Constraints on the equation of state (EoS) for symmetric matter (equal neutron and proton numbers) have been extracted from energetic collisions of heavy ions over a range of energies. Collisions of neutron-deficient and neutron-rich heavy ions now provide initial constraints on the EoS of neutron-rich matter at subsaturation densities from isospin diffusions and neutron proton ratios. This article reviews the experimental constraints on the density dependence of symmetry energy at subsaturation density.

The properties of inhomogeneous neutron matter are crucial to the physics of neutron-rich nuclei and the crust of neutron stars. Advances in computational techniques now allow us to accurately determine the binding energies and densities of many neutrons interacting via realistic microscopic interactions and confined in external fields. We perform calculations for different external fields and across several shells to place important constraints on inhomogeneous neutron matter, and hence the large isospin limit of the nuclear energy density functionals that are used to predict properties of heavy nuclei and neutron star crusts. We find important differences between microscopic calculations and current density functionals; in particular, the isovector gradient terms are significantly more repulsive than in traditional models, and the spin-orbit and pairing forces are comparatively weaker.

We investigate many-body correlations caused by two-and three-body(2-, 3bd) forces. Shell-model effective interactions derived from ab initio methods(coupled-cluster method, no-core shell model) are adopted.Vlow-k potentials, based on many-body perturbation theory, are also tested, especially for their cut-off dependence. We compare the central, tensor and spin-orbit interactions from microscopic theory to the fitted interactions. After the inclusion of the three-body force, the matrix elements become fairly close to those fitted directly to experimental data. Calculations of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes are performed, to clarify the effects of 3bd forces, tensor, and spin-orbit interactions on the nuclear binding and excitation energies. We find that the 3bd force can influence the binding energies greatly, which also determines the drip line position, while its effect on excitation energies is not very pronounced. The spin-orbit force, which is part of the 2bd force, can affect the shell structure explicitly, at least for neutron-rich systems.

A relativistic mean field model is used to study the ground-state properties of neutron-rich nuclei in Ca isotopes. An additional isoscalar and isovector nonlinear coupling has been introduced in the relativistic mean field model, which could soften the symmetry energy, while keep the agreement with the experimental data. The sensitivity of proton and neutron density distributions and single particle states in Ca isotopes to the additional isoscalarisovector nonlinear coupling term is investigated. We found that the binding energies, the density distributions of single particle levels are strongly correlated with the density dependence of the symmetric energy in nuclear matter.

Starting from a Skyrme effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we calculate the properties of hot matter at densities up to a little beyond that of nuclear matter. We neglect effects associated with finite nuclear size, such as surface and Coulomb energies, but include all effects associated with the bulk properties of the neutron-proton matter over a range of proton concentrations. The region of coexistence of two distinct nuclear phases is mapped out, as a function of the average proton fraction of the two-phase mixture. We present the neutron and proton chemical potentials, and the densities and proton fractions of the two coexisting phases, as functions of density and temperature. The density dependence of the nuclear contribution to the pressure is given along isotherms for a range of proton fractions. Including electron, positron and photon contributions to the entropy, we calculate the density dependence of the pressure along adiabats, and discuss the distribution of the entropy among the components. Some information is also given about hot matter in β-equilibrium. Comparison is made with earlier work.

Heavy-ion experiments provide important data to test astrophysical models. The high-density equation of state can be probed in HI collisions and applied to the hot protoneutron star formed in core collapse supernovae. The parity radius experiment (PREX) aims to accurately measure the neutron radius of 208Pb with parity-violating electron scattering. This determines the pressure of neutron-rich matter and the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Competition between nuclear attraction and Coulomb repulsion can form exotic shapes called nuclear pasta in neutron star crusts and supernovae. This competition can be probed with multifragmentation HI reactions. We use large-scale semiclassical simulations to study nonuniform neutron-rich matter in supernovae. We find that the Coulomb interactions in astrophysical systems suppress density fluctuations. As a result, there is no first-order liquid-vapor phase transition. Finally, the virial expansion for low-density matter shows that the nuclear vapor phase is complex with significant concentrations of alpha particles and other light nuclei in addition to free nucleons.

The double neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions taken from two reaction systems using four isotopes of the same element, namely, the neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system over that in the more symmetric system, has the advantage of reducing systematically the influence of the Coulomb force and the normally poor efficiencies of detecting low energy neutrons. The double ratio thus suffers less systematic errors. Within the IBUU04 transport model the double neutron/proton ratio is shown to have about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy as the single neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system involved. The double neutron/proton ratio is therefore more useful for further constraining the symmetry energy of neutron-rich matter.

One of the major tasks of studying isospin physics via heavy ion collisions with neutron rich nuclei, is to explore the isospin dependence of in medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron rich nuclear matter, i.e., the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate energy heavy ion physics community during the last decade. Nowadays significant progress has been achieved in studying the low density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy, but the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy is still very uncertain. Theoretically, a number of observables have been proposed as sensitive probes to the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, studies of the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy is expected to be one of the main forefront research areas in nuclear physics in the near future. In this report, based on the transport model IBUU we have reviewed the major progress achieved in studying the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy and discussed future challenges in this field.

The investigation of direct reactions with exotic beams in inverse kinematics gives access to a wide field of nuclear structure studies in the region far off stability. The basic concept and the methods involved are briefly discussed. The present contribution will focus on the investigation of light neutron-rich halo nuclei. Such nuclei reveal a new type of nuclear structure, namely an extended neutron distribution surrounding a nuclear core. An overview on this phenomenon, and on the various methods which gave first evidence and qualitative confirmation of our present picture of halo nuclei, is given. To obtain more quantitative information on the radial shape of halo nuclei, elastic proton scattering on neutron-rich light nuclei at intermediate energies was recently investigated for the first time. This method is demonstrated to be an effective means for studying the nuclear matter distributions of such nuclei. The results on the nuclear matter radii of 6He and 8He, the deduced nuclear matter density distributions, and the significance of the data on the halo structure is discussed. The present data allow also a sensitive test of theoretical model calculations on the structure of neutron-rich helium isotopes. A few examples are presented. The investigation of few-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics may provide new and complementary information on nuclear structure, as well as astrophysical questions. The physics motivation and the experimental concept for such experiments, to be performed due to momentum matching reasons at low incident energies around 5–20 MeV/u at the new generation low energy radioactive beam facilities SPIRAL, PIAFE, etc., is briefly discussed.

Heavy-ion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, recent analyses of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the nuclear symmetry energy around the nuclear matter saturation density. We review this exciting result and discuss its implications on nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. In addition, we also review the theoretical progress on probing the high density behaviors of the nuclear symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams.

The isoscalar giant monopole resonances(ISGMRs)of hypernuclei_(AA)~(42)Ca,_(AA)~(122)Sn,and_(AA)~(210)Pb are investigated using a fully self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock plus random phase approximation method. The Skyrme-type forces,SGII,No.5 and SAAl,are adopted to describe the nucleon-nucleon,A hyperon-nucleon and A hyperon-A hyperon(AA)interactions, respectively. For a given hyperon fraction,we find that effects of AA interaction on the properties of infinite symmetric nuclear matter and finite hypernuclei are very small. The ISGMR strengths are shifted to the high energy region when two A are added into normal nuclei. The changes are from two parts, one is due to the mean field calculations, and the other is from the residual interaction associated with A hyperons. The constrained energies are increased by about 0.5-0.7MeV,which consequently enhances the effective incompressibility modulus of hypernuclei.

Density-dependent parametrization models of the nucleon-meson coupfing constants, including the isovector scalar δ-field, are applied to asymmetric nuclear matter. The nuclear equation of state (EOS) and the neutron star properties are studied in a relativistic Lagrangian density, using the relativistic mean field (RMF) hadron theory. It is known that the δ-field in the constant coupling scheme leads to a larger repulsion in dense neutron-rich matter and to a definite splitting of proton and neutron effective masses, finally influences the stability of the neutron stars. We use density-dependent models of the nucleon-meson couplings to study the properties of neutron star matter and to reexamine the (~-field effects in asymmetric nuclear matter. Our calculation shows that the stability conditions of the neutron star matter can be improved in presence of the δ-meson in the density-dependent models of the coupling constants. The EOS of nuclear matter strongly depends on the density dependence of the interactions.

A recent calculation of the nuclear energy density functional from chiral two- and three-nucleon forces is extended to the isovector terms pertaining to different proton and neutron densities. An improved density-matrix expansion is adapted to the situation of small isospin asymmetries and used to calculate in the Hartree-Fock approximation the density-dependent strength functions associated with the isovector terms. The two-body interaction comprises of long-range multi-pion exchange contributions and a set of contact terms contributing up to fourth power in momenta. In addition, the leading-order chiral three-nucleon interaction is employed with its parameters fixed in computations of nuclear few-body systems. With this input one finds for the asymmetry energy of nuclear matter the value A(?? 0) ? 26.5 MeV, compatible with existing semi-empirical determinations. The strength functions of the isovector surface and spin-orbit coupling terms come out much smaller than those of the analogous isoscalar coupling terms and in the relevant density range one finds agreement with phenomenological Skyrme forces. The specific isospin and density dependences arising from the chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions can be explored and tested in neutron-rich systems.

An analytical expression for sound of speed in asymmetric nuclear matter is acquired, based on the thermal Fermi-gas model and Skyrme-type nucleon-nucleon interactions. A low temperature high density approximation is adopted to the Fermi-Dirac integrals. The dependence of sound of apeed on the temperature and density bf nuclear matter under consideration ie investigated. For all the cases concerned, the so-called superluminosity is observed, the position of which is found to depend on the force parameters used and the asymmetric parameter of the nuclear matter. A possible way to avoid this causal-constraint violation is suggested.

In an attempt to extend the range of values of Kv, the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter, for which fits to the measured breathing-mode energies are possible, we investigate generalized Skyrme-type forces with a term that is both density- and momentum-dependent. Acceptable fits are found to be possible only for values of Kv in the range 215±15 MeV. For higher values fits are impossible, while for lower values fits are achieved only by introducing an unphysical collapse of nuclear matter. Thus our generalization of the Skyrme force does not permit a significantly wider range of values of Kv than that already given by force SkM1. However, with a view to having a more reliable estimate of the compressional properties of the highly neutron-rich nuclear matter that comprises the core of collapsed stars, we present a new version of this latter force giving a much better fit to the masses of neutron-rich nuclei. Comparison with force SkM1 also shows that the value of Kv extracted from the breathing-mode energies is essentially independent of the choice of effective mass. By providing a counter-example, we show that Kv cannot be extracted from masses and charge distributions alone. As for the third-order coefficient K′, we cannot be more precise than to say that it lies in the interval 700 ± 500 MeV.

The thermodynamic properties of hot, dense matter are examined in the density range 10?5 fm?3 ? n ? 0.35 fm?3 and the temperature range 0 ? T ? 21 MeV, for fixed lepton fractions Y? = 0.4, 0.3 and 0.2 and for matter in β-equilibrium with no neutrinos. Three phases of the matter are considered: the nuclei phase is assumed to consist of Wigner-Seitz cells with central nuclei surrounded by a nucleon vapor containing also α-particles; in the bubbles phase the cell contains a central spherical bubble of nucleon vapor surrounded by dense nuclear matter; the third phase is that of uniform nuclear matter. All are immersed in a sea of leptons (electrons and neutrinos) and photons. The nuclei and bubbles are described by a compressible liquid drop model which is self-consistent in the sense that all of the constituent properties — bulk, surface, Coulomb energies and other minor contributions — are calculated from the same nuclear effective hamiltonian, in this case the Skyrme 1' interaction. The temperature dependence of all of these energies is included, for bulk and surface energies by direct calculation, for the Coulomb energy by combining in a plausible way the usual electrostatic energy and the numerical results pertaining to a hot Coulomb plasma. Lattice contributions to the Coulomb energy are an essential ingredient, and lattice modifications to the nuclear translational energy are included. A term is constructed to allow also for the reduced density of excited states of light nuclei. All of these modifications incorporate necessary physical effects which modify significantly the matter properties in some regions.

Results of several experiments aimed at exploring the nuclear spatial structure of neutron-rich He and Li isotopes are presented and briefly discussed. The study of the density distributions in these nuclei by small-angle proton elastic scattering at intermediate energy is considered in more detail. The performed investigations allow one to obtain information on the total matter distributions, radii of the matter, neutron and proton distributions, effective and internal core sizes, halo sizes, and spatial correlations of the halo nucleons in the studied nuclei.
