We have investigated the nature of polaritons which propagate on the surface of semi-infinite anisotropic dielectric and magnetic media and find that the surface polaritons are regular surface waves [i.e., the penetration constant α (ω) is real] only for special orientations of the wave vector k and of the normal to the surface n relative to the principal axes. In the case of biaxial crystals, regular surface polaritons occur when k and/or n is along a principal axis of the dielectric tensor ε(ω) for dielectric media [or the magnetic permeability tensor μ(ω) for magnetic media]. When k and n are both directed along principal axes, the surface polaritons are TM with E in the saggital plane for dielectric media. One finds that surface polaritons which are coupled photon-virtual surface dipole excitation modes can exist on “surface active” anisotropic media in addition to the familiar coupled photon-real surface dipole excitation modes. When neither k nor n are along principal axes, the surface polaritons that occur are, with the exception of special orientations, “generalized” surface waves [i.e., α(ω) is complex]. The Poynting vectors of the propagating surface polaritons are always in the plane of the surface but not, in general, along k. These results, which hold for uniaxial crystals, are also applicable to gyromagnetic media and to gyrodielectric media. This theory is also applicable to surface polaritons which propagate along the interface between two media, one or both of which is anisotropic, and with one or the other serving as the “surface active” medium.  相似文献

Analytical expressions on how the eigenvalue of an existing surface state/mode in one-dimensional semi-infinite periodic systems depends on the boundary location and the boundary condition are obtained, by using a Sturm-Liouville theory approach. The obtained equations are verified by numerical calculations. A direct consequence of the results obtained is that the termination of the periodicity at a boundary τ in a semi-infinite periodic system does not always cause a surface state/mode in a specific band gap.  相似文献

采用转移矩阵方法,研究了含结构缺陷层的两耦合半无限超晶格(GaAs/AlAs)中的局域界面声子-极化激元模性质. 研究发现,含不同介电特性的缺陷超晶格结构中的局域界面声子-极化激元模在剩余射线区[ωTO, ωLO]的分布情况与数量存在不同,而且反对称模表现出不同的特征. 文中着重研究了缺陷层介电常数与角频率无关的缺陷超晶格,发现该结构中的局域界面声子-极化激元模对组分层的排列顺序与厚度、缺陷层的厚度以及横向波数有着不同程度的依赖.  相似文献

We present a theory of the photonic band structure of three-dimensional arrays of quantum dots (QDs). A system of Maxwell’s and material equations is solved and the dispersion equation for exciton-polaritons is derived making allowance for a nonlocal dielectric response of quasi-zero-dimensional excitons confined in QDs. The reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated for a single plane, a pair of planes and a stack of equidistant planes of QDs. Two different approaches are proposed to perform a calculation. One of them is based on recurrent equations relating the reflection coefficients for N + 1 and N planes, while in the other approach the Bloch solutions for an infinite QD lattice are used.  相似文献

In a real photonic crystal, there exist three modes: propagation mode, evanescence mode and surface mode. Using ideal modal, semi-infinite photonic crystals, we study their effects on the transmission spectrum of photonic crystals, respectively. Because there exists only one air–crystal interface in a semi-infinite photonic crystal, no multiple reflection occurs and no evanescent modes and backward-propagating modes exist in this structure. The effects of the evanescence modes are studied by comparing the transmission spectrum of a finite-thickness photonic crystal slab and that of a semi-infinite photonic crystal. In addition, the effects of the backward-propagating modes are investigated using a coated semi-infinite photonic crystal structure. Finally, we study the effects of the surface modes, and find that the transmission spectrum of a semi-infinite photonic crystal is strongly dependent on its termination.  相似文献

Plasmon and polariton modes are derived for an ideal semi-infinite (half-space) plasma and an ideal plasma slab by using a general, unifying procedure, based on equations of motion, Maxwell's equations and suitable boundary conditions. Known results are re-obtained in much a more direct manner and new ones are derived. The approach consists of representing the charge disturbances by a displacement field in the positions of the moving particles (electrons). The dielectric response and the electron energy loss are computed. The surface contribution to the energy loss exhibits an oscillatory behaviour in the transient regime near the surfaces. The propagation of an electromagnetic wave in these plasmas is treated by using the retarded electromagnetic potentials. The resulting integral equations are solved and the reflected and refracted waves are computed, as well as the reflection coefficient. For the slab we compute also the transmitted wave and the transmission coefficient. Generalized Fresnel's relations are thereby obtained for any incidence angle and polarization. Bulk and surface plasmon-polariton modes are identified. As it is well known, the field inside the plasma is either damped (evanescent) or propagating (transparency regime), and the reflection coefficient for a semi-infinite plasma exhibits an abrupt enhancement on passing from the propagating regime to the damped one (total reflection). Similarly, apart from characteristic oscillations, the reflection and transmission coefficients for a plasma slab exhibit an appreciable enhancement in the damped regime.  相似文献

The optical properties of a gold film deposited on a quartz substrate with periodic grooves were investigated theoretically. The main peculiarities of the spectra are due to the excitation of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). It is shown that the empty lattice approximation (ELA) for the SPPs is well applicable for the structure of interest. Two different approaches for deriving the air-gold SPP dispersion curves are compared. Our special attention is focused on the wavelength region approaching the d-band in gold, where the dielectric function is of a strongly non-Drude-type.  相似文献

Nonlocal investigations are presented for exciton-photon coupling in three-dimensional nano-spherical-particle photonic crystals in compound lattices for a tailored dielectric environment to optimize the optical properties of nano particles. The photonic band structure can be modified by tuning the nano particle size and the distance between two interlacing identical face-centered sub-lattices making up the photonic crystal lattice. A complete photonic band gap with a gap-midgap ratio as large as 40.82% has been found in the wurzite structure under the current investigation.  相似文献

Magneto-phonon polaritons in a two-dimension photonic crystal (PC) are discussed. This PC is constructed by embedding a periodical square lattice of ionic-crystal cylinders into an antiferromagnet. The two media are dispersive, with their individual resonant frequencies near each other. We first set up an effective-medium method to obtain the effective magnetic permeability and dielectric permittivity of the PC, followed by the dispersion relations of surface and bulk polaritons. There are a number of new surface polaritons, and two new distinctive bulk polariton bands in which the negative refraction and left-handedness can appear. The numerical calculations are based on the example, FeF2/TlBr PC.  相似文献

The dispersion relation of surface polaritons for a uniaxial antiferromagnet are calculated taking account of retardation. In the presence of an external magnetic field, one finds that inequivalent propagation occurs in the Voigt configuration (±n? × H0). For a high frequency permeability smaller than a critical value, the surface polaritons in the ?n? × H0 direction, where n? is the normal to the interface, merges in the same frequency domain as the bulk polaritons.  相似文献

There is always need for secure transmission of information and simultaneously compact-size photonic circuits. This can be achieved if surface plasmon-polaritons(SPPs) are used as source of information, and the reduced hacking as the transmission phenomenon. In this article, an SPP-based reduced hacking scheme is presented at interface between atomic medium and metallic conductor. The SPP propagation is manipulated with conductivity of the metal. The delay or advance of the SPP is found to create nanosecond time gap which can be used for storing and sending the information safely. The reduced hacking is further modified with conductivity of the metal and the control parameters of the atomic medium.  相似文献

The low-temperature luminescence spectrum of anthracene crystals is investigated by applying simultaneous time and frequency resolution. The complicated kinetics of the emission in the polariton bottleneck region reflects directly the evolution and relaxation of the polariton distribution in the crystal. Three distinct relaxation stages are distinguished: (1) the ultrafast decay of initial vibronic excitations, mediated by optical phonons and resulting in a broad distribution of polaritons near the band bottom; (2) the formation of a narrow distribution of polaritons with a characteristic time of 30 ps, which is caused by scattering on acoustic phonons; (3) relaxation through the bottleneck region on a subnanosecond time scale. It is suggested that the polaritons immediately below the resonance frequency are responsible for the observed excitonic energy transfer in anthracene crystals.  相似文献
