Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films consist of microdroplets of a liquid crystal dispersed in a polymer matrix. Their applications are based on the electrically controllable light scattering properties of the liquid crystal droplets. The effects of temperature on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films have been rarely investigated. In this work, we studied the light transmission on varying the temperature and frequency. It was observed that the transmission at a fixed voltage decreased with increasing temperature above 43°C, independent of frequency. We examined possible origins of this unusual dependence of the transmission on the temperature. It was concluded that conductivity effects due to free ions newly created at high temperatures could be responsible for the unusual behaviour observed.  相似文献

We report on the structures and electro‐optical properties of epoxy/acrylic polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal (PDLC) films. A thermal stimulated current (TSC) analysis was used to investigate the physical structures of PDLC. In the TSC spectrum of PDLC, three relaxation peaks were observed: the glass transition of the liquid crystal, the glass transition of the polymer matrix, and the ρ transition. The ρ transition represents the discharge behavior of space charges, and its intensity increased as the curing time and content of the curing agent dicyandiamide (DICY) increased. The pre‐UV‐cured films with different DICY contents were thermally cured at 130 °C for various periods. The electro‐optical properties of PDLC, such as the contrast ratio and switching voltage, increased as the curing time of DICY, the content of DICY, or both increased. As the ambient temperature increased from 10 to 40 °C, the contrast ratio and switching voltage of PDLC gradually decreased. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ABSTRACT

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by photochemical polymerisation with a series of (meth)acrylate monomers. The effects of monomer structure on the morphology of polymer networks in the PDLC films were studied. The acrylate monomers without sidegroup chain formed uniform polymer networks. The methacrylate monomers with methyl as their sidegroup chains formed lace-like networks. The size of the LC droplets increased with increasing the length of the flexible chain of both methacrylate and acrylate monomers. Meanwhile, the effects of the morphology of the polymer network on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were also investigated.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which based on the acrylate and the thiol monomers were first prepared by ultraviolet-initiated polymerisation. The electro-optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were systematically investigated. The functionality of thiol monomers and their feed ratio showed great influence on the properties of the fabricated PDLC films because of the existence of competition between thiol–acrylate reaction and acrylate monomer polymerisation reaction. This made the polymer network and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films easily tunable by the introduction of the thiol monomers. When added four-functional thiol monomer PETMP with appropriate concentration into the PDLC system, lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) films with LC content as low as 40 wt% were prepared, and the electro‐optical properties were carefully investigated. To accomplish this, different (meth)acrylate copolymerizaiton monomers have been used. The electro‐optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were strongly influenced by the chemical structure of copolymerization monomers (hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA), glycidyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate) and their feed ratio. Lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved when the PDLC films showed a morphology with suitably LC domain size. At high HPMA content, a thin polymer film was formed on the surface of PDLC samples, which is beneficial to decrease the total LC content in PDLC devices. The application of high intensity electric fields to polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films can induce changes in their electro-optical properties and morphology. In particular, a quasilinear electro-optical response to an external electric field can be achieved if an internal built-in d.c. field is induced. In this work, we show how the liquid crystal/polymer weight ratio influences the electro-optical response of 'charged' PDLCs, i.e. of PDLC films after the application of a high intensity electric field. We observed that a quasilinear electro-optical response can be achieved in a well determined range of composition. Larger liquid crystal concentrations are unable to maintain the built-in field, while PDLCs with lower liquid crystal loadings do not allow the onset of a built-in d.c. field.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared from thermal polymerisation-induced phase separation in heat-curable monomers/nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. For PDLCs with a certain amount of LCs, the microstructure and the refractive index of polymer networks could be influenced by the relative content of epoxy monomers, owing to their different chemical structures. The effect of these factors on the electro-optic properties of films was also investigated.  相似文献

The electro-optical properties and memory effects are important characters of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) devices. Molecular weight of polymer matrix influences the morphology of liquid crystal droplets in PDLC film and the performance of PDLC devices. In this letter, PDLC films were doped with a small amount of chain transfer agent (CTA), in order to control the molecular weight of polymer matrix. It is observed that the addition of CTA induces a reduction of threshold voltage. In addition, the effect of molecular weight on memory effects of PDLC devices was also discussed. It is found that the entanglement between polymer and liquid crystal molecule increased with the molecular weight, which reduces the memory effect.  相似文献

Electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which have reversed morphology are investigated. Highly transparent memory states, for which transmittances exceed more than 80 per cent, are observed in these PDLC films. The saturation voltage V90 can be decreased by a PTF (a phase transition with a field) operation and becomes 10 times lower than that without PTF operation. A contrast ratio of more than 600 is obtained in the memory state of a thick PDLC film.  相似文献

Three novel techniques of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film preparation have been proposed to obtain/induce systematically varying manifold properties in a single device. These three techniques were used to prepare ‘wedge-shaped’, ‘multi-channelled’ and ‘grating type’ PDLC films. Arrangement and configuration of liquid crystal (LC) microstructures inside these PDLC films, which were conveniently divided into different zones, have been investigated using a polarising optical microscope (POM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). POM images indicate a predominant bipolar structure in all zones of different types of PDLC films but with varying size and density. Further, the electro-optical (EO) properties of PDLC films for different zones have different morphological characteristics as indicated (observed) in POM and SEM images and were dependent on LC droplet shape, size and distribution. Also different zones show different absorbance/transmittance characteristics in the visible range. Thus, our study proposes a single device with manifold properties. Also, the desired properties can be obtained by selecting the suitable zone from the PDLC composite film.  相似文献

In general this reduction of the cell gap improves the electro-optic properties of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) in reflective microdisplays. At the interface between the PDLC film and the silicon backplane or cover glass, the LC molecules have a different alignment from those in the droplets in the interior of the PDLC film. This is shown by microscopic observations and the temperature dependency of the brightness and capacitance of the displays. The influence of this alignment effect increases for smaller cell gaps and has an impact on the properties of the PDLC. During and after the filling of the displays, a compression and expansion of the cell gap takes place, respectively. If the curing of the PDLC takes place before the expansion of the cell gap has stopped, transparent areas in the PDLC film may occur some time after curing. This effect is caused by the expansion of the cell gap after curing resulting in the vertical alignment of LC molecules. This can be concluded from microscopic observations and from measurements of the refractive index and cell gap.  相似文献

Iniferter polymerization was employed to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films and an additional photoinitiator was introduced to induce the phase separation of polymer matrices themselves on the process of preparing the PDLC. The effect of the polymerization kinetics and the resultant microphase-separated structures of polymer matrices on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were studied. It was found that the bigger length scale of phase separation of polymer matrices induced strong light-scattering resulting in low ON-state transmittance. And faster polymerization kinetic induced higher threshold and saturation voltages.  相似文献

The effects of fluorinated acrylate monomers on the electro-optical and morphological properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are reported. The partial fluorination of host polymer matrices resulted in improved optical properties and better defined morphologies. An enhancement in contrast ratio was observed for fluorinated systems containing trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA) and hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate (HFIPA). Conversely, the incorporation of methyl acrylate (MA), a chemically similar non-fluorinated acrylate, resulted in no appreciable change in contrast ratio and an increase in relaxation time. Scanning electron microscopy morphological studies were conducted to understand further the influence of fluorinated monomers in PDLC systems.  相似文献
