The process of NO adsorption on the cationic cluster Rh(6)(+) is investigated using the density-functional theory (DFT) with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to exchange and correlation. We determine the geometries, electronic structure, and relevant energies for different structural and spin isomers of Rh(6)(0,±), and we study the consecutive adsorption of two NO molecules on the cationic cluster Rh(6)(+). With regard to the first NO molecule, different adsorption energies are found for the ground state octahedral structure of the bare cationic cluster and for the first isomer, which, having a prism-type structure, undergoes a structural transition to an octahedral symmetry upon dissociative adsorption of NO. Several dissociative NO adsorption processes are analyzed in comparison with molecular adsorption of NO to give support to the first step of the reaction inferred from experiments. With regard to the adsorption of a second NO molecule, the intermediate with lowest energy contains a preformed N(2) molecule. The energy of that complex is about 0.7 eV smaller than the sum of the free N(2) energy plus the lowest energy of the Rh(6)(+)-O(2) complex. This complex is composed of two separated O atoms occupying adjacent 2-fold bridging positions of the nearly undistorted Rh(6)(+) octahedral cluster. These findings are in qualitative agreement with experiments.

Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism of selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia in the presence of oxygen at the Br?nsted acid sites of H-form zeolites. The Br?nsted acid site of H-form zeolites was modeled by an aluminosilicate cluster containing five tetrahedral (Al, Si) atoms. A low-activation-energy pathway for the catalytic reduction of NO was proposed. It consists of two successive stages: first NH(2)NO is formed in gas phase, and then is decomposed into N(2) and H(2)O over H-form zeolites. In the first stage, the formation of NH(2)NO may occur via two routes: (1) NO is directly oxidized by O(2) to NO(2), and then NO(2) combines with NO to form N(2)O(3), which reacts with NH(3) to produce NH(2)NO; (2) when NO(2) exceeds NO in the content, NO(2) associates with itself to form N(2)O(4), and then N(2)O(4) reacts with NH(3) to produce NH(2)NO. The second stage was suggested to proceed with low activation energy via a series of synergic proton transfer steps catalyzed by H-form zeolites. The rate-determining step for the whole reduction of NO(x) is identified as the oxidation of NO to NO(2) with an activation barrier of 15.6 kcal mol(-1). This mechanism was found to account for many known experimental facts related to selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia over H-form zeolites.

The decomposition of nitric oxide on small charged rhodium clusters Rh(n)(+/-) (6 < n < 30) has been investigated by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. For both cationic and anionic naked clusters, the rates of reaction with NO increase smoothly with cluster size in the range studied without the dramatic size-dependent fluctuations often associated with the reactions of transition-metal clusters. The cationic clusters react significantly faster than the anions and both exhibit rate constants exceeding collision rates calculated by average dipole orientation theory. Both the approximate magnitude and the trends in reactivity are modeled well by the surface charge capture model recently proposed by Kummerl?we and Beyer. All clusters studied here exhibit pseudo-first-order kinetics with no sign of biexponential kinetics often interpreted as evidence for multiple isomeric structures. Experiments involving prolonged exposure to NO have revealed interesting size-dependent trends in the mechanism and efficiency of NO decomposition: For most small clusters (n < 17), once two NO molecules are coadsorbed on a cluster, N(2) is evolved, generating the corresponding dioxide cluster. By analogy with experiments on extended surfaces, this observation is interpreted in terms of the dissociative adsorption of NO in the early stages of reaction, generating N atoms that are mobile on the surface of the cluster. For clusters where n < 13, this chemistry, which occurs independently of the cluster charge, repeats until a size-dependent, limiting oxygen coverage is achieved. Following this, NO is observed to adsorb on the oxide cluster without further N(2) evolution. For n = 14-16 no single end-point is observed and reaction products are based on a small range of oxide structures. By contrast, no evidence for N(2) production is observed for clusters n = 13 and n > 16, for which simple sequential NO adsorption dominates the chemistry. Interestingly, there is no evidence for the production of N(2)O or NO(2) on any of the clusters studied. A simple general mechanism is proposed that accounts for all observations. The detailed decomposition mechanisms for each cluster exhibit size (and, by implication, structure) dependent features with Rh(13)(+/-) particularly anomalous by comparison with neighboring clusters.

<正>The adsorption of NO on the M/c-ZrO_2(110)(M=Ru,Rh)surface has been studied with periodic slab model by PW91 approach of GGA within the framework of density functional theory. The results of geometry optimization indicated that the hollow site is energetically stable for Ru and Rh atoms' adsorption on the c-ZrO_2(110)surface with adsorption energies of 207.4 and 106.3 kJ/mol,respectively.When NO is adsorbed on the M/ZrO_2(110)surface,the N-down adsorption is the most stable. We also studied the adsorption of double NO on the M/c-ZrO_2(110)surface.Complete linear synchronous transit and quadratic synchronous transit approaches were used to search the transition state for dissociation reaction.NO has two possible dissociation passways:(1)2NO→N_2(g)+20(ads),(2)2NO→N_2O(g)+O(ads),and the former is easier than the latter based on the calculation results.

B3LYP/LANL2DZ and B3LYP/6-31G(d)-restricted and -unrestricted calculations are employed to calculate energies and adsorption forms of formaldehyde adsorbed on planar and on tetrahedral Pd4 clusters and on a Pd4 cluster supported on Al10O15. Formaldehyde adsorbs on planar Pd4 in the eta(2)(C,O)-di-sigma adsorption mode, while on tetrahedral Pd4, it adsorbs in the eta(2)(C,O)-pi adsorption mode. The adsorption energy on planar Pd4 is -21.4 kcal x mol(-1), whereas for the tetrahedral Pd4 cluster, the adsorption energy is -13.2 kcal x mol(-1). The latter value is close to experimental findings (-12 to -14 kcal x mol(-1)). Adsorption of formaldehyde on Pd4 supported on an Al10O15 cluster leads essentially to the same result as that found for adsorption on the tetrahedral Pd4 cluster. Charge density analysis for the interaction between formaldehyde and the Pd4 clusters indicates strong backdonation in the eta(2) adsorption mode, leading to positive charge on the Pd4 cluster. NBO analysis shows that the highly coordinated octahedral aluminum atoms of Al10O15 donate electron density to the supported Pd4 cluster, while tetrahedral aluminum atoms with lower coordination number have acidic nature and therefore act as electron acceptors.

Organic thiols are known to react with gold surface to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which can be used to produce materials with highly attractive properties. Although the structure of various SAMs is widely investigated, some aspects of their formation still represent a matter of debate. One of these aspects is the mechanism of S-H bond dissociation in thiols upon interaction with gold. This work presents a new suggestion for this mechanism on the basis of DFT study of methanethiol interaction with a single gold atom and a Au(20) cluster. The reaction path of dissociation is found to be qualitatively independent of the model employed. However, the highest activation barrier of S-H bond dissociation on the single gold atom (12.9 kcal/mol) is considerably lower than that on the Au(20) cluster (28.9 kcal/mol), which can be attributed to the higher extent of gold unsaturation. The energy barrier of S-H cleavage decreases by 4.6 kcal/mol in the presence of the second methanethiol molecule at the same adsorption site on the model gold atom. In the case of the Au(20) cluster we have observed the phenomenon of hydrogen transfer from one methanethiol molecule to another, which allows reducing the energy barrier of dissociation by 9.1 kcal/mol. This indicates the possibility of the "relay" hydrogen transfer to be the key step of the thiol adsorption observed for the SAMs systems.

We applied periodic density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the dehydrogenation of ethanol on a Rh/CeO2 (111) surface. Ethanol is calculated to have the greatest energy of adsorption when the oxygen atom of the molecule is adsorbed onto a Ce atom in the surface, relative to other surface atoms (Rh or O). Before forming a six-membered ring of an oxametallacyclic compound (Rh-CH2CH2O-Ce(a)), two hydrogen atoms from ethanol are first eliminated; the barriers for dissociation of the O-H and the beta-carbon (CH2-H) hydrogens are calculated to be 12.00 and 28.57 kcal/mol, respectively. The dehydrogenated H atom has the greatest adsorption energy (E(ads) = 101.59 kcal/mol) when it is adsorbed onto an oxygen atom of the surface. The dehydrogenation continues with the loss of two hydrogens from the alpha-carbon, forming an intermediate species Rh-CH2CO-Ce(a), for which the successive barriers are 34.26 and 40.84 kcal/mol. Scission of the C-C bond occurs at this stage with a dissociation barrier Ea = 49.54 kcal/mol, to form Rh-CH(2(a)) + 4H(a) + CO(g). At high temperatures, these adsorbates desorb to yield the final products CH(4(g)), H(2(g)), and CO(g).

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the adsorption, desorption, and dissociation of NO on the stepped Pt (533) surface. By combining temperature programmed desorption and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy, information about the adsorption sites at different temperatures is obtained. Surprisingly, metastable adsorption structures of NO can be produced through variation of the dosing temperature. We also show that part of the NO molecules adsorbed on the step sites dissociates around 450 K. After dissociation the N atoms can desorb either by combining with an O fragment, or with another N atom, resulting in NO and N(2). The N(2) production can be enhanced by coadsorbing CO on the surface: CO scavenges the oxygen atom, thereby suppressing associative recombinative desorption of N and O atoms. Density functional theory calculations are used to reveal the adsorption energies and vibrational frequencies of adsorbed NO as well as barriers for dissociation of NO and for diffusion of N atoms. The combined experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that dissociation of NO is the rate limiting step in the formation of N(2).

We studied the mechanism of the N+NO reaction on Rh(111) surfaces by means of fast near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. This reaction is important as a basis of NOx reduction reactions on platinum-group metal surfaces. Atomic nitrogen layers on Rh(111) were titrated with NO at various temperatures. N2O is exclusively formed and desorbs into the gas phase below 350 K. The consumption rate of atomic nitrogen exhibits strange temperature dependence between 100 and 350 K; the reaction proceeds slower with increasing temperature. Reaction kinetics analyses and isotope-controlled experiments have revealed that the surface N atoms do not react with chemisorbed NO molecules but with NO dimers weakly bound on top of the chemisorbed layer, which play a role as an extrinsic precursor. The present results may support the possibility that NO dimers participate in various NO-related synthetic, biochemical, and surface reactions as an intermediate.

Quantum-chemical calculations were performed on the mechanisms of reaction of NCN with NO and NS. Possible mechanisms were classified according to four pathways yielding products in the following four possible groups: N2O/N2S + CN, N2 + NCO/NCS, N2 + CNO/CNS, and CNN + NO/NS, labeled in order from p1/p1s to p4/p4s. The local structures, transition structures, and potential-energy surfaces with respect to the reaction coordinates are calculated, and the barriers are compared. In the NCN + NO reaction, out of several adduct structures, only the nitroso adduct NCNNO lies lower in energy than the reactants, by 21.89 kcal/mol; that adduct undergoes rapid transformation into the products, in agreement with experimental observation. For the NS counterpart, both thionitroso NCNNS and thiazyl NCNSN adducts have energies much lower than those of the reactants, by 43 and 29 kcal/mol, respectively, and a five-membered-ring NCNNS (having an energy lower than those of the reactants by 36 kcal/mol) acts as a bridge in connecting these two adducts. The net energy barriers leading to product channels other than p4s are negative for the NS reaction, whereas those for the NO analogue are all positive. The channel leading to p1 (N2O + CN) has the lowest energy (3.81 kcal/mol), whereas the channels leading to p2 (N2 + NCO) and p2s (N2 + NCS) are the most exothermic (100.94 and 107.38 kcal/mol, respectively).

We report investigations of adsorption of N(2) and O(2) molecules on silver cluster cations. We have first revisited structures of small silver clusters based on first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory with hybrid functional. The 2D to 3D transition for the neutral clusters occurs from n = 6 to 7 and for cations, in agreement with experiments, from n = 4 to 5. With the refined structures, adsorption energies of N(2) and O(2) molecules have been calculated. We have identified characteristic drops in the adsorption energies of N(2) that further link our calculations and experiments, and confirm the reported 2D-3D transition for cations. We have found that perturbations caused by physisorbed molecules are small enough that the structures of most Ag clusters remain unchanged, even though physisorption stabilizes the 3D Ag(7)(+) structure slightly more than the 2D counterpart. Results for pure O(2) adsorption indicate that charge transfer from Ag(n)(+) to O(2) occurs when n > 3. Below that size oxygen essentially physisorbes such as nitrogen to the cluster. We interpret the experimentally observed mutually cooperative co-adsorption of oxygen and nitrogen using results from density functional theory with generalized gradient approximations. The key to the enhancement is N(2)-induced increase in charge transfer from Ag(n)(+) cations to O(2).

The oxidation of carbon monoxide with nitrous oxide on mass-selected Au(3)(+) and Ag(3)(+) clusters has been investigated under multicollision conditions in an octopole ion trap experiment. The comparative study reveals that for both gold and silver cations carbon dioxide is formed on the clusters. However, whereas in the case of Au(3)(+) the cluster itself acts as reactive species that facilitates the formation of CO(2) from N(2)O and CO, for silver the oxidized clusters Ag(3)O(x)(+) (n=1-3) are identified as active in the CO oxidation reaction. Thus, in the case of the silver cluster cations N(2)O is dissociated and one oxygen atom is suggested to directly react with CO, whereas a second kind of oxygen strongly bound to silver is acting as a substrate for the reaction.

The mechanisms for the reaction of propylene glycol (PG) with CO2 catalyzed by 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) were theoretically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Through analyzing the optimized structures and energy profiles along the reaction paths, the PG-activated route was identified as the most probable reaction path, in which the rate-determining step was the nucleophilic attack of one of the O atoms in CO2 on the hydroxyl linked C atom in PG with energy barrier 56.96 kcal/mol. The catalytic role of TBD could be considered as a proton bridge activated by the synergistic action of its N atoms.

We report a B3LYP study of a novel mechanism for propylene epoxidation using H(2) and O(2) on a neutral Au(3) cluster, including full thermodynamics and pre-exponential factors. A side-on O(2) adsorption on Au(3) is followed by dissociative addition of H(2) across one of the Au-O bonds (DeltaE(act) = 2.2 kcal/mol), forming a hydroperoxy intermediate (OOH) and a lone H atom situated on the Au(3) cluster. The more electrophilic O atom (proximal to the Au) of the Au-OOH group attacks the C=C of an approaching propylene to form propylene oxide (PO) with an activation barrier of 19.6 kcal/mol. We predict the PO desorption energy from the Au(3) cluster with residual OH and H to be 11.5 kcal/mol. The catalytic cycle can be closed in two different ways. In the first subpathway, OH and H, hosted by the same terminal Au atom, combine to form water (DeltaE(act) = 26.5 kcal/mol). We attribute rather a high activation barrier of this step to the breaking of the partial bond between the H atom and the central Au atom in the transition state. Upon water desorption (DeltaE(des) = 9.9 kcal/mol), the Au(3) is regenerated (closure). In the second subpathway, H(2) is added across the Au-OH bond to form water and another Au-H bond (DeltaE(act) = 22.6 kcal/mol). Water spontaneously desorbs to form an obtuse angle Au(3) dihydride, with one H atom on the terminal Au atom and the other bridging the same terminal Au atom and the central Au atom. A slightly activated rearrangement to a symmetric triangular Au(3) intermediate with two equivalent Au-H bonds, addition of O(2) into the Au-H bond, and rotation reforms the hydroperoxy intermediate in the main cycle. On the basis of the DeltaG(act), which contains contribution from both pre-exponetial factor and activation energy, we identify the propylene epoxidation step as the actual rate-determining step (RDS) in both the pathways. The activation barrier of the RDS (epoxidation step: DeltaE(act) = 19.6 kcal/mol) is in the same range as that in the published computationally investigated olefin epoxidation mechanisms involving Ti sites (without Au involved) indicating that isolated Au clusters and possibly Au clusters on non-Ti supports can be active for gas-phase partial oxidation, even though cooperative mechanisms involving Au clusters/Ti-based-supports may be favored.

The N(3)(+) reactivity with SO(2), N(2)O, CO(2), and CO is studied by mass spectrometric techniques under a wide range of pressures from 10(-7) to 10(-4) Torr. The kinetics, reaction mechanism, and role of vibrationally excited ions are investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. Key distinguishing features of the N(3) (+) reactivity are evidenced by comparison to N(+) and N(2)(+) ions, which mainly undergo charge-exchange reactions. The N(+) transfer to SO(2) prompts formation of NO(+) ions and neutral oxides NO and SO. The N(+) transfer to N(2)O also leads to NO(+) ions by a process not allowed by spin conservation rules. In both cases no reaction intermediate is detected, whereas CO(2) and CO are captured to form the very stable NCO(2) (+) and NCO(+) ions. NCO(2)(+) ions are characterized for the first time as strongly bound triplet ions of NOCO and ONCO connectivity. DFT and CCSD(T) computations have been carried out to investigate the structural and energetic features of the NCO(2) (+) species and their formation process.

A model of adsorption and recombination of OH radicals was developed for nonreactive solid surfaces of atmospheric interest. A parametrization of this heterogeneous mechanism was carried out to determine the role of the catalytic properties of these solid surfaces, taking into account the adsorption energy, defects, surface diffusion, and chemical reactions in the gas-solid interface. The uptake process was simulated for diffusion-controlled chemical reactions on the surface on the basis of Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms. Using an analytical approach and the Monte Carlo technique, we show the dependencies of the uptake probability of the heterogeneous reactions on the OH concentration and adsorption energy. The model is employed in the analysis of the empirically derived uptake coefficient for water ice, Al(2)O(3), NaCl, NH(4)NO(3), NH(4)HSO(4), and (NH(4))(2)SO(4). We found the following values for the free energy of adsorption of OH radicals: E(ice) = 7.3-7.6 kcal/mol, E(Al)(2)(O)(3) = 11-11.7 kcal/mol, E(NH)(4)(NO)(3) = 10.2 kcal/mol, E(NaCl) = 10.2 kcal/mol, E(NH)(4)(HSO)(4) = 9.8 kcal/mol, and E((NH)(4))(2)(SO)(4) = 9.8 kcal/mol. The atmospheric implications of the catalytic reactions of OH with adsorbed reactive molecules are discussed. The results of the modeling of the uptake process showed that the heterogeneous decay rate can exceed the corresponding gas-phase reaction rate under atmospheric conditions.

The adsorption, vibration, and diffusion of O atoms on Rh(100), Rh(111), Rh(110), and Rh(711) surfaces were studied using the 5-parameter Morse potential (5-MP) of interaction between an adatom and a metal surface cluster. Our theoretical calculations provide information about adsorption sites, adsorption geometry, binding energy, and eigenvibration. Our results agreed very well with experimental results. Four major results follow. First, the theoretical calculation showed that on the Rh(100) surface the 4-fold hollow site is the only adsorption site. Second, on the O-Rh(111) system, the 3-fold hollow site is the stable adsorption site. Third, on the Rh(110) surface at low coverage, the O atom is adsorbed preferably on the pseudo-3-fold site, while with increasing coverage, the O atom is adsorbed not only on the pseudo-3-fold site but also on the long bridge site. Last, as for the Rh(711) stepped surface, the 3-fold site on the (111) step is metastable, whereas the 4-fold sites on the (100) terrace are stable, which enables the O atoms to diffuse easily from the 3-fold to the 4-fold site at low coverage. Therefore, the O atoms are adsorbed preferrably on the stable 4-fold sites of the (100) terrace and then later as coverage increases on the metastable 3-fold site of the (110) step.
