The validity of Fisher's scaling form in a magnetic thin film with non-ideal surface will be discussed within mean field theory. It is found that only for some limiting cases, Fisher's form of scaling can be obtained. However, we show that in the general case, additional quantities associated with surface effects have to be added to the scaling theory. Furthermore we compute the scaling form of the correlation function at the critical point. It exhibits clearly the dimensional crossover effect.  相似文献

We report a detailed scaling analysis of resistivity rho(T,n) measured for several high-mobility 2D electron systems in the vicinity of the 2D metal-insulator transition. We analyzed the data using the two-parameter scaling approach and general scaling ideas. This enables us to determine the critical electron density, two critical indices, and temperature dependence for the separatrix in the self-consistent manner. In addition, we reconstruct the empirical scaling function describing a two-parameter surface which fits well the rho(T,n) data.  相似文献

We study the quantum phase transition properties of a three-dimensional periodic array of Josephson junctions with charging energy that includes both the self and mutual junction capacitances. We use the phase fluctuation algebra between number and phase operators, given by the Euclidean group E2, and we effectively map the problem onto a solvable quantum generalization of the spherical model. We obtain a phase diagram as a function of temperature, Josephson coupling, and charging energy. We also analyze the corresponding fluctuation conductivity and its universal scaling form in the vicinity of the zero-temperature quantum critical point.  相似文献

Abstract

The top part of the coexistence curve of methyl fluoride in the critical region has been determined first by direct observation of the disappearance of the meniscus of the fluid situated in a high-pressure light scattering cell and subsequently from the measured maximum depolarization ratio of an appreciable number of isochores close to the critical point. The experimental data obtained from direct observations yield a coexistence curve which nearly coincides with that found recently from pVT measurements. However, the data obtained from light scattering experiments describe a gravity induced coexistence curve which lies above the previous one and which shows a minimum at the critical point. The complete experimental data have been used to evaluate the critical parameters pc, ρc and Tc and the critical exponent β.  相似文献

Critical dynamics in film geometry is analyzed within the field-theoretical approach. In particular we consider the case of purely relaxational dynamics (Model A) and Dirichlet boundary conditions, corresponding to the so-called ordinary surface universality class on both confining boundaries. The general scaling properties for the linear response and correlation functions and for dynamic Casimir forces are discussed. Within the Gaussian approximation we determine the analytic expressions for the associated universal scaling functions and study quantitatively in detail their qualitative features as well as their various limiting behaviors close to the bulk critical point. In addition we consider the effects of time-dependent fields on the fluctuation-induced dynamic Casimir force and determine analytically the corresponding universal scaling functions and their asymptotic behaviors for two specific instances of instantaneous perturbations. The universal aspects of nonlinear relaxation from an initially ordered state are also discussed emphasizing the different crossovers occurring during this evolution. The model considered is relevant to the critical dynamics of actual uniaxial ferromagnetic films with symmetry-preserving conditions at the confining surfaces and for Monte Carlo simulations of spin system with Glauber dynamics and free boundary conditions.  相似文献

We study the behavior of systems in which the interaction contains a long-range component that does not dominate the critical behavior. Such a component is exemplified by the van der Waals force between molecules in a simple liquid-vapor system. In the context of the mean spherical model with periodic boundary conditions we are able to identify, for temperatures close above T c, finite-size contributions due to the subleading term in the interaction that are dominant in this region decaying algebraically as a function of L. This mechanism goes beyond the standard formulation of the finite-size scaling but is to be expected in real physical systems. We also discuss other ways in which critical point behavior is modified that are of relevance for analysis of Monte Carlo simulations of such systems. A quantum phase transition (QPT) in a simple model that describes the coexistence of atoms and diatomic molecules is studied. The model, which is briefly discussed, presents a second-order ground state phase transition in the thermodynamic (or large particle number) limit, changing from a molecular condensate in one phase to an equilibrium of diatomic molecules–atoms in coexistence in the other one. The usual markers for this phase transition are the ground state energy and the expected value of the number of atoms (alternatively, the number of molecules) in the ground state. In this work, other markers for the QPT, such as the inverse participation ratio (IPR), and particularly, the Rényi entropy, are analyzed and proposed as QPT markers. Both magnitudes present abrupt changes at the critical point of the QPT.  相似文献

The caloric curve for mononuclear configurations is studied with a schematic model. We investigate the dependence of the entropy on the density and effective-mass profiles. In finite nuclei, a plateau in the caloric curve is a consequence of decreasing density and the destruction of correlations rather than an indication of phase coexistence. The mononuclear regime is metastable with respect to binary fission at low excitation energy and with respect to multifragmentation at high excitation. The statistical framework presented here is suitable to treat scenarios where experimental conditions are set to favor a population of highly excited mononuclei.  相似文献

Anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau superconductors of extreme type-II are considered in an approximation where magnetic field fluctuations are neglected. A formulation of the scaling properties is presented for the singular part of the free energy density in the presence of a magnetic field. From the existence of a magnetization, a diamagnetic susceptibility and superconductivity we determine the limiting behavior of the scaling function in the vicinity of the zero field transition temperature, where critical fluctuations dominate. Our predictions for the temperature and field dependence of magnetization, magnetic torque and melting line etc., uncover the universal critical properties and provide an extension of hitherto used mean-field treatments. The results are consistent with experimental data. Received: 24 April 1998 / Accepted: 5 May 1998  相似文献

We examine the last unexplored regime of the asymmetric six-vertex model: the low-temperature phase of the so-called ferroelectric model. The original publication of the exact solution by Sutherland, Yang, and Yang and various derivations and reviews published afterward do not contain many details about this regime. We study the exact solution for this model by numerical and analytical methods. In particular, we examine the behavior of the model in the vicinity of an unusual coexistence point that we call the conical point. This point corresponds to additional singularities in the free energy that were not discussed in the original solution. We show analytically that at this point many polarizations coexist, and that unusual scaling properties hold in its vicinity.  相似文献

The magnetoresistance (MR) of CeCoIn5 is notably different from that in many conventional metals. We show that a pronounced crossover from negative to positive MR at elevated temperatures and fixed magnetic fields is determined by the scaling behavior of quasiparticle effective mass. At a quantum critical point (QCP) this dependence generates kinks (crossover points from fast to slow growth) in thermodynamic characteristics (like specific heat, magnetization, etc.) at some temperatures when a strongly correlated electron system transits from the magnetic field induced Landau-Fermi liquid (LFL) regime to the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) one taking place at rising temperatures. We show that the above kink-like peculiarity separates two distinct energy scales in QCP vicinity - low temperature LFL scale and high temperature one related to NFL regime. Our comprehensive theoretical analysis of experimental data permits to reveal for the first time new MR and kinks scaling behavior as well as to identify the physical reasons for above energy scales.  相似文献

We explore analytically the nature of the transition to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid phases in the vicinity of the tricritical point, where these phases begin to appear. We make use of an expansion of the free energy up to an overall sixth order, both in order parameter amplitude and in wavevector. We first explore the minimization of this free energy within a subspace, made of arbitrary superpositions of plane waves with wavevectors of different orientations but same modulus. We show that the standard second order FFLO phase transition is unstable and that a first order transition occurs at higher temperature. Within this subspace we prove that it is favorable to have a real order parameter and that, among these states, those with the smallest number of plane waves are preferred. This leads to an order parameter with a cos( . ) dependence, in agreement with preceding work. Finally we show that the order parameter at the transition is only very slightly modified by higher harmonics contributions when the constraint of working within the above subspace is released. Measurements of the coexistence curve of the binary-fluid mixture isobutyric with added salt at various concentrations show an important dependence on the critical temperature and the ritical exponent . The phase-transition region shifts as a function of the salt concentration. The effective -critical exponent is neither compatible with the Ising value nor with the Fisher renormalized value Received 12 June 1998 and Received in final form 26 July 1999  相似文献

We study Onsager's theory of large, coherent vortices in turbulent flows in the approximation of the point-vortex model for two-dimensional Euler hydrodynamics. In the limit of a large number of point vortices with the energy perpair of vortices held fixed, we prove that the entropy defined from the microcanonical distribution as a function of the (pair-specific) energy has its maximum at a finite value and thereafter decreases, yielding the negative-temperature states predicted by Onsager. We furthermore show that the equilibrium vorticity distribution maximizes an appropriate entropy functional subject to the constraint of fixed energy, and, under regularity assumptions, obeys the Joyce-Montgomery mean-field equation. We also prove that, under appropriate conditions, the vorticity distribution is the same as that for the canonical distribution, a form of equivalence of ensembles. We establish a large-fluctuation theory for the microcanonical distributions, which is based on a level-3 large-deviations theory for exchangeable distributions. We discuss some implications of that property for the ergodicity requirements to justify Onsager's theory, and also the theoretical foundations of a recent extension to continuous vorticity fields by R. Robert and J. Miller. Although the theory of two-dimensional vortices is of primary interest, our proofs actually apply to a very general class of mean-field models with long-range interactions in arbitrary dimensions.  相似文献

Extended de Gennes-Fisher (EdGF) local-functional method has been applied to the thermodynamic Casimir effect away from the critical point for systems in the Ising universality class confined between parallel plane plates with symmetric boundary conditions [denoted (ab)=(++)]. Results on the universal scaling functions of the Casimir force W++(y) (y is a temperature-dependent scaling variable) and Gibbs adsorption G[over ](y) are presented in spatial dimension d=3. Also, the mean-field form of the universal scaling function of the Gibbs adsorption G[over ](y) is derived within the local functional theory. Asymptotic behavior of W++(y) for large values of the scaling variable y is analyzed in general dimension d.  相似文献
