We study the magnetic field dependence of the dielectric response of large cylindrical molecules such as nanotubes. When a field-induced level crossing takes place, an applied electric field has two effects: it may cause a linear instead of the usual quadratic Stark effect or the difference in the quadratic Stark coefficient of the two levels leads to a discontinuity in the polarization. Explicit calculations are performed for doped nanotubes and a rich structure in the real part of the low-frequency dielectric function is found when a magnetic field is applied along the cylinder axis. It is suggested that studies of can serve as a spectroscopic tool for the investigation of large ring-shaped or cylindrical molecules. Applying Gibb's geometrical methods to the thermodynamics of H-plasmas we explore the landscape of the free energy as a function of the degrees of ionization and dissociation. Several approximations for the free energy are discussed. We show that in the region of partial ionization/dissociation the quantum Debye-Hückel approximation (QDHA) yields a rather good but still simple representation which allows to include magnetic field and fluctuation effects. By using relations of Onsager-Landau-type the probability of fluctuations and ionization/dissociation processes are described. We show that the degrees of ionization/dissociation are probabilistic quantities which are subject to a relatively large dispersion. Magnetic field effects are studied. The fine magnetic stray field from a vortex structure of micron-sized permalloy (Ni80Fe20) elements has been studied by high-resolution magnetic force microscopy. By systematically studying the width of the stray field gradient distribution at different tip-to-sample distances, we show that the half-width at half-maximum (HWHM) of the signal from vortex core can be as narrow as ∼21 nm at a closest tip-to-sample distance of 23 nm, even including the convolution effect of the finite size of the magnetic tip. a weak circular reverse component is found around the center of the magnetic vortex in the measured magnetic force microscope (MFM) signals, which can be attributed to the reverse magnetization around the vortex core. Successive micromagnetic and MFM imaging simulations show good agreements with our experimental results on the width of the stray field distribution.  相似文献

We report a study of the peak-effect phase diagram of a strongly disordered type-II superconductor V-21 at. %Ti using ac magnetic susceptibility and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). In this system, the peak effect appears only at fields higher than 3.4 T. The sample is characterized by strong atomic disorder. Vortex states with field-cooled thermal histories show that both deep in the mixed state, as well as close to the peak effect, there exist no long-range orientationally ordered vortex lattices. The SANS scattering radial widths reveal vortex states ordered in the sub-mum scale. We conjecture that the peak effect in this system is a remnant of the Bragg glass disordering transition, but occurs on submicron length scales due to the presence of strong atomic disorder on larger length scales.  相似文献

Large increases of mobility of local segmental relaxation observed in polymer films as the film thickness is decreased, as evidenced by decreases of the glass temperature, are not found for relaxation mechanisms that have longer length scales including the Rouse relaxation modes and the diffusion of entire polymer chains. We show that the coupling model predictions, when extended to consider polymer thin films, are consistent with a large increase of the mobility of the local segmental motions and the lack of such a change for the Rouse modes and the diffusion of entire polymer chains. There are two effects that can reduce the coupling parameter of the local segmental relaxation in thin films. One is the chain orientation that is induced parallel to the surface when the film thickness h becomes smaller than the end-to-end distance of the chains and the other is a finite-size effect when h is no longer large compared to the cooperative length scale. Extremely thin ( ≈ 1.5 nm) films obtained by intercalating a polymer into layered silicates have thickness significantly less than the cooperative length scale near the bulk polymer glass transition temperature. As a result, the coupling parameter of the local segmental relaxation in such thin films is reduced almost to zero. With this plausible assumption, we show the coupling model can explain quantitatively the large decrease of the local segmental relaxation time found experimentally. The dipole modes of non-parabolic quantum dots are studied by means of their current and density patterns as well as with their local absorption distribution. The anticrossing of the so-called Bernstein modes originates from the coupling with electron-hole excitations of the two Landau bands which are occupied at the corresponding magnetic fields. Non-quadratic terms in the potential cause an energy separation between bulk and edge current modes in the anticrossing region. On a local scale the fragmented peaks absorb energy in complementary spatial regions which evolve with the magnetic field. Numerical simulations of the equations of motion of 300 charged particles confined to a plane with an additional magnetic field orthogonal to the plane reproduce recently observed self-organization of non-neutral plasmas into a small number of interacting vortices. In the presence of damping we observe crystallized vortices, i.e. vortices with regular internal structure. We also observe crystallized vortex crystals, i.e. geometric patterns of crystallized vortices. Fractal vortex arrangements are investigated and found to be stable. Our results are relevant for quantum dots and artificial atoms. Received: 24 February 1998 / Revised: 4 March 1998 / Accepted: 4 May 1998  相似文献

We investigate the behaviour of a single Abrikosov vortex trapped in a mesoscopic superconducting cylindrical surface with a magnetic field applied transverse to its axis. In the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism we show that, provided the transport current and the magnetic field are not large, the vortex behaves as an overdamped quasi-particle in a tilted washboard potential. The cylindrical thin strip with the trapped vortex exhibits E(J) curves and time-dependent electric fields very similar to the ones exhibited by a resistively shunted Josephson weak link.  相似文献

In tilted magnetic fields, vortices in anisotropic superconductors form one-dimensional arrangements, called vortex chains. We have visualized vortex chains by Bitter decoration and magneto-optical technique. The fundamental energy scale for the attractive interaction between pancake and Josephson vortices is evaluated by observing vortex chains under various conditions. We also explore how the vortex chains evolve when the large in-plane field is applied or when the anisotropy parameter of the system is changed  相似文献

The atom optics of Bose-Einstein condensates containing a vortex of circulation one is discussed. We first analyze in detail the reflection of such a condensate falling on an atomic mirror. In a second part, we consider a rotating condensate in the case of attractive interactions. We show that for sufficiently large nonlinearity the rotational symmetry of the rotating condensate is broken. The magnetoresistance (MR) of CeCoIn5 is notably different from that in many conventional metals. We show that a pronounced crossover from negative to positive MR at elevated temperatures and fixed magnetic fields is determined by the scaling behavior of quasiparticle effective mass. At a quantum critical point (QCP) this dependence generates kinks (crossover points from fast to slow growth) in thermodynamic characteristics (like specific heat, magnetization, etc.) at some temperatures when a strongly correlated electron system transits from the magnetic field induced Landau-Fermi liquid (LFL) regime to the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) one taking place at rising temperatures. We show that the above kink-like peculiarity separates two distinct energy scales in QCP vicinity - low temperature LFL scale and high temperature one related to NFL regime. Our comprehensive theoretical analysis of experimental data permits to reveal for the first time new MR and kinks scaling behavior as well as to identify the physical reasons for above energy scales.  相似文献

We use wavelets to decompose the volatility (standard deviation) of intraday (S&P500) return data across scales. We show that when investigating two-point correlation functions of the volatility logarithms across different time scales, one reveals the existence of a causal information cascade from large scales (i.e. small frequencies) to fine scales. We quantify and visualize the information flux across scales. We provide a possible interpretation of our findings in terms of market dynamics. We consider the induction of a magnetic field in flows of an electrically conducting fluid at low magnetic Prandtl number and large kinetic Reynolds number. Using the separation between the magnetic and kinetic diffusive length scales, we propose a new numerical approach. The coupled magnetic and fluid equations are solved using a mixed scheme, where the magnetic field fluctuations are fully resolved and the velocity fluctuations at small scale are modeled using a large eddy simulation (LES) scheme. We study the response of a forced Taylor-Green flow to an externally applied field: topology of the mean induction and time fluctuations at fixed locations. The results are in remarkable agreement with existing experimental data; a global 1/f behavior at long times is also evidenced.  相似文献

We investigated the vortex lattice ordering induced by an applied current in thick (700-900 nm) Mo-Re films with strong pinning. Measurements of I-V characteristics as a function of field and at different temperatures were carried out. We found that, as in the case of weakly pinning amorphous samples, dynamic ordering can occur only if the size of the vortex correlated region is at least two times the intervortex distance.

We study spontaneous pattern formation in a glass-forming nematic liquid crystal during the magnetically induced dynamic Fréedericksz transition. Pattern growth rates and wavelengths as functions of the magnetic field are extracted from optical transmission textures of thin planar cells. The characteristics of the observed stripe pattern can be related to viscoelastic parameters of the nematic by means of a linear stability analysis of director fluctuation modes. The viscous properties of the material allow to vary the time scales of the experiment with temperature by orders of magnitude, leaving the spatial structure of the pattern essentially unchanged. We find that the ratios of shear and rotational viscosity coefficients relevant for the pattern wavelength selection remain constant in the temperature range investigated, whereas their absolute values change by almost two orders. We consider a 3D dilute Bose-Einstein condensate at thermal equilibrium in a rotating harmonic trap. The condensate wavefunction is a local minimum of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional and we determine it numerically with the very efficient conjugate gradient method. For single vortex configurations in a cigar-shaped harmonic trap we find that the vortex line is bent, in agreement with the numerical prediction of Garcia-Ripoll and Perez-Garcia [Phys. Rev. A 63, 041603 (2001)]. We derive a simple energy functional for the vortex line in a cigar-shaped condensate which allows to understand physically why the vortex line bends and to predict analytically the minimal rotation frequency required to stabilize the bent vortex line. This analytical prediction is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. It also allows to find in a simple way a saddle point of the energy, where the vortex line is in a stationary configuration in the rotating frame but not a local minimum of energy. Finally we investigate numerically the effect of thermal fluctuations on the vortex line for a condensate with a straight vortex: we can predict what happens in a single realization of the experiment by a Monte Carlo sampling of an atomic field quasi-distribution function of the density operator of the gas at thermal equilibrium in the Bogoliubov approximation. We present a study of sound propagation through a single vortex by direct numerical simulations (DNS) compared to experimental measurements. We analyse the amplitude and the phase shift of the sound wave when it interacts with the vortical flow and we display the focusing effects produced by the vortex. We show that the turbulent fluctuations have a little effect on the sound phase shift whereas they induce a strong defocusing effect on the sound amplitude. We study the director field around a spherical particle immersed in a uniformly aligned nematic liquid crystal and assume that the molecules prefer a homeotropic orientation at the surface of the particle. Three structures are possible: a dipole, a Saturn-ring, and a surface-ring configuration, which we investigate by numerically minimizing the Frank free energy supplemented by a magnetic-field and a surface term. In the dipole configuration, which is the absolutely stable structure for micron-size particles and sufficiently strong surface anchoring, a twist transition is found and analyzed. We show that a transition from the dipole to the Saturn ring configuration is induced by either decreasing the particle size or by applying a magnetic field. The effect of metastability and the occurrence of hysteresis in connection with a magnetic field are discussed. The surface-ring configuration appears when the surface-anchoring strength W is reduced. It is also favored by a large saddle-splay constant K24. A comparison with recent experiments [#!itapdb:Poulin1997!#,#!itapdb:Poulin1998!#] gives a lower bound for W, i.e., for the interface of water and pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB) in the presence of the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate. We present a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shell model suitable for computation of various energy fluxes of MHD turbulence for very small and very large magnetic Prandtl numbers Pm; such computations are inaccessible to direct numerical simulations. For small Pm, we observe that both kinetic and magnetic energy spectra scale as k?5/3 in the inertial range, but the dissipative magnetic energy scales as k?11/3exp?(? k/kη). Here the kinetic energy at large length scale feeds the large-scale magnetic field that cascades to small-scale magnetic field, which gets dissipated by Joule heating. The large-Pm dynamo has a similar behaviour except that the dissipative kinetic energy scales as k?13/3. For this case, the large-scale velocity field transfers energy to the large-scale magnetic field, which gets transferred to small-scale velocity and magnetic fields; the energy of the small-scale magnetic field also gets transferred to the small-scale velocity field, and the energy thus accumulated is dissipated by the viscous force.  相似文献
