The magnetic and ferroelectric (FE) properties of TbMnO3 are investigated on the basis of relativistic density functional theory calculations. We show that, due to spin-orbit coupling, the spin-spiral plane of TbMnO3 can be either the bc or ab plane, but not the ac plane. As for the mechanism of FE polarization, our work reveals that the "pure electronic" model by Katsura, Nagaosa, and Balatsky is inadequate in predicting the absolute direction of FE polarization. Our work indicates that to determine the magnitude and the absolute direction of FE polarization in spin-spiral states, it is crucial to consider the displacements of the ions from their centrosymmetric positions.  相似文献

Based on the detailed Mn L(2,3)-edge x-ray resonant scattering results, we report a new complexity in the magnetic order of multiferroic orthomangnites, which has been considered as the simple A-type cycloid order inducing ferroelectricity. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction involved in the orthorhombic distortion brings on F-type canting from the A type, and the ordering type becomes the off-phase synchronized bc cycloid in TbMnO(3) or the tilted antiphase ab cycloid in Eu(3/4)Y(1/4)MnO(3). The F-type canting is responsible for the magnetic field-driven multiferroicity to weak ferromagnetism transition.  相似文献

We have studied IR transmittance spectra of a multiferroic TbMnO3. Three phase transitions (T N = 43 K, T FE = 28 K, and T Tb = 7 K), which manifest themselves in a shift of the absorption band edge of manganese and in changes in the spectral parameters of lines of f-f transitions of terbium, have been detected. An incommensurate character of the magnetic structure leads to nonequivalence of terbium positions and to an additional inhomogeneous broadening. The spontaneous electric polarization, which arises at T < T FE, significantly affects the crystal field that acts on terbium and noticeably shifts its energy levels. The phase transition with ordering of terbium (7 K) is accompanied by a lowering of the energy of the ground state of the Tb3+ ion.  相似文献

The magnetic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the spiral and sinusoidally ordered phases. At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5 meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5 meV mode is in perfect agreement with recent infrared-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as a hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.  相似文献

The wide range optical spectra on a multiferroic prototype TbMnO3 have been investigated to clarify the origin of spin excitations observed in the far-infrared region. We elucidate the full band structure, whose high energy edge (133 cm;{-1}) exactly corresponds to twice of the highest-lying magnon energy. Thus the origin of this absorption band is clearly assigned to two-magnon excitation driven by the electric field of light. There is an overlap between the two-magnon and phonon energy ranges, where the strong coupling between them is manifested by the frequency shift and transfer of oscillator strength of the phonon mode.  相似文献

The eddy-current loss is calculated for nonferromagnetic disks in a rotating magnetic field. The power loss is found as a function of the magnetic field intensity, the field rotation velocity, and the disk dimensions. Following the techniques used by Letelier and Stachel some new physically relevant stationary solutions of string cosmology with magnetic field are presented. In these solutions, the flow vector of matter has non-zero rotation and the cosmological constant is taken to be non-zero. The polarization operator of a photon in a static uniform magnetic field has been studied at photon energies both above and below the threshold of electron–positron pair production by a photon. In the first order of the fine-structure constant α, expressions for the refractive index of a photon with a certain polarization in both low and high fields as compared to the critical field H0 = 4.41 × 1013 G have been obtained. Both the purely quantum range of photon energies, where the particles of a pair are produced at the lowest Landau levels, and the region of applicability of the semiclassical approximation in the case of the population of high energy levels have been considered. 近年来,多铁异质结中电控磁性研究引起了广泛关注,已成为多铁领域的热点.现代自旋电子学器件(如磁内存)通常利用电流产生的磁场或自旋转移扭矩效应驱动磁反转来实现数据擦写,但这带来高额能耗和热量,成为亟待解决的关键难题.而利用多铁异质结实施电场驱动磁反转则有望大幅降低能耗,从而实现高速、低能耗、高稳定性新型高密度磁存储、逻辑及其他自旋电子学器件.在当前器件发展的微型化趋势下,探索可集成化的微纳尺度电场驱动磁反转方案显得越发重要.本文针对发展新型磁电器件所面临的微型化关键问题,回顾了微纳尺度电场驱动磁反转研究的新进展,主要关注小尺度多铁异质结中电控磁的新特点、新方法及相关物理机理的实验和理论成果,讨论了进入纳米尺度将面临的挑战,并对未来研究工作提出一些展望.  相似文献

The investigation of a sizable thermal enhancement of magnetization is put forward for uniaxial ferromagnetic nanoparticles that are placed in a rotating magnetic field. We elucidate the nature of this phenomenon and evaluate the resonant frequency dependence of the induced magnetization. Moreover, we reveal the role of magnetic dipolar interactions, point out potential applications, and reason the feasibility of an experimental observation of this effect.  相似文献

A new axial gas discharge stabilization technique is described. Thermal instabilities and discharge constrictions are suppressed through the use of a transverse rotating magnetic field. The enhanced plasma stability observed is a result of a transverse Lorentz force that deflects the plasma column off-axis. As the magnetic field rotates, the plasma sweeps across the tube cross-section at the angular velocity of the impressed field. A 25% increase in power loading has been achieved using the stabilization technique.  相似文献

The suitability of silicon nanoparticles of 1?nm in diameter for fluorescent sensing was investigated. Silicon nanoparticles were produced in a cluster beam and co-deposited with a beam of vapourised liquids (water, ethanol, isopropanol) onto a cold substrate. Melting of the frozen cluster-ice mixture yielded an aqueous suspension which emitted strong fluorescence in the deep blue spectral range when exposed to UV light. The fluorescence wavelength of the strongest peak was found to correlate with the dipole moment of the solvent molecules which allowed us to derive the transition energy for an isolated nanoparticle. The strong solvent sensitivity showed that the fluorescence originated from a surface state. A second fluorescence peak showed almost no sensitivity to different solvents, hence the peak was attributed to a transition within the bulk?Cvolume of the nanoparticles. Our findings establish that silicon nanoparticles may serve as highly specific bio-sensors in living organism.  相似文献
