Formulas for zonal polynomials

New integral and differential formulas for zonal polynomials are proved. As illustrations, zonal polynomials corresponding to partitions of two parts are computed. A method is presented, based on a certain partial differential operator, for expressing an orthogonally invariant polynomial as a linear combination of zonals. Zonal polynomials are expressed as linear combinations of well-known symmetric polynomials.     

Aspects of compact quantum group theory

We show that if a compact quantum semigroup satisfies certain weak cancellation laws, then it admits a Haar measure, and using this we show that it is a compact quantum group. Thus, we obtain a new characterization of a compact quantum group. We also give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the Haar measure of a compact quantum group to be faithful, in the case that its coordinate -algebra is exact. A representation is given for the linear dual of the Hopf -algebra of a compact quantum group, and a functional calculus for unbounded linear functionals is derived.

     

Bayes empirical Bayes estimation of a poisson mean

In the empirical Bayes (EB) decision problem consisting of squared error estimation of a Poisson mean, a prior distribution λ is placed on the gamma family of prior distributions to produce Bayes EB estimators which are admissible. A subclass of such estimators is shown to be asymptotically optimal (a.o.). The results of a Monte Carlo study are presented to demonstrate the favorable a.o. property of the Bayes EB estimators in comparison with other competitors.     

Bayes empirical Bayes estimation for discrete exponential families

Bayes-empiric Bayes estimation of the parameter of certain one parameter discrete exponential families based on orthogonal polynomials on an interval (a, b) is introduced. The resulting estimator is shown to be asymptotically optimal. The application of this method to three special distributions, the binomial, Poisson and negative binomial, is discussed.The first author was supported by NSF grant DCR-8504620.     

On the number of partitions with distinct even parts

Let ped(n) be the number of partitions of n wherein even parts are distinct (and odd parts are unrestricted). We obtain many congruences for ped(n)mod2 and mod4 by the theory of Hecke eigenforms.     

On the Absolute Continuity of Gaussian Measures on Locally Compact Groups

This note discusses the topological necessary and sufficient conditions for a locally compact connected group to admit a Gaussian measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure.     

On the number of rectangulations of a planar point set

We investigate the number of different ways in which a rectangle containing a set of n noncorectilinear points can be partitioned into smaller rectangles by n (nonintersecting) segments, such that every point lies on a segment. We show that when the relative order of the points forms a separable permutation, the number of rectangulations is exactly the (n+1)st Baxter number. We also show that no matter what the order of the points is, the number of guillotine rectangulations is always the nth Schröder number, and the total number of rectangulations is O(n²⁰/n⁴).     

紧拓扑半群上概率测度卷积序列的极限性质

本文讨论紧拓扑半群上概率测度卷积序列的若干重要极限性质．在第１节中，我们讨论测度集的代数结构与其支撑集代数结构的关系．第２节的定理１，通过支撑集的代数结构给出组合收敛测度序列的一个极限定理．在定理２中我们讨论独立同分布时的情形，建立了一类紧半群上的Ｋａｗａｄａ－Ｉｔ型结果．这些定理推广了紧群、紧交换半群、紧Ｌ－Ｘ半群上一些相应的结论．     

A note on Bayes empirical Bayes estimation by means of Dirichlet processes

Bayes estimators are derived by means of the Dirichlet process hyperprior approach for general empirical Bayes problems. For any sample size, these estimators are expressed concisely as ratios of two multidimensional integrals. A numerical example on Poisson sampling is given.     

Bayes minimax estimation of multiple Poisson parameters

For the p-variate Poisson mean, under the sum of weighted squared error losses, weights being reciprocals of variances, a class of proper Bayes minimax estimates dominating the usual estimate, namely the sample mean is produced. An example is given to illustrate this. The interrelation of our results with those of Clevenson and Zidek is pointed out.     

Generalizing the Quinn–Wójs theorem on distinct multiplets of composite Fermions

The combinatorial tool of generating functions for restricted partitions is used to generalize a quantum physics theorem relating distinct multiplets of different angular momenta in the composite Fermion model of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Specifically, if g_ℓ(N,M) denotes the number of distinct multiplets of angular momentum ℓ and total angular momentum M, we prove that

where the sum is taken over all positive divisors of N and L(k)=kℓ-kN/2+3k/2-N+N/(2k)-1/2. The original Quinn–Wójs theorem results when k=1 and it appears that this generalization will be useful in further investigations of nuclear shells modeling elementary particle interactions when the particles are clustered together.     

On the number of polynomials of small house

Suppose that ɛ is a positive number, and letd be a sufficiently large positive integer. We consider a set of monic polynomials of degreed with integer coefficients and roots lying in the disk of radiusd ^ɛ/d. We prove that the number of such polynomials is less than exp(d ^2/3+ɛ). On the unknotting number of minimal diagrams

Answering negatively a question of Bleiler, we give examples of knots where the difference between minimal and maximal unknotting number of minimal crossing number diagrams grows beyond any extent.

     

Complexity penalized support estimation

We consider the estimation of the support of a probability density function with iid observations. The estimator to be considered is a minimizer of a complexity penalized excess mass criterion. We present a fast algorithm for the construction of the estimator. The estimator is able to estimate supports which consists of disconnected regions. We will prove that the estimator achieves minimax rates of convergence up to a logarithmic factor simultaneously over a scale of Hölder smoothness classes for the boundary of the support. The proof assumes a sharp boundary for the support.
