It is shown how to construct effective lagrangians to the two-loop level for non-abelian gauge theories, quantized in background field gauge. This construction is no more difficult than the analogous computation in abelian gauge theories when minimal subtraction is employed. It is argued that for three or more loops, one can no longer separate heavy or mixed light-heavy graphs in an intermediate renormalization, and the more general algorithm presented by us in an earlier work must be employed even in background field gauge.  相似文献

A new theory of spacetime is proposed in which translations are considered as a part of the de Sitter gauge group. The theory is built along the general principles of classical gauge field theories, which are outlined. Applications of gauge principles to linear and affine connections are also given in order to make the presentation self-sufficient. A de Sitter invariant Lagrangian is constructed, which yields approximately Einstein's vacuum equations when it is subjected to variation with respect to gauge potentials and the result expressed in a specific gauge class. As a difference from the usual use of de Sitter groups, the radius of its translations must be small in the present approach, which probably has the meaning of an elementary subatomic length. The solution of the equations describing flat spacetime is not the trivial zero-curvature connection of the conventional approach.  相似文献

The nonlocal gauge group of unitary integral operators U n (∞) is considered. Gluons in the nonlocal version of QCD are described by the bilocal gauge fields (BGF). The Higgs effect for BGF are discussed. It is shown that the local SU(n) gauge theory can be treated as a local limit of spontaneously broken U n(∞)/SU(n) BGF theory.  相似文献

It is shown that a topological action for gravity in even dimensions can be obtained from a gravity theory whose Lagrangian is given by a transgression form invariant under the Poincaré group.  相似文献

We construct in detail a 2+1 dimensional gauge field theory with finite gauge group. In this case the path integral reduces to a finite sum, so there are no analytic problems with the quantization. The theory was originally introduced by Dijkgraaf and Witten without details. The point of working it out carefully is to focus on the algebraic structure, and particularly the construction of quantum Hilbert spaces on closed surfaces by cutting and pasting. This includes the Verlinde formula. The careful development may serve as a model for dealing with similar issues in more complicated cases. The first author is supported by NSF grant DMS-8805684, an Alfred P. Recent theoretical and numerical developments show analogies between quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and disordered systems in condensed matter physics. We study the spectral fluctuations of a Dirac particle propagating in a finite four-dimensional box in the presence of gauge fields. We construct a model which combines Efetov's approach to disordered systems with the principles of chiral symmetry and QCD. To this end, the gauge fields are replaced with a stochastic white-noise potential, the gauge field disorder. Effective supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models are obtained. Spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry is found. We rigorously derive the equivalent of the Thouless energy within our generic model implying the universality of this scale in QCD. Connections to other low energy effective theories, in particular, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and chiral perturbation theory, are found.  相似文献

Torsion in Kaluza-Klein theory is considered. It is shown that a part of the components of the torsion tensor can be identified with the components of gauge fields different from the gauge fields of the Kaluza-Klein theory, while the other part can be identified with the field strength tensor of these gauge fields. The gauge fields introduced this way acquire a geometrically induced mass. It is shown that the torsion in the internal space allows to generate any a priori given mass in Kaluza-Klein theory.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 6, pp. 11–15, June, 1988.In conclusion, I want to thank Yu. We specialize the gauge-fixing procedure for the Witten action of the open bosonic string, given in a preceding paper, choosing the Siegel gauge. We find that the BRST-invariant gauge-fixed action is the gauge invariant one with ghost number unrestricted plus a gauge-fixing term. The BRST invariance of the measure in the functional integral is briefly discussed. As a technical tool the Hodge dual of a string functional is defined.  相似文献

We study the thermodynamic behaviour of spin and gauge systems in the presence of a quenched external random field. In particular, we show that forZ(2) andSU (2) gauge theory in two space dimensions, the random field destroys the ordered phase and thus leads to a shift in the lower critical dimension, just as found for the corresponding Ising model.  相似文献

We point out that a QCD axion solving the strong CP problem can arise naturally from a parity-odd gauge field in five-dimensional (5D) orbifold field theory. The required axion coupling to the QCD anomaly comes from the 5D Chern-Simons coupling, and all other unwanted U(1)PQ breaking axion couplings can be avoided naturally by the 5D gauge symmetry and locality. If the fifth dimension is warped, the resulting axion scale is suppressed by a small warp factor compared to the Planck scale, thereby the model can generate naturally an intermediate axion scale fa = 10(10)-10(12) GeV.  相似文献

Two distinct attempts at constructing a theory of non-abelian antisymmetric tensor gauge fields (ATGF's) are considered. First, a recently proposed geometry of abelian ATGF's is reviewed and then generalized to the non-abelian case. The resulting geometric action is non-local and is invariant under non-local gauge transformations; in the local limit the action describes free fields. Lattice actions for both the abelian and non-abelian ATGF theories are also presented. In the second approach, a lattice action for non-abelian ATGF's is constructed using a plaquette variables that carry four internal indices. The continuum limit is also a non-interacting theory.  相似文献

The dimensional reduction of pure multi-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is studied. It is shown that this reduction leads to four-dimensional lagrangians describing Yang-Mills fields interacting with Higgs fields.  相似文献
