Advances in science are being sought in newly available opportunities to collect massive quantities of data about complex systems. While key advances are being made in detailed mapping of systems, how to relate these data to solving many of the challenges facing humanity is unclear. The questions we often wish to address require identifying the impact of interventions on the system and that impact is not apparent in the detailed data that is available. Here, we review key concepts and motivate a general framework for building larger scale views of complex systems and for characterizing the importance of information in physical, biological, and social systems. We provide examples of its application to evolutionary biology with relevance to ecology, biodiversity, pandemics, and human lifespan, and in the context of social systems with relevance to ethnic violence, global food prices, and stock market panic. Framing scientific inquiry as an effort to determine what is important and unimportant is a means for advancing our understanding and addressing many practical concerns, such as economic development or treating disease. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Letp > q > 1 be two coprime integers. In this paper, we prove several results about subsets of the interval [0, 1) which does or does not contain all the fractional parts {ξ (p /q)n }, n = 0, 1, 2, …, for certain non‐zero real number ξ. We show, for instance, that there are no real ξ for which the union of two intervals [8/39, 18/39] ∪ [21/39, 31/39] contains the set {ξ (3/2)n }, n ∈ N . The most important aspect of this result is that the total length of both intervals 20/39 is greater than 1/2: the same result as above for [0, 1/2) would imply that there are no Mahler's Z ‐numbers which the best known unsolved problem in this area. On the other hand, it is shown that there are infinitely many ξ for which {ξ (3/2)n } ∈ (5/48, 43/48) for each integer n ≥ 0. We also give simpler proofs of few recent results in this area. The index of a graded ideal measures the number of linear steps in the graded minimal free resolution of the ideal. In this paper, we study the index of powers and squarefree powers of edge ideals. Our results indicate that the index as a function of the power of an edge ideal I is strictly increasing if I is linearly presented. Examples show that this needs not to be the case for monomial ideals generated in degree greater than two.  相似文献

The paper deals with conformally invariant higher‐order operators acting on spinor‐valued functions, such that their symbols are given by powers of the Dirac operator. A general classification result proves that these are unique, up to a constant multiple. A general construction for such an invariant operators on manifolds with a given conformal spin structure was described in (Conformally Invariant Powers of the Ambient Dirac Operator. ArXiv math.DG/0112033, preprint), generalizing the case of powers of the Laplace operator from (J. London Math. Soc. 1992; 46 :557–565). Although there is no hope to obtain explicit formulae for higher powers of the Laplace or Dirac operator on a general manifold, it is possible to write down an explicit formula on Einstein manifolds in case of the Laplace operator (see Laplacian Operators and Curvature on Conformally Einstein Manifolds. ArXiv: math/0506037, 2006). Here we shall treat the spinor case on the sphere. We shall compute the explicit form of such operators on the sphere, and we shall show that they coincide with operators studied in (J. Four. Anal. Appl. 2002; 8 (6):535–563). A well known conjecture about the distribution of primes asserts that between two consecutive squares there is always at least one prime number. The proof of this conjecture is quite out of reach at present, even under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis. This paper is concerned with the distribution of prime numbers between two consecutive powers of integers, as a natural generalization of the afore-mentioned conjecture.   相似文献

Invertibility of all matrices whose rows are convex combinations of the respective rows of A and I is equivalent to A having positive principal minors (i.e. being a P-matrix). These results are extended by considering convex combinations of higher powers of A and of their rows. The tensor product of two graphs, G and H, has a vertex set V(G) × V(H) and an edge between (u,v) and (u′,v′) iff both u u′ ∈ E(G) and v v′ ∈ E(H). Let A(G) denote the limit of the independence ratios of tensor powers of G, lim, α(Gn)/|V(Gn)|. This parameter was introduced in [Brown, Nowakowski, Rall, SIAM J Discrete Math 9 ( 5 ), 290–300], where it was shown that A(G) is lower bounded by the vertex expansion ratio of independent sets of G. In this article we study the relation between these parameters further, and ask whether they are in fact equal. We present several families of graphs where equality holds, and discuss the effect the above question has on various open problems related to tensor graph products. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
