Recent developments have helped to extend the repertoire of mixed-valent ruthenium and osmium complexes beyond conventional systems. This extension has been achieved by using sophisticated ligands and by creating more variegated coordination patterns. The strategies employed include the use of multidentate ligands (which give rise to multinuclear and chelate complexes) and the use several redox active components (non-innocent ligands and oxidation-state ambivalence). The results offer enhanced chemical insight into metal-ligand electron-transfer situations and suggest that mixed-valent materials may eventually be exploited in molecular electronics and molecular computing.  相似文献

The tetranuclear complexes [{(PiPr(3))(2)(CO)ClRu(mu-CH=CHpy)Ru Cl(CO)(PPh(3))(2)}(2)(mu-CH=CH-C(6)H(4)- CH=CH-1,4)] (3 a) and [{(PiPr(3))(2)(CO)ClRu(mu-CH=CHpy)RuCl(CO)(PPh(3))(2)}(2)(mu-CH=CH-C(6)H(4)-CH=CH-1,3)] (3b), which contain vinylpyridine ligands that connect peripheral Ru(PiPr(3))(2)(CO)Cl units to a central divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium core, have been prepared and investigated. These complexes, in various oxidation states up to the tetracation level, have been characterized by standard electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques, including IR, UV/Vis/NIR and ESR spectroscopy. A comparison with the results for the vinylpyridine-bridged dinuclear complex [PiPr(3))(2)(CO)ClRu(mu-CH=CHpy)RuCl(CO)(PPh(3))(2)(CH=CHPh)] (6) and the divinylphenylene-bridged complexes [{(EtOOCpy)(CO)Cl(PPh(3))(2)Ru}(2)(mu-CH=CH-C(6)H(4)-CH=CH-1,4)] (8a) and [{(EtOOCpy)(CO)Cl(PPh(3))(2)Ru}(2)(mu-CH=CH-C(6)H(4)-CH=CH-1,3)] (8b), which represent the outer sections (6) or the inner core (8a,b) of complexes 3a,b, and with the mononuclear complex [(EtOOCpy)(CO)(PPh(3))(2)RuCl(CH=CHPh)] (7) indicate that every accessible oxidation process is primarily centred on one of the vinyl ligands, with smaller contributions from the metal centres. The experimental results and quantum chemical calculations indicate charge- and spin-delocalization across the central divinylphenylenediruthenium part of 3a,b or the styrylruthenium unit of 6, but not beyond. The energy gap between the higher lying styryl- or divinylphenylenediruthenium-based and the lower occupied vinylpyridineruthenium-based orbitals increases in the order 6<3 b<3 a and thus follows the conjugation within the non-heteroatom-substituted aromatic vinyl ligand.  相似文献

The reaction of phenylphosphonic acid (PhPO(3)H(2)) with the mixed-valent basic oxo-centered manganese triangle [Mn(3)O(O(2)CCMe(3))(6)(py)(3)] (1; where py=pyridine) in the presence of a suitable base gives four different manganese clusters depending on the identity of the base. The syntheses and structural characterization of [Mn(18)(mu(3)-O)(8)(PhPO(3))(14)(O(2)CCMe(3))(12)(py)(6)(H(2)O)(2)] (2), [Mn(7)(mu(3)-O)(3)(O(3)PPh)(3)(O(2)CCMe(3))(8)(py)(3)] (3), [Mn(9)Na(mu(3)-O)(4)(mu(4)-O)(2)(O(3)PPh)(2)(O(2)CCMe(3))(12)(H(2)O)(2)(H(2)O)(0.67)(Py)(0.33)] (4), and [Mn(13)(mu(3)-O)(8)(OMe)(8)(O(3)PPh)(4)(O(2)CCMe(3))(10)] (5) are described. Complexes 4 and 5 are homovalent Mn(III) cages, while 2 and 3 contain divalent, trivalent, and/or tetravalent ions. All the manganese centers are valence-localized, the octahedral Mn(III) sites being recognizable by marked Jahn-Teller distortions. The magnetic properties of compounds 2-5 have been investigated in the polycrystalline state by magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements, which reveal that spin ground states vary from 0< or =S > or =8. AC susceptibility measurements performed on 4 and 5, in the 1.6-10.0 K ranges show the presence of out of AC susceptibility signal (chi(M)') for 4, and an effective energy barrier (U(eff)) for the re-orientation of the magnetization is found to be 17 K, but for 5, the chi(M)' maximum is found to be below 1.5 K.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of a series of biphenyl‐derived binuclear ruthenium complexes with terminal {RuCl(CO)(PMe3)3} moieties and different structural arrangements of the phenyl rings are reported. Electrochemical studies revealed that the two metal centers of the binuclear ruthenium complexes interact with each other through the biphenyl bridge, and the redox splittings ΔE1/2 show a strong linear correlation with cos2 ?, where ? is the torsion angle between the two phenyl rings. A combination of electrochemical, UV/Vis/NIR, and in situ IR differential spectroelectrochemical analysis clearly showed that: 1) the intramolecular electronic couplings in the binuclear ruthenium complexes could be modulated by changing ?; 2) the electronic ground state of the mixed‐valent cations changes from delocalized to localized through the biphenyl bridge with increasing torsion angle ?, that is, the redox processes of these complexes change from significant involvement of the bridging ligand to an oxidation behavior with less participation of the bridge.  相似文献

The compound [2‐(aminomethyl)pyridine‐κ2N,N′][chlorido/trifluoromethanesulfonato(0.91/0.09)][(10,11‐η)‐5H‐dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten‐5‐amine‐κN](triphenylphosphane‐κP)ruthenium(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate dichloromethane 0.91‐solvate, [Ru(CF3SO3)0.09Cl0.91(C6H8N2)(C15H13N)(C18H15P)]CF3SO3·0.91CH2Cl2, belongs to a series of RuII complexes that had been tested for transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenation of polar bonds and catalytic transfer hydrogenation. The crystal structure determination of this complex revealed disorder in the form of two different anionic ligands sharing the same coordination site, which other spectroscopic methods failed to characterize. The reduced catalytic activity of the title compound was not fully understood until the crystallographic data provided evidence for the mixed ligand species. The crystal structure clearly shows that the majority of the synthesized material has a chloride ligand present. Only a small portion of the material is the expected complex [RuII(OTf)(ampy)(η2‐tropNH2)(PPh3)]OTf, where OTf is triflate or trifluoromethanesulfonate, ampy is 2‐(aminomethyl)pyridine and tropNH2 is 5H‐dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten‐5‐amine.  相似文献

The redox reaction of [Yb(C(9)H(7))(2)(thf)(2)] with the diazabutadiene PhN==C(Me)--C(Me)==NPh (DAD) has been found to depend on the molar ratio of the reactants. Reaction in a 1:2 molar ratio affords the dinuclear mixed-valent complex [Yb(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(4)-C(9)H(7))(eta(5)-C(9)H(7))(2){mu-eta(4):eta(4)-PhNC(Me)==C(Me)NPh}] containing an indenyl ligand with an unusual mu-eta(5):eta(4) bridging coordination. Reaction of equimolar amounts of these compounds results in an organolanthanide-mediated reductive coupling of the DAD ligands and formation of the tetranuclear mixed-valent complex [Yb(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(4)-C(9)H(7))(eta(5)-C(9)H(7))(2){mu-eta(4):eta(4)-PhNC(CH(2))==C(Me)NPh}](2) with a novel tetradentate tetraimine ligand.  相似文献

The reactions of [Rh(2)Cl(kappa(2)-acac)(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-SbiPr(3))] (3) and [Rh(2)(kappa(2)-acac)(2)(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-SbiPr(3))] (4) with PMe(3) lead to exchange of the bridging ligand and afford the novel PMe(3)-bridged counterparts 5 and 6, in which the phosphane occupies a semibridging (5) or a doubly bridging (6) position. In both cases, the bonding mode was confirmed crystallographically. Treatment of 6 with CO causes a shift of PMe(3) from a bridging to a terminal position and gives the unsymmetrical complex [(kappa(2)-acac)Rh(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-CO)Rh(PMe(3))(kappa(2)-acac)] (7). Similarly to 5 and 6, the related compounds 10 and 11 with one or two acac-f(3) ligands were prepared. While both PEt(3) and PnBu(3) react with 3 by exchange of the bridging stibane for phosphane to give compounds 12 and 13, the reactions of 4 with PMePh(2) and PnBu(3) afford the mixed-valent Rh(0)Rh(II) complexes [(PR(3))Rh(mu-CPh(2))(2)Rh(kappa(2)-acac)(2)] (17, 18) in high yields. In contrast, treatment of 4 with PEt(3) and PMe(2)Ph generates the phosphane-bridged compounds [Rh(2)(kappa(2)-acac)(2)(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-PR(3))] (14, 15) exclusively. Stirring a solution of 14 (R=Et) in benzene for 15 h at room temperature leads to complete conversion to the mixed-valent isomer 16. The reaction of 6 with an equimolar amount of CR(3)CO(2)H (R=F, H) or phenol in the molar ratio of 1:10 results in substitution of one acac by one trifluoracetate, acetate, or phenolate ligand without disturbing the [Rh(2)(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-PR(3))] core. From 6 and an excess of CR(3)CO(2)H, the symmetrical bis(trifluoracetato) and bis(acetate) derivatives [Rh(2)(kappa(2)-O(2)CCR(3))(2)(mu-CPh(2))(2)(mu-PMe(3))] (21, 22) were obtained.  相似文献

Nine cyclometalated ruthenium complexes with a redox‐active diphenylamine unit in the para position to the Ru?C bond were prepared. MeO, Me, and Cl substituents on the diphenylamine unit and three types of auxiliary ligands—bis(N‐methylbenzimidazolyl)pyridine (Mebip), 2,2′:6′,2′′‐terpyridine (tpy), and trimethyl‐4,4′,4′′‐tricarboxylate‐2,2′:6′,2′′‐terpyridine (Me3tctpy)—were used to vary the electronic properties of these complexes. The derivative with an MeO‐substituted amine unit and Me3tctpy ligand was studied by single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. All complexes display two well‐separated redox waves in the potential region of +0.1 to +1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl, and the potential splitting ranges from 360 to 510 mV. Spectroelectrochemical measurements show that these complexes display electrochromism at low potentials and intense near‐infrared (NIR) absorptions. In the one‐electron oxidized form, the complex with the Cl‐substituted amine unit and Mebip ligand shows a moderate ligand‐to‐metal charge transfer at 800 nm. The other eight complexes show asymmetric, narrow, and intense intervalence charge‐transfer transitions in the NIR region, which are independent of the polarity of the solvent. The Mebip‐containing complexes display rhombic or broad isotropic EPR signals, whereas the other seven complexes show relatively narrow isotropic EPR signals. In addition, DFT and time‐dependent DFT studies were performed to gain insights into the spin distributions and NIR absorptions.  相似文献

Intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) solvatochromism studies on the diastereoisomeric forms of [{Ru(bpy)(2)}(2)(mu-BL)](5+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine; BL=a series of di-bidentate polypyridyl bridging ligands) reveal that the solvent dependencies of the IVCT transitions decrease as the "tail" of the bridging ligand is extended, and the extent of delocalisation increases. Utilising a classical theoretical approach for the analysis of the intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) solvatochromism data, the subtle and systematic variation in the electronic properties of the bridging ligands can be correlated with the shift between the localised (class II) and localised-to-delocalised (class II-III) regimes. The investigation of the diastereoisomeric forms of two series of complexes incorporating analogous structurally rigid (fused) and nonrigid (unfused) bridging ligands demonstrates that the differences in the IVCT characteristics of the diastereoisomers of a given complex are accentuated in the latter case, due to a stereochemically induced redox asymmetry contribution. The marked dependence of the IVCT transitions on the stereochemical identity of the complexes provides a quantitative measure of the fundamental contributions of the reorganisational energy and redox asymmetry to the intramolecular electron-transfer barrier at the molecular level.  相似文献

A series of trinuclear Cu(II) complexes with the tris(tetradentate) triplesalen ligands H(6)talen, H(6)talen(tBu(2) ), and H(6)talen(NO(2) ), namely [(talen)Cu(II) (3)] (1), [(talen(tBu(2) ))Cu(II) (3)] (2), and [(talen(NO(2) ))Cu(II) (3)] (3), were synthesized and their molecular and electronic structures determined. These triplesalen ligands provide three salen-like coordination environments bridged in a meta-phenylene arrangement by a phloroglucinol backbone. The structure of [(talen)Cu(II) (3)] (1) was communicated recently. The structure of the tert-butyl derivative [(talen(tBu(2) ))Cu(II) (3)] (2) was established in three different solvates. The molecular structures of these trinuclear complexes show notable differences, the most important of which is the degree of ligand folding around the central Cu(II)-phenolate bonds. This folding is symmetric with regard to the central phloroglucinol backbone in two structures, where it gives rise to bowl-shaped overall geometries. For one solvate two trinuclear triplesalen complexes form a supramolecular disk-like arrangement, hosting two dichloromethane molecules like two pearls in an oyster. The FTIR spectra of these complexes indicate the higher effective nuclear charge of Cu(II) in comparison to the trinuclear Ni(II) complexes by the lower C--O and higher C=N stretching frequencies. The UV/Vis/NIR spectra of 1-3 reflect the stronger ligand folding in the tert-butyl complex 2 by an intense phenolate-to-Cu(II) LMCT. This absorption is absent in 1 and is obscured by the nitro chromophore in 3. The more planar molecular structures cause orthogonality of the Cu(II) d(x(2)-y(2) ) orbital and the phenolate O p(z) orbital, which leads to small LMCT dipole strengths. Whereas 1 and 3 exhibit only irreversible oxidations, 2 exhibits a reversible one-electron oxidation at +0.26 V, a reversible two-electron oxidation at +0.59 V, and a reversible one-electron oxidation at +0.81 V versus Fc(+)/Fc. The one-electron oxidized form 2(+) is strongly stabilized with respect to reference mononuclear salen-like Cu complexes. Chemical one-electron oxidation of 2 to 2(+) allows the determination of its UV/Vis/NIR spectrum, which indicates a ligand-centered oxidation that can be assigned to the central phloroglucinol unit by analogy with the trinuclear Ni triplesalen series. Delocalization of this oxidation over three Cu(II)-phenolate subunits causes the observed energetic stabilization of 2(+). Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal ferromagnetic couplings for all three trinuclear Cu(II) triplesalen complexes. The trend of the coupling constants can be rationalized by two opposing effects: 1) electron-withdrawing terminal substituents stabilize the central Cu(II)-phenolate bond, which results in a stronger coupling, and 2) ligand folding around the central Cu(II)-phenolate bond opens a bonding pathway between the magnetic Cu(II) d(x(2)-y(2) ) orbital and the phenolate O p(z) orbital, which results in a stronger coupling. Density functional calculations indicate that both spin-polarization and spin-delocalization are operative and that slight geometric variations alter their relative magnitudes.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of the extended phloroglucinol ligand H3felddien, its trinuclear NiII complex [(felddien)Ni3](BF4)3 and its trinuclear CuII complex [(felddien)Cu3](ClO4)3 is presented. Detailed NMR studies provide strong evidence that the ligand H3felddien has to be described as the N-protonated tautomer and not as the O-protonated tautomer, with strong contribution of a radialene-like keto-enamine resonance structure resulting in a Cs and a C3h isomer. The trinucleating tris(tetradentate) ligand provides three donor sets comprised of a phenolate, an imine, and two tertiary amine donors. This donor set enables the synthesis of the diamagnetic square-planar coordinated NiII complex [(felddien)Ni3](BF4)3 which provides the opportunity to perform detailed NMR spectroscopic characterizations for the evaluation of the electronic structure of the central phloroglucinol unit. In conjunction with a single-crystal X-ray diffraction and a UV-vis absorption spectroscopic analysis, these data indicate that in the coordinated form, the benzene-like phenolate-imine and the radialene-like keto-enamine resonance structures have contributions to the overall resonance hybrid. The weakening of the central π system as a consequence of the contribution of the keto-enamine resonance structure explains the relative small ferromagnetic interactions in the trinuclear CuII complex [(felddien)Cu3](ClO4)3. This detailed analysis identifies the strong resonance with unsaturated groups in 2,4,6 position of phloroglucinol as the main source for the low ferromagnetic couplings by the spin-polarization mechanism in all our extended phloroglucinol ligands. A replacement of the unsaturated imine functions by saturated amine functions may be a synthetic opportunity to enhance the ferromagnetic interactions by the spin-polarization mechanism in this ligand system.  相似文献

The symmetrically dinuclear title compounds were isolated as diamagnetic [(bpy)2Ru(mu-H2L)Ru(bpy)2](ClO4)2 (1-(ClO4)2) and as paramagnetic [(acac)2Ru(mu-H2L)Ru(acac)2] (2) complexes (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine; acac- = acetylacetonate = 2,4-pentanedionato; H2L = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzoquinonediimine). The crystal structure of 22 H2O reveals an intricate hydrogen-bonding network: Two symmetry-related molecules 2 are closely connected through two NH(H2L2-)O(acac-) interactions, while the oxygen atoms of H2L2- of two such pairs are bridged by an (H2O)8 cluster at half-occupancy. The cluster consists of cyclic (H2O)6 arrangements with the remaining two exo-H2O molecules connecting two opposite sides of the cyclo-(H2O)6 cluster, and oxido oxygen atoms forming hydrogen bonds with the molecules of 2. Weak antiferromagnetic coupling of the two ruthenium(III) centers in 2 was established by using SQUID magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy. Geometry optimization by means of DFT calculations was carried out for 1(2+) and 2 in their singlet and triplet ground states, respectively. The nature of low-energy electronic transitions was explored by using time-dependent DFT methods. Five redox states were reversibly accessible for each of the complexes; all odd-electron intermediates exhibit comproportionation constants K(c)>10(8). UV-visible-NIR spectroelectrochemistry and EPR spectroscopy of the electrogenerated paramagnetic intermediates were used to ascertain the oxidation-state distribution. In general, the complexes 1n+ prefer the ruthenium(II) configuration with electron transfer occurring largely at the bridging ligand (mu-H2Ln-), as evident from radical-type EPR spectra for 13+ and (+. Higher metal oxidation states (iii, iv) appear to be favored by the complexes 2m; intense long-wavelength absorption bands and RuIII-type EPR signals suggest mixed-valent dimetal configurations of the paramagnetic intermediates 2+ and 2-.  相似文献

A ditopic benzobis(carbene) ligand precursor was prepared that contained a chelating pyridyl moiety to ensure co‐planarity of the carbene ligand and the coordination plane of a bound octahedral metal center. Bimetallic ruthenium complexes comprising this ditopic ligand [L4Ru‐C,N‐bbi‐C,N‐RuL4] were obtained by a transmetalation methodology (C,N‐bbi‐C,N=benzobis(N‐pyridyl‐N′‐methyl‐imidazolylidene). The two metal centers are electronically decoupled when the ruthenium is in a pseudotetrahedral geometry imparted by a cymene spectator ligand (L4=[(cym)Cl]). Ligand exchange of the Cl?/cymene ligands for two bipyridine or four MeCN ligands induced a change of the coordination geometry to octahedral. As a consequence, the ruthenium centers, separated through space by more than 10 Å, become electronically coupled, which is evidenced by two distinctly different metal‐centered oxidation processes that are separated by 134 mV (L4=[(bpy)2]; bpy=2,2′‐bipyridine) and 244 mV (L4=[(MeCN)4]), respectively. Hush analysis of the intervalence charge‐transfer bands in the mixed‐valent species indicates substantial valence delocalization in both complexes (delocalization parameter Γ=0.41 and 0.37 in the bpy and MeCN complexes, respectively). Spectroelectrochemical measurements further indicated that the mixed‐valent RuII/RuIII species and the fully oxidized RuIII/RuIII complexes gradually decompose when bound to MeCN ligands, whereas the bpy spectators significantly enhance the stability. These results demonstrate the efficiency of carbenes and, in particular, of the bbi ligand scaffold for mediating electron transfer and for the fabrication of molecular redox switches. Moreover, the relevance of spectator ligands is emphasized for tailoring the degree of electronic communication through the benzobis(carbene) linker.  相似文献

A kind of new lanthanocene complex with an ansa carbonous‐bridged cyclopentadienyl/aromatic heterocycle ligand was prepared and characterized. Based on the data of elemental analyses, MS and IR, they were presumed to be solvent‐free complexes (cyclo‐C4H3SCMe2C5H4)2LnCl [Ln = Er (1), Dd ( 2 ), Y ( 3 ), Sm ( 4 )]. These complexes were effective for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of co‐catalyst. When AlEt3 and NaH (nanometric) were used as different co‐catalysts, the lanthanocene complexes 1–4 showed different catalytic behavior. These differences resulted from the formation of different active species. The catalyst system (cyclo‐C4H3SCMe2C5H4)2LnCl/NaH (nanometric) showed high catalytic activity (yield ≥ 95% and Mη > 105) in a short time at the ambient temperature. The synthesis and characterization of copper(I) complexes of the novel pyridine‐containing macrocyclic ligand (PC‐L) and their use as catalysts in the Henry reaction are reported. The pyridine‐based 12‐membered tetraaza macrocyclic (PC‐L) ligand 1 can be obtained in good overall yield (85%) from commercially available starting materials. The Cu(I) complexes showed good catalytic activities in the Henry reaction of different aldehydes and nitroalkanes. Remarkable diastereoselectivity was observed when isatine was reacted with nitroethane under catalytic conditions. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
