The dynamic elastic H and shear Gdyn moduli of compact bone tissue have been determined by investigating the natural vibration frequency of specimens obtained from long tubular human bones. The modulus of elasticity E has also been determined by conducting mechanical bending tests. A variant of the variable-modulus theory — a generalization of the ideas of the classical theory of elasticity in which the observed difference in the moduli of elasticity in uniaxial tension and compression and homogeneous shear is taken into account — is considered. The effect of the geometry of teflon test pieces on the speed of sound and the logarithmic decrement of longitudinal vibrations has been investigated. Conditions for the determination of the speed of sound in an infinite medium and in a rod have been obtained. Conclusion Shells with angular reinforcement are more sensitive to delamination in the sense of an increase of the coefficient kxz which characterizes the concentration of shear stresses. The principal elastic constants of Nylon 6, Nylon 7, Nylon 6.10, Nylon 11, Nylon 12, PVC, PMMA, polystyrene, and polyvinylfluoride have been calculated from data on the velocity of ultrasonic longitudinal and shear waves measured at a frequency of 5 MHz on the temperature interval 4.2–240°K. It is shown that at cryogenic temperatures the dynamic moduli of elasticity are, to a considerable extent, determined by the characteristics of the chemical structure of the polymers. The elastic, deformation, and strength properties of six different zones of the cross section of the diaphysis of the human tibia have been experimentally investigated. It is shown that when the compact bone tissue is stressed in tension all these properties differ significantly from zone to zone. The greatest values of the initial modulus of elasticity and the tensile strength correspond to the frontal-outer zones of the bone. The nonlinear stress-strain curves are analytically approximated. It has been shown that multicritical phenomena caused by nonlinearity of viscosity and high elasticity, and forced anisotropy at finite shear rates take place during flow of viscoelastic polymer melts which are isotropic in the resting state. The sign of the low-frequency asymptotic values of the dynamic viscosity and elasticity measured during steady flow is a criterion of the appearance of instability. These arguments are illustrated by the solution and analysis of the complex reaction to low-amplitude, periodic shear of a steady-flowing, very simple viscoelastic liquid — ZFD liquid. Experiments to determine the moduli of elasticity of polyamides (kapron) in tension and compression are described. A substantial difference in these characteristics was detected. The modulus of elasticity in tension is 0.75–0.80 of the value of the modulus in compresion. This difference is explained by the textural characteristics of the polyamides. The values of all the lateral strain coefficients of the compact bone tissue of the human tibia have been experimentally determined. The variation of these coefficients in six zones of the cross section have been studied at various stress levels, including the ultimate strengths in the corresponding directions. It has been established that the bone tissue possesses orthotropy of the elastic properties. The change in the volume of the bone tissue during deformation has been studied. The bulk moduli for both uniaxial and hydrostatic loading have been determined. A bulk deformation parameter characterizing the strain energy expended in producing a volume change of 100% is introduced. Conclusions 1. Upon maturation, bone callus not only goes through a series of morphological chantes but also changes in mechanical properties. This is true primarily for an increase in the elasticity modulus.2. The specific energy of dispersion and loss modulus have maxima which occur after 25 to 30 days. This behavior is apparently related to the fact that bone callus at this period has the nature of spongy bone tissue. For compact bone tissue, on the other hand, these values are equal to zero.3. The area of the hysteresis loop is almost completely independent of the frequency upon cyclic stressing.4. The effect of prestressing the reinforcing fibers in either of two mutually perpendicular directions on the elastic characteristics of woven-glass reinforced plastics has been experimentally investigated. It is shown that an increase in the elastic characteristics in the prestress direction is accompanied by a decrease in the direction at right angles. Applying the same prestress in both directions considerably improves the moduli of elasticity (Ex, Ey). The photoelastic properties of chlorostyrene-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymers have been investigated. Studies were made of the elastic characteristics (longitudinal elasticity modulus, elastic recovery) of Arimid PM fibers and of the longitudinal elasticity modulus of the crystal lattice of these samples. The elasticity modulus of the crystallites was determined by x-ray diffraction studies of loaded fibers. It is shown that the studied samples practically instanteneously recover their starting length after removing the load; the sample and its crystal lattice have comparatively low elasticity moduli with nearly identical values.
