We study the quantum field theory of bosons on the torus and the orbifold. When the torus is in special moduli, the representations of the theory are equivalent to those of some rational conformal field theories. We show that there are parafermonic current algebras in ZN orbifold models.  相似文献

We construct noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants associated with abelian orbifold singularities by analyzing the instanton contributions to a six-dimensional topological gauge theory. The noncommutative deformation of this gauge theory localizes on noncommutative instantons which can be classified in terms of three-dimensional Young diagrams with a colouring of boxes according to the orbifold group. We construct a moduli space for these gauge field configurations which allows us to compute its virtual numbers via the counting of representations of a quiver with relations. The quiver encodes the instanton dynamics of the noncommutative gauge theory, and is associated to the geometry of the singularity via the generalized McKay correspondence. The index of BPS states which compute the noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants is realized via topological quantum mechanics based on the quiver data. We illustrate these constructions with several explicit examples, involving also higher rank Coulomb branch invariants and geometries with compact divisors, and connect our approach with other ones in the literature.  相似文献

We compute the elliptic genus for arbitrary two-dimensional N = 2 Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. This is used to search for possible mirror pairs of such models. We show that if two Landau-Ginzburg models are conjugate to each other in a certain sense, then to every orbifold of the first theory corresponds an orbifold of the second theory with the same elliptic genus (up to a sign) and with the roles of the chiral and anti-chiral rings interchanged. These orbifolds thus constitute a possible mirror pair. Furthermore, new pairs of conjugate models may be obtained by taking the product of old ones. We also give a sufficient (and possibly necessary) condition for two models to be conjugate, and show that it is satisfied by the mirror pairs proposed by one of the authors and Hübsch.  相似文献

In this paper we compute explicit formulas for the holonomy map for a gerbe with connection over an orbifold. We show that the holonomy descends to a transgression map in Deligne cohomology. We prove that this recovers both the inner local systems in Ruan’s theory of twisted orbifold cohomology [1] and the local system of Freed–Hopkins–Teleman in their work in twisted K-theory [2]. In the case in which the orbifold is simply a manifold we recover previous results of Gawȩdzki [3] and Brylinski[4].  相似文献

We consider the possibility that the unification of the electroweak interactions and the strong force arises from string theory, at energies significantly lower than the string scale. As a tool, an effective grand unified field theory in six dimensions is derived from an anisotropic orbifold compactification of the heterotic string. It is explicitly shown that all anomalies cancel in the model, though anomalous Abelian gauge symmetries are present locally at the boundary singularities. In the supersymmetric vacuum additional interactions arise from higher‐dimensional operators. We develop methods that relate the couplings of the effective theory to the location of the vacuum, and find that unbroken discrete symmetries play an important role for the phenomenology of orbifold models. An efficient algorithm for the calculation of the superpotential to arbitrary order is developed, based on symmetry arguments. We furthermore present a correspondence between bulk fields of the orbifold model in six dimensions, and the moduli fields that arise from compactifying four internal dimensions on a manifold with non‐trivial gauge background.  相似文献

We describe discrete symmetries of two-dimensional Yang–Mills theory with gauge group G associated with outer automorphisms of G, and their corresponding defects. We show that the gauge theory partition function with defects can be computed as a path integral over the space of twisted G-bundles and calculate it exactly. We argue that its weak-coupling limit computes the symplectic volume of the moduli space of flat twisted G-bundles on a surface. Using the defect network approach to generalised orbifolds, we gauge the discrete symmetry and construct the corresponding orbifold theory, which is again two-dimensional Yang–Mills theory but with gauge group given by an extension of G by outer automorphisms. With the help of the orbifold completion of the topological defect bicategory of two-dimensional Yang–Mills theory, we describe the reverse orbifold using a Wilson line defect for the discrete gauge symmetry. We present our results using two complementary approaches: in the lattice regularisation of the path integral, and in the functorial approach to area-dependent quantum field theories with defects via regularised Frobenius algebras.

 We use equivariant methods to define and study the orbifold K-theory of an orbifold X. Adapting techniques from equivariant K-theory, we construct a Chern character and exhibit a multiplicative decomposition for K * orb (X)⊗ℚ, in particular showing that it is additively isomorphic to the orbifold cohomology of X. A number of examples are provided. We then use the theory of projective representations to define the notion of twisted orbifold K–theory in the presence of discrete torsion. An explicit expression for this is obtained in the case of a global quotient. We provide an M theory interpretation of the recently discovered N=8 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with SO(4) gauge symmetry. The theory is argued to describe two membranes moving in the orbifold R8/Z2. At level k=1 and k=2, the classical moduli space M coincides with the infrared moduli space of SO(4) and SO(5) super Yang-Mills theory, respectively. For higher Chern-Simons level, the moduli space is a quotient of M. At a generic point in the moduli space, the massive spectrum is proportional to the area of the triangle formed by the two membranes and the orbifold fixed point.  相似文献

We point out that SO(2N(c)) gauge theory with N(f) fundamental Dirac fermions does not have a sign problem at finite baryon number chemical potential μ(B). One can thus use lattice Monte Carlo simulations to study this theory at finite density. The absence of a sign problem in the SO(2N(c)) theory is particularly interesting because a wide class of observables in the SO(2N(c)) theory coincide with observables in QCD in the large N(c) limit, as we show using the technique of large N(c) orbifold equivalence. We argue that the orbifold equivalence between the two theories continues to hold at finite μ(B) provided one adds appropriate deformation terms to the SO(2N(c)) theory. This opens up the prospect of learning about QCD at finite μ(B) using lattice studies of the SO(2N(c)) theory.  相似文献

We study D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on global orbifolds of Type II string theory with vanishing H-flux using methods of equivariant K-theory and K-homology. We illustrate how Bredon equivariant cohomology naturally realizes stringy orbifold cohomology. We emphasize its role as the correct cohomological tool which captures known features of the low-energy effective field theory, and which provides new consistency conditions for fractional D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on orbifolds. We use an equivariant Chern character from equivariant K-theory to Bredon cohomology to define new Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes which generalize previous examples. We propose a definition for groups of differential characters associated to equivariant K-theory. We derive a Dirac quantization rule for Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and study flat Ramond-Ramond potentials on orbifolds.  相似文献

Chern-Simons gauge theory is formulated on three-dimensional Z2 orbifolds. The locus of singular points on a given orbifold is equivalent to a link of Wilson lines. This allows one to reduce any correlation function on orbifolds to a sum of more complicated correlation functions in the simpler theory on manifolds. Chern-Simons theory on manifolds is known to be related to two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT) on closed-string surfaces; here it is shown that the theory on orbifolds is related to 2D CFT of unoriented closed- and open-string models, i.e. to worldsheet orbifold models. In particular, the boundary components of the worldsheet correspond to the components of the singular locus in the 3D orbifold. This correspondence leads to a simple identification of the open-string spectra, including their Chan-Paton degeneration, in terms of fusing Wilson lines in the corresponding Chern-Simons theory. The correspondence is studied in detail, and some exactly solvable examples are presented. Some of these examples indicate that it is natural to think of the orbifold group Z2 as a part of the gauge group of the Chern-Simons theory, thus generalizing the standard definition of gauge theories.  相似文献

We propose a new way of obtaining slow-roll inflation in the context of higher dimensional models motivated by string and M theory. In our model, all extra spatial dimensions are orbifolded. The initial conditions are taken to be a hot dense bulk brane gas which drives an initial phase of isotropic bulk expansion. This phase ends when a weak potential between the orbifold fixed planes begins to dominate. For a wide class of potentials, a period during which the bulk dimensions decrease sufficiently slowly to lead to slow-roll inflation of the three dimensions parallel to the orbifold fixed planes will result. Once the separation between the orbifold fixed planes becomes of the string scale, a repulsive potential due to string effects takes over and leads to a stabilization of the radion modes. The conversion of bulk branes into radiation during the phase of bulk contraction leads to reheating.  相似文献

We show that every bad orbifold vector bundle can be realized as the restriction of a good orbifold vector bundle to a suborbifold of the base space. We give an explicit construction of this result in which the Chen–Ruan orbifold cohomologies of the two base spaces are isomorphic (as additive groups). This construction is used to indicate an extension of the Chern–Weil construction of characteristic classes to bad orbifold vector bundles. In particular, we apply this construction to the orbifold Euler class and demonstrate that it acts as an obstruction to the existence of nonvanishing sections.  相似文献

In many applications of conformal field theory one encounters twisted conformal fields, i.e. fields which have branch cut singularities on the relevant Riemann surfaces. We present a geometrical framework describing twisted conformal fields on Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus which is alternative to the standard method of coverings. We further illustrate the theory of twisted Grassmannians and its relation with the representation theory of the twisted oscillator algebras. As an application of the above, we expound an operator formalism for orbifold strings.  相似文献

We investigate orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string, addressing in detail their construction, classification and phenomenological potential. We present a strategy to search for models resembling the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) in ℤ6‐II orbifold compactifications. We find several MSSM candidates with the gauge group and the exact spectrum of the MSSM, and supersymmetric vacua below the compactification scale. They also exhibit the following realistic features: R‐parity, seesaw suppressed neutrino masses, and intermediate scale of supersymmetry breakdown. In addition, we find that similar models also exist in other ℤN orbifolds and in the SO(32) heterotic theory.  相似文献

We consider five-dimensional gauge theories where all fields propagate in the bulk and the fifth direction is compactified on the orbifold S1/Z2, and where the fifth components of the gauge bosons play the role of the standard model Higgs boson (gauge-Higgs unification). The gauge symmetry breaking is realized through the appropriate orbifold boundary conditions and through the Hosotani mechanism. We show that for any such theory (with neither brane gauge kinetic terms nor anomalous gauge-group factors) the assumption that the low-energy vector-boson spectrum consists of the W(+/-), Z, and gamma only, is inconsistent with the experimental requirements sin2thetaW approximately 1/4 and rho identical with mW2/(mZ2 cos2theta w) = 1.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that discrete torsion phases in string orbifold partition functions, and membrane discrete torsion phases, are topological actions on the simplicial manifolds associated to orbifold group actions. For this purpose, we introduce an integration theory of smooth Deligne cohomology on a general simplicial manifold, and prove that the integration induces a well-defined paring between the smooth Deligne cohomology and the singular cycles.  相似文献
