In this study, the adsorption of Sn atom at various sites on the MgO(100) surface was characterized using a theoretical approach based on density functional theory calculations. Both regular adsorption centers (O2? and Mg2+) and defects (such as neutral and charged O and Mg vacancies) were considered. Several key parameters for these sites with the adsorbed Sn atom were determined to provide its geometric, energetic, and electronic characterization. The interaction between Sn and the Mg vacancy sites is very strong and is associated with a relatively small distance of the adsorbed Sn atom from the surface and with a large electronic charge transfer from Sn to the surface. A much smaller strength of Sn atom adsorption is observed for the O vacancies and regular sites. Among them, the Fs0 center binds the Sn atom strongest and, in consequence, this atom acquires a significant amount of electronic charge.  相似文献

We use plane wave and embedded cluster ab initio density functional calculations to study adsorption, dissociation and diffusion of the HCl molecule on the MgO(001) surface. The two methods yield comparable results for adsorption of an isolated HCl molecule and complement each other when considering charged species and coverage effects. We find dissociative chemisorption at a coverage smaller than 0.5 monolayer with a Cl(-) ion electrostatically coupled to the OH(-) ion at the surface oxygen site. The adsorption energy of the Cl(-)[dot dot dot](OH)(-) complex is 1.5 eV and the activation energy of Cl(-) diffusion away from OH(-) is 0.6 eV. There is no significant activation energy for rotation of Cl(-) around the adsorption site. At rising coverage, an increase in dipole-dipole repulsion between HCl molecules leads to a lowering of the adsorption energy per HCl and a change of binding towards hydrogen-bridge type as well as a lowering of the activation energy for Cl(-) diffusion. OH(-) formed in the surface due to HCl adsorption has a stretch frequency of 3,083 cm(-1) with Cl(-) associated and 3,648 cm(-1) with Cl(-) removed.  相似文献

Ultra-thin oxide films grown on a metal substrate and of thickness smaller than 1 nm may exhibit unusual properties with respect to thicker films or single crystal oxide surfaces. In a previous study [G. Pacchioni, L. Giordano and M. Baistrocchi, Phys. Rev. Lett., 2005, 94, 226104] we have suggested that a Au atom adsorbed on a MgO/Mo(100) thin film becomes negatively charged by direct electron tunneling from the Mo metal and that this is related to the low MgO/Mo(100) work function. Here we show, based on periodic DFT supercell calculations, that charge transfer can occur also in the opposite direction by adsorption of electropositive K atoms on MgO/Ag(100) films. We predict the occurrence of a charge transfer also for Au on MgO/Ag(100) films despite the fact that here the work function is 1 eV larger than in MgO/Mo(100). The formation of a layer of adsorbed negative (Au delta-/MgO/Ag) or positive (K delta+/MgO/Ag) adsorbates results in an increase or decrease, respectively, of the MgO/Ag(100) work function as predicted by the classical Gurney model for ionic adsorbates on metal surfaces.  相似文献

The nucleation and electronic structure of vapor-deposited Au on hydroxylated MgO(001) surfaces has been investigated under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Hydroxylated MgO(001) surfaces with two different hydroxyl coverages, 0.4 and 1 monolayer, respectively, were prepared by exposure to water (D(2)O) at room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments show significantly higher gold particle densities and smaller particle sizes on the hydroxylated MgO surface as compared to gold deposited on clean MgO(001). Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments were performed to reveal details about the initial nucleation of gold. Gold atoms are found to chemically interact with a specific type of hydroxyl groups on the MgO surface, leading to the formation of oxidized gold particles. The enhanced adhesion of Au particles, which is due to the formation of strong Au-O interfacial bonds, is responsible for the observed higher stability of small Au clusters toward thermal sintering on hydroxylated MgO surfaces. The results are compared to similar studies on Au/TiO(2)(110) model systems and powder samples prepared by the deposition-precipitation route.  相似文献

The initial decomposition of methylamine on Mo(100) surface has been investigated by self-consistent (GGA-PW91) density functional theory combined with periodic slab model. The adsorption energies of possible species and the activation energies for possible elementary reactions involved are obtained in the present work. Our results indicate that the barriers decreased with the order of C-N>N-H>C-H. In addition, metastable adsorption of the abstracted hydrogen atom on the hollow site in the final state is also considered for the N-H and C-H bond breaking. For the C-H bond cleavage, the reaction barrier that the abstracted hydrogen located on the hollow site in the final state is lower than that on the bridge site. However, for the N H bond breaking, the barriers are alike for the abstracted hydrogen on both hollow and bridge sites in the final state.  相似文献

Periodic density functional calculations have been carried out to investigate both the thiol adsorption on Au(111) surface and the reaction mechanism for the formation of the self-assembled monolayers, taking propanethiol as a representative example. The effect of coverage and surface defects (adatoms and vacancies) has been analyzed. It is found that the most stable physisorption (undissociated) site is an adatom site, whereas the chemisorption site for the thiol is a vacancy site or protrusion consisting of a pair of adatoms, followed by one adatom site. The results point out that the thiolate self-assembled monolayer adsorption process occurs preferentially on step edges.  相似文献

Single d-metal atoms on oxygen defects F(s) and F(s+) of the MgO(001) surface were studied theoretically. We employed an accurate density functional method combined with cluster models, embedded in an elastic polarizable environment, and we applied two gradient-corrected exchange-correlation functionals. In this way, we quantified how 17 metal atoms from groups 6-11 of the periodic table (Cu, Ag, Au; Ni, Pd, Pt; Co, Rh, Ir; Fe, Ru, Os; Mn, Re; and Cr, Mo, W) interact with terrace sites of MgO. We found bonding with F(s) and F(s+) defects to be in general stronger than that with O2- sites, except for Mn-, Re-, and Fe/F(s) complexes. In M/F(s) systems, electron density is accumulated on the metal center in a notable fashion. The binding energy on both kinds of O defects increases from 3d- to 4d- to 5d-atoms of a given group, at variance with the binding energy trend established earlier for the M/O2- complexes, 4d < 3d < 5d. Regarding the evolution of the binding energy along a period, group 7 atoms are slightly destabilized compared to their group 6 congeners in both the F(s) and F(s+) complexes; for later transition elements, the binding energy increases gradually up to group 10 and finally decreases again in group 11, most strongly on the F(s) site. This trend is governed by the negative charge on the adsorbed atoms. We discuss implications for an experimental detection of metal atoms on oxide supports based on computed core-level energies.  相似文献

The chemisorptive bonding of methanethiolate (CH(3)S) on the Au(111) surface has been investigated at a single-molecule level using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and density functional theory (DFT). The CH(3)S species were produced by STM-tip-induced dissociation of methanethiol (CH(3)SH) or dimethyl disulfide (CH(3)SSCH(3)) at 5 K. The adsorption site of an isolated CH(3)S species was assigned by comparing the experimental and calculated STM images. We conclude that the S-headgroup of chemisorbed CH(3)S adsorbs on the 2-fold coordinated bridge site between two Au atoms, consistent with theoretical predictions for CH(3)S on the nondefective Au(111) surface. Our assignment is also supported by the freezing of the tip-induced rotational dynamics of a single CH(3)SH molecule upon conversion to CH(3)S via deprotonation.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to determine the interaction energy between a CO probe molecule and all atoms from the first three rows of the periodic table coadsorbed on Rh(100), Pd(100) and Ir(100) metal surfaces. Varying the coverage of CO or the coadsorbed atom proved to have a profound effect on the strength of the interaction energy. The general trend, however, is the same in all cases: the interaction energy becomes more repulsive when moving towards the right along a row of elements, and reaches a maximum somewhere in the middle of a row of elements. The absolute value of the interaction energy between an atom-CO pair ranges from about -0.40 eV (39 kJ mol(-1)) attraction to +0.70 eV (68 kJ mol(-1)) repulsion, depending on the coadsorbate, the metal and the coverage. The general trend in interaction energies seems to be a common characteristic for several transition metals.  相似文献

The adsorption of multivalent thiols on gold (111) surface was investigated using density functional theory applying the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functional. Through the comparison of differences in energetics, structure and charge density distribution of a set of monodentate and polydentate thiols, we have described in detail the factors affecting the adsorption energy and the role played by the multivalence, which causes a decreasing of adsorption energy because of both electronic and steric hindrance effects. Finally, the comparison between the adsorption of 1,2‐ and 1,3‐disulfides revealed how the chain length may affect the cleavage of the S? S bond when they adsorb on Au(111) surface. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We performed a theoretical study of the adsorption of oxygen on a cluster model of the Cu(100) surface and also the surface coadsorbed with lithium and potassium atoms. The study showed that alkali coadsorption facilitates in a significant way the process of molecular adsorption, whereas the adsorption of atomic oxygen is only slightly modified. The alkali atoms on the copper surface produce an increase in the charge transfer toward the oxygen molecule, favoring the oxygen dissociation. The effect is greater for the potassium coadsorption. In addition, we found that the potassium coadsorption favored the dissociation and recombination processes by about 60 and 15%, respectively. In turn, the lithium coadsorption favored only the recombination process by about 50%. These results could be an important aspect for catalytic processes. From the Proceedings of the 28th Congreso de Quimicos Teóricos de Expression Latina (QUITEL 2002)  相似文献

The adsorption of small amounts of alkali metal atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) on the surface of MgO powders and thin films has been studied by means of EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. From a comparison of the measured and computed g values and hyperfine coupling constants (hfccs), a tentative assignment of the preferred adsorption sites is proposed. All atoms bind preferentially to surface oxide anions, but the location of these anions differs as a function of the deposition temperature and alkali metal. Lithium forms relatively strong bonds with MgO and can be stabilized at low temperatures on terrace sites. Potassium interacts very weakly with MgO and is stabilized only at specific sites, such as at reverse corners where it can interact simultaneously with three surface oxygen atoms (rubidium and cesium presumably behave in the same way). Sodium forms bonds of intermediate strength and could, in principle, populate more than a single site when deposited at room temperature. In all cases, large deviations of the hfccs from the gas-phase values are observed. These reductions in the hfccs are due to polarization effects and are not connected to ionization of the alkali metal, which would lead to the formation of an adsorbed cation and a trapped electron. In this respect, hydrogen atoms behave completely differently. Under similar conditions, they form (H(+))(e(-)) pairs. The reasons for this different behavior are discussed.  相似文献

The adsorption of Ca on the MgO(100) surface at 300 K has been studied using microcalorimetry, in combination with LEED, AES, ISS, work function, sticking probability measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MgO(100) thin films (approximately 4 nm thick) were grown epitaxially on a 1 microm thick Mo(100) single-crystal. The sticking probability of Ca on MgO(100) at 300 K is unity. On the basis of AES and ISS measurements, it was determined that Ca grows mainly as 3D particles on the MgO(100) surface with a density of approximately 1 x 10(12) islands/cm2. Ca adsorbs initially at defect sites with a very high heat of adsorption (approximately 410 kJ/mol). DFT calculations attribute this high initial heat to Ca binding to kink sites (376 kJ/mol), step sites (205 kJ/mol), and lower concentrations of stronger binding sites. The heat of adsorption decreases rapidly with coverage, reaching a minimum of 162 kJ/mol at approximately 0.3 ML, where Ca is mainly adding to small 3D Ca clusters. Afterward, it increases to the value of bulk Ca heat of sublimation (178 kJ/mol) at approximately 1.2 ML, attributed to the increase in stability with increasing Ca particle size. A 1.0 eV decrease of the work function with Ca coverage from 0 to 0.3 ML indicates that Ca adsorbed at defects is cationic, in agreement with calculations showing that Ca donates electron density to the MgO. Light ion sputtering of the MgO(100) surface generates point defects, but these do not change the heat of adsorption versus coverage, implying that they do not nucleate Ca particles. Oxygen vacancies are a likely candidate; DFT calculations show that F and F+ center vacancies bind Ca more weakly than terrace sites. More extensive sputtering creates extended defects (such as steps and kinks) that adsorb Ca with heats of adsorption up to approximately 400 kJ/mol, similar to that at the intrinsic defect sites.  相似文献

In this work we have studied, employing ab initio periodic calculations, the interaction between the non-stoichiometric Ni(3)O(4) monolayer (a rhombic distribution of vacancies hereafter referred to as RH-Ni(3)O(4)) supported on the Pd(100) surface and several transition metal atoms (Ni, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ag, Au). The interaction produces a regular array of metal centers uniformly distributed in size and shape. According to the size of the atom and the ionization potential, the nature of the interaction ranges from an essentially electrostatic one to a polar-covalent one. The chemical reactivity versus the CO molecule of the overlayer resulting from the saturation with Au atoms of the Ni vacancies has been investigated.  相似文献

Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a useful material because of its catalytical properties. Moreover, surface defects have been found to play a crucial role in determining the activity and selectivity of catalytic surfaces. We present the results of a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of the MgO (001) surface with three different topological defects. Our calculations are based on density functional theory (DFT) and the pseudopotential method. Slab geometry and periodic boundary conditions have been included with occupied orbitals expanded in plane waves. We compare the obtained results of the (001) MgO clean surface with those containing topological defects. The density of states DOS is analyzed in each case, as well as the chemical nature of the atoms belonging to the defects. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2005  相似文献

Density functional theory is used to investigate the effects of coverage and solvent on the adsorption of H2S on the Cu(100) surface. In this work, the adsorption energies, structural parameters and Mulliken charges of the adsorbed H2S are calculated. The results show that when the coverage of H2S is high (1 ML), H2S molecule cannot adsorb on the Cu(100) surface spontaneously, and the decomposition of H2S preferentially occurs at the bridge site. When the coverage decreases to 1/4 ML coverage, H2S molecule does not exhibit the decomposition, but bonds to the top Cu atom with the tilted adsorption. Furthermore, when the coverage is 1/9, 1/16 and 1/25 ML, H2S adsorption remains stable. In addition, the stability of H2S adsorption on the Cu(100) surface improves rapidly when the solvent dielectric constant (ε) increases from 1 to 12.3 corresponding to the vacuum and pyridine, respectively. For the higher ε (≥24.3), the effect of the solvent on the H2S adsorption was greatly reduced. In this work, both coverage and solvent are shown to have an important effect on the H2S adsorption on the Cu(100) surface, which might be useful to improve the future similar simulations.
