Graphene-polymer nano-composites are one of the most applicable engineering nanostructures with superior mechanical properties. In the present study, a finite element (FE) approach based on the size dependent nonlocal elasticity theory is developed for buckling analysis of nano-scaled multi-layered graphene sheets (MLGSs) embedded in polymer matrix. The van der Waals (vdW) interactions between the graphene layers and graphene-polymer are simulated as a set of linear springs using the Lennard-Jones potential model. The governing stability equations for nonlocal classical orthotropic plates together with the weighted residual formulation are employed to explicitly obtain stiffness and buckling matrices for a multi-layered super element of MLGS. The accuracy of the current finite element analysis (FEA) is approved through a comparison with molecular dynamics (MD) and analytical solutions available in the literature. Effects of nonlocal parameter, dimensions, vdW interactions, elastic foundation, mode numbers and boundary conditions on critical in-plane loads are investigated for different types of MLGS. It is found that buckling loads of MLGS are generally of two types namely In-Phase (INPH) and Out-of-Phase (OPH) loads. The INPH loads are independent of interlayer vdW interactions while the OPH loads depend on vdW interactions. It is seen that the decreasing effect of nonlocal parameter on the OPH buckling loads dwindles as the interlayer vdW interactions become stronger. Also, it is found that the small scale and polymer substrate have noticeable effects on the buckling loads of embedded MLGS.

We introduce the notion of module twistor for a module of a nonlocal vertex algebra. The aim of this paper is to use this concept to unify some deformed constructions of modules of nonlocal vertex algebras, such as twisted tensor products and iterated twisted tensor products of modules of nonlocal vertex algebras.

Colloidal structures inside solutions are usually considered as rigid bodies or linear springs. However, recent experimental results show a strongly nonlinear mechanical response of large clusters. In this contribution, the nonlinear elastic behavior of the colloidal structures inside polymeric solutions is studied. So far, the influences of initial length and fractal dimension on the elastic response of colloidal structures have mostly been considered by scaling theory. Here, we additionally take into account a deformation induced evolution of the aggregate structure which is mainly influenced by inter-particle interactions. To this end, central and lateral (non-central) inter-particle forces are considered separately. Next, the directional stiffness of the colloidal structure is evaluated by using the concept of a backbone chain. The backbone chain is a unique path between two ends of the colloidal structure that carries the main portion of load. The mechanical response of the backbone chain depends on aggregate geometry, deformation history and moreover, on the nature and the strength of the inter-particle interactions. The aggregate geometry is described by means of the angular averaging concept. The so-obtained model can further be generalized for all types of colloidal structures with central and lateral inter-particle forces.

This paper investigates the nonlinear vibration and instability of the embedded double-walled boron nitride nanotubes (DWBNNTs) conveying viscous fluid based on nonlocal piezoelasticity cylindrical shell theory. The elastic medium is simulated as Winkler–Pasternak foundation, and adjacent layers interactions are assumed to have been coupled by van der Walls (vdW) force evaluated based on the Lennard–Jones model. The nonlinear strain terms based on Donnell’s theory are taken into account. The Hamilton’s principle is employed to obtain coupled differential equations, containing displacement and electric potential terms. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is applied to estimate the nonlinear frequency and critical fluid velocity for clamped supported mechanical and free electric potential boundary conditions at both ends of the DWBNNTs. Results indicated that some parameters including nonlocal parameter, elastic medium’s modulus, aspect ratio and vdW force have significant influence on the vibration and instability of the DWBNNT while the fluid viscosity effect is negligible. In addition, the low aspect ratio should be taken into account for DWBNNT in optimum design of nano/micro devices.

The biaxial buckling behavior of single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) is studied in the present work. To consider the size-effects in the analysis, Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity equations are incorporated into the different types of plate theory namely as classical plate theory (CLPT), first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), and higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). An exact solution is conducted to obtain the critical biaxial buckling loads of simply-supported square and rectangular SLGSs with various values of side-length and nonlocal parameter corresponding to each type of nonlocal plate model. Then, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed for a series of armchair and zigzag SLGSs with different side-lengths, the results of which are matched with those obtained by the nonlocal plate models to extract the appropriate values of nonlocal parameter relevant to each type of nonlocal elastic plate model and chirality. It is found that the present nonlocal plate models with their proposed proper values of nonlocal parameter have an excellent capability to predict the biaxial buckling response of SLGSs.

This paper studies the small scale effect on the buckling behaviors of triple-walled carbon nanotubes (TWCNTs) with the initial axial stress under the temperature field. The TWCNTs are modeled as three elastic shells coupled together through vdW interaction between different layers. Buckling governing equations of CNTs are firstly formulated on the basis of nonlocal elastic theory and the small scale effect on CNTs buckling results with the change of temperature are then achieved. The results show that the critical buckling load is dependent on the temperature, scale parameter and wavenumber. Some conclusions are drawn that small scale effect will arise gradually with the increases of wavenumber, and the temperature can influence the ratio between the nonlocal buckling load and the corresponding local load. Furthermore, with or without effects of nonlocal considered, the same results is obtained that the axial buckling load increases as the value of temperature increases at low and room temperature condition, while at high temperature condition the axial buckling load decreases as the value of temperature increases.

Nonlocal and surface effects become important for nanoscale devices. To model these effects on frequency response of linear and nonlinear nanobeam subjected to electrostatic excitation, we use Eringen’s nonlocal elastic theory and surface elastic theory proposed by Gurtin and Murdoch to modify the governing equation. Subsequently, we apply Galerkin’s method with exact mode shape including nonlocal and surface effects to get static and dynamic modal equations. After validating the procedure with the available results, we analyze the variation of pull-in voltage and frequency resonance by varying surface and nonlocal parameters. To do frequency analysis of nonlinear system, we solve nonlinear dynamic equation using the method of multiple scale. We found that the frequency response of nonlinear system reduces for fixed excitation as the surface and nonlocal effects increase. Also, we found that the nature of nonlinearity can be tuned from hardening to softening by increasing the nonlocal effects.

Based on the theories of thermal elasticity mechanics and nonlocal elasticity, an elastic Bernoulli-Euler beam model is developed for thermal-mechanical vibration and buckling instability of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) conveying fluid and resting on an elastic medium. The finite element method is adopted to obtain the numerical solutions to the model. The effects of temperature change, nonlocal parameter and elastic medium constant on the vibration frequency and buckling instability of SWCNT conveying fluid are investigated. It can be concluded that at low or room temperature, the fundamental natural frequency and critical flow velocity for the SWCNT increase as the temperature change increases, on the other hand, while at high temperature the fundamental natural frequency and critical flow velocity decrease as the temperature change increases. The fundamental natural frequency for the SWCNT decreases as the nonlocal parameter increases, both the fundamental natural frequency and critical flow velocity increase as elastic medium constant increases.

The generalized thermoelasticity theory based upon the Green and Naghdi model III of thermoelasticity as well as the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity model is used to study the propagation of harmonic plane waves in a nonlocal thermoelastic medium. We found two sets of coupled longitudinal waves, which are dispersive in nature and experience attenuation. In addition to the coupled waves, there also exists one independent vertically shear-type wave, which is dispersive but experiences no attenuation. All these waves are found to be influenced by the elastic nonlocality parameter. Furthermore, the shear-type wave is found to face a critical frequency, while the coupled longitudinal waves may face critical frequencies conditionally. The problem of reflection of the thermoelastic waves at the stress-free insulated and isothermal boundary of a homogeneous, isotropic nonlocal thermoelastic half-space has also been investigated. The formulae for various reflection coefficients and their respective energy ratios are determined in various cases. For a particular material, the effects of the angular frequency and the elastic nonlocal parameter have been shown on phase speeds and the attenuation coefficients of the propagating waves. The effect of the elastic nonlocality on the reflection coefficients and the energy ratios has been observed and depicted graphically. Finally, analysis of the various results has been interpreted.

To overcome the long wavelength and time limits of classical elastic theory, this paper presents a fractional nonlocal time-space viscoelasticity theory to incorporate the non-locality of both time and spatial location. The stress (strain) at a reference point and a specified time is assumed to depend on the past time history and the stress (strain) of all the points in the reference domain through nonlocal kernel operators. Based on an assumption of weak non-locality, the fractional Taylor expansion series is used to derive a fractional nonlocal time-space model. A fractional nonlocal Kevin–Voigt model is considered as the simplest fractional nonlocal time-space model and chosen to be applied for structural dynamics. The correlation between the intrinsic length and time parameters is discussed. The effective viscoelastic modulus is derived and, based on which, the tension and vibration of rods and the bending, buckling and vibration of beams are studied. Furthermore, in the context of Hamilton’s principle, the governing equation and the boundary condition are derived for longitudinal dynamics of the rod in a more rigorous manner. It is found that when the external excitation frequency and the wavenumber interact with the intrinsic microstructures of materials and the intrinsic time parameter, the nonlocal space-time effect will become substantial, and therefore the viscoelastic structures are sensitive to both microstructures and time.

In this article, we introduce and study a common generalization of the twisted tensor product construction of nonlocal vertex algebras and their modules. We investigate some properties of this new construction; for instance, we give the relations between L-R-twisted tensor product nonlocal vertex algebras and twisted tensor product vertex algebras. Furthermore, we find the conditions for constructing an iterated L-R-twisted tensor product nonlocal vertex algebra and its module.

The nonlinear free vibration of double-walled carbon nanotubes based on the nonlocal elasticity theory is studied in this paper. The nonlinear equations of motion of the double-walled carbon nanotubes are derived by using Euler beam theory and Hamilton principle, with considering the von Kármán type geometric nonlinearity and the nonlinear van der Waals forces. The surrounding elastic medium is formulated as the Winkler model. The harmonic balance method and Davidon–Fletcher–Powell method are utilized for the analysis and simulation of the nonlinear vibration. The simulation results show that the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and surrounding elastic medium play more important roles in the nonlinear noncoaxial vibration than those in the coaxial vibration of the double-walled carbon nanotubes. The noncoaxial vibration amplitudes of only considering nonlinear van der Waals forces are larger than those of considering both geometric nonlinearity and nonlinear van der Waals forces.

A size-dependent plate model is developed to investigate the elastic responses of the multilayered two-dimensional quasicrystal nanoplates based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory for the first time. A nonlocal stress field parameter and a length scale parameter are taken into account in the new model to capture both stiffness-softening and stiffness-hardening size effects. The exact solution for a single-layer two-dimensional quasicrystal simply supported nanoplate is derived by utilizing the pseudo-Stroh formalism in conjunction with the nonlocal strain gradient theory. Afterward, a dual variable and position method is used to deal with the multilayered case. Numerical examples are presented to study the dependence of size-dependent effect on nanoplate length and the influences of scale parameters on the quasicrystal nanoplate subjected to a z-direction mechanical load on its top surface. The proposed model should be useful to verify various nanoplate theories and other numerical methods.

In this article, nonlinear free vibration of embedded double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) duo to the nonlinear interlayer van der Waals (vdW) force is studied based on the nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The interlayer vdW force is modeled as a nonlinear function of inner and outer tubes deflections considering the variation of the interlayer distance along the circumference of DWCNTs. The harmonic balance method is applied to analyze the relationship between the deflection amplitudes and the frequencies of in-phase and out-of-phase free vibrations for DWCNTs. Finally, the influences of the nonlocal parameter, surrounding elastic medium, nanotube length, end condition and vibrational mode on the nonlinear free vibration properties of DWCNTs are discussed in detail.

In the present work, the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on wave dispersion characteristics of equivalent continuum structure (ECS) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) embedded in elastic medium is studied. The ECS is modelled as an Euler–Bernoulli beam. The chemical bonds between a SWCNT and the elastic medium are assumed to be formed. The elastic matrix is described by Pasternak foundation model, which accounts for both normal pressure and the transverse shear deformation. The governing equations of motion for the ECS of SWCNT under a longitudinal magnetic field are derived by considering the Lorentz magnetic force obtained from Maxwell’s relations within the frame work of nonlocal elasticity theory. The wave propagation analysis is performed using spectral analysis. The results obtained show that the velocity of flexural waves in SWCNTs increases with the increase of longitudinal magnetic field exerted on it in the frequency range; 0–20 THz. The present analysis also shows that the flexural wave dispersion in the ECS of SWCNT obtained by local and nonlocal elasticity theories differ. It is found that the nonlocality reduces the wave velocity irrespective of the presence of the magnetic field and does not influences it in the higher frequency region. Further it is found that the presence of elastic matrix introduces the frequency band gap in flexural wave mode. The band gap in the flexural wave is found to independent of strength of the longitudinal magnetic field.
