Employing laser wigglers and accelerators provides the potential to dramatically cut the size and cost of X‐ray light sources. Owing to recent technological developments in the production of high‐brilliance electron beams and high‐power laser pulses, it is now conceivable to make steps toward the practical realisation of laser‐pumped X‐ray free‐electron lasers (FELs). In this regard, here the head‐on collision of a relativistic dense electron beam with a linearly polarized laser pulse as a wiggler is studied, in which the laser wiggler can be realised using a conventional quantum laser. In addition, an external guide magnetic field is employed to confine the electron beam against self‐fields, therefore improving the FEL operation. Conditions allowing such an operating regime are presented and its relevant validity checked using a set of general scaling formulae. Rigorous analytical solutions of the dynamic equations are provided. These solutions are verified by performing calculations using the derived solutions and well known Runge–Kutta procedure to simulate the electron trajectories. The effects of self‐fields on the FEL gain in this configuration are estimated. Numerical calculations indicate that in the presence of self‐fields the sensitivity of the gain increases in the vicinity of resonance regions. Besides, diamagnetic and paramagnetic effects of the wiggler‐induced self‐magnetic field cause gain decrement and enhancement for different electron orbits, while these diamagnetic and paramagnetic effects increase with increasing beam density. The results are compared with findings of planar magnetostatic wiggler FELs.  相似文献

The quantum regime of a plasma‐whistler‐wave‐pumped free‐electron laser (FEL) in the presence of an axial‐guide magnetic field is presented. By quantizing both the plasma whistler field and axial magnetic field, an N‐particle three‐dimensional Hamiltonian of quantum‐FEL (QFEL) has been derived. Employing Heisenberg evolution equations and introducing a new collective operator which controls the vertical motion of electrons, a quantum dispersion relation of the plasma whistler wiggler has been obtained analytically. Numerical results indicate that, by increasing the intrinsic quantum momentum spread and/or increasing the axial magnetic field strength, the bunching and the radiation fields grow exponentially. In addition, a spiking behavior of the spectrum was observed with increasing cyclotron frequency which provides an enormous improvement in the coherence of QFEL radiation even in a limit close‐to‐classical regime, where an overlapping of these spikes is observed. Also, an upper limit of the intrinsic quantum momentum spread which depends on the value of the cyclotron frequency was found.  相似文献

Amplification of an electromagnetic wave by a free electron laser (FEL) with a helical wiggler and an ion channel with a periodically varying ion density is examined. The relativistic equation of motion for a single electron in the combined wiggler and the periodic ion-channel fields is solved and the classes of possible trajectories in this configuration are discussed. The gain equation for the FEL in the low-gain-per-pass limit is obtained by adding the effect of the periodic ion channel. Numerical calculation is employed to analyse the gain induced by the effects of the non-uniform ion density. The variation of gain with ion-channel density is demonstrated. It is shown that there is a gain enhancement for group I orbits in the presence of a non-uniform ion-channel but not in a uniform one. It is also shown that periodic ion-channel guiding is used to reach the maximum peak gain in a low ion-channel frequency (low ion density).  相似文献

In this paper three-dimentional simulations are carried out to the phase velocity of a transverse electric wave which propagates in a relativistic electron beam magnetized by a wiggler field and an axial guide magnetic field. The behavior of magnetic fields generated by high frequency transverse plasmons in relativistic plasmas can be described by a set of nonlinear coupling equations, which has considered the nonlinear wave–wave, wave– particle interactions and the relativistic effects of electrons. Modulational instability of the spontaneous magnetic fields is investigated on the basis of the nonlinear coupling equations. Analytical and numerical results indicate the self‐generated magnetic fields are modulationally unstable and will be localized in a narrow region. The characteristic scale and maximum growth rate of the magnetic fields depend on the average Lorentz factor of electrons and the energy density of transverse plasmons. 对高斯束激光摇摆场中的电子运动轨道进行了分析.推导出轴向导引磁场与反向传播的激光摇摆场作用下的单粒子电子运动轨道,并对轨道的稳定性进行了分析.发现当瑞利长度较大时,得到的结果与平面电磁波摇摆场的结果相一致.与静磁摇摆场的自由电子激光相似,在激光摇摆场中的电子轨道也存在两类分立轨道,但是,与静磁摇摆场不同的是,这两类轨道都是稳定的 关键词:  相似文献

Electron acceleration in the inverse free electron laser (IFEL) with a helical wiggler in the presence of ion-channel guiding and axial magnetic field is investigated in this article. The effects of tapering wiggler amplitude and axial magnetic field are calculated for the electron acceleration. In free electron lasers, electron beams lose energy through radiation while in IFEL electron beams gain energy from the laser. The equation of electron motion and the equation of energy exchange between a single electron and electromagnetic waves are derived and then solved numerically using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The tapering effects of a wiggler magnetic field on electron acceleration are investigated and the results show that the electron acceleration increases in the case of a tapered wiggler magnetic field with a proper taper constant.  相似文献

Self-field effects, induced by charge and current densities of the electron beam, on gain in two-stage free-electron laser with nonuniform guide magnetic field is presented. The gain equation for small-signal has been derived analytically. The results of numerical calculations show a gain decrement for group I orbits and a gain enhancement for group II orbits, due to the self-field effects. The wiggler-induced self-magnetic field has a diamagnetic effect for group I orbits, whereas for group II, it has a paramagnetic effect. It is also found that using a nonuniform guide field, rather than a uniform one, causes the gain to increase.  相似文献

本文建立了圆极化摇摆场自由电子激光的单粒子理论,导出了电子未扰轨道及其稳定性判据和自由电子激光单程增益的表达式。单程增益由三项构成,其中第一项即自由电子激光不稳定性的增益与动力学理论得到的指数增益相符。第二项和和三项表明存在一对新的不稳定性——正不稳定性和负不稳定性。该理论没有对电子未扰轨道纵向速度作任何假设,不仅可以更合理地用于常规自由电子激光的研究,而且可以用于短周期摇摆器弱相对论自由电子激光研究。后者由于电子未扰轨道纵向速度比较低,已有的单粒子理论中所作的电子纵向速度约等于光速的假设不再成立。借助数值分析,我们发现:(1)稳定轨道Ⅱ的弱导引场区域也出现了动力学理论描述过的与自由电子激光互作用机理相悖的现象。(2)正不稳定性和负不稳定性在稳定轨道Ⅰ的导引磁场临界值附近可能严重影响自由电子激光的工作。(3)可以使用较弱的短周期摇摆场和较强的导引场产生高频率高增益相干受激辐射。  相似文献

本文根据泊松方程用数值计算给出了电磁铁摇摆器的二维磁场分布,定量地讨论了磁极形状、磁隙大小、周期长短和电流大小等因素对峰值磁场强度的影响,重点讨论了如何根据二维磁场分布选择磁极形状才能提高峰值磁场强度和抑制磁饱和的问题。将计算的二维磁场分布和摇摆器磁场的理想波形相比较,可以帮助我们确定进入摇摆器的束流半径应该控制的范围。在对电磁铁摇摆器磁场二维数值计算的基础上,还探讨了适用ATA电子束的PALADIN摇摆器用于ETA电子束带来的结构设计和材料选择等问题。  相似文献

The motion of a relativistic electron is analyzed in the field configuration consisting of a circular wiggler magnetic field, an axial magnetic field, and the equilibrium self-electric and self-magnetic fields produced by the non-neutral electron ring. By generating Poincare surface-of-section maps, it is shown that when the equilibrium self-fields is strong enough, the electron motions become chaotic. Although the realistic circular wiggler magnetic field destroys the integrability of the electron motion as the equilibrium self-fields do, the role the latter plays to make the motions become chaotic is stronger than the former. In addition, the axial magnetic field can restrain the occurrence of the chaoticity.  相似文献

Specific slow wave structures are needed in order to produce coherent Cherenkov radiation in overmoded relativistic generators. The electromagnetic characteristics of such slow wave, resonant, finite length structures commonly used in relativistic backward wave oscillators have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. In experiments, perturbation techniques were used to study both the fundamental and higher order symmetric transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Finite length effects lead to end reflections and quantization of the wave number. The effects of end reflections in open slow wave structures were found from the spectral broadening of the discrete resonances of the different axial modes. The measured axial and radial field distributions are in excellent agreement with the results of a 2-D code developed for the calculation of the fields in these structures  相似文献

A theory for a two-stream free-electron laser (FEL) with an electromagnetic wiggler (EMW) and axial guide magnetic field is developed. In the analysis, the effects of self-fields are taken into account. The growth rate is derived. The characteristics of the growth rate are studied numerically. The dependence of the normalized wave number, which corresponds to the maximum growth rate, on the cyclotron frequency is presented. The comparisons between the normalized maximum growth rate and its corresponding wave number normalized by employing the axial magnetic field, for the cases with and without self-fields in the two-stream FEL are studied numerically.  相似文献

Linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations are solved to obtain the growth rate of free electron laser instability from a tenuous relativistic electron beam propagating in a partially dielectric loaded waveguide immersed in combined axial and longitudinal wiggler magnetic fields. The instability appears via cyclotron resonance interactions for wave perturbations very close to w-kVz-wc=nk 0VZ where n is the general harmonic number. For n=0, the gain is similar to a slow wave cyclotron amplifier. The theory for the two-stream free electron laser (FEL) consisting of a relativistic electron beam transporting along the axis of a helical wiggler in the presence of an axial guiding magnetic field is proposed and investigated. In the analysis, the effects of self-fields are taken into account. The electron trajectories and the small signal gain are derived. The characteristics of the linear-gain and the normalized maximum gain are studied numerically. The results show that there are seven stable groups of orbits in the presence of self-fields instead of two groups reported in the absence of the self-fields. It is also shown that the normalized gains of three groups decrease while the rest increase with the increasing of normalized cyclotron frequency g20. Furthermore, it is found that the two-stream instability and the self-field lead to a decrease in the maximum gain except for group 3. The results show that the normalized maximum gain is enhanced in comparison with that of the single stream.  相似文献

As one of the relativistic electron tubes having compact configuration and high efficient output,the relativistic magnetron with direct axial radiation is very attractive in pulsed power and high power microwave fields for industrial and military applications.In this paper,the experimental investigation of a relativistic magnetron with axial TE 11 mode radiation is reported.Under a total length of ~ 0.3 m,volume of ~ 0.014 m 3,working at an applied voltage of 508 kV and a magnetic field of ~ 0.31 T,the relativistic magnetron radiates a microwave of 540 MW with the TE 11 mode at 2.35 GHz in the axial direction.The power conversion efficiency is 15.0%.After a lot of shots,the detected amplitudes of microwaves are nearly the same.The fluctuations of wave amplitudes are less than 0.3 dB.  相似文献

Summary The Hamiltonian for an electron travelling through a large-amplitude backward electromagnetic wave, an axial guide magnetic field and radiation field is formulated. Poincaré surface-of-section plots show that this Hamiltonian is non-integrable, and leads to chaotic trajectories. Equilibrium conditions are derived in the limit where the radiation field approaches zero. Compared to conventional FEL, the total energy of the system at pondermotive resonanceE c is large, while the electron's critical energy γc is low for electromagnetic wiggler FEL. Moreover, the threshold wave amplitude (A r=A c) of beam chaoticity is found at lower values of the radiation field amplitude compared to magnetostatic wiggler FEL. Previous features confirmed that electromagnetic wiggler FEL can operate more coherently and more efficiently at moderated particle's energy compared to magnetostatic wiggler FEL.  相似文献

This paper studies the propagation and spatial attenuation of high‐frequency eigen‐symmetric and dipolar electromagnetic waves along a coaxial plasma–metal waveguiding structure that contains a slightly axial and strong radial non‐uniform cylindrical plasma slab in an external azimuthal non‐uniform magnetic field. The influence of such parameters as the effective electron collision frequency, the direct current value producing the external azimuthal magnetic field, parameters that characterize plasma density radial profile, and waveguide geometric parameters on the dispersion, spatial attenuation, and radial field structure of the waves is considered. The regions of waveguiding structure parameters where the electromagnetic wave properties can be effectively controlled are studied and analyzed.  相似文献
