We study the zero-temperature spin fluctuations of a two-dimensional itinerant-electron system with an incommensurate magnetic ground state described by a single-band Hubbard Hamiltonian. We introduce the (broken-symmetry) magnetic phase at the mean-field (Hartree-Fock) level through a spiral spin configuration with characteristic wave vector Q different in general from the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q AF, and consider spin fluctuations over and above it within the electronic random-phase (RPA) approximation. We obtain a closed system of equations for the generalized wave vector and frequency dependent susceptibilities, which are equivalent to the ones reported recently by Brenig. We obtain, in addition, analytic results for the spin-wave dispersion relation in the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard Hamiltonian and find that at finite doping the spin-wave dispersion relation has a hybrid form between that associated with the (localized) Heisenberg model and that associated with the (long-range) RKKY exchange interaction. We also find an instability of the spin-wave spectrum in a finite region about the center of the Brillouin zone, which signals a physical instability toward a different spin- or, possibly, charge-ordered phase, as, for example, the stripe structures observed in the high-T c materials. We expect, however, on physical grounds that for wave vectors external to this region the spin-wave spectrum that we have determined should survive consideration of more sophisticated mean-field solutions. We study the ground state properties of a superconductor-ferromagnet-insulator trilayer on the basis of a Hubbard Model featuring exchange splitting in the ferromagnet and electron-electron attraction in the superconductor. We solve the spin-polarized Hartree-Fock-Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) fully self-consistently with respect to the order parameter and the current. For certain values of the exchange splitting we find that a spontaneous spin polarized current is generated in the ground state and is intimately related to Andreev bound states at the Fermi level. Moreover, the polarization of the current strongly depends on the band filling. For w-legged antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders, a long-range spin pairing order can be identified which enables the separation of the space spanned by finite-range (covalent) valence-bond configurations into w +1 subspaces. Since every subspace has an equivalent counter subspace connected by translational symmetry, twofold degeneracy, breaking translational symmetry is found except for the subspace where the ground state of w = even belongs to. In terms of energy ordering, (non)degeneracy and the discontinuities introduced in the long-range spin pairing order by topological spin defects, the differences between even and odd ladders are explained in a general and systematic way. The equation of motion of twists on classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains are derived. It is shown that twists interact via position- and velocity-dependent long-range two-body forces. A quiescent regime is identified wherein the system conserves momentum. With increasing kinetic energy the system exits this regime and momentum conservation is violated due to walls annihilation. A bitwist system is shown to be integrable and its exact solution is analysed. Many-twist systems are discussed and novel periodic twist lattice solutions are found on closed chains. The stability of these solutions is discussed. Received 12 June 2002 Published online 2 October 2002 RID="a" ID="a"e-mail: rbbll@phy.cam.ac.uk

A possible quantum spin-liquid state in the second-layer solid 3He adsorbed on graphite is discussed based on recent specific-heat measurements. This system is known as an ideal 2D nuclear magnet with spin . Because of competition between the multiple-spin exchanges and the triangular lattice structure, the ground state of the low-density antiferromagnetic solid can be highly frustrated without any long-range order.

We examine the role of spin twists in the formation of domain walls, often called stripes, by focusing on the spin textures found in the cluster spin glass phases of and . To this end, we derive improved analytic expressions for the spin distortions produced by a frustrating bond, both near the core region of the bond and in the far field, and then derive an improved expression for interaction energies between such bonds. We critique our analytical theory by comparison to numerical solutions of this problem and find excellent agreement. By looking at collections of small numbers of such bonds localized in some region of a lattice, we demonstrate the stability of small “clusters” of spins, each cluster having its own orientation of its antiferromagnetic order parameter. Then, we display a domain wall corresponding to spin twists between clusters of locally ordered spins showing how spin twists can serve as a mechanism for stripe formation. Since the charges are localized in this model, we emphasize that these domain walls are produced in a situation for which no kinetic energy is present in the problem. We consider a ferromagnetic Ising chain evolving under Kawasaki dynamics at zero temperature. We investigate the statistics of the blocking time, as well as various characteristics of the metastable configurations reached by the system, including the statistics of the final energy, the spin correlations, and the distribution of domain sizes. Results of extensive numerical simulations are compared with analytical predictions made for the a priori ensemble of all blocked configurations with equal weights. Qualitative differences are found, e.g. in the domain sizes, which are found to be neither statistically independent nor exponentially distributed. The behavior of charge and spin persistent currents in an integrable lattice ring of strongly correlated electrons with a magnetic impurity is exactly studied. Our results manifest that the oscillations of charge and spin persistent currents are similar to the ones, earlier obtained for integrable continuum models with a magnetic impurity. The difference is due to two (instead of one) Fermi velocities of low-lying excitations. The form of oscillations in the ground state is “saw-tooth”-like, generic for any multi-particle coherent one-dimensional models. The integrable magnetic impurity introduces net charge and spin chiralities in the generic integrable lattice system, which determine the initial phase shifts of charge and spin persistent currents. We show that the magnitude of the charge persistent current in the generic Kondo situation does not depend on the parameters of the magnetic impurity, unlike the (magneto)resistivity of transport currents. The quantum phase transition in the ground state of the extended spin S = 1/2 XY model has been studied in detail. Using the exact solution of the model the low temperature thermodynamics, as well as the ground state phase diagram of the model in the presence of applied uniform and/or staggered magnetic field are discussed. The low-temperature phase of discontinuous mean-field spin glasses is generally described by a one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) ansatz. The Gardner transition, i.e. a very-low-temperature phase transition to a full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) phase, is often regarded as an inessential, and somehow exotic phenomenon. In this paper we show that the metastable states which are relevant for the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of such systems are always in a FRSB phase. The only exceptions are (to the best of our knowledge) the p-spin spherical model and the random energy model (REM). We also discuss the consequences of our results for aging dynamics and for local search algorithms in hard combinatorial problems. The properties of the spin system in the FCC lattice described by the Heisenberg model (s=1/2) with antiferromagnetic interactions between the nearest neighbors were studied. It was shown within the framework of spin-wave theory that long-range antiferromagnetic order was absent because of frustration of exchange coupling and transverse quantum spin fluctuations. The system was in the quantum spin liquid state. A method for describing it within linear second-order theory with self-consistently calculated parameters was suggested. It was proved that the ground spin liquid state was singlet. The thermodynamic properties of the spin liquid in the whole temperature range and the character of spatial spin correlations, which had alternating signs and a finite correlation length, were determined. The theory was constructed based on the method of two-time Green temperature functions.

Gadolinium gallium garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) has an extraordinary low-temperature phase diagram. Although the Curie–Weiss temperature of GGG is −2 K, GGG shows no long-range order down to T0.4 K. At low temperatures GGG has a spin glass phase at low fields (0.1 T), a field-induced long-range ordered antiferromagnetic state at fields of between 0.7 and 1.3 T, and, at intermediate fields, an apparent spin-liquid state without long-range order. We have characterized the intermediate field (IF) state through heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and magnetocaloric measurements. Our results show a sharp high-field phase boundary of the thermal irreversibility of the spin glass phase of GGG implying that the intermediate field phase is distinct from the spin glass. The lower field boundary of the AFM phase is shown to have distinct minimum at T0.2 K, in analogy to the minimum in the melting curve of 4He. The existence of such a minimum is confirmed by measurements of the latent heat of the transition below that temperature.

A numerical method is described for evaluating transverse spin correlations in the random phase approximation. Quantum spin-fluctuation corrections to sublattice magnetization are evaluated for the antiferromagnetic ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model in two and three dimensions in the whole U/t range. Extension to the case of defects in the AF is also discussed for spin vacancies and low-U impurities. In the limit, the vacancy-induced enhancement in the spin fluctuation correction is obtained for the spin-vacancy problem in two dimensions, for vacancy concentration up to the percolation threshold. For low-U impurities, the overall spin fluctuation correction is found to be strongly suppressed, although surprisingly spin fluctuations are locally enhanced at the low-U sites. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the self-consistent numerical method, we obtain a high spin ground state with localized spin density describing spin localization and the soliton describing the distortion of the lattice configurations along the main chain. Different electron-phonon interactions result in different configurations of solitons. When the electron-phonon coupling along the main chain is larger than a critical value , a transition from a single soliton-like distortion to a pair of soliton-like distortions along the main chain takes place. Such critical value depends mainly on the intersite Coulomb interactions. The spin density wave along the main chain is always localized around the center of soliton-like distortions.

An extended tunneling Hamiltonian method is proposed to study the temperature-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in doped magnetic tunnel junctions. It is found that for nonmagnetic dopants (Si), impurity-assisted tunneling is mainly elastic, giving rise to a weak spin polarization, thereby reduces the overall TMR, while for magnetic ions (Ni), the collective excitation of local spins in δ-doped magnetic layer contributes to the severe drop of TMR and the behavior of the variation of TMR with temperature different from that for Si-doping. The theoretical results can reproduce the main characteristic features of experiments. We study the localization properties of electrons in a two-dimensional model with on-site energies exhibiting long-range correlated disorder. The localization length and conductance of the system are calculated by using the finite size scaling method combined with transfer matrix technique. In the presence of long-range correlations, we find that there is a continuous line of fixed points indicating that the system undergoes a disorder driven Kosterlitz-Thouless-type metal-insulator transition. In degenerate quantum plasma the energy behavior of electrostatic modes propagating perpendicular to the external magnetic field is studied by employing the separated spin evolution quantum hydrodynamic (SSE-QHD) model. This model reveals that spin electron cyclotron wave (SECW) appears additionally with the upper hybrid wave (UHW). In case of SECW, the curves for the energy flow speed at different levels of spin polarization effect flip over at a particular value of wave number. The spin polarization effect enhances the energy flow speed before this value of wave number and then suppresses it afterward. The energy flow speed is enhanced by spin polarization effect in the entire range of wave number for the propagation of UHW. The Bohm potential effect drastically increases the energy flow speed at high wave number domain in both the waves. This study may find its applications to understand the energy behavior inspin polarized solid state plasmas
