In solving certain optimization problems, the corresponding Lagrangian dual problem is often solved simply because in these problems the dual problem is easier to solve than the original primal problem. Another reason for their solution is the implication of the weak duality theorem which suggests that under certain conditions the optimal dual function value is smaller than or equal to the optimal primal objective value. The dual problem is a special case of a bilevel programming problem involving Lagrange multipliers as upper-level variables and decision variables as lower-level variables. Another interesting aspect of dual problems is that both lower and upper-level optimization problems involve only box constraints and no other equality of inequality constraints. In this paper, we propose a coevolutionary dual optimization (CEDO) algorithm for co-evolving two populations—one involving Lagrange multipliers and other involving decision variables—to find the dual solution. On 11 test problems taken from the optimization literature, we demonstrate the efficacy of CEDO algorithm by comparing it with a couple of nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and a couple of previously suggested coevolutionary algorithms. The performance of CEDO algorithm is also compared with two classical methods involving nonsmooth (bundle) optimization methods. As a by-product, we analyze the test problems to find their associated duality gap and classify them into three categories having zero, finite or infinite duality gaps. The development of a coevolutionary approach, revealing the presence or absence of duality gap in a number of commonly-used test problems, and efficacy of the proposed coevolutionary algorithm compared to usual nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and other existing coevolutionary approaches remain as the hallmark of the current study.  相似文献

In a competitive coevolutionary algorithm, the competition strategy, selecting opposing individuals, has a great influence on the performance of the algorithm. Therefore, a good competition strategy is crucial for an effective and efficient competitive coevolutionary algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new competition strategy called tournament competition. We investigate its characteristics and merits when applied to adversarial problems. To verify the performance of the new strategy, we first classify adversarial problems into two types: solution-test problems and game problems. We apply the strategy to both types. A set of experiments compares our strategy to several existing competition strategies and analyzes several aspects such as solution quality, evolution speed, and coevolutionary balance. The experimental results indicate that some of the existing competition strategies give different patterns according to problem types. The results also support that the proposed tournament strategy has the potential for finding good solutions, regardless of problem types.  相似文献

Robustness is about reducing the feasible set of a given nominal optimization problem by cutting ??risky?? solutions away. To this end, the most popular approach in the literature is to extend the nominal model with a polynomial number of additional variables and constraints, so as to obtain its robust counterpart. Robustness can also be enforced by adding a possibly exponential family of cutting planes, which typically leads to an exponential formulation where cuts have to be generated at run time. Both approaches have pros and cons, and it is not clear which is the best one when approaching a specific problem. In this paper we computationally compare the two options on some prototype problems with different characteristics. We first address robust optimization à la Bertsimas and Sim for linear programs, and show through computational experiments that a considerable speedup (up to 2 orders of magnitude) can be achieved by exploiting a dynamic cut generation scheme. For integer linear problems, instead, the compact formulation exhibits a typically better performance. We then move to a probabilistic setting and introduce the uncertain set covering problem where each column has a certain probability of disappearing, and each row has to be covered with high probability. A related uncertain graph connectivity problem is also investigated, where edges have a certain probability of failure. For both problems, compact ILP models and cutting plane solution schemes are presented and compared through extensive computational tests. The outcome is that a compact ILP formulation (if available) can be preferable because it allows for a better use of the rich arsenal of preprocessing/cut generation tools available in modern ILP solvers. For the cases where such a compact ILP formulation is not available, as in the uncertain connectivity problem, we propose a restart solution strategy and computationally show its practical effectiveness.  相似文献

In this paper, it proposes a multi-population interactive coevolutionary algorithm for the flexible job shop scheduling problems. In the proposed algorithm, both the ant colony optimization and genetic algorithm with different configurations were applied to evolve each population independently. By the interaction, competition and sharing mechanism among populations, the computing resource is utilized more efficiently, and the quality of populations is improved effectively. The performance of our proposed approach was evaluated by a lot of benchmark instances taken from literature. The experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is a feasible and effective approach for the flexible job shop scheduling problem.  相似文献

This paper is a follow-up to the author’s previous paper on convex optimization. In that paper we began the process of adjusting greedy-type algorithms from nonlinear approximation for finding sparse solutions of convex optimization problems. We modified there the three most popular greedy algorithms in nonlinear approximation in Banach spaces-Weak Chebyshev Greedy Algorithm, Weak Greedy Algorithm with Free Relaxation, and Weak Relaxed Greedy Algorithm-for solving convex optimization problems. We continue to study sparse approximate solutions to convex optimization problems. It is known that in many engineering applications researchers are interested in an approximate solution of an optimization problem as a linear combination of elements from a given system of elements. There is an increasing interest in building such sparse approximate solutions using different greedy-type algorithms. In this paper we concentrate on greedy algorithms that provide expansions, which means that the approximant at the mth iteration is equal to the sum of the approximant from the previous, (m ? 1)th, iteration and one element from the dictionary with an appropriate coefficient. The problem of greedy expansions of elements of a Banach space is well studied in nonlinear approximation theory. At first glance the setting of a problem of expansion of a given element and the setting of the problem of expansion in an optimization problem are very different. However, it turns out that the same technique can be used for solving both problems. We show how the technique developed in nonlinear approximation theory, in particular, the greedy expansions technique, can be adjusted for finding a sparse solution of an optimization problem given by an expansion with respect to a given dictionary.  相似文献

The robust optimization methodology is known as a popular method dealing with optimization problems with uncertain data and hard constraints. This methodology has been applied so far to various convex conic optimization problems where only their inequality constraints are subject to uncertainty. In this paper, the robust optimization methodology is applied to the general nonlinear programming (NLP) problem involving both uncertain inequality and equality constraints. The uncertainty set is defined by conic representable sets, the proposed uncertainty set is general enough to include many uncertainty sets, which have been used in literature, as special cases. The robust counterpart (RC) of the general NLP problem is approximated under this uncertainty set. It is shown that the resulting approximate RC of the general NLP problem is valid in a small neighborhood of the nominal value. Furthermore a rather general class of programming problems is posed that the robust counterparts of its problems can be derived exactly under the proposed uncertainty set. Our results show the applicability of robust optimization to a wider area of real applications and theoretical problems with more general uncertainty sets than those considered so far. The resulting robust counterparts which are traditional optimization problems make it possible to use existing algorithms of mathematical optimization to solve more complicated and general robust optimization problems.  相似文献

Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) is a portfolio evaluation function having appealing features such as sub-additivity and convexity. Although the CVaR function is nondifferentiable, scenario-based CVaR minimization problems can be reformulated as linear programs (LPs) that afford solutions via widely-used commercial softwares. However, finding solutions through LP formulations for problems having many financial instruments and a large number of price scenarios can be time-consuming as the dimension of the problem greatly increases. In this paper, we propose a two-phase approach that is suitable for solving CVaR minimization problems having a large number of price scenarios. In the first phase, conventional differentiable optimization techniques are used while circumventing nondifferentiable points, and in the second phase, we employ a theoretically convergent, variable target value nondifferentiable optimization technique. The resultant two-phase procedure guarantees infinite convergence to optimality. As an optional third phase, we additionally perform a switchover to a simplex solver starting with a crash basis obtained from the second phase when finite convergence to an exact optimum is desired. This three phase procedure substantially reduces the effort required in comparison with the direct use of a commercial stand-alone simplex solver (CPLEX 9.0). Moreover, the two-phase method provides highly-accurate near-optimal solutions with a significantly improved performance over the interior point barrier implementation of CPLEX 9.0 as well, especially when the number of scenarios is large. We also provide some benchmarking results on using an alternative popular proximal bundle nondifferentiable optimization technique.  相似文献

The field of cluster analysis is primarily concerned with the partitioning of data points into different clusters so as to optimize a certain criterion. Rapid advances in technology have made it possible to address clustering problems via optimization theory. In this paper, we present a global optimization algorithm to solve the fuzzy clustering problem, where each data point is to be assigned to (possibly) several clusters, with a membership grade assigned to each data point that reflects the likelihood of the data point belonging to that cluster. The fuzzy clustering problem is formulated as a nonlinear program, for which a tight linear programming relaxation is constructed via the Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) in concert with additional valid inequalities. This construct is embedded within a specialized branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm to solve the problem to global optimality. Computational experience is reported using several standard data sets from the literature as well as using synthetically generated larger problem instances. The results validate the robustness of the proposed algorithmic procedure and exhibit its dominance over the popular fuzzy c-means algorithmic technique and the commercial global optimizer BARON.  相似文献

In this paper, we address continuous, integer and combinatorial k-sum optimization problems. We analyze different formulations of this problem that allow to solve it through the minimization of a relatively small number of minisum optimization problems. This approach provides a general tool for solving a variety of k-sum optimization problems and at the same time, improves the complexity bounds of many ad-hoc algorithms previously reported in the literature for particular versions of this problem. Moreover, the results developed for k-sum optimization have been extended to the more general case of the convex ordered median problem, improving upon existing solution approaches.  相似文献

This paper deals with the well-posedness property in the setting of set optimization problems. By using a notion of well-posed set optimization problem due to Zhang et al. (2009) [18] and a scalarization process, we characterize this property through the well-posedness, in the Tykhonov sense, of a family of scalar optimization problems and we show that certain quasiconvex set optimization problems are well-posed. Our approach is based just on a weak boundedness assumption, called cone properness, that is unavoidable to obtain a meaningful set optimization problem.  相似文献

Recursive McCormick relaxations are among the most popular convexification techniques for binary polynomial optimization. It is well-understood that both the quality and the size of these relaxations depend on the recursive sequence and finding an optimal sequence amounts to solving a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. We prove that any recursive McCormick relaxation is implied by the extended flower relaxation, a linear programming relaxation, which for binary polynomial optimization problems with fixed degree can be solved in strongly polynomial time.  相似文献

Robust design optimization (RDO) is a field of optimization in which certain measure of robustness is sought against uncertainty. Unlike conventional optimization, the number of function evaluations in RDO is significantly more which often renders it time consuming and computationally cumbersome. This paper presents two new methods for solving the RDO problems. The proposed methods couple differential evolution algorithm (DEA) with polynomial correlated function expansion (PCFE). While DEA is utilized for solving the optimization problem, PCFE is utilized for calculating the statistical moments. Three examples have been presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed approaches. Results obtained indicate that the proposed approaches provide accurate and computationally efficient estimates of the RDO problems. Moreover, the proposed approaches outperforms popular RDO techniques such as tensor product quadrature, Taylor’s series and Kriging. Finally, the proposed approaches have been utilized for robust hydroelectric flow optimization, demonstrating its capability in solving large scale problems.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the use of low-discrepancy sequences to generate an initial population for population-based optimization algorithms. Previous studies have found that low-discrepancy sequences generally improve the performance of a population-based optimization algorithm. However, these studies generally have some major drawbacks like using a small set of biased problems and ignoring the use of non-parametric statistical tests. To address these shortcomings, we have used 19 functions (5 of them quasi-real-world problems), two popular low-discrepancy sequences and two well-known population-based optimization methods. According to our results, there is no evidence that using low-discrepancy sequences improves the performance of population-based search methods.  相似文献

The field of cluster analysis is primarily concerned with the sorting of data points into different clusters so as to optimize a certain criterion. Rapid advances in technology have made it possible to address clustering problems via optimization theory. In this paper, we present a global optimization algorithm to solve the hard clustering problem, where each data point is to be assigned to exactly one cluster. The hard clustering problem is formulated as a nonlinear program, for which a tight linear programming relaxation is constructed via the Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) in concert with additional valid inequalities that serve to defeat the inherent symmetry in the problem. This construct is embedded within a specialized branch-and-bound algorithm to solve the problem to global optimality. Pertinent implementation issues that can enhance the efficiency of the branch-and-bound algorithm are also discussed. Computational experience is reported using several standard data sets found in the literature as well as using synthetically generated larger problem instances. The results validate the robustness of the proposed algorithmic procedure and exhibit its dominance over the popular k-means clustering technique. Finally, a heuristic procedure to obtain a good quality solution at a relative ease of computational effort is also described.  相似文献

When handling combinatorial optimization problems, we try to get the optimal arrangement of discrete entities so that the requirements and the constraints are satisfied. These problems become more and more important in various industrial and academic fields. So, over the past years, several techniques have been proposed to solve them. In this paper, we are interested in the single machine scheduling problem with Sequence-Dependent Setup Times, which can be solved through different approaches. We present a hybrid algorithm which combines Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure and Differential Evolution for tackling this problem. Our algorithm is tested on benchmark instances from the literature. The computational experiments prove the efficiency of this algorithm.

In this paper, we are concerned with the development of parallel algorithms for solving some classes of nonconvex optimization problems. We present an introductory survey of parallel algorithms that have been used to solve structured problems (partially separable, and large-scale block structured problems), and algorithms based on parallel local searches for solving general nonconvex problems. Indefinite quadratic programming posynomial optimization, and the general global concave minimization problem can be solved using these approaches. In addition, for the minimum concave cost network flow problem, we are going to present new parallel search algorithms for large-scale problems. Computational results of an efficient implementation on a multi-transputer system will be presented.  相似文献

Polynomial optimization encompasses a very rich class of problems in which both the objective and constraints can be written in terms of polynomials on the decision variables. There is a well established body of research on quadratic polynomial optimization problems based on reformulations of the original problem as a conic program over the cone of completely positive matrices, or its conic dual, the cone of copositive matrices. As a result of this reformulation approach, novel solution schemes for quadratic polynomial optimization problems have been designed by drawing on conic programming tools, and the extensively studied cones of completely positive and of copositive matrices. In particular, this approach has been applied to solve key combinatorial optimization problems. Along this line of research, we consider polynomial optimization problems that are not necessarily quadratic. For this purpose, we use a natural extension of the cone of completely positive matrices; namely, the cone of completely positive tensors. We provide a general characterization of the class of polynomial optimization problems that can be formulated as a conic program over the cone of completely positive tensors. As a consequence of this characterization, it follows that recent related results for quadratic problems can be further strengthened and generalized to higher order polynomial optimization problems. Also, we show that the conditions underlying the characterization are conceptually the same, regardless of the degree of the polynomials defining the problem. To illustrate our results, we discuss in further detail special and relevant instances of polynomial optimization problems.  相似文献
