The dispersion relation is obtained for a surface plasmon propagating parallel to the grooves of a large amplitude grating. Two variants of the Rayleigh method arc used: the first requires the evaluation of the zeros of a determinant; the second yields the dispersion relation in terms of the solution of a matrix eigenvalue problem. The dispersion relations are solved numerically for a sinusoidal and for a symmetric sawtooth grating profile, yielding in each case an infinity of discrete branches.  相似文献

Whereas periodic gratings enable us to couple light into a surface plasmon polariton only at a specific angle and wavelength, we show here that quasiperiodic gratings enable the coupling of light at multiple wavelengths and angles. The quasiperiodic grating can be designed in a systematic manner using the dual-grid method, thereby enabling us to control the coupling strength and grating dimensions. We verified the method experimentally by efficiently coupling light into a surface plasmon from several different illumination angles using a single quasiperiodic grating.  相似文献

The dispersion and damping of the surface plasmons are calculated for a free-electron model of Al. At large wave-vector the frequency of the surface plasmons approaches that of the bulk plasmons. Their damping remains quite small up to a wave-vector close to the bulk plasmon cut-off. The change in zero-point energy of the plasmons is calculated, and it gives a large positive contribution to the surface energy.  相似文献

The dispersion relation for a surface plasmon, propagating across a corrugated metal film on a dielectric substrate, is obtained by the method of reduced Rayleigh equations. It is found that the surface plasmon dispersion curve has an infinite number of branches. Numerical solutions of the dispersion relation are obtained for a film, characterized by a free-electron metal dielectric function and a sinusoidal profile function.  相似文献

The collective excitation of surface plasmons in a massless Dirac plasma (e.g., graphene) half-space (bounded by air) is investigated using a relativistic quantum fluid model. The unique features of such surface waves are discussed and compared with those in a Fermi plasma. It is found that in contrast to Fermi plasmas, the long-wavelength surface plasmon frequency (ω) in massless Dirac plasmas is explicitly nonclassical, i.e., ω1/?, where h=2π? is the Planck's constant. Besides some apparent similarities between the surface plasmon frequencies in massless Dirac plasmas and Fermi plasmas, several notable differences are also found and discussed. Our findings elucidate the properties of surface plasmons that may propagate in degenerate plasmas where the relativistic and quantum effects play a vital role.  相似文献

The second-order processes of optical-rectification and photoconduction are well known and widely used to produce ultrafast electromagnetic pulses in the terahertz frequency domain. We present a new form of rectification that relies on the excitation of surface plasmons in metal films deposited on a shallow grating. Multiphoton ionization and ponderomotive acceleration of electrons in the enhanced evanescent field of the surface plasmons results in a femtosecond current surge and emission of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. Using gold, this rectification process is third or higher-order in the incident field.  相似文献

The surface plasmon resonance effects in porous gold (por-Au) films—nanocomposite porous films containing an ensemble of disordered gold nanoparticles—have been investigated by modulation-polarization spectroscopy. Por-Au films have been obtained by pulsed laser deposition (using a direct particle flow from an erosion torch formed by a YAG:Nd3+ laser in argon). The spectral and angular dependences of the polarization difference ρ(λ, θ) of internal-reflection coefficients of s- and p-polarized radiation in the Kretschmann geometry and the spectral dependences of isotropic reflection angles at ρ(θ) = 0 are measured. Two types of surface plasmon resonance are found: one occurs on isolated nanoparticles (dipole and multipole modes), and the other is due to the dipole–dipole interaction of neighboring nanoparticles. The frequency of electron plasma oscillations for the nanoparticle ensemble and the frequencies and decay parameters of resonances are determined. Dispersion relations for the radiative and nonradiative modes are presented. The negative sign of the dispersion branch of nonradiative modes of dipole–dipole interaction is explained by the spatial dispersion of permittivity. The relationships between the formation conditions of the films, their structure, and established resonance parameters (determining the resonant-optical properties of films) are discussed.  相似文献

The dielectric response of a small metal particle to a perturbing potentialv L =r L Y LM e iωt is considered within the random phase approximation (RPA). The static dielectric polarizability is found and the size dependence of the surface plasmon frequencies are then determined from sum rule calculations. When the particle radiusa is large compared to the Thomas-Fermi screening lengthr 0 the RPA equation is transformed into a form appropriate for an analytical solution. 等离子体激元(surface plasmon polaritons, SPP)因其独特的光学和物理特性, 使其具有诸如透射增强和局域共振等一系列新颖现象, 已成为当前国内外学者研究的热点. 本文对基于类表面等离子体激元(Spoof Surface Plasmons, SSP)的矩形金属光栅色散特性和模式分布进行了研究. 利用本征函数法并结合场匹配条件, 获得了矩形栅表面SSP的场表达式、色散关系和模式分布, 并通过电磁仿真进行了验证. 在此基础上分析了矩形栅各参数对SSP色散及模式分布的影响, 研究结果表明: 由本征函数法获得的SSP色散特性与仿真结果基本符合; 增大金属栅高度或减小排列周期能减小SSP的相速度; 而增大金属栅周期占空比能在一定程度上拓展SSP与电子束互作用的带宽; 改变金属盖板高度对慢波SSP色散模式基本没有影响; 减小金属栅侧面宽度能增大模式之间的间隔, 从而能有效避免模式竞争的发生. 本文对基于SSP的矩形金属光栅色散特性的研究将为进一步研究SSP与电子束的相互作用, 形成高效、宽带的新型太赫兹源奠定良好的理论基础.  相似文献

Coupling of surface plasmon polaritons to radiation modes by use of a one-dimensional subwavelength dielectric grating on a thin metal slab is discussed. The surface plasmon waves obtained in Kretschmann configuration are resonant outcoupled to radiation modes by using a subwavelength dielectric grating. A peak outcoupling efficiency is predicted to be 74.57% with rigorous coupled-wave analysis. In addition, potential applications of these results in the design and improvement of various optoelectronic devices, such as polarizers, wavelength filters and biochemical sensors are discussed.  相似文献

The collective oscillations of a 2D quantum well electron plasma embedded in a semi-infinite host plasma medium (at a distancez0from the surface) are analyzed here, based on an explicit inversion of the joint dielectric function of the combined system in position representation in closed form. The hydrodynamic model of the electron gas is used to study the surface-plasmon dispersion relation for diffuse reflection of electrons at the surface. A previous treatment is generalized to the case of a metal bounded by a dielectric medium. The spectrum of electromagnetic (EM) radiation from two-dimensional(2D) plasmons in a semiconductor-dielectric structure with metal grating has been calculated in a strict electromagnetic approach. It is shown that radiation frequency and linewidth vary over a broad range of magnitude as a function of the grating parameters. The radiative decay linewidth is found to be two orders of magnitude larger than expected from the perturbation theory. Comparison of the results with previously published experimental data on 2D plasmons in GaAs heterostructures makes us conclude that the main contribution to the experimental decay linewidth arises from dielectric losses in the layers of the structure.  相似文献

We introduce a defect into a semi-infinite layered electron gas by changing the density on one layer. The interaction of surface plasmons and those localized around the defect are studied by calculating the density-density correlation function.
