This article reports the measurements of time-resolved heat transfer rate and time-resolved static pressure that have been made on the over-tip casing of a transonic axial-flow turbine operating at flow conditions that are representative of those found in modern gas turbine engines. This data is discussed and analysed in the context of explaining the physical mechanisms that influence the casing heat flux. The physical size of the measurement domain was one nozzle guide vane-pitch and from −20% to +80% rotor axial chord. Additionally, measurements of the time-resolved adiabatic wall temperature are presented. The time-mean data from the same set of experiments is presented and discussed in Part I of this article. The nozzle guide vane exit flow conditions in these experiments were a Mach number of 0.93 and a Reynolds number of 2.7 × 106 based on nozzle guide vane mid-height axial chord. The data reveal large temporal variations in heat transfer characteristics to the casing wall that are associated with blade-tip passing events and in particular the blade over-tip leakage flow. The highest instantaneous heat flux to the casing wall occurs within the blade-tip gap, and this has been found to be caused by a combination of increasing flow temperature and heat transfer coefficient. The time-resolved static pressure measurements have enabled a detailed understanding of the tip-leakage aerodynamics to be established, and the physical mechanisms influencing the casing heat load have been determined. In particular, this has focused on the role of the unsteady blade lift distribution that is produced by upstream vane effects. This has been seen to modulate the tip-leakage flow and cause subsequent variations in casing heat flux. The novel experimental techniques employed in these experiments have allowed the measurement of the time-resolved adiabatic wall temperature on the casing wall. These data clearly show the falling flow temperatures as work is extracted from the gas by the turbine. Additionally, these temperature measurements have revealed that the absolute stagnation temperature within the tip-gap flow can be above the turbine inlet total temperature, and indicates the presence of a work process that leads to high adiabatic wall temperatures as a blade-tip passes a point on the casing wall. It is shown that this phenomena can be explained by consideration of the flow vectors within the tip-gap, and that these in turn are related to the local blade loading distribution. The paper also assesses the relative importance of different time-varying phenomena to the casing heat load distribution. This analysis has indicated that up to half of the casing heat load is associated with the over-tip leakage flow. Finally, the implications of the experimental findings are discussed in relation to future shroudless turbine design, and in particular the importance of accounting for the high heat fluxes found within the tip-gap.  相似文献

The influence of Coriolis force on heat transfer in a rotating transitional boundary layer has been experimentally investigated. The experiments have been conducted for local Görtler numbers up to 150. Heat transfer measurements have been performed for a flat plate with nearly uniform heat flux applied to the surface, where the temperature was measured by the thermochromic liquid crystal method. The results indicate that heat transfer is enhanced when Coriolis force acts towards the wall, i.e., on the pressure surface. The velocity measurements under equivalent conditions show that Coriolis instability induces counter-rotating longitudinal vortices which augment the lateral transport of the fluid on the pressure surface. On the other hand, the heat transfer on the suction surface remains at the same level as compared to the case without system rotation. As a consequence, the heat transfer coefficient on the pressure surface is 1.8 times higher than that measured on the suction surface when averaged over the measured surface.  相似文献

Heat transfer is significant in turbochargers and a number of mathematical models have been proposed to account for the heat transfer, however these have predominantly been validated under steady flow conditions. A variable geometry turbocharger from a 2.2 L Diesel engine was studied, both on gas stand and on-engine, under steady and transient conditions. The results showed that heat transfer accounts for at least 20% of total enthalpy change in the turbine and significantly more at lower mechanical powers. A convective heat transfer correlation was derived from experimental measurements to account for heat transfer between the gases and the turbine housing and proved consistent with those published from other researchers. This relationship was subsequently shown to be consistent between engine and gas stand operation: using this correlation in a 1D gas dynamics simulation reduced the turbine outlet temperature error from 33 °C to 3 °C. Using the model under transient conditions highlighted the effect of housing thermal inertia. The peak transient heat flow was strongly linked to the dynamics of the turbine inlet temperature: for all increases, the peak heat flow was higher than under thermally stable conditions due to colder housing. For all decreases in gas temperature, the peak heat flow was lower and for temperature drops of more than 100 °C the heat flow was reversed during the transient.  相似文献

Enhanced convection, transient conduction, microlayer evaporation, and contact line heat transfer have all been proposed as mechanisms by which bubbles transfer energy during boiling. Models based on these mechanisms contain fitting parameters that are used to fit them to the data, resulting a proliferation of “validated” models. A review of the recent experimental, analytical, and numerical work into single bubble heat transfer is presented to determine the contribution of each of the above mechanisms to the overall heat transfer. Transient conduction and microconvection are found to be the dominant heat transfer mechanisms. Heat transfer through the microlayer and at the three-phase contact line do not contribute more than about 25% of the overall heat transfer.  相似文献

Pool boiling heat transfer has been investigated for various binary mixtures, including acetone/isopropanol, water/acetone, water/methanol, water/ethanol, water/isopropanol, water/monoethanolamine, water/diethanolamine and water/triethyleneglycol as test solutions. Many correlations have been developed to predict the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient in mixtures in the past few decades, however the predicted values are not confirming. In addition, the application of many existing correlations requires some individual adjusting parameters that may be not available for every system. In this investigation, a new set of experimental data are presented. These data have been compared to major existing correlations. It is observed that the pool boiling heat transfer coefficients in mixtures are less than the ideal boiling heat transfer coefficient. A new semi-empirical model has been proposed based on the mass transfer resistance to predict the boiling heat transfer coefficient with satisfactory accuracy. The new model does not include any tuning parameter and is applicable to any given binary system. The performance of the proposed model is superior to most existing correlations.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to obtain surface flow visualisation, as well as local and spanwise averaged heat transfer measurements near a 180° sharp turn in a rectangular channel. The channel aspect ratio (width to height ratio) varies from 1 to 5 and the ratio between the width of the channel and that of the partition wall is always equal to 5. Heat transfer measurements are performed by means of the heated-thin-foil technique, which practically corresponds to a constant heat flux boundary condition, and by using infrared (IR) thermography. Two different heating conditions, in particular heating from one side (asymmetrical), or from two sides (symmetrical), are implemented. The convective heat transfer coefficient is evaluated from the measured temperature maps and the local bulk temperature of the flow which is obtained by making a one-dimensional balance along the channel. Results are presented in terms of local, or averaged, Nusselt number which is normalised with the classical Dittus and Boelter correlation. The fluid used during the test is air and the Reynolds number, based on the flow average velocity and channel hydraulic diameter, is varied between 16,000 and 60,000.  相似文献

In order to understand the dynamics of vortices on heat transfer, the unsteady flow field of tangential direction jets flowing in the annular chamber is numerically investigated by scale-adaptive simulation (SAS). The jet Reynolds number is 332,000 based on the jet’s diameter and inflow velocity for a specific geometric model. The analogy theory is used to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient distribution on the hub surface. Spectral analysis via fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to analyze frequency information that flows inside the chamber. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is performed on the velocity field in the chamber and the convective heat transfer coefficient on the hub surface using a snapshot method. The fast Fourier transform helps find the dominant frequency of the unsteady flow in the chamber. The time sequence of velocity fields on the radial plane shows the presence of cyclic flapping of the jet. The proper orthogonal decomposition analysis indicates that the unsteady periodic flow phenomenon in the chamber and unsteady heat transfer on the hub surface are mainly related to the dynamics of the counter-rotating vortices caused by the jet.  相似文献

Injection of sub-millimeter bubbles is considered a promising technique for enhancing natural convection heat transfer for liquids. So far, we have experimentally investigated heat transfer characteristics of laminar natural convection flows with sub-millimeter bubbles. However, the effects of the bubble size on the heat transfer have not yet been understood. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of the bubble size on the heat transfer enhancement for the laminar natural convection of water along a vertical heated plate with uniform heat flux. Temperature and velocity measurements, in which thermocouples and a particle tracking velocimetry technique are, respectively used, are conducted to investigate heat transfer and flow characteristics for different bubble sizes. Moreover, two-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to comprehensively understand the effects of bubble injection on the flow near the heated plate. The result shows that the ratio of the heat transfer coefficient with sub-millimeter-bubble injection to that without injection ranges from 1.3 to 2.2. The result also shows that for a constant bubble flow rate, the heat transfer coefficient ratio increases with a decrease in the mean bubble diameter. It is expected from our estimation based on both experimental data and simulation results that this increase results from an increase in the advection effect due to bubbles.  相似文献

Microstructure heat exchangers have unique properties that make them useful for numerous scientific and industrial applications. The power transferred per unit volume is mainly a function of the distance between heat source and heat sink—the smaller this distance, the better the heat transfer. Another parameter governing for the heat transfer is the lateral characteristic dimension of the heat transfer structure; in the case of microchannels, this is the hydraulic diameter. Decreasing this characteristic dimension into the range of several 10s of micrometers leads to very high values for the heat transfer rate.

Another possible way of increasing the heat transfer rate of a heat exchanger is changing the flow regime. Microchannel devices usually operate within the laminar flow regime. By changing from microchannels to three dimensional structures, or to planar geometries with microcolumn arrays, a significant increase of the heat transfer rate can be achieved.

Microheat exchangers in the form of both microchannel devices (with different hydraulic diameters) and microcolumn array devices (with different microcolumn layouts) are presented and compared. Electrically heated microchannel devices are presented, and industrial applications are briefly described.  相似文献

A numerical study has been performed for the periodically fully-developed flow in two-dimensional channels with streamwise-periodic round disturbances on its two walls. To accurately describe the round disturbance boundary condition, a body fitted grid was used. The flow and heat transfer have been studied in the range of Reynolds number, Re=50–700, and Prandtl number Pr=0.71. The influences of disturbance parameters and Reynolds number on heat transfer and friction have been investigated in detail. Some of the solutions have been examined using both steady and unsteady finite difference schemes; and the same results have been obtained. The results show that different flow patterns can occur with different deployments of the disturbances. With appropriate configuration of the disturbances, the Nusselt number can reach a value four times greater than in a smooth channel at the same condition, with the penalty of a much greater pressure drop. On the other hand, if the disturbances are not deployed properly, augmentation of heat transfer cannot be acquired. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article is the second part of a study on flow boiling of R236fa and R245fa. This part presents the heat transfer coefficients obtained in a 12.7 mm silicon evaporator composed of 135 microchannels with 85 μm wide and 560 μm high channels separated by 46 μm wide fins. There were 35 local heaters and temperature measurements arranged in a 5 × 7 array. The heat transfer results were uniform in the lateral direction to the flow (attributable to the inlet restriction) and a function of the heat flux, vapor quality and mass flux. The steady-state standard deviation of the local base temperature was less than 0.2 °C, inferring that the boiling process was very stable. For wall heat fluxes over 45 kW/m2, the heat transfer coefficient curves were V-shaped, decreasing for intermittent flow regimes and increasing for annular flow. The three-zone model of Thome et al. (2004) was the best heat transfer prediction method when setting the dryout thickness equal to the channel roughness.  相似文献

The over-tip casing of the high-pressure turbine in a modern gas turbine engine is subjected to strong convective heat transfer that can lead to thermally induced failure (burnout) of this component. However, the complicated flow physics in this region is dominated by the close proximity of the moving turbine blades, which gives rise to significant temporal variations at the blade-passing frequency. The understanding of the physical processes that control the casing metal temperature is still limited and this fact has significant implications for the turbine design strategy. A series of experiments has been performed that seeks to address some of these important issues. This article reports the measurements of time-mean heat transfer and time-mean static pressure that have been made on the over-tip casing of a transonic axial-flow turbine operating at flow conditions that are representative of those found in modern gas turbine engines. Time-resolved measurements of these flow variables (that reveal the details of the blade-tip/casing interaction physics) are presented in a companion paper. The nozzle guide vane exit flow conditions in these experiments were a Mach number of 0.93 and a Reynolds number of 2.7 × 106 based on nozzle guide vane mid-height axial chord. The axial and circumferential distributions of heat transfer rate, adiabatic wall temperature, Nusselt number and static pressure are presented. The data reveal large axial variations in the wall heat flux and adiabatic wall temperature that are shown to be primarily associated with the reduction in flow stagnation temperature through the blade row. The heat flux falls by a factor of 6 (from 120 to 20 kW/m2). In contrast, the Nusselt number falls by just 36% between the rotor inlet plane and 80% rotor axial chord; additionally, this drop is near to linear from 20% to 80% rotor axial chord. The circumferential variations in heat transfer rate are small, implying that the nozzle guide vanes do not produce a strong variation in casing boundary layer properties in the region measured. The casing static pressure measurements follow trends that can be expected from the blade loading distribution, with maximum values immediately upstream of the rotor inlet plane, and then a decreasing trend with axial position as the flow is turned and accelerated in the relative frame of reference. The time-mean static pressure measurements on the casing wall also reveal distinct circumferential variations that are small in comparison to the large pressure gradient in the axial direction.  相似文献

The flow around a gas bubble forming at a submerged orifice without vaporisation is analysed both with and without heat transfer taking place from the bubble surface. The results of experiments are given in which high-speed photography was used to study air bubbling through four different sizes of orifice into water, for the isothermal and diabatic case. A numerical solution of the dimensionless equations using Hamming's modified predictor-corrector method gave excellent agreement with experimental measurements of the bubble volume-time history for both stages of growth as well as predicting accurately the transition point between the two stages. Most of the heat transfer was found to occur almost immediately after the start of bubble growth  相似文献

A mixed Lagrangian/Eulerian ‘time-marching’ solver capable of predicting one-dimensional nucleating steam flows is described. Simple nucleation and droplet growth models are employed which avoid the use of variable empirical factors and which have been validated using existing experimental data from nozzle experiments performed in the steam tunnel of the Central Electricity Research Laboratories. Theoretical predictions are compared against experimental results encompassing all flow regimes likely to be encountered in a one-dimensional analysis of flow in a low pressure steam turbine. These include supercritical heat addition cases which display both steady and unsteady shock wave formation.  相似文献

The problem of three dimensional unsteady convection flow through a porous medium, with effect of mass transfer bounded by an infinite vertical porous plate is discussed, when the suction at the plate is transverse sinusoidal and the plate temperature oscillates in time about a constant mean. Assuming the free stream velocity to be uniform, approximate solutions are obtained for the flow field, the temperature field, the skin-friction and the rate of heat transfer. The dependence of solution on Pr (Prandtl number), Gr (Grashof number based on temperature), Gc (modified Grashof number based on concentration difference), Sc (Schimdt number), the frequency and the permeability parameter is also investigated.  相似文献

Free convection phenomenon has been experimentally investigated around a horizontal rod heater in carbonic acid solution. Because of the tendency of the solution to desorb carbon dioxide gas when temperature is increased, bubbles appear when cylinder surface is heated. The bubbles consists mainly carbon dioxide and also a negligible amount of water vapor. The results present that dissolved carbon dioxide in water significantly enhances the heat transfer coefficient in compare to pure free convection regime. This is mainly due to the microscale mixing on the heat transfer surface, which is induced by bubble formation. In this investigation, experiments are performed at different bulk temperatures between 288 and 333 K and heat fluxes up to 400 kW m−2 at atmospheric pressure. Bubble departure diameter, nucleation site density and heat transfer coefficient have been experimentally measured. A model has been proposed to predict the heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

This paper aims to determine the heat transfer enhancement in natural convection between a downward-facing inclined wall, heated by Joule effect, and air in the presence of small air pulsating expired jets, in conditions of medium temperature difference between wall and air, namely 40 K. Experimental measurements have been taken both with and without pulsating expired jets. The wall is kept in condition of uniform temperature. The expired jets blow out perpendicularly from the wall surface. An infrared thermo-camera was used to check the wall temperature uniformity. Hot-wire anemometer and visualization with smoke were used to find information on the air velocity field. The wall inclination angle which maximizes the convective heat exchange near the leading edge has been investigated too.  相似文献

Algorithm of retrieving the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) from transient temperature measurements is presented. The unknown distributions of two types of boundary conditions: the temperature and heat flux are parameterized using a small number of user defined functions. The solutions of the direct heat conduction problems with known boundary temperature and flux are expressed as a superposition of auxiliary temperature fields multiplied by unknown parameters. Inverse problem is formulated as a least squares fit of calculated and measured temperatures and is cast in a form of a sum of two objective functions. The first results originates from an inverse problem for retrieving the boundary temperature the second comes from the inverse problem for reproducing the boundary heat flux. The final form of the objective function is obtained by enforcing constant in time value of the heat transfer coefficient. This approach leads to substantial regularization of the results, when compared with the standard technique, where HTC is calculated from separately reconstructed temperature and heat flux on the boundary. The validation of the numerical procedure is carried out by reconstructing a known distribution of the HTC using simulated measurements laden by stochastic error. The proposed approach is also used to reconstruct the distribution of the HTC in a physical experiment of heating a cylindrical sample using an impinging jet.  相似文献
