The behavior of water molecules surrounding a protein can have an important bearing on its structure and function. Consequently, a great deal of attention has been focused on changes in the relaxation dynamics of water when it is located at the protein surface. Here we use the ultrafast optical Kerr effect to study the H-bond structure and dynamics of aqueous solutions of proteins. Measurements are made for three proteins as a function of concentration. We find that the water dynamics in the first solvation layer of the proteins are slowed by up to a factor of 8 in comparison to those in bulk water. The most marked slowdown was observed for the most hydrophilic protein studied, bovine serum albumin, whereas the most hydrophobic protein, trypsin, had a slightly smaller effect. The terahertz Raman spectra of these protein solutions resemble those of pure water up to 5 wt % of protein, above which a new feature appears at ~80 cm(-1), which is assigned to a bending of the protein amide chain. 相似文献

The ultrafast dynamics of the isotropic phase of a liquid crystal 4'-pentyl-4-p-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB) have been investigated using polarization resolved optical Kerr effect spectroscopy. Measurements were made as a function of both temperature and dilution in nonpolar solvents. To separate single molecule and interaction induced components to the relaxation of the induced birefringence, measurements of both the anisotropic and isotropic response were made. The isotropic response was found to be dominated by a damped low-frequency mode of intramolecular origin. There is a minor additional component assigned to an interaction induced contribution. There is at most an extremely weak isotropic signal beyond 1 ps, showing that the picosecond time scale dynamics of 5CB are dominated by orientational relaxation. The isotropic response is independent of temperature in the range studied (0.2-50 K above the nematic to isotropic phase-transition temperature). The anisotropic response exhibits relaxation dynamics on time scales spanning subpicosecond to several hundred picoseconds and beyond. The fastest components are dominated by a librational response, but there are smaller contributions from three low-frequency intramolecular modes, and a contribution from interaction induced effects. The low-frequency spectral density extracted from these data are independent of temperature in the range studied, 0.2-30 K above the phase-transition temperature, but shift to lower frequency on dilution in alkane solvents. In neat 5CB the picosecond time scale orientational dynamics are dominated by temperature-independent reorientation within the pseudonematic domains, while in solution these are disrupted, and the orientational response becomes faster and temperature dependent. 相似文献

A previously proposed model for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of liquid sulfur dioxide, SO(2), has been reviewed. Thermodynamic, structural, and dynamical properties were calculated for a large range of thermodynamic states. Predicted (P,V,T) of simulated system agrees with an elaborated equation of state recently proposed for liquid SO(2). Calculated heat capacity, expansion coefficient, and isothermal compressibility are also in good agreement with experimental data. Calculated equilibrium structure agrees with X-ray and neutron scattering measurements on liquid SO(2). The model also predicts the same (SO(2))(2) dimer structure as previously determined by ab initio calculations. Detailed analysis of equilibrium structure of liquid SO(2) is provided, indicating that, despite the rather large dipole moment of the SO(2) molecule, the structure is mainly determined by the Lennard-Jones interactions. Both single-particle and collective dynamics are investigated. Temperature dependency of dynamical properties is given. The MD results are compared with previous findings obtained from the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering spectra of liquid SO(2), including wave-vector dependent structural relaxation, tau(k), and viscosity, eta(k). 相似文献

Changes in the ultrafast dynamics and terahertz Raman spectrum accompanying a helix-to-coil transition of a homo-polypeptide have been observed for the first time. Formation of the alpha-helix is associated with a shift to lower frequency of a broad Raman band attributable to solvent-peptide intermolecular hydrogen bonding. This band facilitates direct spectroscopic observation of so-called hydration water near a peptide and yields the first quantitative estimate of the time scale of the ultrafast dynamics in the solvation shell, which range from 0.18 to 0.33 ps (185-100 cm(-1)) depending on the secondary structure of the peptide. Such fast motions of solvent molecules have been referred to as the "lubricant of life" and are thought to play key roles in determining structure and activity of proteins. 相似文献

Transient evolution of light-induced molecular reorientation both in 1-amino-anthraquinone (1AAQ) dye and azobenzene doped isotropic liquid crystals (LCs) were studied by time-resolved optically heterodyned optical Kerr effect method. The results give clear direct experimental proof that under short pulse (30 ps) excitation, LC molecules orientate toward the excitation light polarization direction in the 1AAQ/LC system. However, LC molecular orientation becomes orthogonal to the light polarization in azobenzene/LC system. Time-resolved excited-state absorption of 1AAQ and wavelength dependent excited-state absorption of azobenzene were also observed and their contributions to the early dynamics of the third order optical responses of the two systems were confirmed. A simplified two-level mean-field theory was derived to reveal the intensity dependence of orientation enhancement factor in azobenzene/LC system considering the photoisomerization process. 相似文献

Optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr optical activity (OHD-RIKOA) is a nonresonant ultrafast chiroptical technique for measuring the terahertz-frequency Raman spectrum of chirally active modes in liquids, solutions, and glasses of chiral molecules. OHD-RIKOA has the potential to provide much more information on the structure of molecules and the symmetries of librational and vibrational modes than the well-known nonchirally sensitive technique optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr-effect spectroscopy (OHD-RIKES). The theory of OHD-RIKOA is presented and possible practical ways of performing the experiments are analyzed. 相似文献

Ultrafast molecular dynamics of liquid poly(ethylene glycol)s, tetra(ethylene glycol), penta(ethylene glycol), and poly(ethylene glycol) with the molecular weight of 600, and crown ethers, 12-crown-4 and 15-crown-5, have been investigated by means of femtosecond optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy. Picosecond Kerr transients of poly(ethylene glycol)s and crown ethers are characterized by a biexponential function with the time constants of about 2 and 20 ps. Both the faster and slower time constants do not vary much among the five oligo(ethylene oxide)s. Femtosecond dynamics is discussed based on the Kerr (depolarized Raman) spectra obtained by Fourier transform deconvolution analysis of the high time resolution Kerr transients. The broad low-frequency band (0-200 cm(-1)) in the Kerr spectrum is analyzed by two Brownian oscillators. The spectral shapes of linear poly(ethylene glycol) and cyclic crown ether are very different. Both the low- and high-frequency Brownian oscillators for crown ethers show lower frequency and broader spectral features than those for poly(ethylene glycol)s. The comparison of the low-frequency spectra of poly(ethylene glycol)s and crown ethers shows that the low-frequency spectrum of 15-crown-5 is closer to that of poly(ethylene glycol)s than that of 12-crown-4 is. The difference of the low-frequency spectra between poly(ethylene glycol) and crown ether is discussed with the concepts of molecular conformation and liquid density. The features of the observed intramolecular vibrational bands are also correlated with the molecular conformations. 相似文献

Structural relaxation in the peptide model N-methylacetamide (NMA) is studied experimentally by ultrafast optical Kerr effect spectroscopy over the normal-liquid temperature range and compared to the relaxation measured in water at room temperature. It is seen that in both hydrogen-bonding liquids, beta relaxation is present, and in each case, it is found that this can be described by the Cole-Cole function. For NMA in this temperature range, the alpha and beta relaxations are each found to have an Arrhenius temperature dependence with indistinguishable activation energies. It is known that the variations on the Debye function, including the Cole-Cole function, are unphysical, and we introduce two general modifications: One allows for the initial rise of the function, determined by the librational frequencies, and the second allows the function to be terminated in the alpha relaxation. 相似文献

This article reports a study of the effect of anions on the optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectra of binary ionic liquid mixtures with one mixture comprising the 3-methyl-1-pentylimidazolium ([C 5mim] (+)) cation and the anions PF 6 (-) and CF 3CO 2 (-) (TFA (-)), and another mixture comprising the [C 5mim] (+) cation and the anions Br (-) and bis(trifluomethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf 2 (-)). The spectra were obtained by the use of optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr Effect Spectroscopy at 295 K. The OKE spectra of the mixtures are compared with the calculated mole-fraction weighted sum of the normalized OKE spectra of the neat liquids. The OKE spectra are nearly additive for [C 5mim]Br/[C 5mim][NTf 2] mixtures, but nonadditive for [C 5mim][PF 6]/[C 5mim][TFA] mixtures. In the case of the equimolar [C 5mim][PF 6]/[C 5mim][TFA] mixture, the nonadditivity is such that the experimental OKE spectrum is narrower than the calculated OKE spectrum. The additivity or nonadditivity of OKE spectra for IL mixtures can be explained by assuming ionic liquids are nanostructurally organized into nonpolar regions and ionic networks. The ionic networks in mixtures will be characterized by "random co-networks" for anions that are nearly the same in size (PF 6 (-) and TFA (-)) and by "block co-networks" for anions that differ greatly in size (Br (-) and NTf 2 (-)). 相似文献

We have performed classical molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the Optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectra of 1-methoxyethylpyridinium dicyanoamide, a room-temperature ionic liquid (IL) which has been recently studied by Shirota and Castner (Shirota, H. ; Castner, E. J. Phys. Chem. A 2005, 109, 9388-9392) in comparison to its neutral isoelectronic solvent mixture. Our theoretical and computational studies show that the decay of the collective polarizability anisotropy correlation exhibits several different time scales originating from inter- and intramolecular dynamics, in good agreement with experiments. What's more, we find that the portion of the collective anisotropic polarizability relaxation due to "interaction-induced" phenomena is important at times much longer than those observed in normal solvents when these are far from their glass transition temperature. From our long (60 ns) molecular dynamics simulations, we are able to determine the appropriate time scales for orientational relaxation and interaction-induced processes occurring in the liquid. We find that the cationic contribution to the OKE signal is predominant. Because of the slow nature of relaxation processes in ILs, these calculations are very time, memory, and storage intensive. In the context of this research, we have developed a polarizable force field for this system and also theoretical methodology to generate molecular polarizabilities for arbitrarily shaped molecules and ions from corresponding atomic polarizabilities. We expect this methodology to have an important impact on the speed of molecular dynamics simulations of polarizable systems in the future. 相似文献

Ultrafast optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectroscopy has been used to study the temperature-dependent dynamics of five aromatic liquids: benzene, benzene-d(6), hexafluorobenzene, mesitylene, and 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene. The intermediate response time of all of the liquids was found to scale with the collective orientational correlation time, as has been observed for other simple liquids. The spectra of hexafluorobenzene, 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene, and mesitylene are qualitatively different from those of the other liquids and exhibit different behavior with temperature. These spectra allow us to assess the influence of different molecular parameters on the shape of the OKE spectrum. On the basis of these data, we propose a model that links the differences in the OKE spectra to corresponding differences in the local ordering of the liquids. 相似文献

The radiation-induced copolymerization of ethylene and sulfur dioxide has been studied in the liquid and gas phases. In the liquid phase, the copolymer composition remained equimolar over a temperature range of 20–160°C. and ethylene pressures of 50–680 atm. The rate of copolymerization in the liquid phase at 680 atm. increased with temperature to a maximum value at ~80°C. Above this temperature the rate steadily decreased to zero at 157°C. because of temperature-dependent depropagation reactions. In the gas phase, copolymers were formed that contained from 9 to 46 mole-% sulfur dioxide. Under constant conditions of temperature, pressure, and radiation intensity, the copolymerization rate in the gas phase increased with increasing sulfur dioxide in the initial gas mixture. The propagating species for the liquid-phase experiments is considered to consist of an equimolar complex molecule of ethylene and sulfur dioxide. For gas mixtures containing an excess molar concentration of ethylene, the propagating species are ethylene and the complex molecule. Infrared spectra show polysulfone structures. Calorimetric and x-ray diffraction analyses indicate crystalline structures for copolymers in the range 9–50 mole-% sulfur dioxide, although a melt transition temperature could not be observed for copolymer containing >31 mole-% sulfur dioxide. Clear uniform film was obtained with copolymers containing up to 31 mole-% SO2. 相似文献

Molecular dynamics investigation with the time resolved optical Kerr effect on the CS2-C6H6 mixtures
An investigation of the molecular dynamics in pure liquids and in mixtures through the technique of time resolved optical Kerr effect is performed. The samples studied were the mixtures of carbon disulfide (CS(2)) with benzene (C(6)H(6)). The molecular dynamics of the pure liquids is briefly discussed while the main results are obtained for the mixtures. A slow dynamics component is observed for the optical heterodyne detected optical Kerr effect transient decaying exponentially with time constants on picosecond time scale. The fast subpicosend time relaxations are analyzed in terms of the nondiffusive component of the spectral response that is associated with the molecular dynamics. The modifications of the spectrum are quantified, and the explanation of the observed changes is given in terms of the structural interaction configurations that produced changes in the intermolecular potential within which the molecules execute librational motions. 相似文献

The effect of adding SO2 on the structure and dynamics of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BMIBr) was investigated by low-frequency Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD simulations indicate that the long-range structure of neat BMIBr is disrupted resulting in a liquid with relatively low viscosity and high conductivity, but strong correlation of ionic motion persists in the BMIBr-SO2 mixture due to ionic pairing. The relaxation time of the Kerr effect of nitrobenzene and m-nitrotoluene in various mixtures with carbon tetrachloride and various alcohols was determined by measuring the kinetics of the Kerr effect using picosecond laser techniques. These measurements yield information on the rotational motion of molecules in liquids. The relaxation time data are interpreted in terms of an effective local viscosity effect, pair correlation, and coupling of rotational motion with shear modes. 相似文献

The low-frequency spectrum of homeotropically aligned 4-octyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl in the smectic-A (Sm-A) phase was obtained by using optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy. The absence of a narrow band at 9 cm−1, corresponding to a pseudo-lattice vibration propagating in a direction perpendicular to the smectic layers, suggests that the spectrum of homeotropically aligned Sm-A is due to orientational modes associated with rotation about the long axis of the molecule and translational modes associated with motion in the smectic layers. The spectrum is described by a bimodal lineshape function in which the lower and higher frequency components are attributed respectively to the translational and orientational modes. 相似文献

In this paper we report a temperature study of Brillouin scattering and optical Kerr effect in the ethane-1,2-diol dimethacrylate, pentane-1,5-diol dimethacrylate and hexane-1,6-diol dimethacrylate belonging to the series of dimethacrylate homologues. Using these methods we have studied the temperature behaviour of the hypersonic velocity, adiabatic compressibility and optical Kerr constant in the temperature range from 283 to 323 K.
The obtained results are compared to those obtained earlier from Brillouin scattering and optical Kerr effect experiments for butane-1,4-diol dimethacrylate and 2,2′-thiodiethyl dimethacrylate (a sulfur-containing monomer). The results are also discussed in terms of changes in the intermolecular interactions and arrangement in the liquid compounds under study. 相似文献

We present a detailed, temperature-dependent, optical Kerr effect (OKE) study of pyridine, pyridine-d(5), 2,4,6-trifluoropyridine, 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine, and 1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene. By combining these data with those for other aromatic liquids that we have studied previously (Loughnane, B. J.; Scodinu, A.; Fourkas J. T. J. Phys. Chem. B, 2006, 110, 5708), we are able to assess the relative importance of molecular shape and electrostatic forces in determining the form of the OKE reduced spectral density for such liquids. 相似文献

A molecular dynamics simulation study is presented for the relaxation of the polarizability anisotropy in liquid mixtures of formamide and water, using a dipolar induction scheme that involves the intrinsic polarizability and first hyperpolarizability tensors of the molecules, and the dipole-quadrupole polarizability of water species. The long time diffusive decay of the collective polarizability anisotropy correlations exhibits a substantial slowing down as the formamide mole fraction increases in the mixture. The diffusive times for the polarizability relaxation obtained from the authors' simulations are in good agreement with optical Kerr effect experimental data, and they are found to correlate nearly linearly with the estimated mean lifetimes of the hydrogen bonds within the mixture, suggesting that the relaxation of the hydrogen bond network is responsible to some extent for the collective relaxation of the polarizability anisotropy of the mixture. The short time behavior of the polarizability anisotropy relaxation was investigated by computing the nuclear response function, R(t), which is very rapidly dominated by the formamide contribution as it is added to water, due to the much larger polarizability anisotropy of formamide molecules compared to that of water. Several contributions to the Raman spectrum were also analyzed as a function of composition, and the dynamical origin of the different bands was determined. 相似文献
