassy crystal, i.e., a supercooled nonequilibrium state of plastic crystal, was obtained. In-source polymerization proceeded in the plastic crystalline state. Postpolymerization of glassy crystalline monomer irradiated at ?196°C occurred above ?166°C (glass transition point) during subsequent heating.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), soluble in both aqueous and organic solvents, is one of the most intriguing polymers. PEO solution properties have been extensively studied for decades; however, many of the studies have focused on specific properties, such as clustering, of PEO in aqueous solutions, and the behavior of PEO in organic solvents has not been adequately explored. The results presented here demonstrate that PEO crystallizes into a lamellar structure in ethyl alcohol after the mixture is quenched to room temperature from a temperature above the crystal melting point. Above the melting temperature, PEO completely dissolves in ethyl alcohol, and the mixture exhibits regular polymer solution thermodynamic behavior with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase diagram. Remarkably, the UCST phase boundary is significantly below the melting temperature, and this indicates that the system undergoes a crystallization process before the phase separation can occur upon cooling and, therefore, possesses an unusual phase transition. The phase transition from the crystalline state to the miscible solution state is reversible upon heating or cooling and can be induced by the addition of a small amount of water. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was crystallized using temperature modulation in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to thicken the crystals formed on cooling from the melt. A cool-heat modulation method was adopted for the preparation of the samples under a series of conditions. The effect of modulation parameters, such as temperature amplitude and period was monitored with the heating rate that followed. Thickening of the lamellae as a result of the crystallization treatment enabled by the cool-heat method lead to an increase in the peak melting temperature and the final traces of melting. For instance, iPP melting peak shifted by up to 3.5°C with temperature amplitude of 1.0°C while the crystallinity was increased from 0.45 (linearly cooled) to 0.53. Multiple melting endotherms were also observed in some cases, but this was sensitive to the temperature changes experienced on cooling. Even with a slower underlying cooling rate and small temperature amplitudes, some recrystallization and reorganization occurred during the subsequent heating scan. The crystallinity was increased significantly and this was attributed to the crystal perfection that occurred at the crystal growth surface. In addition, temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) has been used to study the melting of iPP for various crystallization treatments. The reversing and non-reversing contribution under the experimental time scale was modified by the relative crystal stability formed during crystallization. Much of the melting of iPP was found to be irreversible. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([bmim]Br) and its chloride ([bmim]Cl) are representative prototypes of ionic liquids. We investigated the melting and freezing behaviors of [bmim]Br and [bmim]Cl by using a homemade differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) with nano-Watt stability and sensitivity. The measurements were carried out at heating and cooling rates slow enough to mimic quasi-static processes. Their thermal behaviors of melting and freezing show characteristic features such as a wide pre-melting range and excessive supercooling and individual behaviors of single crystals even for the same substance. The melting temperatures of [bmim]Br and [bmim]Cl were determined from the broad DSC traces and discussed in relation to the crystal structure. We suggest that the observed characteristics are due to the dynamics of the cooperative change between gauche-trans (GT) and trans-trans (TT) conformations of the butyl group in the [bmim]+ cation.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the thermodynamic melting point of the crystalline nitromethane, the melting mechanism of superheated crystalline nitromethane, and the physical properties of crystalline and glassy nitromethane. The maximum superheating and glass transition temperatures of nitromethane are calculated to be 316 and 160 K, respectively, for heating and cooling rates of 8.9 x 10(9) Ks. Using the hysteresis method [Luo et al., J. Chem. Phys. 120, 11640 (2004)] and by taking the glass transition temperature as the supercooling temperature, we calculate a value of 251.1 K for the thermodynamic melting point, which is in excellent agreement with the two-phase result [Agrawal et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 9617 (2003)] of 255.5 K and measured value of 244.73 K. In the melting process, the nitromethane molecules begin to rotate about their lattice positions in the crystal, followed by translational freedom of the molecules. A nucleation mechanism for the melting is illustrated by the distribution of the local translational order parameter. The critical values of the Lindemann index for the C and N atoms immediately prior to melting (the Lindemann criterion) are found to be around 0.155 at 1 atm. The intramolecular motions and molecular structure of nitromethane undergo no abrupt changes upon melting, indicating that the intramolecular degrees of freedom have little effect on the melting. The thermal expansion coefficient and bulk modulus are predicted to be about two or three times larger in crystalline nitromethane than in glassy nitromethane. The vibrational density of states is almost identical in both phases.  相似文献

The present paper reports the heating rate effect on the phase transitions of a pure liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) with use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Modulation Calorimetry (MC) techniques. The DSC runs were taken at various temperature ramp rates from 20 to 0.5 K/min for heating and cooling scans. Well-defined endothermic/exothermic peaks were found at the melting/crystallization, smectic-A to nematic (SmA-N), and nematic to isotropic (N-I) transitions on heating/cooling scans, respectively. All transitions shift in temperature significantly with different ramp rates. The temperature shift of C(p) peaks between heating and cooling scans indicates the order of the transitions. In addition, all transitions follow an Arrhenius behavior. The activation energy of a transition increases as the total energy involved in the transition decreases. The respective enthalpy and entropy change of each transition provides information on the Gibbs free energy. The significance of the results is discussed in terms of the order of transitions. A comparative analysis of MC and DSC techniques highlights the significance of the two techniques. MC is a practicable tool for observing the phase dynamics whereas DSC is a good tool for studying the rate kinematics of the transitions.  相似文献

Because of the health problems associated with trans fatty acids (TFAs) in hydrogenated oil, the objective of this research was to accelerate crystallization of the trans-free unhydrogenated palm oil (UPO) as a hydrogenated palm oil (HPO) substitute. Crystallization thermograms of UPO blended with icing sugar (1:1.5 mass ratio) from different initial heating temperatures were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), to study its effects on crystallization rate. DSC thermograms of UPO and HPO cooled from two melt states (the complete melting state 80 °C and the incomplete state 40 °C) were also compared. Crystallization rates from temperatures above the melting point (m.p.) were faster than those below the top limit of the m.p. The reason may be that a higher initial heating temperature induced a completely melted state and thus a larger driving force toward the solid phase. Raising the processing temperature to 80 °C, UPO may have a crystallization rate the same as, if not faster than, HPO. This study provides a new way to accelerate the crystallization of the trans-free UPO, making HPO a realistic substitute in the food industry.  相似文献

A photochromic diarylethene crystal of 1,2‐bis(2‐methyl‐6‐nitro‐1‐benzothiophen‐3‐yl)perfluorocyclopentene ( 1 a ) was found to undergo a thermodynamic phase transition at 180 °C to form a needle‐like crystal, designated as 1 a‐γ . The phase transition involves melting of the initial α‐crystal and growth of the γ‐crystal. The phase transition temperature decreased with the presence of the closed‐ring isomer ( 1 b ) in the crystal because of the decrease in the melting temperature. Upon irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light, compound 1 a in the α‐crystal was converted into 1 b to an extent of 20 %. Consequently, the α‐crystal containing 20 % of 1 b underwent the phase transition accompanied by melting of the crystal and growth of the γ‐crystal even at 170 °C. Photomicropatterning by the phase transition upon irradiation with UV light using a photomask, followed by heating at 170 °C, was successfully accomplished with a resolution in the microcrystalline pattern of about 20 μm. The contact angle with water on the γ‐microcrystalline phase on a glass substrate was larger than that on the α‐microcrystalline phase by 20°. This can be ascribed to a difference in the roughness of the surface. Furthermore, the γ‐microcrystal was also found to be formed upon heating an amorphous film of 1 a in poly(methyl methacrylate) for 2 min at 130 °C. The crystallized area exhibited a higher water contact angle than the amorphous area. Upon irradiation of the amorphous film with UV light, such crystallization did not take place because of the impurity effect of 1 b in 1 a . Photomicropatterning by the crystallization in the polymer showed a pattern with a higher resolution of about 4 μm, which was much better than that of the neat crystal. This photopatterning process represents a useful tool for controlling the surface wettability in relevant applications.  相似文献

The presented paper deals with the study of thermophysical properties of cast and complex alloyed nickel based on superalloy Inconel 713LC (IN713LC). In this work, the technique of Differential Thermal Analysis was selected for determination of the phase transformation temperatures and for the study of the effect of varying heating/cooling rate at these temperatures. The samples taken from as-received state of superalloy were analysed at heating and cooling rates of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50?°C?min?1 with the help of the experimental system Setaram SETSYS 18TM. Moreover, the transformation temperatures at zero heating/cooling rate were calculated. The recommended values for IN713LC after correcting to a zero heating rate, are 1,205?°C (T ?á?,solvus), 1,250?°C (solidus) and 1,349?°C (liquidus). Influence of heating/cooling rate on shift of almost all temperatures of phase transformations was established from the DTA curves. Undercooling was observed at the cooling process. The samples before and after DTA analysis were also subjected to the phase analysis by scanning electron microscopy using the microscope JEOL JSM-6490LV equipped with an energy dispersive analyser EDAX (EDS INCA x-act). Documentation of the microstructure was made in the mode of secondary (SEI) and backscattered (BEI) electron imaging. On the basis of DTA analysis and phase analysis it may be stated that development of phase transformations of the alloy IN713LC will probably correspond to the following scheme: melting?????? phase; melting???????+?MC; melting????eutectics ??/?á?; melting???????+?minority phases (e.g. borides); and matrix ???????á?.  相似文献

The influence of the order of polymer melt on the subsequent crystallization and melting has been carefully studied. The experimental data show that the order of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) melt decreases with increases in the fusion temperature. For an iPP sample isothermally crystallized at 130 °C for half an hour, the degree of order of melt is higher when the fusion temperature is lower than about 170.5 °C, hence the lamellae formed in a rapid cooling process are perfect. If the fusion temperature is not higher than 167 °C, some thicker lamellae can exist in the melt. The melting of these unmelted lamellae and those lamellae recrystallized in the cooling process result in double endotherms. On the other hand, when the fusion temperature is higher than 170.5 °C, the order of the iPP melt decreases greatly; thus, the lamellae formed in the following cooling process are imperfect. At a lower heating rate, the recrystallization or reorganization of these imperfect lamellae also leads to double melting endotherms.

For most alkoxycyanobiphenyls (3OCB, 5OCB, 6OCB, 7OCB and 9OCB) it has been observed that slow or delayed cooling gave rise to a lower melting crystalline polymorphic form which then slowly converted into the higher melting stable crystalline structure. Although under slow evaporation from a solvent, polymorphic crystalline structures were observed also for 8OCB, a polymorphism on cooling like that in other nOCBs has not previously been reported. We have now observed that 8OCB also shows polymorphism, which brings it into line with the other homologues. On keeping the material between 35 and 38 °C after it was cooled from above the melting point of the stable crystal form (55 °C), regular platelets grow usually from one point and fill the whole sample. The texture is stable for weeks at room temperature. Upon heating it shows a melting point at 50 °C, i.e. 5 degrees below the stable crystalline melting point. It is interesting that all platelets are non-symmetric and have the same handedness.  相似文献

The morphologies of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) spherulites, when crystallized within the pre-existed poly(oxymethylene)(POM) crystal frameworks, have been investigated.PLLA/POM blend is a melt-miscible crystalline/crystalline blend system.Owing to the lower melting point but much faster crystallization rate than PLLA,POM crystallized first upon cooling from the melt state and then melted first during the subsequent heating process in this blend system.Lamellar assembly of PLLA crystals within the pre-existed POM spherulitic frameworks was directly observed with the polarized light microscopy by selectively melting the POM frameworks. The investigation indicated that PLLA crystals fully replicated the spherulitic morphology and optical birefringence of the POM crystal frameworks, which was independent of Tc.On the other hand,POM could also duplicate the pre-existed PLLA morphologies. The result obtained provides us a possibility to design the lamellar assembly and crystal structures of polymer crystals in miscible crystalline/crystalline polymer blends.  相似文献

The influence of melting temperature and time on the thermal behaviour of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Different melting conditions were investigated at temperature ranging from 200 to 210 °C, and for time from 2 to 20 min. For lower-molecular-weight PLLA, a single exothermic peak could be observed at cooling rate of 2 °C/min, after melted at different conditions. The obtained peak temperature and degrees of crystallinity dramatically increased with an increase of melting temperature or time. During subsequent heating scans, double melting peaks could be observed, which were significantly affected by prior melting conditions. The degradation of this material in the melt and the melt/re-crystallization mechanism might be responsible for the observations above. Apart from double melting, double cold crystallization peaks were observed during heating traces for this material after fast cooling (20 °C/min) from the melt. Prior melting conditions could significantly influence the cold crystallization behaviour. The competition between the crystallization from the nuclei remained after cooling, and that from spontaneous nucleation might be responsible for the appearance of double peaks. Additionally, the influence of melting conditions on the thermal behaviour of PLLA was dependent on the initial molecular weight.  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature (XRDT) were combined in a novel way in order to study conditions of formation and the amount of gas clathrate formed in dispersed systems. The formation and dissociation of trichlorofluoromethane hydrate CCl3F·(H2O)17 in a water-in-oil emulsion were followed by using these combined techniques. An emulsion containing 3 wt.% NaCl was submitted to a cooling and heating cycle between 20 and −50 °C. During cooling, a single exothermic peak at −43 °C, found in DCS thermograms was assigned to the freezing of under-cooled water droplets; however, no noticeable signal related to hydrate crystallisation was detected. Conversely, during subsequent heating, the progressive melting of ice was followed by an endothermic signal indicative of hydrate decomposition. From X-ray diffraction performed on an emulsion sample, it was possible to identify the exact condition of CCl3F·(H2O)17 formation. XRDT diffraction patterns clearly demonstrated that only ice crystallised in the aqueous droplets during cooling and that the hydrate only formed during heating simultaneously with melting of ice. From the solid–liquid phase diagrams of systems H2ONaCl and CCl3FH2ONaCl and from the DSC and XRDT experiments, the composition of the droplets was deduced. The upper limit of the amount of hydrate that could form in the system was calculated.  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics and the melting behavior of PLA and PLA with talc are investigated by dynamic scanning calorimeter and optical microscopy. The polymorphic aspect of PLA was highlighted by analyzing the melting process throughout heating after isothermal crystallization. The melting process of PLA with 5 mass% talc (PLAT5) shows the same thermal transitions as for PLA alone. The thermodynamic melting temperature of PLA and PLAT5 is determined to be 167.7 °C. The effects of the temperature and the cooling rate on the crystallization kinetics of PLA are analyzed. Finally, a simple and efficient protocol is defined to model the isothermal and the non-isothermal crystallization taking into account the polymorphism of PLA. Good agreement is found between the predictions of the proposed model and the experimental results under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions.  相似文献
