The quasi-exact properties of an exciton are investigated theoretically in the presence of an external magnetic field using the effective-mass approach in GaAs parabolic quantum dot. The energy spectrum is obtained analytically as a function of the dot radius, interaction strength and magnetic field. It is established that, a steady bound state of an exciton in the ground state exists under the effect of a strong magnetic field; also I noticed that the exciton binding energy decreases by increasing both the radius of the dot and the magnetic field strength and the reduction becomes pronounced for larger dots. As expected, it has been found that the exciton total energy decreases with increasing the size of the dot and it enhances by increasing the magnetic field. It appears that the exciton total energy strongly depends on the magnetic field for dots with big size. The magnetic field effect on the exciton size also has been studied. It is shown that the increase in the magnetic field leads to a reduction in the exciton size; due to magnetic field confinement, while the size of an exciton reach its bulk limit as the dot size increases. Moreover, it is shown that, if the dot radius is sufficiently large the oscillator strength saturates and it becomes insensitive to the magnetic field while the increase in the magnetic field gradually weakened the oscillator strength. I have calculated the ground-state distribution for both the electron and the hole. It is found that the localization of the electron/hole increases in the presence of a magnetic field. Moreover, the ground-state optical-absorption intensity is investigated. Finally, the dependence of the lowest five states of an exciton on both the dot radius and the magnetic field are discussed.

The energy spectra of low-lying states of an exciton in a single and a vertically coupled quantum dots are studied under the influence of a perpendicularly applied magnetic field. Calculations are made by using the method of numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian within the effective-mass approximation. We also calculated the binding energy of the ground and the excited states of an exciton in a single quantum dot and that in a vertically coupled quantum dot as a function of the dot radius for different vaJues of the distance and the magnetic field strength.

The exciton states in a CdTe quantum ring subjected to an external magnetic field containing a single magnetic impurity are investigated. We have used the multiband approximation which includes the heavy hole–light hole coupling effects. The electron–hole spin interactions and the s, p–d interactions between the electron, the hole and the magnetic impurity are also included. The exciton energy levels and optical transitions are evaluated using the exact diagonalization scheme. We show that due to the spin interactions it is possible to change the bright exciton state into the dark state and vice versa with the help of a magnetic field. We propose a new route to experimentally estimate the s, p–d spin interaction constants.

The magnetic state of a single magnetic ion (Mn2+) embedded in an individual quantum dot is optically probed using microspectroscopy. The fine structure of a confined exciton in the exchange field of a single Mn2+ ion (S=5/2) is analyzed in detail. The exciton-Mn2+ exchange interaction shifts the energy of the exciton depending on the Mn2+ spin component and six emission lines are observed at zero magnetic field. Magneto-optic measurements reveal that the emission intensities in both circular polarizations are controlled by the Mn2+ spin distribution imposed by the exchange interaction with the exciton, the magnetic field, and an effective manganese temperature which depends on both the lattice temperature and the density of photocreated carriers. Under magnetic field, the electron-Mn interaction induces a mixing of the bright and dark exciton states.

The exciton states in a CdTe semiconductor quantum ring containing a single magnetic impurity are considered in an external magnetic field. The electron-hole spin interaction and s,p-d interactions between electron, hole and magnetic impurity are also taken into account in the calculations. It is shown that due to the s,p-d spin interactions the ground state exciton energy splits into 12 doubly degenerated energy levels. The external magnetic field removes this degeneracy. A novel method is proposed here to determine the values of the strengths of s,p-d interactions. The optical spectrum of the system for different polarizations of the incident light and for different initial states of the magnetic impurity spin projection is also studied.

An analytical approach to the problem of the Wannier–Mott exciton in a semiconductor quantum well (QW) in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields is developed. The magnetic field is taken to lie in the heteroplanes while the electric field is directed perpendicular to the heteroplanes. Explicit dependencies of the energy levels and wave-functions of the exciton on the magnitudes of the fields for a wide range of the width of the QW are obtained. For the narrow QW, the results are valid for arbitrary electron and hole effective masses. In the case of intermediate and wide QWs, the adiabatic approximation implying the extreme difference of the electron and hole masses is used. In the intermediate QW, the states of the relative motion are the standard Coulomb states affected by the external fields while the states of the centre of mass are the size-quantized states in the QW. We focus particularly on the delocalized states caused by the external electric field and the motion of the excitons centre of mass in the magnetic field. These states are localized far away from the Coulomb centre. A strong influence of the boundaries of the wide QW on the delocalized exciton states is found to occur. Estimates of the expected values are made using typical parameters associated with GaAs QW.

The nonparabolicity of exciton dispersion due to the mixing of the ground and excited states of an exciton in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of its motion is considered. A model describing this effect is proposed and the nonparabolicity for an exciton in a CdTe crystal is calculated. The magnetic-field induced exciton nonparabolicity is compared with the effect caused by the nonparabolicity of the electron energy dispersion in the conduction band.

We report on spectroscopy of a single dopant atom in silicon by resonant tunneling between source and drain of a gated nanowire etched from silicon on insulator. The electronic states of this dopant isolated in the channel appear as resonances in the low temperature conductance at energies below the conduction band edge. We observe the two possible charge states successively occupied by spin-up and spin-down electrons under magnetic field. The first resonance is consistent with the binding energy of the neutral D0 state of an arsenic donor. The second resonance shows a reduced charging energy due to the electrostatic coupling of the charged D- state with electrodes. Excited states and Zeeman splitting under magnetic field present large energies potentially useful to build atomic scale devices.

Direct exciton states of cubic semiconductors in a high magnetic field are investigated taking into full account the degeneracy and anisotropy of the valence bands. The adiabatic method is used to decouple the components of the motion parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. One-dimensional Hamiltonians are obtained analytically for the various exciton states and selection rules for optical transitions are discussed. Accurate numerical values of the energy levels are given for H parallel to the (110) direction. The results obtained provide the first quantitative interpretation of the fine structure observed in high resolution measurements of magnetoabsorption in Ge.

The ground state energies of an exciton in a GaAs/Ga1-xAlxAs quantum well structure for perpendicular magnetic field of arbitrary strength are studied. The results show that the energy of the magneto exciton will be increased with the increase of quantum well width and magnetic field strength.

We studied exciton structures and the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a single carbon nanotube using micro-photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy under a magnetic field at low temperatures. A single sharp PL peak from the bright exciton state of a single carbon nanotube was observed under zero magnetic field, and the additional PL of dark exciton state appeared below the bright exciton peak under high magnetic fields. It was found that the split between the bright and dark exciton states is several millielectron volts at zero field. The tube diameter dependence of the splitting arises from the intervalley short-range Coulomb interaction.

We investigate theoretically the magnetoexciton states in semiconductor concentric quantum double rings using the multi-band effective mass theory. We find that a perpendicular magnetic field can lead to oscillations in the exciton energy which appear as kinks in the magneto-photoluminescence (PL) spectra as the magnetic field increases. The spatial distribution of the exciton over the rings depends sensitively on the thicknesses of the inner and outer rings. The tunneling coupling between the inner and outer rings and the heavy-hole and light-hole mixing results in different anticrossing behaviors. Exciton can be converted into a spatially separated type-II exciton by tuning the thickness, the inner and/or outer ring radius and the magnetic field. We show that this type I–type II transition is reflected in the oscillator strength of the PL spectrum which will be the experimental signature that will provide us with information about the spatial distribution of the exciton.

By embedding a layer of self-assembled quantum dots into a field-effect structure, we are able to control the exciton charge in a single dot. We present the results of photoluminescence experiments as a function of both charge and magnetic field. The results demonstrate a hierarchy of energy scales determined by quantization, the direct Coulomb interaction, the electron–electron exchange interaction, and the electron–hole exchange interaction. For excitons up to the triply charged exciton, the behavior can be understood from a model assuming discrete levels within the quantum dot. For the triply charged exciton, this is no longer the case. In a magnetic field, we discover a coherent interaction with the continuum states, the Landau levels associated with the wetting layer.

We report a microphotoluminescence study of the exciton and the biexciton localized in very elongated islands formed by well-width fluctuations in a thin CdTe/CdMgTe quantum well grown on a vicinal surface. The electron-hole exchange interaction in a local reduced symmetry splits the exciton states. The resulting transitions are linearly polarized along the two orthogonal principal axes of the island. The valence band mixing induced by the elongated shape of the potential leads to a strong polarization anisotropy and to the observation of dark exciton states under magnetic field. The biexciton-exciton transition reproduces all the fine structure of the exciton state including the transition of the biexciton to the dark exciton state.

A transformation of the dimensionality of excitonic states from 2D to 3D with increasing external electric field is observed in single GaAs/AlxGa1−x As quantum-well structures with asymmetric barriers. The binding energy of a 2D exciton remains constant over a wide range of variation of the field, since the decrease in the binding energy is compensated by increasingly larger penetration of the electronic wave function into the barrier layer, where the exciton binding energy is higher because the effective mass is larger and the dielectric constant of AlGaAs is lower than that of GaAs. When the maximum of the electron wave function is displaced into the barrier as the field increases, the exciton binding energy decreases. As the field increases further, a 2D exciton transforms into a quasi-3D exciton, with a heavy hole in the quantum well and an electron in a resonant above-barrier state. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. The quantum properties of topological insulator magnetic quantum rings formed by inhomogeneous magnetic fields are investigated using a series expansion method for the modified Dirac equation. Cycloid-like and snake-like magnetic edge states are respectively found in the bulk gap for the normal and inverted magnetic field profiles. The energy spectra, current densities and classical trajectories of the magnetic edge states are discussed in detail. The bulk band inversion is found to manifest itself through the angular momentum transition in the ground state for the cycloid-like states and the resonance tunneling effect for the snake-like states.

The influence of the static magnetic field on the edge states of finite zig-zag nanotubes has been explored theoretically by the tight-binding approximation. It was found that the magnetic field removes the degeneracy of the energy levels of the edge states. Investigation of the formation of new edge states by the magnetic field indicated the dependence of the number of these states on the length of a nanotube.
