The effect of CO2 on the sensitivity of polymeric track detectors was studied. It has been found that the sensitivity of SR-90 is dependent on the amount of CO2 dissolved in the polymer at the time of etching. It has been also found that CR-39 can be sensitized to some extent with an aging in CO2. Since the sensitization in CO2 is possible even a long time after the irradiation, the mechanism of the latent track formation by CO2 is quite different from that by O2. This would be the key to achieve the long term stability of polymeric track detectors such as SR-90 and CR-39.  相似文献

The molecular structure of SR-90 and CR-39 is very similar except that the average length of carbonate linkages in SR-90 is 1.6 times longer than in CR-39. However, the effect of vacuum and carbon dioxide (CO2) on the track registration of these two detectors is very different: 1) the sensitivity of CR-39 becomes very low in vacuum; the sensitivity of SR-90 does not go down to zero even after storage in vacuum for a long time; 2) the sensitivity of SR-90 decreases both in air and in vacuum but the original sensitivity can be restored by storing it in CO2 of 13 atm for several days. We also found that the sensitization of latent tracks by oxygen (O2) is effective only at the time of irradiation but the sensitization by CO2 is effective after irradiation.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of neutron, gamma and alpha radiations on the alpha and fission fragment tracks registration and revelation properties of CR-39 detectors (CR-39 and CR-39(DOP) were studied. It was found that the ratio of the bulk etch rate of irradiated to unirradiated (VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) detectors is linearly dependent on dose. An exponential decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed. The ratio of VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) was found to be high in CR-39 than that in CR-39(DOP) exposed to the same reactor neutron fluence. The decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed to be faster in CR-39 than in CR-39(DOP). This indicates that doping with dioctyl phthalate improves the radiation resistance of CR-39 detectors. It was observed that in detectors exposed to an alpha flux of the order of 9.36 × 106 / cm2, the fission track density was reduced by 11% and thereafter it remained constant. The results also indicate that thermal neutron fluence up to 7.01 ×1011 neutrons/cm2 does not affect the alpha and fission track densities. I.R. spectra were also studied to find out the nature of chemical changes produced by these radiations on CR-39.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the thermal annealing of proton tracks of 4 and 6 MeV at temperatures ranging from 150 to 240°C in CR-39 polymer detectors. A special experimental set-up for irradiating the detectors was arranged to obtain adequate proton beams from the Cyclotron CV-28 at IPEN/SP, Brazil. We report experimental data on track densities, track diameters, and activation energies based on current annealing models for the annealing of proton tracks in the energy range investigated. A value of (0.20±0.02)eV was determined as the mean activation energy of the annealing process in CR-39 detectors.  相似文献

Recently, space radiation dosimetry measurements were made by passive and active detectors inside the Spacelab [STS-47 (FMPT): 300km, 57°, STS-65 (IML-2 mission): 300km, 28.5°]. The LET distributions obtained by antioxidant doped CR-39 inside the Spacelab were compared with those measured by the tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) and the real time radiation monitoring device (RRMD) consisting of eight silicon detectors. While both distributions by CR-39 are in good agreement with those obtained by active detectors over the region of LET of several tens to 200 keV/μm, a significant difference in the LET region of smaller than several tens keV/μm is seen. It is considered to be caused by the dip angle dependence of track formation sensitivity in CR-39. The track formation sensitivity for different dip angle were measured for several high heavy energy ions. Using these results, the correction for the dip angle was made for the LET distribution. The corrected result is consistent with the results obtained by active detectors.  相似文献

The effects of storage temperatures on the track registration of CR-39 as a solid state nuclear track detectors have been investigated. The results show that the storage CR-39 detectors cause partial or complete removal of tracks depending on storaged time and temperatures. The bulk activation energy for CR-39 has been found to be 0.883 eV.  相似文献

Thorium-to-uranium ratios have been determined in different soil samples using CR-39 and LR-115-II solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). A calibration method based on determination of SSNTD registration sensitivity ratio for α-particles of thorium and uranium series has been developed. Thorium and uranium contents of the standard soil samples have been determined and compared with its known values. There is a good agreement between the results of this method and the values of standard samples. The method is simple, inexpensive, non-destructive and has a wide range of applications in environment, building materials and petroleum fields.  相似文献

Etching solutions of different compositions were applied at room temperature (22°C) for electrochemical etching. The background developed during electrochemical etching in a CR-39 track detector was investigated. Detectors irradiated with alphas of 5.49 MeV were measured also. It was found that the PEW solutions (potassiumhydroxid, ethylalcohol, water) showed good sensitivity. One of them (PEW20/40 was applied for neutrons from a 252Cf source. The achieved registration sensitivity was about 10−5 spot/n after 3 hours of etching time.  相似文献

Two techniques have been developed to investigate the characteristic of the sensitivity of CR-39 (polyallyldiglycol carbonate) track detector using Am---Be neutron source. The firstis to measure volume track density created by fast neutrons in CR-39 detectors. The second is to measure areal asymptotic track density on the surface of CR-39 sheets. Two types of CR-39—SY-2 CR-39 made in China and another made in USA were calibrated using the techniques. It shows that the two types of CR-39 detectors have nearly the same sensitivity to detect fast neutrons. The techniques developed in this work can be applied to calibration of other track detectors.  相似文献

Alpha particles can be detected by CR-39 by applying either chemical etching (CE), electrochemical etching (ECE), or combined pre-etching and ECE usually through a multi-step HF-HV ECE process at temperatures much higher than room temperature. By applying pre-etching, characteristics responses of fast-neutron-induced recoil tracks in CR-39 by HF-HV ECE versus KOH normality (N) have shown two high-sensitivity peaks around 5–6 and 15–16 N and a large-diameter peak with a minimum sensitivity around 10–11 N at 25°C. On the other hand, 50 Hz-HV ECE method recently advanced in our laboratory detects alpha particles with high efficiency and broad registration energy range with small ECE tracks in polycarbonate (PC) detectors. By taking advantage of the CR-39 sensitivity to alpha particles, efficacy of 50 Hz-HV ECE method and CR-39 exotic responses under different KOH normalities, detection characteristics of 0.8 MeV alpha particle tracks were studied in 500 μm CR-39 for different fluences, ECE duration and KOH normality. Alpha registration efficiency increased as ECE duration increased to 90 ± 2% after 6–8 h beyond which plateaus are reached. Alpha track density versus fluence is linear up to 106 tracks cm−2. The efficiency and mean track diameter versus alpha fluence up to 106 alphas cm−2 decrease as the fluence increases. Background track density and minimum detection limit are linear functions of ECE duration and increase as normality increases. The CR-39 processed for the first time in this study by 50 Hz-HV ECE method proved to provide a simple, efficient and practical alpha detection method at room temperature.  相似文献

Two types of polymeric track detectors CR-39 and SR-90 were irradiated with protons, alpha particles, heavy ions and gamma-rays at different energies and fluences. After irradiation these detectors were analyzed with an FT-IR spectrometer of Jasco type 5300 in transmission and ATR modes. We have found that CO2 is produced not only by irradiation but also by polymerization. The amount of CO2 in the detector material is closely related to the latent track formation.  相似文献

It is well established that the bulk etch rates for solid state nuclear track detectors are affected by the concentration and the temperature of the etchant. Recently, we found that the bulk etch rate for the LR 115 detector to be affected by stirring during etching. In the present work, the effects of stirring on the bulk etch rate of the CR-39 detector is investigated. One set of sample was etched under continuous stirring by a magnetic stirrer at 70°C in a 6.25 N NaOH solution, while the other set of samples was etched without the magnetic stirrer. After etching, the bulk etch thickness was measured using Form Talysurf PGI (Taylor Hobson, Leicester, England). It was found that magnetic stirring did not affect the bulk etch of the CR-39 detector, which was in contrast to the results for the LR 115 detector.  相似文献

Using CR-39 plastic track detectors the range values of 16O ions at two different energies (initially in the beam line, 39.97 MeV/n and 69.98 MeV/n) were measured after escaping the beam pipe and found to be (3050 ± 40) μm and (8210 ± 90) μm, respectively. The longitudinal and projected angular spread of oxygen ions of an initial energy of 69.98 MeV/n in the region of the Bragg peak was derived from the measured geometrical parameters of tracks. Based on a calibration curve (etch rate ratio vs total linear energy transfer in CR-39) and the measured track length distribution at the range end of oxygen ions, the complete depth dose profile of a 67.7 MeV/n 16O beam in CR-39 (plateau, extended Bragg peak and residual ionization caused by projectile like fragments) was obtained.  相似文献

Heating experiments were conducted on CR-39 polymer/plastic detector samples at temperatures between 50 and 175 °C for various time intervals from 5 to 210 min to investigate the thermal behavior of detector material. Mass and thickness of un-heated and heated polymer samples were measured. Three distinct regimes have been observed showing different degrees of changes in thickness and mass of annealed samples. The percent change of thickness was considerably higher than the mass change during heating. Thermodynamic concepts are used to explain the experimentally observed heating regimes. Role of the difference between free energies of lateral and fold surfaces in detector thickening during heating is discussed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out on un-heated and heated CR-39 samples to examine the surface alterations due to heating. Results are useful for researchers who employ track detectors for radiation measurements in nuclear reactors and cosmic rays. They are also interesting for researchers in related fields, like fission track dating, which consider the thermal history of track recording materials. Our quantitative data and SEM imaging suggests that structural changes, especially surface changes in CR-39 polymer are very important and need to be explored carefully through joint SEM and the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).  相似文献

As a frame work of the study for the latent track size measurement using atomic force microscope, we have measured the minute etch pits and the extremely small amount of bulk etch of CR-39 at the beginning of chemical etching, and obtained its growth curves in nanometer dimensions. The pieces of CR-39 were exposed to 6 MeV/nC and Fe ions with normal incidence angle and were etched in 70°C 7 N NaOH solution for 0.5,1,2,3,5 min. The diameters of latent track were estimated to be 17 nm for Fe ions and 8 nm for C ions, respectively. These values are comparable to the experimental data on the average ‘track core diameters’ that have been obtained by various experimental techniques.  相似文献

High LET (linear energy transfer) radiation is the main contributor to the radiation field in low Earth orbit (LEO) in terms of dose equivalent. CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTDs) can measure the LET spectrum and charge spectrum for the complicated radiation field in space. Previous research indicated that the sensitivity of CR-39 is different for CR-39 PNTDs working in different oxygen environments. LET calibration for CR-39 detectors in different oxygen environments is needed. Almost all the previous LET calibration work was carried out for CR-39 detectors in good-oxygen condition, LET calibration work for CR-39 in poor-oxygen condition has not been conducted until our work. Systematic LET calibrations were carried out by JSC-SRAG (Space Radiation Analysis Group) for CR-39 detectors working in different oxygen environments and abundant results of LET calibrations were obtained. This paper introduces the method for CR-39 LET calibration, presents and discusses the calibration results and some applications.  相似文献

Long chain polymers owe many of their properties to the structural arrangements of their molecules and are extensively used for many industrial and applied sciences. One of such application is their perspective use in the field of solid-state nuclear track detectors. However they are profoundly influenced by low LET radiations exposure and new structural arrangements may emerge. CR-39 is one of the most popular polymeric track detectors, however its aliphatic nature restricts its applications. Thus in the present investigations the damage densities produced by solar radiations to the polymer have been estimated by analyzing the structural, physical and etching properties of the polymer. The polymer is found to be highly sensitive towards solar radiations and great changes in physical and structural properties of polymer have been observed. The sensitivity of the polymer has been found to decrease by 83.40% during eight months.   相似文献

Space radiation dosimetry measurements have been made on board the Space Shuttle STS-65 in the Second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2). In these measurements, three kinds of detectors were used; one is a newly developed active detector telescope called “Real-time Radiation Monitoring Device (RRMD)” utilizing silicon semi-conductor detectors and others are conventional detectors of thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) and CR-39 plastic track detectors. Using the RRMD detector, the first attempt of real-time monitoring of space radiation has been achieved successfully for a continuous period of 251.3 h, giving the temporal variations of LET distribution, particle count rates, and rates of absorbed dose and dose equivalent. The RRMD results indicate that a clear enhancement of the number of trapped particles is seen at the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) without clear enhancement of dose equivalent, while some daily periodic enhancements of dose equivalent due to high LET particles are seen at the lower geomagnetic cutoff regions for galactic cosmic ray particles (GCRs). Therefore, the main contribution to dose equivalent is seen to be due to GCRs in this low altitude mission (300 km). Also, the dose equivalent rates obtained by TLDs and CR-39 ranged from 146.9 to 165.2 μSv/day and the average quality factors from 1.45 to 1.57 depending on the locations and directions of detectors inside the Space-lab at this highly protected orbit for space radiation with a small inclination (28.5°) and a low altitude (300 km). The LET distributions obtained by two different detectors, RRMD and CR-39, are in good agreement in the region of 15–200 keV/mm and difference of these distributions in the regions of LET < 15 keV/mm and LET > 200 keV/mm can be explained by considering characteristics of CR-39 etched track formation especially for the low LET tracks.  相似文献

A comparative study of the effect of gamma and laser irradiation on the thermal, optical and structural properties of the CR-39 diglycol carbonate solid state nuclear track detector has been carried out. Samples from CR-39 polymer were classified into two main groups: the first group was irradiated by gamma rays with doses at levels between 20 and 300 kGy, whereas the second group was exposed to infrared laser radiation with energy fluences at levels between 0.71 and 8.53 J/cm2. Non-isothermal studies were carried out using thermogravimetry, differential thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis to obtain activation energy of decomposition and transition temperatures for the non-irradiated and all irradiated CR-39 samples. In addition, optical and structural property studies were performed on non-irradiated and irradiated CR-39 samples using refractive index and X-ray diffraction measurements. Variation in the onset temperature of decomposition T o, activation energy of decomposition E a, melting temperature T m, refractive index n and the mass fraction of the amorphous phase after gamma and laser irradiation were studied.

It was found that many changes in the thermal, optical and structural properties of the CR-39 polymer could be produced by gamma irradiation via degradation and cross-linking mechanisms. Also, the gamma dose has an advantage of increasing the correlation between thermal stability of the CR-39 polymer and bond formation created by the ionizing effect of gamma radiation. On the other hand, higher laser-energy fluences in the range 4.27–8.53 J/cm2 decrease the melting temperature of the CR-39 polymer and this is most suitable for applications requiring molding of the polymer at lower temperatures.  相似文献
