The possibility of self-polarization of nuclear spins predicted by M.I. D’yakonov and V.I. Perel’ (JETP Lett. 16, 398 (1972)) has been investigated in the case of the electric current passing through a single quantum dot. The mechanisms of nuclear spin relaxation in the quantum dot leading to the polarization and depolarization of the nuclei are discussed. To make the nuclear polarization possible, it has been proposed to increase the nuclear polarization rate via the interaction of an electron localized in the quantum dot with electromagnetic oscillations in an electric circuit, whose proper frequency is tuned to a resonance with the Zeeman splitting of an electron level in the quantum dot.  相似文献

We measure the strength and the sign of hyperfine interaction of a heavy hole with nuclear spins in single self-assembled quantum dots. Our experiments utilize the locking of a quantum dot resonance to an incident laser frequency to generate nuclear spin polarization. By monitoring the resulting Overhauser shift of optical transitions that are split either by electron or exciton Zeeman energy with respect to the locked transition using resonance fluorescence, we find that the ratio of the heavy-hole and electron hyperfine interactions is -0.09 ± 0.02 in three quantum dots. Since hyperfine interactions constitute the principal decoherence source for spin qubits, we expect our results to be important for efforts aimed at using heavy-hole spins in quantum information processing.  相似文献

We present a technique for manipulating the nuclear spins and the emission polarization from a single optically active quantum dot. When the quantum dot is tunnel coupled to a Fermi sea, we have discovered a natural cycle in which an electron spin is repeatedly created with resonant optical excitation. The spontaneous emission polarization and the nuclear spin polarization exhibit a bistability. For a σ(+) pump, the emission switches from σ(+) to σ(-) at a particular detuning of the laser. Simultaneously, the nuclear spin polarization switches from positive to negative. Away from the bistability, the nuclear spin polarization can be changed continuously from negative to positive, allowing precise control via the laser wavelength.  相似文献

The magnetic state of a single magnetic atom (Mn) embedded in an individual semiconductor quantum dot is optically probed using micro-spectroscopy. A high degree of spin polarization can be achieved for an individual Mn atom localized in a quantum dot using quasi-resonant or fully-resonant optical excitation at zero magnetic field. Optically created spin polarized carriers generate an energy splitting of the Mn spin and enable magnetic moment orientation controlled by the photon helicity and energy. The dynamics and the magnetic field dependence of the optical pumping mechanism shows that the spin lifetime of an isolated Mn atom at zero magnetic field is controlled by a magnetic anisotropy induced by the built-in strain in the quantum dots. The Mn spin distribution prepared by optical pumping is fully conserved for a few microseconds. This opens the way to full optical control of the spin state of an individual magnetic atom in a solid state environment.  相似文献

Hyperfine interaction between electron spin and randomly oriented nuclear spins is a key issue of electron coherence for quantum information/computation. We propose an efficient way to establish high polarization of nuclear spins and reduce the intrinsic nuclear spin fluctuations. Here, we polarize the nuclear spins in semiconductor quantum dot(QD) by the coherent population trapping(CPT) and the electric dipole spin resonance(EDSR) induced by optical fields and ac electric fields. By tuning the optical fields, we can obtain a powerful cooling background based on CPT for nuclear spin polarization. The EDSR can enhance the spin flip–flop rate which may increase the cooling efficiency. With the help of CPT and EDSR, an enhancement of 1300 times of the electron coherence time can be obtained after a 10-ns preparation time.  相似文献

We demonstrate dynamical nuclear-spin polarization in the absence of an external magnetic field by resonant circularly polarized optical excitation of a single electron or hole charged quantum dot. Optical pumping of the electron spin induces an effective inhomogeneous magnetic (Knight) field that determines the direction along which nuclear spins could polarize and enables nuclear-spin cooling by suppressing depolarization induced by nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. Our experiments constitute a first step towards a quantum measurement of the Overhauser field.  相似文献

The spin-blockade regime of double quantum dots features coupled dynamics of electron and nuclear spins resulting from the hyperfine interaction. We explain observed nuclear self-polarization via a mechanism based on feedback of the Overhauser shift on electron energy levels, and propose to use the instability toward self-polarization as a vehicle for controlling the nuclear spin distribution. In the dynamics induced by a properly chosen time-dependent magnetic field, nuclear spin fluctuations can be suppressed significantly below the thermal level.  相似文献

The present study seeks to scrutinize the effect of polarization charges on the electronic properties of double ellipsoidal quantum dots. In this regard, the effective-mass approximation within a variational scheme is used and the binding energy of hydrogenic impurity located at the center of ellipsoidal quantum dot (EQD) is calculated for GaAs/GaAlAs/AlAs structure. The effect of surface polarization charges due to impurity and self-polarization charges on the binding energy is considered. The results showed that the binding energy depends not only on the thickness of the intermediate layer but also on the ellipticity constant.  相似文献

We report on the resonant optical pumping of the | ± 1? spin states of a single Mn dopant in an InAs/GaAs quantum dot which is embedded in a charge tunable device. The experiment relies on a W scheme of transitions reached when a suitable longitudinal magnetic field is applied. The optical pumping is achieved via the resonant excitation of the central Λ system at the neutral exciton X(0) energy. For a specific gate voltage, the redshifted photoluminescence of the charged exciton X- is observed, which allows a nondestructive readout of the spin polarization. An arbitrary spin preparation in the | + 1? or |-1? state characterized by a polarization near or above 50% is evidenced.  相似文献

A mechanism of dynamic self-polarization of nuclei is studied which is weakly temperature-dependent and operates efficiently in low-dimensional systems (quantum wells, quantum dots). It is due to the hyperfine interaction of nuclei with excitons whose spin polarization is artificially maintained at zero (by illuminating with unpolarized light) but for which nonequilibrium alignment occurs. Nuclear self-polarization arises as a result of the conversion of the alignment of excitons into nuclear orientation in the effective magnetic field of the polarized nuclei. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. The spectrum and kinetics of the circular polarization of InP quantum dot (QD) photoluminescence have been experimentally investigated under different conditions of optical excitation and at different bias voltages applied to the sample. It is established that, at a bias of about ?0.1 V, the degree of photoluminescence polarization is negative and reaches ?50% in limiting cases. It is concluded that the negative polarization is formed in QDs containing one recident electron per dot and is mainly caused by the optical orientation of the electron spin. It is shown that all experimentally observed regularities are well described in the framework of the model assuming the energy relaxation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs accompanied by the electron- hole spin flip-flop process.  相似文献

A quantum dot spin light emitting diode provides a test of carrier spin injection into a qubit and a means for analyzing carrier spin injection and local spin polarization. Even with 100% spin-polarized carriers the emitted light may be only partially circularly polarized due to the geometry of the dot. We have calculated carrier polarization-dependent optical matrix elements for InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) for electron and hole spin injection into a range of quantum dot sizes and shapes, and for arbitrary emission directions. Calculations for typical SAQD geometries with emission along [110] show light that is only 5% circularly polarized for spin states that are 100% polarized along [110]. Measuring along the growth direction gives near unity conversion of spin to photon polarization and is the least sensitive to uncertainties in SAQD geometry.  相似文献

We report on the observation of spin-dependent optically dressed states and the optical Stark effect on an individual Mn spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. The vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions in a Mn-doped quantum dot are optically dressed by a strong laser field, and the resulting spectral signature is measured in photoluminescence. We demonstrate that the energy of any spin state of a Mn atom can be independently tuned by using the optical Stark effect induced by a control laser. High resolution spectroscopy reveals a power-, polarization-, and detuning-dependent Autler-Townes splitting of each optical transition of the Mn-doped quantum dot. This experiment demonstrates an optical resonant control of the exciton-Mn system.  相似文献

We have studied the current through a carbon-nanotube quantum dot with one ferromagnetic and one normal-metal lead. For the values of gate voltage at which the normal lead is resonant with the single available nondegenerate energy level on the dot, we observe a pronounced decrease in the current for one bias direction. We show that this rectification is spin dependent, and that it stems from the interplay between the spin accumulation and the Coulomb blockade on the quantum dot. The degree of resulting spin polarization is fully and precisely tunable using the gate and bias voltages.  相似文献

A selection of optical experiments is presented, demonstrating the utility of semiconductors in two novel areas of research: spintronics and quantum information. First we show examples of spin manipulation in semiconductor quantum wells. The light is used to generate a spin polarization and to detect it. Next we discuss application of optical methods in studies of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in quantum wells. Finally, we present examples of single quantum dot spectroscopy related to perspectives of application of quantum dots in quantum information, and, in particular, the use of photon correlation measurements as a tool to study the quantum dot excitation mechanisms. The nuclear quadrupole interaction eliminates the restrictions imposed by hyperfine interaction on the spin coherence of an electron and nuclei in a quantum dot. The strain-induced nuclear quadrupole interaction suppresses the nuclear spin flip and makes possible the zero-field dynamic nuclear polarization in self-organized InP/InGaP quantum dots. The direction of the effective nuclear magnetic field is fixed in space, thus quenching the magnetic depolarization of the electron spin in the quantum dot. The quadrupole interaction suppresses the zero-field electron spin decoherence also for the case of nonpolarized nuclei. These results provide a new vision of the role of the nuclear quadrupole interaction in nanostructures: it elongates the spin memory of the electron-nuclear system.  相似文献

Using the trion as an optical probe, we uncover novel electron spin dynamics in CdSe/ZnSe Stranski-Krastanov quantum dots. The longitudinal spin lifetime obeys an inverse power law associated with recharging processes in the dot ensemble. No hint at spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation is found. At very weak magnetic fields (< 50 mT), electron spin dynamics related to the hyperfine interaction with the lattice nuclei is uncovered. A strong Knight field gives rise to nuclear ordering and formation of dynamical polarization on a 100-micros time scale under continuous electron spin pumping. The associated spin transients are temperature robust and can be observed up to 100 K.  相似文献

We present measurements of the buildup and decay of nuclear spin polarization in a single semiconductor quantum dot. Our experiment shows that we polarize the nuclei in a few milliseconds, while their decay dynamics depends drastically on external parameters. We show that a single electron can very efficiently depolarize nuclear spins in milliseconds whereas in the absence of the electron the nuclear spin lifetime is on the scale of seconds. This lifetime is further enhanced by 1-2 orders of magnitude by quenching the nonsecular nuclear dipole-dipole interactions with a magnetic field of 1 mT.  相似文献

This work presents an overview of investigations of the nuclear spin dynamics in nanostructures with negatively charged InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots characterized by strong quadrupole splitting of nuclear spin sublevels. The main method of the investigations is the experimental measurements and the theoretical analysis of the photoluminescence polarization as a function of the transverse magnetic field (effect Hanle). The dependence of the Hanle curve profile on the temporal protocol of optical excitation is examined. Experimental data are analyzed using an original approach based on separate consideration of behavior of the longitudinal and transverse components of the nuclear polarization. The rise and decay times of each component of the nuclear polarization and their dependence on transverse magnetic field strength are determined. To study the role of the Knight field in the dynamic of nuclear polarization, a weak additional magnetic field parallel to the optical axis is used. We have found that, only taking into account the nuclear spin fluctuations, we can accurately describe the measured Hanle curves and evaluate the parameters of the electron–nuclear spin system in the studied quantum dots. A new effect of the resonant optical pumping of nuclear spin polarization in an ensemble of the singly charged (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots subjected to a transverse magnetic field is discussed. Nuclear spin resonances for all isotopes in the quantum dots are detected in that way. In particular, transitions between the states split off from the ±1/2 doublets by the nuclear quadrupole interaction are identified.  相似文献
