A series of new β-diketonato complexes have been synthesized from the reactions of iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) Ph3P complexes with β-diketones (acetylacetone, benzoylacetone and dibenzoylmethane). All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectral studies (i.r., electronic., magnetic., e.p.r., 1H-n.m.r.) and cyclic voltammetry. The new complexes have been used as catalysts for aromatic coupling and oxidation reactions. Higher catalytic activity has been observed for the nickel(II) complexes compared to the other complexes.

Ten cobalt(II) nitrate complexes with variously substituted 2,6-diphenylpiperidin-4-ones (L1)–(L10) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molecular weight determination, molar conductance and magnetic, thermal, polarographic and spectral studies. The formula [Co(L)2(H2O)4](NO3)2 has been assigned to complexes (2–5), (7), (8) and (10) and [Co(L)2(H2O)2(NO3)]NO3 to complexes (1), (6) and (9). Although piperidin-4-ones have two coordinating sites, namely the ring nitrogen and the carbonyl group, i.r., and polarographic studies indicate that only the ring nitrogen is involved in coordination. Electronic spectral data reveal that these complexes have octahedral geometry.

Hydrogen peroxide oxidation of platinum(II) compounds containing labile groups such as Cl, OH, and alkene moieties has been carried out and the products characterized. The reactions of [PtII (X)2 (N–N)] (X = Cl, OH, X2 = isopropylidenemalorate (ipm); N–N 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine [(dmpda), N-isopropyl-1,3-propanediamine (ippda)] with hydrogen peroxide in an appropriate solvent at room temperature affords [PtIV (OH)(Y)(X)2(N–N)] (Y = OH, OCH3). The crystal structures of [PtIV(OH)(OCH3)(Cl)2(dmpda)]·2H2O (P-1 bar, a = 6.339(2) Å , b = 9.861(1) Å, c = 11.561(1) Å, a = 92.078(9)°, β = 104.78(1)°, γ=100.54(1)°, V = 684.3(2) Å3, Z = 2R = 0.0503) and [PtIV(OH)2(ipm)(ippda)]·3H2O (C 2/c, a = 27.275(6) Å, b=6.954(2) Å, c = 22.331(4) Å, β = 118.30(2)°, V = 3729(2) Å3, Z = 8, R = 0.0345) have been solved and refined. The local geometry around the platinum(IV) atom approximates to a typical octahedral arrangement with two added groups (OH and OCH3; OH and OH) in a transposition. The platinum(IV) compounds with potential labile moieties may be important intermediate species for further reactions.

Summary Imidazoline-2-thione (imtH 2) and 1-methylimidazoline-2-thione (mimtH) react with FeCl2·4H2O in rigorously anhydrous media producing complexes of general formula Fe(LH)2Cl2.Infrared and electronic spectra as well as room temperature magnetic moments are consistent with mononuelear, pseudotetrahedral species. The crystal structure of [Fe(mimHH)2Cl2] confirms this arrangement. The complex crystallises in a triclinic unit cell (a=7.376(2),b=7.595(2),c=15.043(4) Å. =76.80(1)°, =79.60(1)°, =61.90(1)°; V=721.13 Å3; space group=P1, Z=2). Final conventional R from 2267 observed data (F >4(F)) is 0.0271. Average bond lengths are 2.353 Å (Fe–S) and 2.265 Å (Fe–Cl). Angles at the metal range from 91.5(1)° to 114.5(1)°.Thermal degradation of the complexes in flowing air involves sequential loss of halogen and ligand with -Fe2O3 as the final product. The decomposition is exothermic in flowing dinitrogen.

A new series of cobalt(II, III) and copper(II) complexes of 3-(2-furylidene) hydrazino-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine (L) having formulae LMIIX2, L2MIIX2 and LCoIIIX3, (X = Cl, OAc or ClO4; MII = CoII or CuII) were isolated and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductances, magnetic moments and i.r., electronic and e.s.r. spectral measurements. The i.r. spectra indicated that the ligand, L, behaves as a neutral bidentate towards divalent metal ions via a triazine-N, and azomethine-N, and acts as a tridentate towards cobalt(III) via the same two nitrogen atoms and the furan-O. The magnetic moments and electronic spectral data suggest a pseudo-tetrahedral geometry for [L2Co]Cl2, a diamagnetic tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry for [LCoCl3], [LCo(OAc)3] · 4H2O and [LCo(H2O)3](ClO4)3 and a dimeric square pyramidal geometry for both [LCuCl2] and [LCu(OAc)2] · 2H2O through bridged chloro and acetato ligands, respectively. The ligand field parameters (B, 10Dq and ) were evaluated from the electronic spectral data and magnetic moments and related to the bonding of the complexes. The X-band e.s.r. spectra showed three g values with large magnetic anisotropy for [L2Co]Cl2 in accordance with pseudo-tetrahedral CoII complexes; axial pattern for [LCuCl2], [LCu(OAc)2] · 2H2O and [L2Cu(H2O)2](ClO4)2 with two g values and a signal due to M s = ±2 transition for both chloro and acetato copper(II) complexes.

Summary Chloro(N-ethyl-1,3-imidazolidine-2-thione)gold(II) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P¯I with cell dimensions:a=7.213(2)Å,b=7.857(7)Å,c=9.056(3)Å, =108.54°, =100.06(3)°, =107.27(4)° and Z=2.,The structure was refined by a least squares method to a conventional R factor of 7.3%, using 2157 reflections. The metal atom is bonded through the sulfur atom of the ligand which is consistent with the13C n.m.r. spectra of the complexes in d6-acetone. The structure of the complex and coordination around metal are compared with other linear gold(I) complexes.

A new series of hexacoordinate cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 5-(2-carboxyphenylazo)-2-thiohydantoin HL having formulae [LM(OAc)(H2O)2] · nH2O (M = CoII, CuII and NiII), [LMCl(H2O)2] · nH2O (M = CoII and NiII), [LCuCl(H2O)]2 · 2H2O, [LCu(H2O)3](ClO4) and [LCu(HSO4)(H2O)2] were isolated and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivities and magnetic susceptibilities, and by i.r., electronic and e.s.r. spectral measurements, as well as by thermal (t.g. and d.t.g.) analyses. The i.r. spectra indicate that the ligand HL behaves as a monobasic tridentate towards the three divalent metal ions via an azo-N, carboxylate-O and thiohydantoin-O atom. The magnetic moments and electronic spectral data suggest an octahedral geometry for CoII complexes, distorted octahedral geometry for both NiII and CuII complexes with a dimeric structure for [LCuCl(H2O)]2 · 2H2O through bridged chloro ligands. The X-band e.s.r. spectra reveal an axial symmetry for the copper(II) complexes with unsymmetrical Ms = ± 1 signal and G-parameter less than four for the dimeric [LCuCl(H2O)]2 · 2H2O. The thermogravimetry (t.g. and d.t.g.) of some complexes were studied; the order and kinetic parameters of their thermal degradation were determined by applying Coats–Redfern method and discussed.

The three copper(II)-arsenates were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions; their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods:Cu3(AsO4)2-III:a=5.046(2) Å,b=5.417(2) Å,c=6.354(2) Å, =70.61(2)°, =86.52(2)°, =68.43(2)°,Z=1, space group ,R=0.035 for 1674 reflections with sin / 0.90 Å–1.Na4Cu(AsO4)2:a=4.882(2) Å,b=5.870(2) Å,c=6.958(3) Å, =98.51(2)°, =90.76(2)°, =105.97(2)°,Z=1, space group ,R=0.028 for 2157 reflections with sin / 0.90 Å–1.KCu4(AsO4)3:a=12.234(5) Å,b=12.438(5) Å,c=7.307(3) Å, =118.17(2)°,Z=4, space group C2/c,R=0.029 for 1896 reflections with sin / 0.80 Å–1.Within these three compounds the Cu atoms are square planar [4], tetragonal pyramidal [4+1], and tetragonal bipyramidal [4+2] coordinated by O atoms; an exception is the Cu(2)[4+1] atom in Cu3(AsO4)2-III: the coordination polyhedron is a representative for the transition from a tetragonal pyramid towards a trigonal bipyramid. In KCu4(AsO4)3 the Cu(1)[4]O4 square and the As(1)O4 tetrahedron share a common O—O edge of 2.428(5) Å, resulting in distortions of both the CuO4 square and the AsO4 tetrahedron. The two Na atoms in Na4Cu(AsO4)2 are [6] coordinated, the K atom in KCu4(AsO4)3 is [8] coordinated by O atoms.

Summary Mixed ligand diglycinatocopper(II) complexes of the Cu(glygly)L·nH2O type, where glygly stands for [NH2-CH2 CONCH2CO2]2– and L for imidazole (n = 1.5), N-methylimidazole (n = 1), 2-methylimidazole (n = 2), 4-methylimidazole (n = 2), 4-phenylimidazole (n = 2), N-acetylhistamine (n = 2) and NH3 (n = 2), were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, i.r., vis. and e.p.r. spectroscopic measurements. The molecular structure of [Cu(glygly)(achmH)]·2H2O (achmH = acetylhistamine) was determined using three dimensional XRD data. The structure consists of distorted square planar [Cu(glygly)-(achmH)] units interconnected via the peptide oxygen at the apex to complete a square pyramidal structure, Cu—O-(peptide) 2.477(2) Å. The H2O molecules, not binding directly to the copper ion, involve in intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the copper units. The dianionic glygly ligand and the imidazole ring bind strongly to the central copper ion with Cu—N(amino) 2.045(6) Å, Cu—N-(peptide) 1.891(5) Å, Cu—O(carboxylate) 2.001(4) Å and Cu—N(imidazole) 1.956(5) Å. The dihedral angle between the imidazole nucleus and the CuN3O xy plane is 6.0°. Similar structures with a CuN3O coordination plane are proposed for the imidazole complexes, based on spectroscopic data. The bonding properties of the glygly ligand and the unidentate imidazole ligands are elucidated and discussed with reference to the electronic structures of the complexes deduced from Gaussian analyses.

Three new framework cobalt (II) phosphates have been synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of piperazine as a structure-directing agent. Crystal data: compound I, [C4N2H12][Co(HPO4)2], monoclinic space group=P21/n 001(no. 14), a=8.5521(10) Å, b=13.5791(15) Å, c=10.0405(11) Å, β=96.855(2)°, V=1157.7(2) Å3, Z=4, M=339.04, Dc= 1.945 g m−3, Mo, λ=0.71073 Å, R1(F0)=0.053; compound II, [C4N2H11][Co2(PO4)(H2PO4)2], monoclinic space group=C2/c (no. 15), a=13.444(5) Å, b=12.874(5) Å, c=8.224(2) Å, β=94.64(2)°, V=1418.8 (2)A 3, Z=8, M=494.96, Dc=2.317 g cm−3, Mo, λ=0.71073 Å ,R1(F0)=0.047; compound III, [C4N2H12]2[Co4(HPO4)6], monoclinic space group=P21/c (no. 14) a=12.8780(13) Å, b=26.671(3) Å, c=8.2592(8) Å, β=96.931(2)°, V=2816.0(5) Å3, Z=4, M=987.90, Dc=2.330gcm-3, Mo, λ=0.71073 Å, R1(F0)=0.048. The structure of I consists of one-dimensional chains built up of corner-shared four rings (Co2P2) which are key structural units that form the sodalite cage. Compounds II and III have interrupted sodalite-type structures resulting from the removal of Co2+ atoms from sites related by two-fold axes passing through the four rings of the normal sodalite cage structure. The modes of the interruptions in II and III differ in relation to the structure of a regular sodalite cage.

The synthesis of a heteroligand complex of CuCl with triphenylphosphine and 5-pyridine-4-yl-5,6-dihydro-[1,3]dithiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dithiine-2-thione (L) of composition { [CuCl(PPh3)(L)](CH3 CN)}2 (I) is described. The crystals of complex I are triclinic: space group , a = 8.928(2) Å, b = 13.872(3) Å, c = 14.470(3) Å, α = 72.89(3)°, β = 88.41(3)°, γ = 77.02(3)°, and Z = 2. The Cu(1) atom has a quasi-tetrahedral environment including the phosphorus atom of the triphenylphosphine molecule, nitrogen atom of the pyridyl radical of molecule L, and two bridging chloride ions. The fact that noncoordinated sulfur atoms are present can be used for the further interaction of complex I with soft Lewis acids.__________Translated from Koordinatsionnaya Khimiya, Vol. 31, No. 6, 2005, pp. 462–465.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Koshevaya, Starodub.

2-[2-(Hydroxybenzylidene)-amino]-2-hydoxymethylpropane-1,3-diol (HL) reacts with cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc chlorides, bromides and acetates in water–ethanol solutions and gives MLX · nH2O and ML2 · nH2O complexes (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn; X = Cl, Br; n = 0–5). Single crystals of CuLBr were grown, and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystals are tetragonal, a = 17.024(2), c = 8.720(2) Å, space group P 21 c, Z = 8, R 1 = 0.0349. In the structure of this complex, the copper atom coordinates the deprotonated HL molecule. The coordination polyhedron of the central atom is an elongated tetragonal pyramid. Its base is built of the imine nitrogen atom, phenolic and alcoholic oxygen atoms, and bromine atom. The apex of the pyramid is occupied by the bromine atom of the adjacent complex connected with the initial complex by the plane of sliding reflection. Thus, the crystal contains infinite chains of complexes running along the c axis, the complexes being united by both bridging bromine atoms and O–H···O hydrogen bonds. The conclusions on the compositions and structures of the remaining compounds were made on the basis of elemental and combined thermal analyses, IR spectroscopy, and magnetic chemistry data. The copper halide complexes were found to have dimeric, and the other metal complexes monomeric, structures. In the synthesized complexes, the azomethine HL can function as a bidentate or tridentate ligand. The thermolysis of the coordination compounds proceeds through the stages of elimination of crystal water molecules (75–90°C) or inner-sphere water molecules (145–155°C) and complete thermal destruction (485–550°C).

Studies on the catalytic reduction of nitrite on carbon electrodes modified with Co(II) tetra-2,3-pyridinoporphyrazine (CoTppa, 1), N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetramethyltetra-2,3-pyridinoporphyrazine ([CoTm-2,3-tppa]4+, 2) and Co(II) N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetramethyltetra-3,4-pyridinoporphyrazine ([CoTm-3,4-tppa]4+, 3) are reported. There is a close correspondence between the proximity of the methyl groups to the porphyrazine ring and the catalytic activity of the porphyrazine complexes. Bulk electrolysis gave ammonia and hydroxylamine as some of the products. The catalytic activity of the cationic complex, 3, towards the detection of low concentrations of nitrite (<10−9 M) in water containing sodium sulfate, was compared with the activities of the anionic cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([CoTSPc]4−, 4) and the mixed [CoIITm-3,4-tppa]4+·[CoTSPc]4− (5) complexes. Complex 5 showed the best catalytic activity of the three in that large currents were obtained for very low concentrations of nitrite.

A new binucleating ligand incorporating four oxime groups, butane-2,3-dione O-[4-aminooxy-2,3-bis-(2-hydroxyimino-1-methyl-propylideneaminooxymethyl)-but-2-enyl]-dioxime, (H4mto), has been synthesized and its dinuclear cobalt(III), copper(II), and homo- and hetero-tetranuclear copper(II)–manganese(II) complexes have been prepared and characterized by 1H- and 13C-n.m.r., i.r., magnetic moments and mass spectral studies. Elemental analyses, stoichiometric and spectroscopic data indicate that the metal ions in the complexes are coordinated to the oxime nitrogen atoms (C=N) and the data support the proposed structure for H4mto and its complexes. Moreover, dinuclear cobalt(III) and copper(II) complexes of H4mto have a 2:1 metal:ligand ratio.

Summary Several cobalt(II) halide complexes derived from 1,8-bis(2-pyridyl)-3,6-dithiaoctane (bpdto) are described. Chemical analysis suggests their formulae to be: Co(bpdto)X2 (X=Cl, Br, or I). Electrolytic conductivities in acetonitrile, magnetic moments at different temperatures, solid state i.r. and u.v.-visible spectra support a tetrahedral stereochemistry around the cobalt(II). The ligand is bidentate andN-bonded in all cases. This work was presented in the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Chemical Society, Porto (Portugal), March 1982.
