A single free stream axial vortex of controlled strength and position was used to investigate a vortical receptivity of Blasius boundary layer. Excited boundary-layer disturbances were dominated by streamwise velocity perturbations, that grew downstream essentially linearly with the streamwise coordinate. It was shown that the disturbance characteristics are in agreement with data of previous experiments performed under natural and control conditions concerning the ‘by-pass’ transition initiated at high free stream disturbance levels. It was proved that the role of the leading edge in the receptivity process and disturbance growth under consideration is not dominant.  相似文献

The objective of receptivity is to investigate the mechanisms by which external disturbances generate unstable waves. In hypersonic boundary layers, a new receptivity process is revealed, which is that fast and slow acoustics through nonlinear interaction can excite the second mode near the lower-branch of the second mode. They can generate a sum-frequency disturbance though nonlinear interaction, which can excite the second mode. This receptivity process is generated by the nonlinear interaction and the nonparallel nature of the boundary layer. The receptivity coefficient is sensitive to the wavenumber difference between the sumfrequency disturbance and the lower-branch second mode. When the wavenumber difference is zero, the receptivity coefficient is maximum. The receptivity coefficient decreases with the increase of the wavenumber difference. It is also found that the evolution of the sum-frequency disturbance grows linearly in the beginning. It indicates that the forced term generated by the sum-frequency disturbance resonates with the second mode.  相似文献

A single trailing vortex developed behind a micro-wing immersed in a free stream was used to study the vortex receptivity of the boundary layer on a flat plate. As a result of the interaction, in the boundary layer there develop longitudinal-velocity disturbances which grow almost linearly in the longitudinal coordinate. The parameters of the excited steady disturbances agree with the data of previous experiments performed under natural conditions and dealing with an indirect scenario of laminar-turbulent transition at high free-stream turbulence. It is shown that the leading edge of the plate does not play a decisive role in the mechanism of growth of disturbances of this kind and the receptivity is non-local in nature.  相似文献

The receptivity of a laminar boundary layer to free stream disturbances has been experimentally investigated through the introduction of deterministic localized disturbances upstream of a flat plate mounted in a wind tunnel. Hot-wire measurements indicate that the spanwise gradient of the normal velocity component (and hence the streamwise vorticity) plays an essential role in the transfer of disturbance energy into the boundary layer. Inside the laminar boundary layer the disturbances were found to give rise to the formation of longitudinal structures of alternating high and low streamwise velocity. Similar streaky structures exist in laminar boundary layers exposed to free stream turbulence, in which the disturbance amplitude increases in linear proportion to the displacement thickness. In the present study the perturbation amplitude of the streaks was always decaying for the initial amplitudes used, in contrast to the growing fluctuations that are observed in the presence of free stream turbulence. This points out the importance of the continuous influence from the free stream turbulence along the boundary layer edge.  相似文献

We report the findings from a theoretical analysis of optimally growing disturbances in an initially turbulent boundary layer. The motivation behind this study originates from the desire to generate organized structures in an initially turbulent boundary layer via excitation by disturbances that are tailored to be preferentially amplified. Such optimally growing disturbances are of interest for implementation in an active flow control strategy that is investigated for effective jet noise control. Details of the optimal perturbation theory implemented in this study are discussed. The relevant stability equations are derived using both the standard decomposition and the triple decomposition. The chosen test case geometry contains a convergent nozzle, which generates a Mach 0.9 round jet, preceded by a circular pipe. Optimally growing disturbances are introduced at various stations within the circular pipe section to facilitate disturbance energy amplification upstream of the favorable pressure gradient zone within the convergent nozzle, which has a stabilizing effect on disturbance growth. Effects of temporal frequency, disturbance input and output plane locations as well as separation distance between output and input planes are investigated. The results indicate that optimally growing disturbances appear in the form of longitudinal counter-rotating vortex pairs, whose size can be on the order of several times the input plane mean boundary layer thickness. The azimuthal wavenumber, which represents the number of counter-rotating vortex pairs, is found to generally decrease with increasing separation distance. Compared to the standard decomposition, the triple decomposition analysis generally predicts relatively lower azimuthal wavenumbers and significantly reduced energy amplification ratios for the optimal disturbances.  相似文献

The paper presents a review of results of some recent (mainly experimental) studies devoted to a quantitative investigation of the problem of receptivity of the 2D and 3D boundary layers with respect to various 3D (in general) external perturbations. The paper concentrates on the mechanisms of excitation and development of stationary and travelling instability modes in a 3D boundary layer on a swept wing, as well as in 2D boundary layers including the Blasius flow and a self-similar boundary layer with an adverse pressure gradient. In particular, the following problems of the boundary-layer receptivity are discussed: (i) receptivity to localized 3D surface roughness, (ii) receptivity to localized 3D surface vibrations, (iii) acoustic receptivity in presence of 3D surface roughness, and (iv) acoustic receptivity in the presence of 3D surface vibrations. All experiments described in the paper were conducted using controlled disturbance conditions with the help of simulation of the stationary and non-stationary perturbations by means of several disturbance generators. This approach gives us the possibility to obtain quantitative results which are independent of any uncontrolled background perturbations of the flow and the experimental model. In contrast to the data obtained at “natural” environmental conditions these results can be directly compared with calculations without any significant assumptions about the physical nature of the disturbances under investigation. The complex (amplitude and phase) coefficients of the boundary-layer receptivity to external perturbations, obtained as functions of the disturbance frequency and the spanwise wavenumber (or the wave propagation angle), represent the main results of the experiments described. These results can be used for the evaluation of the initial amplitudes and phases of the instability modes generated by various external perturbations, as well as for quantitative verification of linear receptivity theories. Several examples of the comparison of experimental results with calculations are also presented in this paper. A brief analysis of the state-of-art in the field is performed and some general properties of different receptivity mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Numerical modeling of the receptivity of a two-dimensional flat-plate boundary layer to entropy disturbances is carried out at the freestream Mach number M = 6. Low-intensity perturbations considered are in the form of temperature spots of various shapes and with different initial positions downstream of the shock. They are shown to be able to generate unstable disturbances in the boundary layer. This receptivity mechanism is relatively weak as compared with the receptivity to acoustic waves. When the entropy perturbations are introduced upstream of the bow shock, they first pass across the shock. Downstream of the shock this interaction generates acoustic waves which, in turn, penetrate into the boundary layer thus exciting unstable disturbances of a considerably greater amplitude than the temperature spots. Thus, the bow shock can change the receptivity mechanism.  相似文献

The mechanism of initiation of a turbulent spot via the interaction of a localized longitudinal “streaky”-structure vortex with a high-frequency disturbance is studied in a model experiment. Both qualitative and quantitative characteristics and the structure of the localized longitudinal disturbance and the high-frequency wave packet are investigated. A spatial and temporal Fourier analysis of the disturbances developing in the boundary layer is carried out. The analysis shows that in the course of the disturbance interaction flow energy is “pumped” over into both high-frequency disturbances and longitudinal structures.

The upstream perturbations that maximise the spatial energy growth in a boundary layer are called optimal perturbations. The optimal perturbations correspond to streamwise vortices and the downstream response corresponds to streamwise streaks. The aim of the present paper is to find a control by blowing and suction at the wall that zeros the energy of perturbation, when the initial disturbance is itself optimal. We shall also address the question: which kind of blowing and suction at the wall is most effective in controlling optimal disturbances? The problem is examined by a method of receptivity analysis based on a numerical solution of a system of equations adjoint to the linearised boundary layer equations. We shall investigate both cases of a flat and a concave wall.  相似文献

A combined theoretical and numerical analysis of an experiment devoted to the excitation of Görtler vortices by localized stationary or vibrating surface nonuniformities in a boundary layer over a concave surface is performed. A numerical model of generation of small-amplitude disturbances and their downstream propagation based on parabolic equations is developed. In the framework of this model, the optimal and the modal parts of excited disturbance are defined as solutions of initial-value problems with initial values being, respectively, the optimal disturbance and the leading local mode at the location of the source. It is shown that a representation of excited disturbance as a sum of the optimal part and a remainder makes it possible to describe its generation and downstream propagation, as well as to predict satisfactorily the corresponding receptivity coefficient. In contrast, the representation based on the modal part provides only coarse information about excitation and propagation of disturbance in the range of parameters under investigation. However, it is found that the receptivity coefficients estimated using the modal parts can be reinterpreted to preserve their practical significance. A corresponding procedure was developed. The theoretical and experimental receptivity coefficients are estimated and compared. It is found that the receptivity magnitudes grow significantly with the disturbance frequency. Variation of the span-wise scale of the nonuniformities affects weakly the receptivity characteristics at zero frequency. However, at high frequencies, the efficiency of excitation of Görtler vortices depends substantially on the span-wise scale.  相似文献

The interaction between disturbances in a compressible boundary layer in the presence of distributed mass transfer (injection or suction) through a permeable porous wall is considered in the linear and nonlinear approximations (weakly nonlinear stability theory). The regimes of moderate and high supersonic velocities (Mach numbers M = 2 and 5.35) are studied. The boundary conditions for the disturbances on a permeable wall are derived with account for the gas compressibility in pores and the presence of a suction chamber. Maximum pore dimensions, at which the surface properties have no effect on the disturbance characteristics, which are stabilized upon suction and destabilized upon injection, are determined. When the surface properties are taken into account, intense growth of the first-mode vortex disturbances occurs, which can completely undo the stabilizing effect of the suction. Injection leads to the vortex and acoustic mode destabilization on the linear range and the enhancement of the nonlinear processes on the transitional range.  相似文献

Non-homogeneous multiple scales are introduced to solve the resonant problem of non-parallel boundary-layer receptivity originating from the quadratic mixing of environmental disturbances. The resulting algorithm is computationally inexpensive and can be efficiently included in industrial codes for transition prediction. The mutual interactions between acoustic wave, vorticity wave, wall vibration and wall roughness are discussed in detail and the receptivity coefficient, which relates the amplitude of the excited wave to the amplitude of the exciting sources, is computed. The largest effect is found for the interaction between acoustic waves and wall roughness perturbations. Other coupling mechanisms are less effective. By comparing parallel and non-parallel results, it is found that flow non-parallelism can play a non-negligible role even in Blasius’ boundary layer, although the largest effects are evident for the three-dimensional boundary layer over an infinite swept wing. For the particular case of wall roughness—wall vibration mixing, the velocity disturbance is shown to be exactly equal to the velocity perturbation induced by wall roughness alone on a wall vibrating in the normal direction.  相似文献

The objective of the work was to investigate the effect of compliant surfaces on the receptivity and bypass transition of a boundary layer. Hot wire measurements in the pre-transitional and transitional boundary layers on nine different compliant and one rigid surface with identical geometries were made. The experiments were conducted in air and the compliant surfaces were manufactured from gelatine covered by a 10 μm protective PVC film. The laminar boundary layer profiles and growth rate results were the same for all the surfaces. However, the receptivity of the laminar boundary layer to freestream disturbances increased close to the leading edge of each compliant surface. Further downstream the majority of the compliant surfaces were successful in reducing the receptivity to a value below that for the rigid surface. The transition onset position on the compliant surfaces ranged from 3% downstream to 20% upstream of the rigid surface position. It was concluded that compliant surfaces with optimum properties can reduce receptivity and delay transition.  相似文献

Controlled, localized disturbances were introduced into the supersonic freestream upstream of a 4:1 elliptic cross-section cone. The response of the initially laminar boundary layer to the laser-generated freestream perturbation was measured above the cone minor axis. The experiment was conducted in the Mach-4 Purdue Quiet-flow Ludwieg tube at a freestream unit Reynolds number of 4.5 million/m. The focused beam from a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser was used to generate the disturbance. The perturbation existed in the flowfield as a region of locally heated air, referred to here as the thermal spot. Constant-temperature anemometry was used to characterize the boundary-layer response to the introduction of the thermal spot. The response was largest and most complex near the boundary-layer edge. The duration of the measured boundary-layer response was an order of magnitude greater than the measured duration of the disturbance in the freestream. Within the boundary layer, the mass-flux deviation introduced by the thermal spot was of the same magnitude as the local mean mass flux. The optically generated disturbance is potentially useful as a perturbation source in future boundary-layer receptivity experiments. Received: 15 February 2000 / Accepted: 16 October 2001  相似文献

The present paper presents an experimental effort on the regeneration process of two low-speed laminar streaks in a zero-pressure-gradient laminar boundary layer. Two vertical thin wires separated by a spanwise distance of 30 mm are used to introduce disturbances of two rolls of transitional Karmain vortex street to the downstream boundary layer. Both hydrogen bubble visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement show that two lowspeed streaks are induced through leading-edge receptivity process. As these streaks develop in the downstream, two additional low-speed streaks begin to appear outboard of the flank of the original two, together with complex dynamics of streak splitting and merging. A flow pattern of four streaks aligned along the spanwise direction occurs finally in the far downstream. It is found that besides the mechanisms of streak breakdown, the streak interaction is also an important factor characterizing the instability of low speed streaks and their regeneration process.  相似文献

The turbulent-freestream-generated disturbances in the flat-plate boundary layer are studied. As distinct from the conventional representation of turbulence as superposition of exponentially decaying vortex disturbances frozen in the flow and satisfying the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, a model used takes account for their nonlinear development. Its basic features are the deviation of the phase velocity of vortex disturbances from the flow velocity and their slower decay. The model makes it possible to adequately describe the experimentally observable dependences of the velocity fluctuations in the boundary layer and their spectra on the stream wise coordinate.  相似文献

Adjoint-based iterative methods are employed to compute linear optimal disturbances in a spatially growing boundary layer around an elliptic leading edge. The Lagrangian approach is used where an objective function is chosen and constraints are assigned. The optimisation problem is solved using power iterations combined with a matrix-free formulation, where the state is marched forward in time with a standard direct numerical simulation solver and backward with the adjoint solver until a chosen convergence criterion is fulfilled. We consider the global and, more relevant to receptivity studies, the upstream localised optimal initial condition leading to the largest possible energy amplification at time T. We find that the two-dimensional initial condition with the largest potential for growth is a Tollmien–Schlichting-like wave packet that includes the Orr mechanism and is located inside the boundary layer downstream of the leading edge. Three-dimensional optimal disturbances induce streaks by the lift-up mechanism. Requiring the optimal initial condition to be localised upstream of the plate enables us to better study the effects of the leading edge on the boundary layer receptivity mechanisms. Two-dimensional upstream disturbances are inefficient at triggering unstable eigenmodes, whereas three-dimensional disturbances induce streamwise streaks with significant growth.  相似文献

The interaction between disturbances in the hypersonic boundary layer on impermeable and porous surfaces is considered within the framework of weakly-nonlinear stability theory. It is established that on the impermeable surface nonlinear interactions between different waves (acoustic and vortex) occur in the parametric resonance regime. The role of pumping wave is played by a plane acoustic wave. The nonlinear interactions take place over a wide frequency range and can lead to the packet growth of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. On the porous surface the analogous interactions are fairly weak and result in a slight decay of the acoustic mode and a slight amplification of the vortex mode. This leads to the dragging out of the laminar flow regime and the regions of linear disturbance growth. In this situation the low-frequency spectrum of the vortex modes may be filled on account of the nonlinear processes occurring in the three-wave systems between the vortex components.  相似文献
