The results of laboratory observations of the deformation of deep water gravity waves leading to wave breaking are reported. The specially developed visualization technique which was used is described. A preliminary analysis of the results has led to similar conclusions than recently developed theories. As a main fact, the observed wave breaking appears as the result of, first, a modulational instability which causes the local wave steepness to approach a maximum and, second, a rapidly growing instability leading directly to the breaking.List of symbols L total wave length - H total wave height - crest elevation above still water level - trough depression below still water level - wave steepness =H/L - crest steepness =/L - trough steepness =/L - F 1 forward horizontal length from zero-upcross point (A) to wave crest - F 2 backward horizontal length from wave crest to zero-downcross point (B) - crest front steepness =/F 1 - crest rear steepness =/F 2 - vertical asymmetry factor=F 2/F 1 (describing the wave asymmetry with respect to a vertical axis through the wave crest) - µ horizontal asymmetry factor=/H (describing the wave asymmetry with respect to a horizontal axis: SWL) - T 0 wavemaker period - L 0 theoretical wave length of a small amplitude sinusoïdal wave generated at T inf0 sup–1 frequency - 0 average wave height  相似文献

A large number of studies have been devoted to the unsteady flow of a viscid incompressible fluid past a lattice of thin profiles and the determination of the resulting aerodynamic forces and moments. For example, in the particular case of the motion of a lattice with stagger with zero phase shift of the oscillations between neighboring profiles, Haskind [1] determined the unsteady lift force and moment. Popescu [2] suggested expressions for the force and moment in the case when =0 and =0, using the method of conformal mapping. Samoilovich [3] obtained equations for the unsteady lift force and moment by the method of the acceleration potential for phase shift =0 and = of the oscillations between neighboring profiles. Musatov [4] used an electronic digital computer to calculate the overall unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a grid by the vortex method, taking into account the amplitude of the oscillations and the initial circulation for =m (m1). Gorelov [5] determined the coefficients of the over-all unsteady aerodynamic force and moment of a profile in a lattice with the stagger and any value of =m. He used a method based on the unsteady flow past an isolated profile with subsequent account for the interference of the profiles in the lattice. In the following we find general expressions for the unsteady lift force and moment acting on a lattice moving in an incompressible fluid with the constant velocity U. These formulas generalize the known formulas for the isolated profile [6]. The profiles of a staggered grid (Section 1) are considered to be thin and slightly curved, and perform oscillations with a phase shift of the oscillations between neighboring profiles. The method of separation of singularities is used to obtain the solution in closed form. The coefficients of the expansion of the complex velocity in a series in the derivatives of a function are calculated. An integral equation relative to the unknown tangential velocity component in the wake is derived (Section 2), and its analytic solution is given (Section 3). For =0 the solution coincides with the solution obtained earlier in [7]. Expressions are obtained for the forces and moments (Section 4) in the form of four terms. The first two terms determine the force and moment for motion with constant circulation, and the last two determine these characteristics for motion with variable circulation. The suction force acting at the leading edges of the profiles is found in a general form. Particular cases of closely and widely spaced lattices are considered. Computational results are presented.  相似文献

An optical technique was used to study the dispersion of 50 m, 90 m and 150 m droplets downstream of a source located in the center of a vertical pipe through which turbulent air is flowing. A turbulent dispersion coefficient, P, and a mean-square of the fluctuations in the turbulent velocity, v p 2 , are determined from the change of the measured mean-square displacement of the droplets over the pipe cross section with time. The interesting aspect of the experiments is that they explored conditions where the inertia of the particles is believed to be a much more important effect than that of the crossing of trajectories associated with the inequality of the average velocities of the particles and the fluid.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear viscoelastic properties were examined for a 50 wt% suspension of spherical silica particles (with radius of 40 nm) in a viscous medium, 2.27/1 (wt/wt) ethylene glycol/glycerol mixture. The effective volume fraction of the particles evaluated from zero-shear viscosities of the suspension and medium was 0.53. At a quiescent state the particles had a liquid-like, isotropic spatial distribution in the medium. Dynamic moduli G* obtained for small oscillatory strain (in the linear viscoelastic regime) exhibited a relaxation process that reflected the equilibrium Brownian motion of those particles. In the stress relaxation experiments, the linear relaxation modulus G(t) was obtained for small step strain (0.2) while the nonlinear relaxation modulus G(t, ) characterizing strong stress damping behavior was obtained for large (>0.2). G(t, ) obeyed the time-strain separability at long time scales, and the damping function h() (–G(t, )/G(t)) was determined. Steady flow measurements revealed shear-thinning of the steady state viscosity () for small shear rates (< –1; = linear viscoelastic relaxation time) and shear-thickening for larger (>–1). Corresponding changes were observed also for the viscosity growth and decay functions on start up and cessation of flow, + (t, ) and (t, ). In the shear-thinning regime, the and dependence of +(t,) and (t,) as well as the dependence of () were well described by a BKZ-type constitutive equation using the G(t) and h() data. On the other hand, this equation completely failed in describing the behavior in the shear-thickening regime. These applicabilities of the BKZ equation were utilized to discuss the shearthinning and shear-thickening mechanisms in relation to shear effects on the structure (spatial distribution) and motion of the suspended particles.Dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dale S. It is proposed to investigate the stability of a plane axisymmetric flow with an angular velocity profile (r) such that the angular velocity is constant when r < rO – L and r > rO + L but varies monotonically from 1 to 2 near the point rO, the thickness of the transition zone being small L rO, whereas the change in velocity is not small ¦21¦ 2, 1. Obviously, as L O short-wave disturbances with respect to the azimuthal coordinate (k=m/rO 1/rO) will be unstable with a growth rate-close to the Kelvin—Helmholtz growth rate. In the case L=O (i.e., for a profile with a shear-discontinuity) we find the instability growth rate O and show that where the thickness of the discontinuity L is finite (but small) the growth rate does not differ from O up to terms proportional to kL 1 and 1/m 1. Using this example it is possible to investigate the effect of rotation on the flow stability. It is important to note that stabilization (or destabilization) of the flow in question by rotation occurs only for three-dimensional or axisymmetric perturbations.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 111–114, January–February, 1985.  相似文献

The time dependent differential equation for the local wire temperature of a constant temperature anemometer is solved by a perturbation method in case of a harmonically changing heat transfer coefficient. The time dependent power supply to the wire follows from the condition of constant mean temperature imposed by the anemometer circuit. The influence of thin supporting wires, or copper-plated wire ends, is evaluated also. The propagation and reflection of one-dimensional plane unsteady waves and pulses in a mixture of a fluid with two-phase bubbles containing evaporating drops is investigated. A significant effect of unsteady evaporation of the drops in the zone ahead of the shock wave on the wave propagation is demonstrated. The evaporation of the drops results in a pressure increase ahead of the wave and the shock wave as it were climbs to increasing pressure level. In contrast to bubbly fluids with single-phase bubbles, in a fluid with two-phase bubbles, at a fixed phase volume fraction, a decrease in bubble size results in an increase rather than a decrease of the oscillation amplitude. The wave reflection from a solid wall is essentially nonlinear and the maximum pressure attained at the wall is several times greater than the incident-wave intensity.  相似文献

Various aspects of the problem of intense blowing through the surface of bodies have, been theoretically studied by a number of authors, within the framework of inviscid flow theory. A detailed bibliography on this topic is given, e.g., in [1, 2]. The well-known approaches to solution of this problem have a limited area of application. For example, asymptotic methods can be used for hypersonic flow regimes only at relatively low levels of the blown gas momentum ( = 2 = ovo 2/ V 2 1). The same limitation applies to the numerical method of straight lines [2]. The forward Eulerian calculation schemes [3, 4] smear the contact discontinuity severely, and cannot handle the case where the blown gas and the gas in the incident flow have different thermodynamic properties (o ). This paper presents results of a numerical investigation of supersonic flow over two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies with intense blowing on the forward surface, performed using a time-dependent finite-difference method [5] with an explicit definition of the contact interface between the two cases. The calculations encompass a family of elliptic cylinders with semiaxis ratio 0.5 4, a flat-face cylinder, and a flat plate with rounding near the midsection, with variations in the blowing law, the incident flow Mach number M (3 M 10), the adiabatic indices, and the blowing parameter 0 0.5.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 117–124, January–February, 1977.In conclusion, the authors thank T. We prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions of the Neumann problem for the quasilinear parabolic equation uta(u, Du), where a(z,)=f(z,), and f is a convex function of with linear growth as ||||, satisfying other additional assumptions. In particular, this class includes the case where f(z,)=(z)(), >0, and is a convex function with linear growth as ||||.  相似文献

The dynamics of the structure of a liquid layer structure (with microbubbles of a free gas) behind a rarefaction wave front is studied numerically using the two-phase Iordansky–Kogarko–van Wijngaarden model and the frozen mass-velocity field model. An analysis of the initial stage of cavitation by the Iordansky–Kogarko–van Wijngaarden model showed that tensile stresses behind the rarefaction wave front relax quickly and the mass-velocity field in the cavitation zone turns out to be frozen. This effect is used to describe the late stage of the development of the cavitation zone. These models were combined to study the formation of cavitating spalls in a free-surface liquid under shock-wave loading.  相似文献

The scattering of an SH-wave by a discontinuity in mass-loading on a semi-infinite elastic medium is investigated theoretically. The incident wave is either a plane body wave or a plane SH-surface wave. The problem is reduced to a Wiener-Hopf problem for the scattered wave. In this problem the amplitude spectral density of the particle displacement occurs as unknown function. Special attention is given to the numerical values of the surface wave contributions to the scattered field.Nomenclature x 1, x 2, x 3 Cartesian coordinates - , polar coordinates in x 1, x 3-plane - volume mass density - surface mass density of mass-loading - , Lamé constants - U scalar wave function, defined by (2.1) - c S speed of propagation of uniform shear waves in bulk medium (c S=(/)1/2) - angular frequency - t time - k S wave number of uniform shear waves (k S=/c S) - reduced specific acoustic impedance of mass-loading (=k S /) - k m wave number of SH-surface wave (k m=k S(1+ 2)1/2) - 1,2,3 partial differentiation with respect to x 1,2,3 - i angle between x 3-axis and direction of propagation of incident body wave - i wave number in horizontal direction of incident body wave ( i=k S sin( i)) - i wave number in vertical direction of incident body wave ( i=k S cos( i)) - C 1,2 complex amplitude of surface wave excited by a body wave - R reflection factor of surface wave, when surface wave is incident - T transmission factor of surface wave, when surface wave is incident - S particle displacement vector The research presented in this paper has been carried out with partial financial support from the Delfts Hogeschoolfonds.  相似文献

The numerical modeling of wave flows of heterogeneous media with a threetemperature scheme of interphase heat and mass transfer involves the problem of equation stiffness. A discrete model of improved stability was developed to describe these processes. Test calculations of the interaction of a shock wave with a bounded layer of a mixture of a gas and droplets assuming a discrete model over a wide range of initial data showed that the stability conditions do not depend on the rate of interphase interaction (Cstability).  相似文献

Stationary nonlinear waves propagating in a cold rarefied plasma composed of electrons and two types of ions are considered. The structure of isolated waves and shock waves is found. In recent years an intensive study has been made of finite-amplitude waves and collisionless shock waves in a rarefied plasma, in connection with laboratory experiments [1] and astrophysical applications (the problem of the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere [2]). When allowance is made for dispersion effects associated with the departure of the dispersion law =(k) from the linear, and for the compensating nonlinear twisting of the wave profile, we are able to obtain the profile of stationary nonlinear waves of finite amplitude, and when allowance is made for damping we can also obtain the structure of a collisionless shock wave [3]. Such waves have been studied fairly fully for the case of a two-component plasma. The present paper examines stationary nonlinear waves propagating across a magnetic field in a cold rarefied quasi-neutral plasma composed of electrons and two types of ions.  相似文献

It is shown that the introduction of the known concept of a transfer unit and the use of a four-quadrant diagram leads to a relatively simple and clear computation method for co-current and counter-current heat exchangers.

In an analysis of a one-dimensional numerical model of a nonisothermal plasma it is shown that an ion-acoustic shock wave of subcritical amplitude separates a soliton from the shock front after the reversing stage. This process is accompanied by turbulent flow behind the front and by trapping of ions in potential wells. The numerical particle-in-a-box method is being used widely to study plasma phenomena. One field in which this method has been found fruitful is in the study of a nonisothermal plasma, characterized by an ion-acoustic wave branch.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 3, pp. 3–5, May–June, 1971.The authors thank R. Calculations of the flow of the mixture 0.94 CO2+0.05 N2+0.01 Ar past the forward portion of segmentai bodies are presented. The temperature, pressure, and concentration distributions are given as a function of the pressure ahead of the shock wave and the body velocity. Analysis of the concentration distribution makes it possible to formulate a simplified model for the chemical reaction kinetics in the shock layer that reflects the primary flow characteristics. The density distributions are used to verify the validity of the binary similarity law throughout the shock layer region calculated. The flow of a CO2+N2+Ar gas mixture of varying composition past a spherical nose was examined in [1]. The basic flow properties in the shock layer were studied, particularly flow dependence on the free-stream CO2 and N2 concentration.New revised data on the properties of the Venusian atmosphere have appeared in the literature [2, 3] One is the dominant CO2 concentration. This finding permits more rigorous formulation of the problem of blunt body motion in the Venus atmosphere, and attention can be concentrated on revising the CO2 thermodynamic and kinetic properties that must be used in the calculation. The problem of supersonic nonequilibrium flow past a blunt body is solved within the framework of the problem formulation of [4].Notation V body velocity - shock wave standoff - universal gas constant - ratio of frozen specific heats - hRt/m enthalpy per unit mass undisturbed stream P pressure - density - T temperature - m molecular weight - cp specific heat at constant pressure - (X) concentration of component X (number of particles in unit mass) - R body radius of curvature at the stagnation point - j rate of j-th chemical reaction shock layer P V 2 pressure - density - TT temperature - mm molecular weight Translated from Izv. Summary A method developed by the author for the systematic study of the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of the gas behind a shock wave is reported. The method is applicable to supersonic flow regimes for which the excitation, dissociation and ionization effects invalidate the usually adopted hypothesis of ideal gas.An Ideal Equivalent Gas, having the ratio of the specific heats s dependent on Mach number and altitude of flight is postulated. On the basis of the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations, valid through the shock wave, the relations defining the thermodynamic and dynamic state of the gas behind the shock wave are derived. These relations establish an extension of the classic relations valid for the ideal gas and reduce to them identically for s=.The dependence of the ratio of specific heats s of the Ideal Equivalent Gas on Mach number and altitude has been established, over a wide range, on the basis of the real gas solutions derived by Huber.

The effective length method [1, 2] has been used to make systematic calculations of the heat transfer for laminar and turbulent boundary layers on slender blunt-nosed cones at small angles of attack ( + 5° in a separationless hypersonic air stream dissociating in equilibrium (half-angles of the cones 0 20°, angles of attack 0 15°, Mach numbers 5 M 25). The parameters of the gas at the outer edge of the boundary layer were taken equal to the inviscid parameters on the surface of the cones. Analysis of the results leads to simple approximate dependences for the heat transfer coefficients.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 173–177, September–October, 1981.  相似文献
