Diamondoids, hydrocarbon molecules with cubic-diamond-cage structures, have unique properties with potential value for nanotechnology. The availability and ability to selectively functionalize this special class of nanodiamond materials opens new possibilities for surface modification, for high-efficiency field emitters in molecular electronics, as seed crystals for diamond growth, or as robust mechanical coatings. The properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of diamondoids are thus of fundamental interest for a variety of emerging applications. This paper presents the effects of thiol substitution position and polymantane order on diamondoid SAMs on gold using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A framework to determine both molecular tilt and twist through NEXAFS is presented and reveals highly ordered diamondoid SAMs, with the molecular orientation controlled by the thiol location. C 1s and S 2p binding energies are lower in adamantane thiol than alkane thiols on gold by 0.67 +/- 0.05 and 0.16 +/- 0.04 eV, respectively. These binding energies vary with diamondoid monolayer structure and thiol substitution position, consistent with different degrees of steric strain and electronic interaction with the substrate. This work demonstrates control over the assembly, in particular the orientational and electronic structure, providing a flexible design of surface properties with this exciting new class of diamond nanoparticles.  相似文献

The sulfonation of aromatic rings held at the surface of a covalently anchored self-assembled monolayer has been analyzed in terms of the rates and isomer distribution of the sulfonation process. The observed product distributions are similar to those observed in solution, though the data obtained suggest that the reaction rate and the ortho/para product ratio depend on the length of the tether anchoring the aryl ring to the monolayer interface. It was also found that the interface becomes progressively more disordered and the observed reaction rates decrease as the reaction progresses. There is no evidence for a bias in favor of reaction at the more exposed para-position nor is there evidence for an enhanced reaction rate due to the increased disorder and/or improved wetting as the reaction proceeds. This is the first detailed study of electrophilic aromatic substitution at a monolayer interface. It introduces new approaches to the spectroscopic analysis of reactions on self-assembled monolayers and provides a new general approach to the analysis of isomeric product distribution in such a setting.  相似文献

Intermolecular interactions of eleven different fluoroaromatic inhibitors are probed within the scaffolding of the crystal lattice of Phe-131-->Val carbonic anhydrase II. The degree and pattern of fluorine substitution on the inhibitor benzyl ring modulate its size, shape, and electronic character. In turn, these properties affect the geometry of intermolecular interactions between the fluoroaromatic rings of two different inhibitor molecules bound in the crystal lattice, as determined by X-ray crystallography. Depending on the degree and pattern of fluorine substitution, we observe a face-to-face (aromatic-aromatic) interaction, an atom-to-face (carbonyl-aromatic) interaction, or no interaction at all. These interaction geometries are analyzed with regard to van der Waals, electrostatic, and possible charge-transfer effects. For the aromatic-aromatic interactions investigated in this study, with aromatic ring quadrupoles specifically "tuned" by the degree and pattern of fluorination, the structural results suggest that London forces and charge-transfer complexation dominate over weakly polar electrostatic interactions in the association of aromatic ring pairs.  相似文献

The adsorption of L-histidine on clean and oxygen-covered Cu(110) surfaces has been studied by soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The valence band spectra, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen 1 s XPS and N K edge absorption spectra were measured for submonolayer, monolayer, and multilayer films. The spectra provide a detailed picture of the electronic structure and adsorption geometry at each coverage. In the monolayer, the histidine molecules are randomly oriented, in contrast to the submonolayer regime, where the molecules are coordinated to the copper surface with the imidazole functional group nearly parallel to, and strongly interacting with, the surface. The pi*/sigma* intensity ratio in NEXAFS spectra at the nitrogen edge varies strongly with angle, showing the imidazole ring is oriented. Adsorption models are proposed.  相似文献

The electronic structure of the regular, two-dimensional bacterial surface protein layer of Bacillus sphaericus NCTC 9602 has been examined by photoemission (PE) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Both the O 1s and the N 1s core-level PE spectra show a single structure, whereas the C 1s core-level spectrum appears manifold, suggesting similar chemical states for each oxygen atom and also for each nitrogen atom, while carbon atoms exhibit a range of chemical environments in the different functional groups of the amino acids. This result is supported by the element-specific NEXAFS spectra of the unoccupied valence electronic states, which exhibit a series of characteristic NEXAFS peaks that can be assigned to particular molecular orbitals of the amino acids by applying a phenomenological building-block model. The relative contributions of the C-O, C-N, and C-C bond originating signals into the C 1s PE spectrum are in good agreement with the number ratios of the corresponding bonds calculated from the known primary structure of the bacterial surface protein. First interpretation of the PE spectrum of the occupied valence states is achieved on the basis of electronic density-of-states calculations performed for small peptides. It was found that mainly the pi clouds of the aromatic rings contribute to both the lowest unoccupied and the highest occupied molecular orbitals.  相似文献

The interaction between glycine (NH2CH2COOH) layers and an ultrathin Al2O3 film grown epitaxially onto NiAl(110) was studied by temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, work function measurements, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. At monolayer coverages at 110 K, there are two coexisting molecular forms: the anionic (NH2CH2COO-) and the zwitterionic form (NH3+CH2COO-) of glycine. As deduced from the photoemission data, the buildup of multilayers at 110 K leads to a condensed phase predominantly in the zwitterionic state. In contrast to the monolayer at 110 K, the monolayer formed at 300 K consists primarily of glycine molecules in the anionic state. The latter species is adsorbed with the oxygen atoms of the carboxylic group pointing toward the substrate. The polarization-dependent C K- and O K-edge NEXAFS spectra indicate that the glycinate species in the monolayer at 300 K is oriented nearly perpendicular to the surface, with the amino group pointing away from the surface.  相似文献

The structure of self-assembled monolayers ofp-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid and the mixed monolayers of this acid with n-hexadecanoic acid on silver surface were studied by reflection-IR spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurement, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM), and atomic force microscopy. Exposure of the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylate monolayer to H2S vapor resulted in reorganization of the film structure into clusters of the corresponding free acids, in tens of nanometer dimension. Exposure of the mixed monolayer to H2S resulted in reorganization of the mixed monolayer film into phase-separated clusters of respective component molecules. The saturated aliphatic acid formed clusters of submicrometer size, whereas the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid formed clusters of tens of nanometer size, presumably due to different surface mobility and/or intermolecular interaction of the two types of molecule. Restoration of the monolayer film from the clusters, driven by the reaction between the free acid molecules and the basic surface sites, proceeded at different speeds for the two types of molecules. The saturated acid monolayer was restored much faster than the p-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid monolayer. A domain-separated monolayer in several micrometers scale was obtained. The process was imaged by tapping mode atomic force microscopy.  相似文献

The self-assembled monolayer of bipyridine derivative 1, which has two alkyl chains on each end, at the HOPG/1-phenyloctane interface was studied by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The detailed mechanism of a spontaneous change in the monolayer packing pattern by Pd coordination was studied. Uncomplexed 1 existed in a bent form in the monolayer, and the alkyl chains were interdigitated, whereas Pd-complexed 1 was in a straight form and the alkyl chains were not interdigitated. An intermediate state of 1 was successfully observed during metal coordination. The structure was the bent form with noninterdigitated alkyl chains. Equilibrium intermolecular distances reported from ab initio calculations indicate that the molecular width of the central aromatic part of uncomplexed 1 (7.5 A) is substantially smaller than that of the peripheral alkyl chain part (9.2 A). The bent form was suitable for covering up the surface to maximize the packing density. However, the molecular width of the aromatic unit of Pd-complexed 1 (9.1 A) was almost identical to that of the alkyl chain unit (9.2 A). Therefore, Pd-complexed 1 took the straight form in the monolayer. The observation of surface coverage by STM suggests that the bent form increases the packing density by as much as 16% compared with that of the straight form. These results indicate that the control of molecular width can be used to design molecular templates for nanostructure formation.  相似文献

Near-edge x-ray-absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy was adopted to probe the unoccupied electronic states of C60 anchored onto an organized assembly of 11-amino-1-undecane thiol on Au(111). The polarization dependence of the intensity of pi* resonance associated with C60 pi network revealed the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) system to be oriented with an average molecular tilt angle of 57 degrees with respect to the surface normal. Invoking the absence of solid-state band dispersion effects and in comparison to solid C60 and /or 1-ML C60/Au(111), the electronic structure of the resulting assembly was found dominated by spectral position shift and linewidth and intensity changes of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), LUMO+1, and LUMO+2 orbitals. The latter implied hybridization between N Pz of -NH2 group of thiolate SAM and pi levels of C60, resulting in a nucleophilic addition with a change in the symmetry of C60 from Ih to C1 in the SAM. Occurrence of a new feature at 285.3 eV in the NEXAFS spectrum, assigned previously to pi* graphitic LUMO, signified the formation of aggregated clusters, (C60)n of C60 monomer. Low tunneling current scanning tunneling microscopy confirmed them to be spherical and stable aggregates with n approximately 5.  相似文献

Extracellular biomineralization proteins such as salivary statherin control the growth of hydroxyapatite (HAP), the principal component of teeth and bones. Despite the important role that statherin plays in the regulation of hard tissue formation in humans, the surface recognition mechanisms involved are poorly understood. The protein-surface interaction likely involves very specific contacts between the surface atoms and the key protein side chains. This study demonstrates for the first time the power of combining near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy with element labeling to quantify the orientation of individual side chains. In this work, the 15 amino acid N-terminal binding domain of statherin has been adsorbed onto HAP surfaces, and the orientations of phenylalanine rings F7 and F14 have been determined using NEXAFS analysis and fluorine labels at individual phenylalanine sites. The NEXAFS-derived phenylalanine tilt angles have been verified with sum frequency generation spectroscopy.  相似文献

Monolayers of oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) (OPE) molecules have exhibited promise in molecular electronic test structures. This paper discusses films formed from a novel molecule within this class, 2-fluoro-4-phenylethynyl-1-[(4-acetylthio)phenylethynyl]benzene (F-OPE). The conditions of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation were systematically altered to fabricate reproducible high-quality molecular monolayers from the acetate-protected F-OPE molecule. Detailed characterization of the F-OPE monolayers was performed by using an array of surface probes, including reflection absorbance infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), contact angle (CA) measurements, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XPS and RAIRS established that the SAM formed without removal of the F substituent and without oxidation of the thiol. The monolayer thickness, determined from SE and AFM based nanolithography, was consistent with the formation of a densely packed monolayer. The valence electronic structure of the SAM was consistent with an aromatic structure shifted by the electron-withdrawing fluorine substituent and intermolecular coupling within an oriented array of molecules.  相似文献

Adsorption of NO on the Rh(111) surface has been studied in the monolayer, bilayer, and multilayer regimes with near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. NO dimer layers are formed on a chemisorbed monomer layer. The polarization dependence in the NEXAFS spectra of the dimer components has contradicted the previous assignments. To determine the structure of the NO dimer layers from the polarization analysis of the NEXAFS spectra, ab initio configuration interaction calculations have been carried out for some low-lying core excited states of the weakly bound NO dimer with cis-ONNO planar geometry. It is revealed that the NO dimers in the multilayer are standing with the N-N bond perpendicular to the surface, while in the second layer they are rather lying on the first monomer layer.  相似文献

Recently we reported noncovalent functionalization of nanotubes in an aqueous medium with ionic liquid-based surfactants, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (1) and 1-(12-mercaptododecyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (2), resulting in positively charged single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)-1,2 composites. Thiolation of SWNTs with 2 provides their self-assembly on gold as well as templating gold nanoparticles on SWNT sidewalls via a covalent -S-Au bond. In this investigation, we studied the electronic structure, intermolecular interactions, and packing within noncovalently thiolated SWNTs and also nanotube alignment in the bulk of SWNT-2 dried droplets and self-assembled submonolayers (SAMs) on gold by high-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HRXPS), C K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and polarization-modulated infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). HRXPS data confirmed the noncovalent nature of interactions within the nanocomposite of thiolated nanotubes. In PM-IRRAS spectra of SWNT SAMs on gold, the IR-active vibrational SWNT modes have been observed and identified. According to PM-IRRAS data, the hydrocarbon chains of 2 are oriented with less tilt angle to the bare gold normal in a SAM deposited from an SWNT-2 dispersion than those of 1 deposited from an SWNT-1 dispersion on the mercaptoethanesulfonic acid-primed gold. For both the dried SWNT-2 bulk and the SWNT-2 SAM on gold, the C K-edge NEXAFS spectra revealed the presence of CH-pi interactions between hydrocarbon chains of 2 and the pi electronic nanotube structure due to the highly resolved vibronic fine structure of carbon 1s --> R*/sigma*C-H series of states in the alkyl chain of 2. For the SWNT-2 bulk, the observed splitting and upshift of the SWNT pi* orbitals in the NEXAFS spectrum indicated the presence of pi-pi interactions. In the NEXAFS spectrum of the SWNT-2 SAM on gold, the upshifted values of the photon energy for R*/sigma*C-H transitions indicated close contact of 2 with nanotubes and with a gold surface. The angle-dependent NEXAFS for the SWNT-2 bulk showed that most of the molecules of 2 are aligned along the nanotubes, which are self-organized with orientation parallel to the substrate plane, whereas the NEXAFS for the SWNT-2 SAM revealed a more normal orientation of functionality 2 on gold compared with that in the SWNT-2 bulk.  相似文献

Mono- and multilayers of a novel amphiphilic hexapyridinium cation with six eicosyl chains (3) are spread at the air/water interface as well as on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). On water, the monolayer of 3 is investigated by recording surface pressure/area and surface potential/area isotherms, and by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). Self-organized tubular micelles with an internal edge-on orientation of molecules form at the air/water interface at low surface pressure whereas multilayers are present at high surface pressure, after a phase transition. Packing motifs suggesting a tubular arrangement of the constituting molecules were gleaned from atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers being transferred on HOPG at different surface pressures. These LB film structures are compared to the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3 formed via adsorption from a supersaturated solution, which is studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). On HOPG the SAM of 3 consists of nanorods with a highly ordered edge-on packing of the aromatic rings and an arrangement of alkyl chains which resembles the packing of molecules at the air/water interface at low surface pressure. Additional details of the molecular packing were gleaned from single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of the hexapyridinium model compound 2b, which possesses methyl instead of eicosyl residues.  相似文献

Ribonuclease A (RNase A) is immobilized on silver surfaces in oriented and random form via self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols. The immobilization process is characterized step-by-step using chemically selective near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) at the C, N, and S K-edges. Causes of imperfect immobilization are pinpointed, such as oxidation and partial desorption of the alkanethiol SAMs and incomplete coverage. The orientation of the protein layer manifests itself in an 18% polarization dependence of the NEXAFS signal from the N 1s to pi* transition of the peptide bond, which is not seen for a random orientation. The S 1s to C-S sigma* transition exhibits an even larger polarization dependence of 41%, which is reduced to 5% for a random orientation. A quantitative model is developed that explains the sign and magnitude of the polarization dependence at both edges. The results demonstrate that NEXAFS is able to characterize surface reactions during the immobilization of proteins and to provide insight into their orientations on surfaces.  相似文献

The molecular interaction of dihydroxo[5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)porphyrinato]-tin(IV) (SnTTBPP(OH)(2)), the structural order and growth of ultrathin films on Ag(100) have been studied by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy, i.e., X-ray photoemission (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS/XANES) spectroscopy. For the first time, monolayer adsorption of a metalloporphyrin with octahedral coordination of the metal center by two additional axial hydroxo ligands is investigated in a multi-technique study. The delicate balance of molecule-substrate interactions and intermolecular interactions leads to the formation of a densely-packed organic monolayer which is commensurate with the Ag(100) substrate. From NEXAFS linear dichroism an almost coplanar orientation of the porphyrin system is derived. XPS and NEXAFS clearly indicate that the axial hydroxo ligands are cleaved in monolayer films, i.e., upon adsorption to the Ag substrate. With increasing film thickness orientational order gets lost and leads to polycrystalline growth for thicker films as confirmed by scanning X-ray transmission microscopy (STXM).  相似文献

A statistical mechanical model that treats hydrocarbon self-assembled monolayer (SAM) chains as rigid rods is examined to interrogate the mechanisms involved in monolayer ordering. The statistical mechanical predictions are compared to fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of SAMs with different packing densities. The monolayer chain order is examined as a function of surface coverage, chain-surface interactions, and chain–chain interactions. Reasonable interaction potentials are deduced from ab initio electronic structure calculations of small model systems. It is found that the chain-surface interaction is the most important parameter in formation of flat-lying monolayer phases, while formation of standing phase monolayers is driven most importantly by increased density of molecules at the surface. A brief discussion of the utility and validity of the rigid rod treatment is given in light of the molecular dynamics results.  相似文献

The adsorption of terephthalic acid molecules [C(6)H(4)(COOH)(2)), TPA] on a single layer of graphene grown epitaxially on Ni(111) has been investigated by means of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) at room temperature. The assignment of the NEXAFS resonances was aided by ab initio calculations for the free TPA molecule. For coverages up to a monolayer the molecular plane of TPA adopts a parallel orientation with regard to the epitaxial graphene (EG) layer. Deprotonation of TPA molecules at one monolayer coverage can be excluded. For TPA multilayers, the molecular plane is tilted on average by approximately 45° with respect to the sample surface.  相似文献

Thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid) is a molecule with a large disulfide-containing base, a short alkyl chain with four CH2 units, and a carboxyl termination. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films ofthioctic acid adsorbed on Au(111) have been investigated with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine film quality, bonding, and morphology. Using standard preparation protocols for SAMs, that is, dissolving thioctic acid in ethanol and exposing gold to the solution, results in poor films. These films are highly disordered, contain a mixture of carboxyl and carboxylate terminations, have more than monolayer coverage, and exhibit unbound disulfide. Conversely, forming films by dissolving 1 mmol thioctic acid into 5% acetic acid in ethanol (as previously reported with carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols) forms ordered monolayers with small amounts of unbound sulfur. NEXAFS indicates tilted over endgroups with the carboxyl group normal on average 38 degrees from the surface normal. Slight angle-dependent intensity modulations in other features indicate alkyl chains statistically more upright than prostrate on the surface. Reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared (RA-FTIR) spectra indicate hydrogen bonding between neighboring molecules. In such well-formed monolayers, a stark reorientation occurs upon deprotonation of the endgroup by rinsing in a KOH solution. The carboxylate plane normal is now about 66 degrees from sample normal, a much more upright orientation. Data indicate this reorientation may also cause a more upright orientation to the alkyl portion of the molecules.  相似文献
