This paper considers a simple discrete-time queueing model with two types (classes) of customers (types 1 and 2) each having their own dedicated server (servers A and B resp.). New customers enter the system according to a general independent arrival process, i.e., the total numbers of arrivals during consecutive time slots are i.i.d. random variables with arbitrary distribution. Service times are deterministically equal to 1 slot each. The system uses a “global FCFS” service discipline, i.e., all arriving customers are accommodated in one single FCFS queue, regardless of their types. As a consequence of the “global FCFS” rule, customers of one type may be blocked by customers of the other type, in that they may be unable to reach their dedicated server even at times when this server is idle, i.e., the system is basically non-workconserving. One major aim of the paper is to estimate the negative impact of this phenomenon on the queueing performance of the system, in terms of the achievable throughput, the system occupancy, the idle probability of each server and the delay. As it is clear that customers of different types hinder each other more as they tend to arrive in the system more clustered according to class, the degree of “class clustering” in the arrival process is explicitly modeled in the paper and its very direct impact on the performance measures is revealed. The motivation of our work are systems where this kind of blocking is encountered, such as input-queueing network switches or road splits.  相似文献

We analyze a discrete-time queueing model where two types of customers, each having their own dedicated server, are accommodated in one single FCFS queue. Service times are deterministically equal to \(s \ge 1\) time slots each. New customers enter the system according to a general independent arrival process, but the types of consecutive customers may be nonindependent. As a result, arriving customers may (or may not) have the tendency to cluster according to their types, which may lead to more (or less) blocking of one type by the opposite type. The paper reveals the impact of this blocking phenomenon on the achievable throughput, the (average) system content, the (average) customer delay and the (average) unfinished work. The paper extends the results of earlier work where either the service times were assumed to be constant and equal to 1 slot each, or the customers all belonged to the same class. Our results show that, in case of Poisson arrivals, for given traffic intensity, the system-content distribution is insensitive to the length (s) of the service times, but the (mean) delay and the (mean) unfinished work in the system are not. In case of bursty arrivals, we find that all the performance measures are affected by the length (s) of the service times, for given traffic intensity.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time queueing system in which the arriving customers decide with a certain probability to be served under a LCFS-PR discipline and with complementary probability to join the queue. The arrivals are assumed to be geometrical and the service times are arbitrarily distributed. The service times of the expelled customers are independent of their previous ones. We carry out an extensive analysis of the system developing recursive formulae and generating functions for the steady-state distribution of the number of customers in the system and obtaining also recursive formulae and generating functions for the stationary distribution of the busy period and sojourn time as well as some performance measures.  相似文献

Analysis of a discrete-time queueing system with time-limited service   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We analyze a discrete-time, single-server queueing system in which the length of each service period is limited. The server takes a vacation when the limit expires or the queue empties, whichever occurs first. In the former case, the preempted service is resumed after the vacation without loss or creation of any work. This system models the transmission of message frames from a station on timed-token local-area networks (for example, FDDI and IEEE 802.4 token bus). We study the process of the unfinished work and the joint process of the queue size and the remaining service time. By using the technique of discrete Fourier transforms to determine some unknown functions in the governing equations, we numerically obtain exact mean waiting times.A part of the work of H.

In this paper, we use matrix–analytic methods to construct a novel queueing model called the dual queue. The dual queue has the additional feature of a priority scheme to assist in congestion control. Detailed structure of the infinitesimal generator matrix is derived and used in the solution process. Using a computational algorithm, which utilises a combination of iterative and elementary matrix techniques, the steady state solution is obtained for all queues with a finite buffer. Finally, we present numerical examples to illustrate the algorithm.  相似文献

This paper investigates an optimal sequencing and dynamic pricing problem for a two-class queueing system. Using a Markov Decision Process based model, we obtain structural characterizations of optimal policies. In particular, it is shown that the optimal pricing policy depends on the entire queue length vector but some monotonicity results prevail as the composition of this vector changes. A numerical study finds that static pricing policies may have significant suboptimality but simple dynamic pricing policies perform well in most situations.  相似文献

This paper presents a one-server queueing model with retrials in discrete-time. The number of primary jobs arriving in a time slot follows a general probability distribution and the different numbers of primary arrivals in consecutive time slots are mutually independent. Each job requires from the server a generally distributed number of slots for its service, and the service times of the different jobs are independent. Jobs arriving in a slot can start their service only at the beginning of the next slot. When upon arrival jobs find the server busy all incoming jobs are sent into orbit. When upon arrival in a slot jobs find the server idle, then one of the incoming jobs (randomly chosen) in that slot starts its service at the beginning of the next slot, whereas the other incoming jobs in that slot, if any, are sent into orbit. During each slot jobs in the orbit try to re-enter the system individually, independent of each other, with a given retrial probability.  相似文献

We study a single-server queue in which the service consists of two independent stages. The first stage is generic and can be performed even in the absence of customers, whereas the second requires the customer to be present. When the system is empty of customers, the server produces an inventory of first-stage (‘preliminary’) services (denoted PSs), which is used to reduce customers’ overall sojourn times. We formulate and analyze the queueing-inventory system and derive its steady-state probabilities by using the matrix geometric method, which is based on calculating the so called rate matrix R. It is shown that the system's stability is not affected by the production rate of PSs, and that there are cases in which utilizing the server's idle time to produce PSs actually increases the fraction of time during which the server is dormant. A significant contribution is the derivation of an explicit expression of R, whose entries are written in terms of Catalan numbers. This type of result is rare in the literature and enables large-scale problems to be solved with low computational effort. Furthermore, by utilizing Laplace–Stieltjes transform and its inverse, we obtain the distribution function of customers’ sojourn time. Finally, based on the probabilistic study, we carry out an economic analysis using a practical example from the fast food industry.  相似文献

We consider the well-known First Come First Serve (FCFS) scheduling policy under bursty arrivals. This policy is commonly used in scheduling communication networks and manufacturing systems. Recently it has been shown that the FCFS policy can be unstable for some nonacyclic network topologies. We identify some network topologies under which FCFS is stable for all arrival and service rate vectors within the system's capacity. This is done by determining a sharp bound on the burstiness of traffic exiting from a tandem section of the system, in terms of the burstiness of the incoming traffic. This burstiness bound further allows us to provide a bound on the maximum number of parts in the system, and the maximum delay. It also enables us to analyze the performance of some systems controlled by the use of traffic smoothing regulators. The maximum delay can remain bounded even in the heavy traffic limit, when all stations are 100% utilized.  相似文献

This paper concerns discrete-time queueing systems operating under a first-come-first-served queueing discipline, with deterministic service times of one slot and subject to independent server interruptions. For such systems, we derive a relationship between the probability generating functions of the system content during an arbitrary slot and of the system delay of an arbitrary customer. This relationship is valid regardless of the nature of the arrival process. From this relationship we derive a relationship between the first- and second-order moments of the distributions involved. It is shown that the relationship also applies to subsystems of the queueing system being discussed, and to the waiting time and queue content of a multi-server queueing system with geometric service times and uninterrupted servers.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a discrete-time queueing system with one server and two classes of customers. Customers enter the system according to a general independent arrival process. The classes of consecutive customers, however, are correlated in a Markovian way. The system uses a “global FCFS” service discipline, i.e., all arriving customers are accommodated in one single FCFS queue, regardless of their classes. The service-time distribution of the customers is general but class-dependent, and therefore, the exact order in which the customers of both classes succeed each other in the arrival stream is important, which is reflected by the complexity of the system content and waiting time analysis presented in this paper. In particular, a detailed waiting time analysis of this kind of multi-class system has not yet been published, and is considered to be one of the main novelties by the authors. In addition to that, a major aim of the paper is to estimate the impact of interclass correlation in the arrival stream on the total number of customers in the system, and the customer delay. The results reveal that the system can exhibit two different classes of stochastic equilibrium: a “strong” equilibrium where both customer classes give rise to stable behavior individually, and a “compensated” equilibrium where one customer type creates overload.  相似文献

This paper studies the heavy-traffic behavior of a closed system consisting of two service stations. The first station is an infinite server and the second is a single server whose service rate depends on the size of the queue at the station. We consider the regime when both the number of customers, n, and the service rate at the single-server station go to infinity while the service rate at the infinite-server station is held fixed. We show that, as n→∞, the process of the number of customers at the infinite-server station normalized by n converges in probability to a deterministic function satisfying a Volterra integral equation. The deviations of the normalized queue from its deterministic limit multiplied by √n converge in distribution to the solution of a stochastic Volterra equation. The proof uses a new approach to studying infinite-server queues in heavy traffic whose main novelty is to express the number of customers at the infinite server as a time-space integral with respect to a time-changed sequential empirical process. This gives a new insight into the structure of the limit processes and makes the end results easy to interpret. Also the approach allows us to give a version of the classical heavy-traffic limit theorem for the G/GI/∞ queue which, in particular, reconciles the limits obtained earlier by Iglehart and Borovkov. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper derives a conservation law for mean waiting times in a single-server multi-class service queueing system (M X/G/1 type queue) with setup times which may be dependent on multiple customer classes and its arrival batch size by using the work decomposition property in the queueing system with vacations.  相似文献
