Covalently linked cyclic porphyrin arrays have been synthesized to mimic natural light-harvesting apparatuses and to investigate the highly efficient energy migration processes occurring in these systems for future applications in molecular photonics. To avoid an ensemble-averaged picture, we performed a single-molecule spectroscopic study on the energy migration processes of cyclic porphyrin arrays and a linear model compound embedded in a rigid polymer matrix by recording fluorescence intensity trajectories, by performing coincidence measurements, and by doing wide-field defocused imaging. Our study demonstrates efficient energy migration within the cyclic porphyrin arrays at the single-molecule level. By comparison with the data of the linear model compound, we could pinpoint the role of the dipole-dipole coupling between diporphyrin subunits and the rigidity of the cyclic structures on the energy transfer processes.  相似文献

Femtosecond fluorescence anisotropy measurements for a variety of cyclic porphyrin arrays such as Zn(II)porphyrin m-trimer and hexamer are reported along with o-dimer and monomer as reference molecules. In the porphyrin arrays, a pair of porphyrin moieties are joined together via triphenyl linkage to ensure cyclic and rigid structures. Anisotropy decay times of the porphyrin arrays can be well described by the F?rster incoherent excitation hopping process between the porphyrin units. Exciton coupling strengths of 74 and 264 cm(-1) for the m-trimer and hexamer estimated from the observed excitation energy hopping rates are close to those of B800 and B850, respectively, in the LH2 bacterial light-harvesting antenna. Thus, these cyclic porphyrin array systems have proven to be useful in understanding energy migration processes in a relatively weak interaction regime in light of the similarity in overall structures and constituent chromophores to natural light-harvesting arrays.  相似文献

Intramolecular excitation energy hopping (EEH) time within a dodecameric porphyrin wheel C6ZA, in which six meso-meso linked zinc(II) diporphyrin (Z2) subunits are bridged by 1,3-phenylene spacers, is deduced by a F?rster energy hopping model based on S(1)-S(1) exciton-exciton annihilation and anisotropy depolarization. Under the assumption that the energy hopping sites are six Z2 subunits, two different observables (e.g., exciton-exciton annihilation and anisotropy depolarization times) consistently give the EEH time of 4.0 +/- 0.4 ps via 1,3-phenylene spacer of C6ZA, which is faster than 9.4 ps of linear 2Z2 (1,3-phenylene-linked zinc(II) tetraporphyrin). As a consequence, C6ZA serves as a well-defined two-dimensional model for a light-harvesting complex.  相似文献

Single-molecule photophysical properties of two families of linear porphyrin arrays have been investigated by single-molecule fluorescence detection techniques. Butadiyne-linked arrays (Z(N)B) with extensive π-conjugation perform as photostable one-quantum systems. This demonstration has been suggested by the long-lasting initial emissive state and subsequent discrete one-step photobleaching in the fluorescence intensity trajectories (FITs). As in the behavior of a one-quantum system, Z(N)B shows anti-bunching data in the coincidence measurements. On the other hand, in directly-linked arrays (Z(N)) with strong dipole coupling, each porphyrin moiety keeps individual character in photobleaching dynamics. The stepwise photobleachings in the FITs account for this explanation. Most of the FITs of Z(N) do not carry momentary cessation of fluorescence emission, which has been explained by the strongly bound electron-hole pair of Frenkel exciton that suppresses charge transfer between the molecule and surrounding polymers. These results give insight into the influences of interchromophorinc interactions between porphyrin moieties in the multiporphyrin arrays on their fluorescence dynamics at the single-molecule level.  相似文献

The development of sophisticated microscopic models of energy transfer in linear multichromophoric systems such as conjugated polymers is rarely matched by suitable experimental studies on the microscopic level. To assess the roles of structural, temporal, and energetic disorder in energy transfer, single molecule spectroscopic investigations of the elementary processes leading to energetic relaxation in conjugated polymers are desirable. We present a detailed study of energy transfer processes occurring in dye-endcapped conjugated polymer molecules on the single molecule level. These processes are mostly masked in ensemble investigations. Highly efficient intramolecular energy transfer along a single polyindenofluorene chain to a perylene endcap occurs in many instances and is resolved in real time. We further consider the spectral emission characteristics of the single molecule, the polarization anisotropy which reveals the chain conformation, the fluorescence intermittency, and the temperature dependence and conclude that the efficiency of energy transfer in the ensemble is controlled by the statistics of the individual molecules. The weak thermal activation of energy transfer indicates the involvement of vibrational modes in interchromophoric coupling. Whereas backbone-endcap coupling is strong, the rate-limiting step for intramolecular energy transfer is the migration along the backbone. The results are particularly relevant to understanding undesired exciton trapping on fluorenone defects in polyfluorenes.  相似文献

We have explored a variety of covalently and non-covalently assembled cyclic porphyrin arrays mainly as biomimetic models of light harvesting antenna in photosynthetic systems. The key reaction is Ag(I)-promoted coupling reaction of 5,15-diaryl zinc(II) porphyrin that provides a meso–meso linked diporphyrin. An advantage of this coupling reaction is its extremely easy extension to higher porphyrin arrays, since longer porphyrin arrays have practically the same reactivity as that of the monomer. On the basis of this strategy, we have prepared cyclic porphyrin arrays including directly meso–meso linked porphyrin rings CZ4CZ8, large porphyrin wheels C12ZA and C24ZB, and three-dimensional porphyrin boxes D1D3. Efficient excitation energy transfer along these cyclic porphyrin arrays has been revealed by the time-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence measurements.  相似文献

We studied the temperature dependence of the structural relaxation in poly(vinyl acetate) near the glass transition temperature with single molecule spectroscopy from Tg-1 K to Tg+12 K. The temperature dependence of the observed relaxation times matches results from bulk experiments; the observed relaxation times are, however, 80-fold slower than those from bulk experiments at the same temperature. We attribute this factor to the size of the probe molecule. The individual relaxation times of the single molecule environments are distributed normally on a logarithmic time scale, confirming that the dynamics in poly(vinyl acetate) is heterogeneous. The width of the distribution of individual relaxation times is essentially independent of temperature. The observed full width at half maximum (FWHM) on a logarithmic time axis is approximately 0.7, corresponding to a factor of about 5-fold, significantly narrower than the dielectric spectrum of the same material with a FWHM of about 2.0 on a logarithmic time axis, corresponding to a factor of about 100-fold. We explain this narrow width as the effect of temporal averaging of single molecule fluorescence signals over numerous environments due to a limited lifetime of the probed heterogeneities, indicating that heterogeneities are dynamic. We determine a loose upper limit for the ratio of the structural relaxation time to the lifetime of the heterogeneities (the rate memory parameter) of Q<80 for the range of investigated temperatures.  相似文献

Since highly symmetric cyclic architecture of light-harvesting antenna complex LH2 in purple bacteria was revealed in 1995, there has been a renaissance in developing cyclic porphyrin arrays to duplicate natural systems in terms of high efficiency, in particular, in transferring excitation energy. This tutorial review highlights the mechanisms and rates of excitation energy transfer (EET) in a variety of synthetic cyclic porphyrin arrays on the basis of time-resolved spectroscopic measurements performed at both ensemble and single-molecule levels. Subtle change in structural parameters such as connectivity, distance, and orientation between neighboring porphyrin moieties exquisitely modulates not only the nature of interchromophoric interactions but also the rates and efficiencies of EET. The relationship between the structure and EET dynamics described here should assist a rational design of novel cyclic porphyrin arrays, more contiguous to real applications in artificial photosynthesis.  相似文献

Single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) is a new kind of technique based on atomic force microscope, which allows detecting force as low as pico-newtons directly. Herein based on our recent work, we want to demonstrate the investigation of supramolecular structures and interactions in polymer systems by SMFS, such as desorption force between polymer and substrate, identifiability of polymer micelle and its interaction with surfactant, splitting force of ion-induced helical structure in polysaccharide. It shows well that SMFS is a powerful tool in the study of supramolecular science.  相似文献

The optical properties of one-dimensional arrays of metal nanoshell dimers are studied systematically using the T-matrix method based on Mie theory, within the context of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). It is shown that the local electromagnetic enhancement can be as high as approximately 4.5 x 10(13) for nanoshell dimer arrays with optimal geometry, and sensitive tunability in the resonant frequency can be gained by varying the geometrical parameters, making such structures appealing templates for SERS measurements with single molecule sensitivity. The extraordinarily high enhancement is attributed to a collective photonic effect constructively superposed onto the intrinsic enhancement associated with an isolated nanoshell dimer.  相似文献

This article examines the current status of Markov processes in single molecule fluorescence. For molecular dynamics to be described by a Markov process, the Markov process must include all states involved in the dynamics and the first-passage time (FPT) distributions out of those states must be describable by a simple exponential law. The observation of non-exponential FPT distributions or other evidence of non-Markovian dynamics is common in single molecule studies and offers an opportunity to expand the Markov model to include new dynamics or states that improve understanding of the system.  相似文献

Excitation and decay processes of helium clusters are investigated with fluorescence methods. The results differ remarkably from that obtained for the heavier rare gas clusters. They are discussed in view of the unusual structural and electronic properties of helium.  相似文献

We present highly time-resolved spontaneous fluorescence spectra of a porphyrin array system that consists of an energy donor and an acceptor linked by a phenyl group. The donors are meso-meso directly linked zinc(II) porphyrin arrays and the acceptor is a zinc(II) 5,15-di(phenylethynyl)porphyrin. The spectra over the entire Q (S1) emission band following the excitation of the donor B (S2) state have been measured directly without the conventional spectral reconstruction method. The time-resolved fluorescence spectra revealed detailed energy relaxation processes within the donor and subsequent energy transfer to the acceptor. The observed energy transfer rates to the acceptor are consistent with the Forster energy transfer rates calculated on the assumption that the energy is localized in the Q state of each porphyrin unit of the donor prior to the energy transfer. The passage of the energy deposited initially on one porphyrin unit of the donor to the acceptor illustrates a sequence of energy delocalization and localization processes before it finally reaches the acceptor.  相似文献

The steady-state fluorescence of pyrene and anthracene are used to investigate the relaxation processes of several random ethylene-co-vinyl acetate copolymers, EVA, with defined comonomer compositions (EVA-9, EVA-18, EVA-25, EVA-33 and EVA-40). The temperature of the relaxation processes are compared with those of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). The polymer relaxation processes are assigned to Tg=300-310 K (glass transition temperature of the PVAc); Tα=270-300 K (relaxation processes of the ethylene units present in LDPE and EVA); Tg=220-250 K (glass transition of the LDPE and of the EVA); Tγ or Tβ=160-190 K (relaxation processes of interfacial defects of methylenic chains of LDPE and rotation of the acetate group of the PVAc and the EVA); and Tγ=90-130 K (relaxation processes of small sequences of methylene units of LDPE and end groups of PVAc). An Arrhenius-type function was employed as an attempt to represent the experimental data of fluorescence intensity versus temperature above the γ-relaxation temperature. As obtained with other techniques, there is not a simple relationship between the polymer relaxation processes and the vinyl acetate content that can be explained by the morphology in these copolymers.  相似文献

The rigidity of a p-phenylene oligomer (p-terphenyl) has been investigated by single molecule confocal fluorescence microscopy. Two different rylene diimide dyes attached to the terminal positions of the oligomer allowed for wavelength selective excitation of the two chromophores. In combination with polarization modulation the spatial orientation of the transition dipoles of both end groups could be determined independently. We have analyzed 597 single molecules in two different polymer hosts, polymethylmethacrylate and Zeonex. On average we find a 22 degrees deviation from the linear gas phase geometry (T = 0 K), indicating a rather high flexibility of the p-phenylene oligomer independent of the matrix. To substantiate our experimental results, we have performed quantum chemical calculations at the density functional theory level for the molecular geometry and the electronic excitations. Our findings are in agreement with former experiments on the persistence length of poly(p-phenylenes).  相似文献

Multiporphyrin dendrimers are among the most promising architectures to mimic the oxygenic light-harvesting complex because of their structural similarities and synthetic convenience. The overall geometries of dendrimers are determined by the core structure, the type of dendron, and the number of generations of interior repeating units. The rigid core and bulky volume of exterior porphyrin units in multiporphyrin dendrimers give rise to well-ordered three-dimensional structures. As the number of generations of interior repeating units increases, however, the overall structures of dendrimers become disordered and randomized due to the flexibility of the repeating units. To reveal the relationship between molecular structure and processes of excitation-energy migration in multiporphyrin dendrimers, we calculated the molecular structure and measured the time-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence anisotropy decays for various hexaarylbenzene-anchored polyester zinc(II) porphyrin dendrimers along with three types of porphyrin dendrons as references. We found that the congested two-branched type dendrimers exhibit more efficient energy migration processes than one- or three-branched type dendrimers because of multiple energy migration pathways, and the three-dimensional packing efficiency of dendrimers strongly depends on the type of dendrons.  相似文献

This paper describes a novel method for fabricating and sealing high-density arrays of femtoliter reaction chambers. We chemically etch one end of a 2.3 mm diameter glass optical fiber bundle to create an array of microwells. We then use a contact printing method to selectively modify the surface of the material between microwells with a hydrophobic silane. This modification makes it possible to fill the wells with aqueous solution and then seal them with a droplet of oil, forming an array of isolated reaction chambers. Individual β-galactosidase molecules trapped in these reaction chambers convert a substrate into a fluorescent product that can be readily detected because a high local concentration of product is achieved. This binary readout can be used for ultra-sensitive measurements of enzyme concentration. We observed that the percentage of wells showing enzyme activity was linearly dependent on the concentration of soluble β-galactosidase in the picomolar range. A similar response was also observed for streptavidin-β-galactosidase captured by biotinylated beads. These arrays are also suitable for performing single-molecule kinetics studies on hundreds to thousands of enzyme molecules simultaneously. We observed a broad distribution of catalytic rates for individual β-galactosidase molecules trapped in the microwells, in agreement with previous studies using similar arrays that were mechanically sealed. We have further demonstrated that this femtoliter fiber-optic array can be integrated into a PDMS microfluidic channel system and sealed with oil on-chip, creating an easy to use and high-throughput device for single-molecule analysis.  相似文献

The structure of a cyclic self-assembled tetramer of an asymmetric meso-ethynylpyridyl-functionalized Zn(II)-porphyrin was established by solution-phase X-ray scattering and diffraction; femtosecond transient absorption and anisotropy spectroscopies were used to (a) observe rapid energy transfer (3.8 ps(-1)) between porphyrin subunits and (b) establish that the transfer occurs between adjacent units.  相似文献
