4-n-Alkoxyphenyl4-[(4-n-alkoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)ethynyl]benzoates (compound A) are synthesised by a convenient method. These compounds exhibit only enantiotropic nematic phases and have very high clearing points. These compounds (As) can be transformed into corresponding ethane derivatives, via hydrogenation using a palladium catalyst (Pd/C), which exhibit monotropic nematic phases. The effect of the ethylene bridge (–CH2CH2–) on the mesomorphic behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

Their liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated by optical polarizing microscopy and DSC. Series A, B and C exhibit the nematic phase. The phase transition behaviour of series D is anomalous. The compounds of series D with a short alkoxy chain exhibit enantiotropic smectic A and nematic phases, while those with a long alkoxy chain exhibit only the nematic phase.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterisation and mesomorphic properties of new liquid crystals are reported. The goal was to obtain amides starting from 7-decanoyloxychromone-3-carboxylic acid and 4-n-alkoxyanilines. However, instead of the expected amides, in each case a mixture of two isomeric E/Z enaminones was isolated, with a ratio 3/1. The mesophase behaviour of the five mixtures was characterised and studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. The transitions are enantiotropic, the peaks being sharp and the mesomorphic range wide. All the compounds exhibit a smectic C phase and the derivatives with shorter chains also exhibit a nematic phase.  相似文献

Two homologous series of quinoline-containing liquid crystalline compounds were synthesised. Preparation of these compounds was completed in a short two-step reaction. Fair to good two-step overall yields of 63%–68%?and 50%–60%?were obtained respectively for the liquid crystalline compounds of 2-(4-alkylphenyl)-6-methylquinolines (nPQMe, n?=?4–8) and 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-6-methylquinolines (mOPQMe, m?=?3–7). Spectral analyses were in accordance with the expected structures. Polarising optical microscopy showed both series of compounds only display a nematic phase. Their thermotropic behaviours were further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry.  相似文献

The preparation, characterisation, thermotropic and optical properties of low-molecular azomethines with or without methoxy side group are described in this paper. The azomethine compounds were synthesised by condensation reaction of o-dianisidine/benzidine with para-halogen substituted benzaldehyde. Their properties were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry analysis, polarised optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. The azomethines present liquid crystalline behaviour with large mesophase range and high thermal stability. The compounds without lateral methoxy groups showed smectic A phase, while those with methoxy groups exhibited only nematic phase. The effect of methoxy group and different terminal substituents on the mesomorphic behaviour, molecular and optical properties was estimated in terms of parameters such as molecular polarisability, dipole moment, interdigitation parameter and axial ratio.  相似文献

A new series of copolymers with optically-active liquid crystalline side chain units has been synthesized from the comonomers (S)-2-[2-(4′-cyano-4-biphenylyloxy-1-methylethoxy]ethyl methacrylate ( 1 ) and di[6-(4-methoxy-4′-oxybiphenyl)hexyl]-2-methylene butane-1,4-dioate ( 4 ). Chiral nematic phases were exhibited by two members of the series, rich in monomer 1 , while a smectic phase was exhibited in copolymers rich in 4 . While it was thought possible that ordered chiral liquid crystalline phases may be induced by copolymerizing chiral mesogenic monomers with mesogenic derivatives of itaconic acid where the high side chain density encourages greater ordering in the system, no evidence of smectic C* phases could be found in the present systems. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
