This paper reports on the preparation and characterization of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK)-based mixed matrix membranes. The inorganic matrix consisted of silica: Aerosil®380, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or a combination of both to obtain an interconnected silica network. The behavior of these membranes in ethanol–water systems was studied for application in a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). Uptake measurements showed that the converted TEOS content had a strong influence on the hydrophilicity of the membranes. Proton conductivity was strongly related to the water content in the membrane, but the proton diffusion coefficients of membranes with various Aerosil®380–TEOS combinations were similar. Dynamic measurements in liquid–liquid (L–L) and liquid–gas (L–G) systems were performed to study the ethanol transport through the membrane. No reduction in ethanol permeability was obtained in the L–L system, but a remarkable reduction was obtained in the L–G system when 2 M ethanol was applied. The reinforcing characteristic of the combined Aerosil®380–TEOS-system were best observed at 40 °C with 4 M ethanol. The fuel cell performance prediction based on the selectivity of proton diffusion coefficient to ethanol permeability coefficient showed for nearly all composite membranes an improvement with respect to the polymeric reference. The presence of an inorganic phase led to relatively constant proton diffusion coefficients and lower ethanol permeability coefficients in comparison with the polymeric reference.  相似文献

A series of fluorenyl-containing sulfonated poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone)s (SPFEEKK) were synthesized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution polymerization. The sulfonation content (SC) was controlled by the feed ratios of sulfonated and nonsulfonated monomers. Flexible and strong membranes in the sulfonic acid form were obtained from cast membranes in the sodium salt forms by treatment with acid. The thermal properties, water uptake, swelling ratio, water state, oxidative stability, proton conductivity and methanol permeability were investigated. All the polymers had proton conductivities greater than 1 × 10−2 S/cm at room temperature, and the conductivity values of m-SPFEEKK-80 and p-SPFEEKK-80 were up to 1.86 × 10−1 and 1.78 × 10−1 S/cm at 100 °C. This series of polymers also possessed good dimensional stability in water and low methanol crossover.  相似文献

Novel covalently crosslinked membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and carboxylated polysulfone exhibit much lower methanol crossover and better performance in direct methanol fuel cells at 65 °C in 1 and 2 M methanol solutions compared to Nafion 115 membranes.  相似文献

Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEK)s were synthesized by the modification of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (PPEK) with 98% concentrated sulfuric acid or 98% concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic acid mixture at 80–100°C. The presence of sulfonic acid groups in SPPEKs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the DSs were determined by Energy Dispersive X‐Ray (EDX). A blend membrane of No. 21 SPPEK and phosphotungstic acid (PWA) was prepared. The methanol permeabilities of SPPEK and blend membranes were about 20 times lower than that of Nafion117 at room temperature. The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) test of 2 M methanol solution and air breathing showed that the blend membrane had a better performance than that of the Nafion117. The synthesis and characterization of new di‐ and tetra‐sulfonated ether diketone monomers are described. From these monomers, a wide series of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)s (SPAEK) are synthesized by varying the sulfonic acid repartition along the polymer backbones. Their chemical structures are thoroughly characterized by NMR. From these polymers tough membranes are obtained from solution casting method and their water uptake, ionic conductivity, and water/gas permeation properties are determined and compared with those of Nafion membrane. Preliminary fuel cell tests show that SPAEK membranes are promising candidates for fuel cell application. This work brings new insights concerning the beneficial effects of introducing densely sulfonated monomers in a polyarylether macromolecular structure along with fluorinated groups improving conductivity while reducing unwanted excessive swelling. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ether ketone ketone) was sulfonated using fumic sulfuric acid and used for preparation of proton conductive membranes. The sulfonation degree was evaluated by elemental and thermal analysis and the IEC values were determined by titration. The proton conductivity of membranes with sulfonation degrees up to 70% was determined as a function of temperature by impedance spectroscopy. Membranes with sulfonation degree 38–70% were tested in DMFC experiments. Their performance was comparable to Nafion® with the same pretreatment and clearly better than sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes with similar functionalization. The methanol crossover was lower than that of Nafion® in the same conditions.  相似文献

The sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone sulfone) (SPEEKS)/heteropolyacid (HPA) composite membranes with different HPA content in SPEEKS copolymers matrix with different degree of sulfonation (DS) were investigated for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR band shifts suggested that the sulfonic acid groups on the copolymer backbone strongly interact with HPA particles. SEM pictures showed that the HPA particles were uniformly distributed throughout the SPEEKS membranes matrix and particle sizes decreased with the increment of copolymers' DS. The holes were not found in SPEEKS‐4/HPA30 (consisting of 70% SPEEKS copolymers with DS = 0.8 and 30% HPA) composite membrane after composite membranes were treated with boiling water for 24 h. Thermal stabilities of the composite membranes were better than those of pure sulfonated copolymers membranes. Although the composite membranes possessed lower water uptake, it exhibited higher proton conductivity for SPEEKS‐4/HPA30 especially at high temperature (above 100 °C). Its proton conductivity linearly increased from 0.068 S/cm at 25 °C to 0.095 S/cm at 120 °C, which was higher than 0.06 S/cm of Nafion 117. In contrast, proton conductivity of pure SPEEKS‐4 membrane only increased from 0.062 S/cm at 25 °C to 0.078 S/cm at 80 °C. At 120 °C, proton conductivity decreased to poor 0.073 S/cm. The result indicated that composite membranes exhibited high proton conductivity at high temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1967–1978, 2006  相似文献

The crystal structure of poly(aryl ether biphenyl ether ketone ketone) (PEDEKK) was determined to comprise a two-chain orthorhombic unit cell with dimensions a = 0.778 nm, b = 0.606 nm and c = 2.375 nm by using wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). According to the orthorhombic system, the 12 reflections of this polymer were indexed. The crystallite size increases with increasing the crystallization temperature. The results of the degree of crystallinity (Wc,x) calculated from WAXD were compatible with those from density (Wc,d) and calorimetry (Wc,h) measurements.  相似文献

Polymer blends based on sulfonated poly(ether ketone ketone) (SPEKK) as the proton-conducting component and poly(ether imide) (PEI) as the second component were considered for proton-exchange membranes (PEMs). The PEI was added to improve the mechanical stability and lower the water swelling in the fuel cell environment. Membranes were cast from solution using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The ternary, polymer/polymer/solvent, phase diagram was determined to provide guidance on how to control the morphology during solvent casting of blend membranes.

For blends of SPEKK (ion-exchange capacity = 2 mequiv/g) with PEI as the minority component, the morphology consisted of dispersed particles of 0.5–6 μm. Larger particles were achieved by increasing the PEI content and/or lowering the casting temperature. High-temperature annealing after solution casting did not affect the morphology of blend membranes, due to the low mobility and compatibility of the two polymers.

The possible use of SPEKK/PEI blends in PEMs is discussed in terms of existing theories of ion transport in polymers.  相似文献

Polymer blends of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) were prepared by solution casting. The investigation on water uptake, methanol uptake, permeability and proton conductivity has been conducted. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame of PES/SPEEK blend was obtained from the results of cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) solid state 13C NMR. SPEEK blended with PES resulted in increasing , indicating the molecular motion of polymer chain was reduced. The glass transition temperature of the PES/SPEEK blend membranes were predicted by the Kwei equation. PES plays an important role in the decreasing water uptake, methanol uptake and methanol permeability while enhancing the thermal stability of the blend membrane, which shows the feasibility for direct methanol fuel cell.  相似文献

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are attractive for portable and automobile power needs, but their commercialization is hampered by high methanol permeability and the high cost of the currently used Nafion membrane. We report here a novel, low-cost blend membrane consisting of polysulfone-2-amide-benzimidazole (a basic polymer) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (an acidic polymer), which facilitates proton conduction through acid–base interactions while preserving excellent chemical and mechanical stabilities. The blend membrane exhibits performance in DMFC much higher than that of Nafion 115 and similar to that of Nafion 112, but with a remarkably superior long-term performance than Nafion 112 due to significantly reduced methanol crossover, enhancing the commercialization prospects of DMFC.  相似文献

A series of block sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) (SPAEK) copolymers with different block lengths and ionic contents were synthesized by a two‐stage process. The morphology of these block SPAEK copolymers was investigated by various methods, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Dark colored ionic domains of hundreds of nanometers spreading as a cloud‐like belt were observed in TEM images. The sizes of the ionic domains as a function of block copolymer composition were determined from SAXS curves. The results for the evolution of ionic domains revealed that the block copolymers exhibited more clearly phase‐separated microstructure with increasing ionic contents and hydrophobic sequence lengths. Proton conductivity is closely related to the microstructure, especially the presence of large interconnected ionic domains or ionic channels. Block SPAEK membranes have interconnected ionic clusters to provide continuous hydrophilic channels, resulting in higher proton conductivity. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)-based polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) was successfully prepared by radiation grafting of a styrene monomer into PEEK films and the consequent selective sulfonation of the grafting chains in the film state. Using milder sulfonation, the sulfonation reactions proceeded at the grafted chains in preference to the phenylene rings of PEEK main chains; as a result, the grafted films could successfully transform to a PEM with conductivity of more than 0.1 S/cm. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) and conductivity of the grafted PEEK electrolyte membranes were controlled to the ranges of 1.2–2.9 mmol/g and 0.03–0.18 S/cm by changing the grafting degree. It should be noted that this is the first example of directly transforming super-engineering plastic films into a PEM using radiation grafting.  相似文献

Branched sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (Br‐SPEKS) were prepared with bisphenol A, bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone, 3,3′‐disodiumsulfonyl‐4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, and THPE (1,1,1‐tris‐p‐hydroxyphenylethane), respectively, at 180 °C using potassium carbonate in NMP (N‐methylpyrrolidinone). THPE, as a branching agent, was used with 0.4 mol % of bisphenol A to synthesize branched copolymers. Copolymers containing 10–50 mol % disulfonated units were cast from dimethylsulfoxide solutions to form films. Linear sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (SPEKS) were also synthesized without THPE. The films were converted from the salt to acid forms with dilute hydrochloric acid. A series of copolymers were studied by Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sorption experiments were conducted to observe the interaction of sulfonated polymers with water and methanol. The ion‐exchange capacity (IEC), a measure of proton conductivity, was evaluated. The synthesized Br‐SPEKS and SPEKS membranes exhibit conductivities (25 °C) from 1.04 × 10?3 to 4.32 × 10?3 S/cm, water swell from 20.18 to 62.35%, IEC from 0.24 to 0.83 mequiv/g, and methanol diffusion coefficients from 3.2 × 10?7 to 4.7 × 10?7 cm2/S at 25 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The evolution of crystallinity and polymorphism during hot-drawing of amorphous poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) as a function of strain rate, draw ratio, and temperature was investigated. In modification I, the competition of chain extension and molecular alignment is responsible for the strain rate and temperature dependence. Modification II crystallization is basically controlled by chain extension during stretching. The former can be transformed into the latter via relaxation during stretching or annealing at elevated temperature.  相似文献

The blend membranes of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) (sPAEK) (IEC = 1.0 mequiv./g)/Nafion® and the blend membranes of sPAEK (IEC = 1.0 mequiv./g)/sPAEK (IEC = 1.7 mequiv./g) were prepared. sPAEK with low IEC was introduced to reduce the methanol permeability through the membrane. Morphology, water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the blend membranes were investigated by SEM, AFM, AC impedance spectroscopy and permeability measuring instrument. The cross-sections of blend membranes showed phase-separated morphologies. The effect of phase-separated morphology on the properties of blend membranes was investigated. The properties like water uptake, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability of sPAEK/Nafion® blend membranes showed similar values with sPAEK and properties of sPAEK/sPAEK blend membranes showed intermediate values of two polymers due to the difference in morphology of the blend membranes. sPAEK/sPAEK blend membranes showed relatively high proton conductivity and lowered methanol permeability compared to Nafion®. sPAEK/sPAEK blend membranes could be a competent substitution for Nafion®.  相似文献

The development of a new type of composite membrane consisting of a microfiltration support membrane, an immobilised liquid membrane phase and a hydrophilic, charged polymer layer and its function as a supported liquid membrane (SLM) for copper selective transport are described. The ion-exchange layers function as stabilisation layers to improve the membrane lifetime and consist of sulphonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). This polymer shows a high permeability for copper ions due to the presence of fixed negative charges and to its swelling capacity in an aqueous phase.A method was developed to prepare composite membranes composed of the support membranes Celgard with one stabilisation layer on either the feed or strip side of the membrane or on both sides. Good adhesion of homogeneous, negatively charged, hydrophilic SPEEK layers to the hydrophobic macroporous support membranes could only be established when the support membranes were first hydrophilised with a concentrated sulphuric acid solution containing 5 wt% free SO3.The lifetime of the SLMs is significantly improved when one stabilisation layer is applied at the strip side or two layers at both sides of the SLM. A second advantage of this composite SLM is the increase in copper flux caused by a decrease in thickness of liquid membrane phase. However, when SPEEK penetrates entirely through some pores of the support membrane, ions diffuse non-specifically through the SPEEK matrix resulting in an undesired selectivity loss. This phenomenon occurs only when thin Celgard membranes are used as support membranes.  相似文献

This paper describes the preparation and electrochemical properties of new proton conducting polymer membranes, sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether) membrane-containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) moieties for fuel cell applications. The sulfonated polymers were prepared via thermal cyclodimerization of 9,9-bis(4-trifluorovinyloxyphenyl)fluorene and subsequent post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) as a sulfonating agent. The post-sulfonation reaction was carried out by changing the molar ratio of CSA/repeating unit of the polymer at room temperature for 5 h and the resulting sulfonated polymers showed different degrees of sulfonation (DS) and ion exchange capacities (IEC). With the increment of CSA content, the DS, IEC and water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. Their proton conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature. The polymer membrane with an IEC value of 1.86 mmol/g showed a water content of 25% similar to Nafion-115's but showed higher proton conductivity than Nafion-115 over the temperature 25–80 °C. The polymer membrane with lower water uptake and higher IEC showed similar proton conductivity and methanol permeability to Nafion-115. These results confirmed that the sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether)-containing PFCB groups could be a promising material for fuel cell membranes.  相似文献

A series of sulfonated block poly(ether ether ketone)s with different sulfonic acid group clusters were successfully synthesized by nucleophilic displacement condensation. Membranes were accordingly cast from their DMSO solutions, and fully characterized by determining the ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, proton conductivity, dimensional stabilities and mechanical properties. The experimental results showed that the main properties of the membrane can be tailored by changing the cluster size of sulfonic acid groups. The membrane of block-7c(40) has good mechanical, oxidative and dimensional stabilities together with high proton conductivity (5.09 × 10−2 S cm−1) at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity. The membranes also possess excellent thermal and dimensional stabilities. These polymers are potential and promising proton conducting membrane material for PEM full cell applications.  相似文献
