The midpoint method is an iterative method for the solution of nonlinear equations in a Banach space. Convergence results for this method have been studied in [3, 4, 9, 12]. Here we show how to improve and extend these results. In particular, we use hypotheses on the second Fréchet derivative of the nonlinear operator instead of the third-derivative hypotheses employed in the previous results and we obtain Banach space versions of some results that were derived in [9, 12] only in the real or complex space. We also provide various examples that validate our results.   相似文献

When constructing multivariate Padé approximants, highly structured linear systems arise in almost all existing definitions [10]. Until now little or no attention has been paid to fast algorithms for the computation of multivariate Padé approximants, with the exception of [17]. In this paper we show that a suitable arrangement of the unknowns and equations, for the multivariate definitions of Padé approximant under consideration, leads to a Toeplitz-block linear system with coefficient matrix of low displacement rank. Moreover, the matrix is very sparse, especially in higher dimensions. In Section 2 we discuss this for the so-called equation lattice definition and in Section 3 for the homogeneous definition of the multivariate Padé approximant. We do not discuss definitions based on multivariate generalizations of continued fractions [12, 25], or approaches that require some symbolic computations [6, 18]. In Section 4 we present an explicit formula for the factorization of the matrix that results from applying the displacement operator to the Toeplitz-block coefficient matrix. We then generalize the well-known fast Gaussian elimination procedure with partial pivoting developed in [14, 19], to deal with a rectangular block structure where the number and size of the blocks vary. We do not aim for a superfast solver because of the higher risk for instability. Instead we show how the developed technique can be combined with an easy interval arithmetic verification step. This is the first of a series of papers on partition functions and the index theory of transversally elliptic operators. In this paper we only discuss algebraic and combinatorial issues related to partition functions. Using the theory of measurable categories developed in [10], we provide a notion of representations of 2-groups better suited to physically and geometrically interesting examples than that using 2-VECT (cf. [8]). Using this theory we sketch a 2-categorical approach to the state-sum model for Lorentzian quantum gravity proposed in [6], and suggest state-integral constructions for 4-manifold invariants.  相似文献

In this note we study the equivariant cohomology with compact supports of the zeroes of the moment map for the cotangent bundle of a linear representation of a torus and some of its notable subsets, using the theory of the infinitesimal index, developed in [8]. We show that, in analogy to the case of equivariant K-theory dealt with in [7] using the index of transversally elliptic operators, we obtain isomorphisms with notable spaces of splines studied in [2], [3].  相似文献

Order-compactifications of totally ordered spaces were described by Blatter (J Approx Theory 13:56–65, 1975) and by Kent and Richmond (J Math Math Sci 11(4):683–694, 1988). Their results generalize a similar characterization of order-compactifications of linearly ordered spaces, obtained independently by Fedorčuk (Soviet Math Dokl 7:1011–1014, 1966; Sib Math J 10:124–132, 1969) and Kaufman (Colloq Math 17:35–39, 1967). In this note we give a simple characterization of the topology of a totally ordered space, as well as give a new simplified proof of the main results of Blatter (J Approx Theory 13:56–65, 1975) and Kent and Richmond (J Math Math Sci 11(4):683–694, 1988). Our main tool will be an order-topological modification of the Dedekind-MacNeille completion. In addition, for a zero-dimensional totally ordered space X, we determine which order-compactifications of X are Priestley order-compactifications.  相似文献

Following Zhu (Semigroup Forum, 2011, doi:), we study generalized Cayley graphs of semigroups. The Cayley D-saturated property, a particular combinatorial property, of generalized Cayley graphs of semigroups is considered and most of the results in Kelarev and Quinn (Semigroup Forum 66:89–96, 2003), Yang and Gao (Semigroup Forum 80:174–180, 2010) are extended. In addition, for some basic graphs and their complete fission graphs, we describe all semigroups whose universal Cayley graphs are isomorphic to these graphs.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a variation of the equations of a chemotaxis kinetic model and investigate it in one dimension. In fact, we use fractional diffusion for the chemoattractant in the Othmar–Dunbar–Alt system (Othmer in J Math Biol 26(3):263–298, 1988). This version was exhibited in Calvez in Amer Math Soc, pp 45–62, 2007 for the macroscopic well-known Keller–Segel model in all space dimensions. These two macroscopic and kinetic models are related as mentioned in Bournaveas, Ann Inst H Poincaré Anal Non Linéaire, 26(5):1871–1895, 2009, Chalub, Math Models Methods Appl Sci, 16(7 suppl):1173–1197, 2006, Chalub, Monatsh Math, 142(1–2):123–141, 2004, Chalub, Port Math (NS), 63(2):227–250, 2006. The model we study here behaves in a similar way to the original model in two dimensions with the spherical symmetry assumption on the initial data which is described in Bournaveas, Ann Inst H Poincaré Anal Non Linéaire, 26(5):1871–1895, 2009. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for this model, as well as a convergence result for a family of numerical schemes. The advantage of this model is that numerical simulations can be easily done especially to track the blow-up phenomenon.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate POD discretizations of abstract linear–quadratic optimal control problems with control constraints. We apply the discrete technique developed by Hinze (Comput. Optim. Appl. 30:45–61, 2005) and prove error estimates for the corresponding discrete controls, where we combine error estimates for the state and the adjoint system from Kunisch and Volkwein (Numer. Math. 90:117–148, 2001; SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 40:492–515, 2002). Finally, we present numerical examples that illustrate the theoretical results.  相似文献

We investigate the essential dimension of finite groups using the multihomogenization technique introduced in [KLS09], for which we provide new applications in a more general setting. We generalize the central extension theorem of Buhler and Reichstein [BR97, Theorem 5.3] and use multihomogenization as a substitute to the stackinvolved part of the theorem of Karpenko and Merkurjev [KM08] about the essential dimension of p-groups.  相似文献

Global and local Weyl modules were introduced via generators and relations in the context of affine Lie algebras in [CP2] and were motivated by representations of quantum affine algebras. In [FL] a more general case was considered by replacing the polynomial ring with the coordinate ring of an algebraic variety and partial results analogous to those in [CP2] were obtained. In this paper we show that there is a natural definition of the local and global Weyl modules via homological properties. This characterization allows us to define the Weyl functor from the category of left modules of a commutative algebra to the category of modules for a simple Lie algebra. As an application we are able to understand the relationships of these functors to tensor products, generalizing results in [CP2] and [FL]. We also analyze the fundamental Weyl modules and show that, unlike the case of the affine Lie algebras, the Weyl functors need not be left exact.  相似文献

We consider the three dimensional gravitational Vlasov Poisson system which is a canonical model in astrophysics to describe the dynamics of galactic clusters. A well known conjecture (Binney, Tremaine in Galactic Dynamics, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1987) is the stability of spherical models which are nonincreasing radially symmetric steady states solutions. This conjecture was proved at the linear level by several authors in the continuation of the breakthrough work by Antonov (Sov. Astron. 4:859–867, 1961). In the previous work (Lemou et al. in A new variational approach to the stability of gravitational systems, submitted, 2011), we derived the stability of anisotropic models under spherically symmetric perturbations using fundamental monotonicity properties of the Hamiltonian under suitable generalized symmetric rearrangements first observed in the physics literature (Lynden-Bell in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 144:189–217, 1969; Gardner in Phys. Fluids 6:839–840, 1963; Wiechen et al. in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 223:623–646, 1988; Aly in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 241:15, 1989). In this work, we show how this approach combined with a new generalized Antonov type coercivity property implies the orbital stability of spherical models under general perturbations.  相似文献

We investigate the small area limit of the gauged Lagrangian Floer cohomology of Frauenfelder [Fr1]. The resulting cohomology theory, which we call quasimap Floer cohomology, is an obstruction to displaceability of Lagrangians in the symplectic quotient. We use the theory to reproduce the results of Fukaya–Oh–Ohta–Ono [FuOOO3,1] and Cho–Oh [CO] on non-displaceability of moment fibers of not-necessarily-Fano toric varieties and extend their results to toric orbifolds, without using virtual fundamental chains. Finally, we describe a conjectural relationship with Floer cohomology in the quotient.  相似文献

In this paper we provide a Heine–Borel type characterization for 0-compactness in approach spaces (Lowen 1997). Since this requires making use of the so-called regular function frame the most natural setting to develop this in is approach frames (Banaschewski 1999; Banaschewski et al., Acta Math Hung 115(3):183–196, 2007, Topology Appl 153:3059–3070, 2006). We then go on to characterize Hausdorffness for approach frames which allows us to study some fundamental properties of compact Hausdorff approach frames.  相似文献

Coz-unique frames were defined and characterized by Banaschewski and Gilmour (J Pure Appl Algebra 157:1–22, 2001). In this note we give further characterizations of these frames along the lines of characterizations of absolutely z-embedded spaces obtained by Blair and Hager (Math Z 136:41–52, 1974) on the one hand, and by Hager and Johnson (Canad J Math 20:389–393, 1968) on the other. We also extend to frames certain characterizations of z-embedded spaces; namely, we give a characterization of coz-onto frame homomorphisms in terms of normal covers.   相似文献

We provide a semilocal convergence analysis for a certain class of secant-like methods considered also in Argyros (J Math Anal Appl 298:374–397, 2004, 2007), Potra (Libertas Mathematica 5:71–84, 1985), in order to approximate a locally unique solution of an equation in a Banach space. Using a combination of Lipschitz and center-Lipschitz conditions for the computation of the upper bounds on the inverses of the linear operators involved, instead of only Lipschitz conditions (Potra, Libertas Mathematica 5:71–84, 1985), we provide an analysis with the following advantages over the work in Potra (Libertas Mathematica 5:71–84, 1985) which improved the works in Bosarge and Falb (J Optim Theory Appl 4:156–166, 1969, Numer Math 14:264–286, 1970), Dennis (SIAM J Numer Anal 6(3):493–507, 1969, 1971), Kornstaedt (1975), Larsonen (Ann Acad Sci Fenn, A 450:1–10, 1969), Potra (L’Analyse Numérique et la Théorie de l’Approximation 8(2):203–214, 1979, Aplikace Mathematiky 26:111–120, 1981, 1982, Libertas Mathematica 5:71–84, 1985), Potra and Pták (Math Scand 46:236–250, 1980, Numer Func Anal Optim 2(1):107–120, 1980), Schmidt (Period Math Hung 9(3):241–247, 1978), Schmidt and Schwetlick (Computing 3:215–226, 1968), Traub (1964), Wolfe (Numer Math 31:153–174, 1978): larger convergence domain; weaker sufficient convergence conditions, finer error bounds on the distances involved, and a more precise information on the location of the solution. In this paper, we consider a one-dimensional dam-river system studied by Chentouf and Wang (SIAM J. Control Optim. 47: 2275–2302, 2008). Then, using the frequency multiplier method, we provide a simple and alternative proof of stabilization and regulation results obtained in the work cited above. Moreover, we relax the conditions on the feedback gains involved in the feedback law and give a partial answer to the open problem left by the authors Chentouf and Wang (J. Optim. Theory Appl. 134: 223–239, 2007 and SIAM J. Control Optim. 47: 2275–2302, 2008) concerning the tuning of the gains.  相似文献

In this note we adopt the approach in Bonnit et al. (Czechoslov. Math. J. 60(2):527–539, 2010) to give a direct proof of some recent results in Haak and Le Merdy (Houst. J. Math., 2005) and Haak and Kunstmann (SIAM J. Control Optim. 45:2094–2118, 2007) which characterizes the L p -admissibility of type α depending on p of unbounded observation operators for bounded analytic semigroups.  相似文献
