A probabilistic technique for estimating the vulnerability of explosive surface objects by lightning has been proposed. It uses a combined criterion for initiation of upward streamer and leader discharges form the elements of the object and lightning diverters. This criterion takes into account the probabilistic nature of avalanche–streamer and streamer–leader transitions and also the trajectories of the lightning’s downward stepped leader and lightning current. It has been shown that, if the formation of the downward leader of incomplete streamer discharges from the elements of the object in an electric field is neglected (these discharges may set fire on explosive emissions), the probability of lightning-induced failure of the object is underestimated by several times compared with the calculated value.  相似文献

We have described a new probabilistic method for calculating and assessing lightning striking terrestrial explosive objects using a combined criterion for the emergence of upward streamer and leader discharges from the elements of the object being protected and lightning rods taking into account the probabilistic nature of the avalanche–streamer and streamer–leader transitions, the trajectories of a downward stepped lightning leader and lightning current. It has been shown that the disregard of possible formation of uncompleted streamer discharges from the elements of the object in the electric field of a downward lightning leader, which can ignite explosive emission, decreases the rated probability of the object being damaged by a lightning stroke by several times.  相似文献

Different electrostatic approximations have been proposed to calculate the streamer region without going in deep details of the behavior of density of particles under the effect of high electric fields; this kind of approximations have been used in numerical calculations of long spark gaps and lightning attachment. The simplifications of the streamer region are achieved by considering it to be a geometrical region with a constant geometrical shape. Different geometrical shapes have been used, such as cones or several parallel filaments. Afterward, to simplify the procedures, the streamer region was approximated by two constants, one denoted KQ, called the geometrical constant and in other cases K named as geometrical factor.However, when a voltage that varies with time is applied to an arrangement of electrodes (high voltage and grounded electrodes), the background electric field will change with time. Thus, if the background electric field is modified, the streamer zone could cover a larger or smaller area.With the aim of reducing the number of assumptions required in the calculation of long gap discharges, a new electrostatic model to calculate the streamer region is presented. This model considers a variable streamer zone that changes with the electric field variations. The three-dimensional region that fulfills the minimum electric field to sustain a streamer is identified for each time step, and the charge accumulated in that region is then calculated. The only parameter that is being used in the calculation is the minimum electric field necessary for the propagation of streamers.  相似文献

A lightning flash may interact with humans in several ways. The possible pathways of interactions are direct strike, side flash, touch voltage, step voltage, subsequent stroke, connecting leaders and shock waves. The permanent or the temporary injuries that a victim suffers depend, among other parameters, on the type of interaction through which the body is exposed to a lightning strike and the path and the strength of the electric current passing through the body. In addition to the effects of electric current passing through the body, strong light and shock waves may also interact with the body in various ways. In this paper, the different types of injuries that may result from a lightning strike are documented and they are summarized, from engineering rather than a medical perspective.  相似文献

The identification of the most vulnerable points on a given structure to be struck by lightning is an important issue on the design of a reliable lightning protection system. Traditionally, these lightning strike points are identified using the rolling sphere method, through an empirical correlation with the prospective peak return stroke current. However, field observations in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore have shown that the points where lightning flashes strike buildings also depend on the height and geometry of the structure. Since a lightning strike point is believed to be the place on a grounded structure where a propagating upward leader is first initiated, a physical leader inception model is used here to estimate the background electric field required to initiate a stable upward leader from the corners of some complex buildings. The computed location of the points from where leaders are incepted are compared with the damaged points on buildings struck by lightning. The observed lightning strike points coincide rather well with the corners of the buildings which are characterized by lower leader inception electric fields. Furthermore, it is found that the geometry of the buildings significantly influences the conditions necessary to initiate upward leaders and, therefore, the location of the most likely strike points.  相似文献

The goal of this work is to describe qualitatively the physics of processes which begin with an electron avalanche and finish in a lightning discharge. A streamer model is considered that is based on studies of the recently discovered processes occurring in the prestreamer region. The investigation and analysis of these processes enabled making the conclusion that they are, in essence, the attendant processes, which ensure the electron avalanche-to-streamer transition, and may be interpreted as a manifestation of properties of a double charge layer exposed to the external electric field. The pressing problems of physical processes which form a lightning discharge are considered from the standpoint of new ideas about the mechanism of the streamer formation and growth. Causes of the emergence of coherent super-high-frequency radiation of a leader and the neutron production in a lightning discharge are revealed that have not been explained so far in the theory of gas discharge. Based also on new ideas about the lightning discharge, a simple ball-lightning model, providing answers to almost allquestions formulated from numerous observations on the behavior of ball lightning, is offered, and the need of a new design of lightning protection instead of the traditional rod is discussed.  相似文献

As the threshold field strength for the breakdown in air significantly exceeds the maximum measured thundercloud strength 3 kV/cm/atm, the problem of lightning initiation remains unclear. According to the popular idea, lightning can be initiated from streamer discharges developed in the enhanced electric field in a vicinity of hydrometeors. To test the idea, we carry out numerical simulations of positive streamer development around charged water drops at air pressure typical at thundercloud altitudes and at different background fields, drop sizes and charges. With real drop sizes and charges, the electric field required for the streamer formation is stronger than the measured fields; therefore, second mechanism is required to amplify the local field.  相似文献

A simple mechanism for the propagation of an ionization wave in a dense gas due to the multiplication of background electrons in a nonuniform electric field is proposed. The mechanism does not depend on the sign of the field projection onto the streamer propagation direction. The streamer propagation is caused by the enhancement of the electric field at the streamer head. It is shown that, in a prebreakdown field, the intense multiplication of electrons takes place in both electropositive and electronegative gases. The prebreakdown multiplication can provide a fairly high density of background electrons; this allows one to treat the background as a continuous medium when considering streamer propagation as a multiplication wave. The initial ionization is enabled by the natural background of ionizing radiation and cosmic rays. An analytical expression for the velocity of the ionization front is obtained based on a simple equation for the multiplication of background electrons. This expression is in good agreement with numerical simulations performed within both a simple model of background electron multiplication and a more comprehensive drift-diffusion model. In particular, the drift-diffusion model predicts the propagation of the ionization front from a small-radius anode to the cathode due to the multiplication of background electrons. The velocity of the ionization wave front is calculated as a function of the electric field at the streamer head for helium, xenon, nitrogen, and sulfur hexafluoride. It is shown that some features of streamer propagation (e.g., its jerky motion) can be related to the recently found nonmonotonic dependence of ionization frequency on the electric field.  相似文献

An improved model for taking into account the effect of the soil ionization around grounding system under lightning strike is proposed in this paper. In this model, the soil ionization region is assumed to retain 7% of its pre-ionization resistivity, which is consistent with the experimental results on soil ionization found in literature (Trans. SA Inst. Electr. Eng. (1988) 63; AIEE Trans. 61 (1942) 349; Proc. IEE 121(2) (1974) 123) and our own laboratory experiments (Time domain modelling of the response of grounding systems subjected to lightning currents, Licenciate Thesis, Uppsala University, 2003). Compared with modelling the soil ionization as an increase in the size of the ground conductor, the model presented here will not overestimate the beneficial influence of the soil ionization in reducing the ground potential rise, especially in high resistivity soil. The model is also applied to study the transient behaviour of grounding conductors in stratified soil under lightning strike including soil ionization. It shows that making the grounding conductor to penetrate the lower resistivity soil layer could help to decrease the ground potential rise at the injection point several times.  相似文献

The electromagnetic pulses of rare long (order of seconds) repetitive lightning discharges near strike point (order of 100 m) are analyzed and compared to magnetic fields applied in standard clinical transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) practice. It is shown that the time-varying lightning magnetic fields and locally induced electric fields are in the same order of magnitude and frequency as those established in TMS experiments to study stimulated perception phenomena, like magnetophosphenes. Lightning electromagnetic pulse induced transcranial magnetic stimulation of phosphenes in the visual cortex is concluded to be a plausible interpretation of a large class of reports on luminous perceptions during thunderstorms.  相似文献

The absorption of a high-energy photon from the external cosmic gamma-ray background in the inner neutron star magnetosphere triggers the generation of a secondary electron-positron plasma and gives rise to a lightning—a lengthening and simultaneously expanding plasma tube. It propagates along magnetic fields lines with a velocity close to the speed of light. The high electron-positron plasma generation rate leads to dynamical screening of the longitudinal electric field that is provided not by charge separation but by electric current growth in the lightning. The lightning radius is comparable to the polar cap radius of a radio pulsar. The number of electron-positron pairs produced in the lightning in its lifetime reaches 1028. The density of the forming plasma is comparable to or even higher than that in the polar cap regions of ordinary pulsars. This suggests that the radio emission from individual lightnings can be observed. Since the formation time of the radio emission is limited by the lightning lifetime, the possible single short radio bursts may be associated with rotating radio transients (RRATs).  相似文献

A theoretical examination is made of the mechanism of corona formation for a positive point-plane gap in SF6 at 100 kPa. The impulse voltage applied has a rise time of 15 ns and peak value of 200 kV. Seed electrons are released 1 ns after the start of the voltage rise. For a 0.5-cm diameter positive sphere located 6.5 cm from a negative plane, the calculated circuit current initially consists of subnanosecond corona onset pulses, and then the current steadily rises to a maximum, as the voltage reaches a maximum, followed by a rapid fall in current. During the current rise a streamer moves out into the gap along a 100-μm channel, with the electric field in the streamer trail E>E*, where E* is the critical field where ionization equals attachment. The light output during the discharge is predicted to be a maximum at the anode with only a minor pulse of light at the streamer head, making it hard to detect. After the current maximum, recombination rapidly reduces the numbers of positive ions, negative ions, and electrons, but the net charge density remains constant and thus so does the electric field. The electric field is E~E* in the streamer trail, but has a sharp maximum, E≫E* at the head of the streamer trail. The origin of mid-gap precursors, observed when the streamer channel reilluminates after some 100 ns, is attributed to this field maximum in the remnant electric field. The evolution of positive ions, negative ions, and electrons is described by one-dimensional continuity equations, with the space-charge electric fields determined by the disk method. The effects of ionization, attachment, recombination, electron diffusion, and photoionization are all included. New numerical methods allow resolution of the streamer head and the anode fall region to be obtained with a 1-μm mesh, while following the streamer propagation for ~2 cm  相似文献

This paper introduces a new approach for streamer advance mechanism in dielectric liquid. The existing of bush-like streamer shape early and then a tree structure shape after that has been given an over view and definition by devising a breakdown index for dielectric liquid which reach a value of 25. The deviation of streamer velocity from low values of tens of meter per second, until several kilometer per second from bush-like shape, until complete breakdown has been discussed too. These different stages have been studied on an energy balance concepts. In this paper using energy balance analysis, different critical applied fields have been obtained. These values reach 2.18 MV/cm for one branch channel in bush-like streamer shape and 21.5 MV/cm, for tree streamer. After that, the initial streamer velocities concerning these stages have been introduced. From these analysis the dissociation of dielectric liquids starts when the streamer velocity reach the sound speed in air, 331 m/s. In addition, the dissociation field depends mainly on the physical values of the dielectric medium, such as density, and permittivity have been introduced. In this paper the dissociation starts at an electric field value of 21.5 MV/cm for nearly all dielectric liquids, This result is equal to tree streamer inception value, which can be considered as a new introduced finding. A new energy equation relating injected energy electric field, velocity and new deduced breakdown index in dielectric liquid has been devised. The streamer may stop or continue its advance until complete breakdown. According to many published data for streamer, there is no clear explanation for streamer stopping and continuing it advance. In this paper, the streamer must advance ahead of the bush zone in the gap toward the opposite electrode when the prospective electric field at 66% of the gap achieves a breakdown index of 25. This result can be considered as a new criterion for streamer growth until crossing the gap. These new equations and findings have been applied to several experimental works and achieve good results.  相似文献

A mechanism is analyzed of the electric field enhancement in a lightning leader up to the level permitting runaway of low-energy electrons. The ionization wave propagation in the preionized domain in front of the leader makes it possible to overcome the limitation imposed on the field intensity by transversal expansion of the leader front. By means of numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that, at the final stage of formation of a new leader step, generation of an electric field is possible in the channels of the streamer zone ahead of the new step with intensity sufficient for electron runaway and, consequently, for producing the X-ray and γ-ray pulses observed in correlation with the lightning leader steps.  相似文献

The formation of periodic plasma clots which form a discharge channel similar to bead lightning has been studied with a four-channel intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) camera simultaneously with the recording of voltage and current waveforms. It was found that a diffuse discharge was formed at the initial stage due to the development of a wide streamer. Runaway electrons were registered. Beads were formed as a result of the development of the spark leader after the diffuse stage. It was assumed that the diameter of the spark leader periodically changes in accordance with the change in the electric field strength in the spark leader head. As a result, narrow sections of the channel heat up more and glow brighter.  相似文献

The attachment of a lightning flash to a lightning conductor (or to any other structure) takes place through a connecting leader that rises from the structure towards the descending stepped leader of a lightning flash. The spatial separation between the tip of the stepped leader and the lightning conductor (or the grounded structure) at the initiation of the connecting leader is known as the striking distance. In this paper the striking distance of stepped leaders is derived as a function of conductor height, conductor radii and the prospective return stroke current. Based on these results the validity of the early streamer emission (ESE) hypothesis is discussed. According to the ESE hypothesis, the striking distance of a lightning conductor can be increased by the artificial initiation of streamers from a lightning conductor. The results cast doubt on the validity of the ESE hypothesis. This in turn calls for more experimental data and field validations before using the ESE hypothesis in standard lightning protection practice.  相似文献

流注放电作为自然界中闪电传播的预电离机制、高压输变线路间长空间间隙放电的重要初始阶段,在工业领域存在诸多潜在应用,近年来引起人们越来越多的关注.流注放电具有典型的多尺度、非线性的放电特征,实验观测中多呈现出分叉等不规则结构.为了研究其微观结构特性和行为特征,本文采用三维粒子仿真模型(PIC/MCC),着重研究了流注从针型正电极的起始和发展过程.模型采用了可变自适应网格、可变粒子权重以及并行计算等技术,有效地降低了三维粒子仿真的计算时间.通过调节针型电极上的施加电压幅值、改变气体组分及调整电极形状尺寸等,研究了放电参数变化对流注放电的分叉结构、半径等行为的影响.模拟结果表明:随着电压的升高,流注的半径及分叉数目增加;对比不同气体组分(纯氧以及不同比例氮氧混合气体),发现其对流注的分叉数目影响较为显著;针型电极结构直接影响了流注的起始时间和形貌.  相似文献

雷击近场等强电场环境下的磁场测量是电磁脉冲测量技术中的难点之一,由于输出端结构的径向非对称性,传统的环天线很难避免电场干扰。针对于此,研制了一种基于双环差分结构的脉冲磁场传感器,该传感器由双环天线和光传输系统组成。根据近场电磁场量的分布特性,双环天线选择平行镜像对称放置的方式,从而能够将终端电压区分为磁场响应分量和电场响应分量,再通过末端差分电路即可去除电场响应分量,得到纯净的磁场响应分量。试验表明,在邻近雷击环境模拟装置中,双环传感器相较于单环传感器具备更强的抗电场干扰能力,能够实现磁场的准确测量。  相似文献
