We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a Hill operator (i.e., a one-dimensional periodic Schrö dinger operator) H = ?d 2 /dx 2 + V to be a spectral operator of scalar type. The conditions show the remarkable fact that the property of a Hill operator being a spectral operator is independent of smoothness (or even analyticity) properties of the potential V. In the course of our analysis, we also establish a functional model for periodic Schrödinger operators that are spectral operators of scalar type and develop the corresponding eigenfunction expansion. The problem of deciding which Hill operators are spectral operators of scalar type appears to have been open for about 40 years.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a perturbation approach to investigate spectral problems for singular ordinary differential operators with indefinite weight functions. We prove a general perturbation result on the local spectral properties of selfadjoint operators in Krein spaces which differ only by finitely many dimensions from the orthogonal sum of a fundamentally reducible operator and an operator with finitely many negative squares. This result is applied to singular indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators and higher order singular ordinary differential operators with indefinite weight functions.  相似文献

The various essential spectra of a linear operator have been surveyed byB. Gramsch andD. Lay [4]. In this paper we characterize the essential spectra and the related quantities nullity, defect, ascent and descent of bounded spectral operators. It is shown that a number of these spectra coincide in the case of a spectral or a scalar type operator. Some results known for normal operators in Hilbert space are extended to spectral operators in Banach space.  相似文献

On a class of quasi-Fredholm operators   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study a class of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach spaceX called B-Fredholm operators. Among other things we characterize a B-Fredholm operator as the direct sum of a nilpotent operator and a Fredholm operator and we prove a spectral mapping theorem for B-Fredholm operators.IMemory of my father, Sidi-Bouhouria 1914-0991.  相似文献

Triangular operators are an essential tool in the study of nonselfadjoint operators that appear in different fields with a wide range of applications. Although the development of a quaternionic counterpart for this theory started at the beginning of this century, the lack of a proper spectral theory combined with problems caused by the underlying noncommutative structure prevented its real development for a long time. In this paper, we give criteria for a quaternionic linear operator to have a triangular representation, namely, under which conditions such operators can be represented as a sum of a diagonal operator with a Volterra operator. To this effect, we investigate quaternionic Volterra operators based on the quaternionic spectral theory arising from the S-spectrum. This allow us to obtain conditions when a non-selfadjoint operator admits a triangular representation.  相似文献

The connection between the classical moment problem and the spectral theory of second order difference operators (or Jacobi matrices) is a thoroughly studied topic. Here we examine a similar connection in the case of the second order operator replaced by an operator generated by an infinite band matrix with operator elements. For such operators, we obtain an analog of the Stone theorem and consider the inverse spectral problem which amounts to restoring the operator from the moment sequence of its Weyl matrix. We establish the solvability criterion for such problems, find the conditions ensuring that the elements of the moment sequence admit an integral representation with respect to an operator valued measure and discuss an algorithm for the recovery of the operator. We also indicate a connection between the inverse problem method and the Hermite-Padé approximations.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of spectralizable operators. A closed operator A in a Hilbert space is called spectralizable if there exists a non-constant polynomial p such that the operator p(A) is a scalar spectral operator in the sense of Dunford. We show that such operators belongs to the class of generalized spectral operators and give some examples where spectralizable operators occur naturally. Nonself-adjoint, non-dissipative perturbations of possibly unbounded self-adjoint operators with real purely singular spectrum are considered under an additional assumption that the characteristic function of the operator possesses a scalar multiple. Using a functional model of a nonself-adjoint operator (a generalization of a Sz.-Nagy–Foiaş model for dissipative operators) as a principle tool, spectral properties of such operators are investigated. A class of operators with almost Hermitian spectrum (the latter being a part of the real singular spectrum) is characterized in terms of existence of the so-called weak outer annihilator which generalizes the classical Cayley identity to the case of nonself-adjoint operators in Hilbert space. A similar result is proved in the self-adjoint case, characterizing the condition of absence of the absolutely continuous spectral subspace in terms of the existence of weak outer annihilation. An application to the rank-one nonself-adjoint Friedrichs model is given.  相似文献

We introduce a number of notions related to the Lyapunov transformation of linear differential operators with unbounded operator coefficients generated by a family of evolution operators. We prove statements about similar operators related to the Lyapunov transformation and describe their spectral properties. One of the main results of the paper is a similarity theorem for a perturbed differential operator with constant operator coefficient, an operator which is the generator of a bounded group of operators. For the perturbation, we consider the operator ofmultiplication by a summable operator function. The almost periodicity (at infinity) of the solutions of the corresponding homogeneous differential equation is established.  相似文献

Sign type spectra are an important tool in the investigation of spectral properties of selfadjoint operators in Krein spaces. It is our aim to show that also sign type spectra for normal operators in Krein spaces provide insight in the spectral nature of the operator: If the real part and the imaginary part of a normal operator in a Krein space have real spectra only and if the growth of the resolvent of the imaginary part (close to the real axis) is of finite order, then the normal operator possesses a local spectral function defined for Borel subsets of the spectrum which belong to positive (negative) type spectrum. Moreover, the restriction of the normal operator to the spectral subspace corresponding to such a Borel subset is a normal operator in some Hilbert space. In particular, if the spectrum consists entirely out of positive and negative type spectrum, then the operator is similar to a normal operator in some Hilbert space. We use this result to show the existence of operator roots of a class of quadratic operator polynomials with normal coefficients.  相似文献

We study the integrated density of states of random Anderson-type additive and multiplicative perturbations of deterministic background operators for which the single-site potential does not have a fixed sign. Our main result states that, under a suitable assumption on the regularity of the random variables, the integrated density of states of such random operators is locally Hölder continuous at energies below the bottom of the essential spectrum of the background operator for any nonzero disorder, and at energies in the unperturbed spectral gaps, provided the randomness is sufficiently small. The result is based on a proof of a Wegner estimate with the correct volume dependence. The proof relies upon the Lp-theory of the spectral shift function for p?1 (Comm. Math. Phys.218 (2001), 113-130), and the vector field methods of Klopp (Comm. Math. Phys.167 (1995), 553-569). We discuss the application of this result to Schrödinger operators with random magnetic fields and to band-edge localization.  相似文献

We develop relative oscillation theory for one-dimensional Dirac operators which, rather than measuring the spectrum of one single operator, measures the difference between the spectra of two different operators. This is done by replacing zeros of solutions of one operator by weighted zeros of Wronskians of solutions of two different operators. In particular, we show that a Sturm-type comparison theorem still holds in this situation and demonstrate how this can be used to investigate the number of eigenvalues in essential spectral gaps. Furthermore, the connection with Krein's spectral shift function is established. As an application we extend a result by K.M. Schmidt on the finiteness/infiniteness of the number of eigenvalues in essential spectral gaps of perturbed periodic Dirac operators.  相似文献

We give necessary and sufficient conditions to prove a spectral theorem and a functional calculus for certain nonselfadjoint operators, H. Our method is non-perturbative: the conditions are given in terms of the resolvent (z-H)–1. We give an example of an operator satisfying these conditions. This operator is not a spectral operator of scalar type. Its spectral projections are unbounded operators defined on a common dense domainD.This research was supported in part by Department of Energy Grant No. DE-AS05-80ER10711 and National Science Foundation Grant No. DMA-8312451.  相似文献

The main results of the present paper are related to the use of finite-difference operators for estimating the norms of inverses of differential operators with unbounded operator coefficients. We obtain a new proof of the Gearhart-Prüss spectral mapping theorem for operator semigroups in a Hilbert space and estimate the exponential dichotomy exponents of an operator semigroup.  相似文献

In this paper we study some properties of a totally *-paranormal operator (defined below) on Hilbert space. In particular, we characterize a totally *-paranormal operator. Also we show that Weyl’s theorem and the spectral mapping theorem hold for totally *-paranormal operators through the local spectral theory. Finally, we show that every totally *-paranormal operator satisfies an analogue of the single valued extension property for W 2(D, H) and some of totally *-paranormal operators have scalar extensions.  相似文献

A sufficient condition is given under which the sum, productand indeed any polynomial combination of a well-bounded operatorand a commuting real scalar-type spectral operator is well-bounded.This generalizes a result of Gillespie for Hilbert space operators. It is shown in particular that if X is a UMD space, then thesum of finitely many commuting real scalar-type spectral operatorsacting on X is a well-bounded operator (a result which failson general reflexive Banach spaces).  相似文献

After a recent work on spectral properties and dispersion relations of the linearized classical Fokker–Planck–Landau operator [8], we establish in this paper analogous results for two more realistic collision operators: The first one is the Fokker–Planck–Landau collision operator obtained by relativistic calculations of binary interactions, and the second is a collision operator (of Fokker–Planck–Landau type) derived from the Boltzmann operator in which quantum effects have been taken into account. We apply Sobolev–Poincaré inequalities to establish the spectral gap of the linearized operators. Furthermore, the present study permits the precise knowledge of the behaviour of these linear Fokker–Planck–Landau operators including the transport part. Relations between the eigenvalues of these operators and the Fourier‐space variable in a neighbourhood of 0 are then investigated. This study is a first natural step when one looks for solutions near equilibrium and their hydrodynamic limit for the full non‐linear problem in all space in the spirit of several works [3, 6, 20, 2] on the non‐linear Boltzmann equation.
