The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. The trends over the last decade are identified, discussed with respect to expected trends and directions for future work suggested.  相似文献

This paper shows how tools and techniques of artificial intelligence can be successfully integrated into a computer system working in the vehicle routing domain. The aim of this system, called ALTO, is to facilitate the development of routing algorithms for transportation vehicles. In this paper, we describe the general algorithmic framework and the rich interface provided by the system to the expert algorithm designer. We also introduce a methodology for acquiring useful knowledge in the domain, based on examples of successful and unsuccessful problem-solving strategies. With such knowledge, ALTO would then be capable of actively supporting the algorithm designer by suggesting good candidate algorithms for solving new problems.  相似文献

Work on the implementation of Group Decision Support Systems has to exploit recent advancements of computer science. Existing frameworks for single-user Decision Support Systems, based on well-established Operations Research methods such as Multicriteria Decision Making techniques, have to be integrated with successful technical developments in electronic communication and computing. Starting from the presentation of the related Operations Research background, this paper proceeds by discussing challenges coming from the areas of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Information Systems on the World Wide Web platform. Based on this discussion, a framework for an ‘open’, computer-mediated Group Decision Support System is proposed. The term ‘open’ is related to a platform-independent system, which can efficiently support alternative types of goals and control protocols between its users.  相似文献

Currently, most combinatorial optimisation problems have to be solved, if the optimum solution is sought, using general techniques to explore the space of feasible solutions and, more specifically, through exploratory enumerative procedures in trees and search graphs. We propose Branch and Win, a general formulation for understanding and synthesising the different tree search procedures that have been presented in the literature of operations research as well as in that of artificial intelligence. Several general ideas are also presented, whose application allows designing new hybrid search algorithms, in order to implement the procedure.  相似文献

Engineers designing submarine oil-pipeline systems for the Beaufort Sea need to know how deep to bury them. Scientists studying ice scour have a major input into this decision; so do the economics of burying and pipeline failures. An operational researcher was asked to examine the way these aspects can be treated and the way they can be fitted together. This paper describes the resulting study, to illustrate how operational research might help in other interfacing contexts.  相似文献

OR groups have been studied from several perspectives and increasingly their role as a means of organising OR work is seen to be subject to a variety of external influences. In this paper OR groups are examined as a form of arranging professional work in organisations using an analytic framework based on concepts from the sociology of professions. The changing character and fortune of such groups is shown to be related to processes involved with the professional character of OR. The role of education, changing organisational contexts, the emergence of other professions and the ability of OR to respond to these are all key factors in explaining the development of OR groups. Issues of relevance to the future of OR groups arising from this analysis are finally considered.  相似文献

Postmodernism and poststructuralism have only been mentioned in passing within this journal. There is much more to be said, and this paper aims to open up the debate, to begin to explore the vast terrain and to present one/some agenda/s for the future, introducing some of the ideas that have inspired O(u)R practice. The paper is in four episodes. We begin by exploring the differences between modernism and postmodernism and introducing some of our sources (episode 1), moving on to the study of language through structuralism and into poststructuralism (episode 2). This section introduces some key concepts and approaches which we illustrate in a short case study (episode 3) of the language of OR. The final section (episode 4) sketches in the outlines of our future agenda. A warning is in order for people unfamiliar with postmodernism: the terminologies and style may seem unusual and untraditional for the journal.  相似文献

The pervasiveness and impact on society and on every day human life of technology has led to a growing awareness that science and technology cannot be considered above or beyond the realm of value judgements and hence of ethics. This is especially true for Operations Research / Management Science (OR/MS), that particular science which is concerned with methodologies for scientifically deciding how to design and operate man-machine systems in an optimal way, usually under conditions requiring the allocation of scarce resources. Here we try to give a historical account of the growing interest for ethics within the OR/MS community from its birth to present days. Starting from attempts to define models and codes of ethical behaviour in our profession, the OR/MS community has arrived at more fundamental questions about the ethical responsibility it faces in a world of growing inequalities and in which the ever greater stress that human activities impose on the environment puts at risk the very survival of human kind.  相似文献

This study explores digital business transformation through the lens of four emerging technology fields: artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud and data analytics (i.e., ABCD). Specifically, the study investigates the operations and value propositions of these distinct but increasingly converging technologies. Due to the dynamic nature of innovation, the potential of this ABCD hybridization, integration, recombination and convergence has yet to be considered. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the findings of the study show wide-reaching and diverse applications among a variety of vertical sectors, presenting exploratory research avenues for future investigation. The study also highlights the practical implications of these new technologies.
