We have made an attempt to describe the octonion formulation of Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theory of dyons in terms of 2×2 Zorn vector matrix realization. As such, we have discussed the U(1) e ×U(1) m Abelian gauge theory and U(1)×SU(2) electroweak gauge theory and also the SU(2) e ×SU(2) m non-Abelian gauge theory in term of 2×2 Zorn vector matrix realization of split octonions. It is shown that SU(2) e characterizes the usual theory of the Yang Mill’s field (isospin or weak interactions) due to presence of electric charge while the gauge group SU(2) m may be related to the existence of ’t Hooft-Polyakov monopole in non-Abelian Gauge theory. Accordingly, we have obtained the manifestly covariant field equations and equations of motion.  相似文献

It is shown that the Euler invariant type action of an O(d) gauge theory in d dimensions is a surface term and becomes the (d − 1)-dimensional gauge theory of gravitation. Its Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction gives a theory which contains the ordinary Einstein gravity.  相似文献

Two topics of lattice gauge theory are reviewed. They include string tension and β-function calculations by strong coupling Hamiltonian methods for SU(3) gauge fields in 3 + 1 dimensions, and a 1/N-expansion for discrete gauge and spin systems in all dimensions. The SU(3) calculations give solid evidence for the coexistence of quark confinement and asymptotic freedom in the renormalized continuum limit of the lattice theory. The crossover between weak and strong coupling behavior in the theory is seen to be a weak coupling but non-perturbative effect. Quantitative relationships between perturbative and non-perturbative renormalization schemes are obtained for the O(N) nonlinear sigma models in 1 + 1 dimensions as well as the range theory in 3 + 1 dimensions. Analysis of the strong coupling expansion of the β-function for gauge fields suggests that it has cuts in the complex 1/g2-plane. A toy model of such a cut structure which naturally explains the abruptness of the theory's crossover from weak to strong coupling is presented. The relation of these cuts to other approaches to gauge field dynamics is discussed briefly. The dynamics underlying first order phase transitions in a wide class of lattice gauge theories is exposed by considering a class of models-P(N) gauge theories - which are soluble in the N → ∞ limit and have non-trivial phase diagrams. The first order character of the phase transitions in Potts spin systems for N #62; 4 in 1 + 1 dimensions is explained in simple terms which generalizes to P(N) gauge systems in higher dimensions. The phase diagram of Ising lattice gauge theory coupled to matter fields is obtained in a 1N expansion. A one-plaquette model (1 time-0 space dimensions) with a first-order phase transitions in the N → ∞ limit is discussed.  相似文献

We do mean-field perturbation theory for U(1) lattice gauge theory in the axial gauge, and evaluate corrections from fluctuations up to fourth order for the free energy and plaquette energy. Comparing with similar results previously obtained in the Feynman gauge we find, to those orders studied, a gauge dependence of the size of the first correction term neglected with one exception. This gauge dependence decreases rapidly as the order of the approximation is increased. To any finite order, results in axial gauge are better approximations than results in the Feynman gauge. We speculate why. Assuming it to be generally true, we evaluate the first correction beyond the one-loop mean-field approximation to the free energy of SU(2) gauge theory with Wilson action in the axial gauge. This correction brings the mean-field result very close to Monte Carlo results for β > 1.6. It also makes the mean-field result identical, within a narrow margin, to ressumed strong coupling results in the interval 1.6 < β < 2.4, thus showing the absence of a phase transition. For both groups studied, we find that the asymptotic series of mean-field perturbation theory give much better approximations than do ordinary weak coupling series.  相似文献

We discuss a D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of Bonora-Tonin’s superfield formalism and derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory. To pay our homage to Victor I. Ogievetsky (1928–1996), who was one of the inventors of Abelian 2-form (antisymmetric tensor) gauge field, we go a step further and discuss the above D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of BRST formalism and establish that the existence of the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions is the hallmark of any arbitrary p-form gauge theory (discussed within the framework of BRST formalism).  相似文献

It is shown that all possible N sheeted coverings of the cylinder are contained in type IIA matrix string theory as non-trivial gauge field configurations. Using these gauge field configurations as backgrounds the large N limit is shown to lead to the type IIA conformal field theory defined on the corresponding Riemann surfaces. The sum over string diagrams is identified as the sum over non-trivial gauge backgrounds of the SYM theory.  相似文献

We show, using linear response theory, how plasma oscillations and screening in quark-gluon plasma can be computed in perturbation theory in a gauge covariant manner. Using this method we calculate the damping constant of color electric plasma oscillations in a Colomb gauge and show that the result agrees with an earlier calculation in the A0 = 0 gauge.  相似文献

We propose a constraint on the noncommutative gauge theory with U(N) gauge group which gives rise to a noncommutative version of the SU(N) gauge group. The baryon operator is also constructed.  相似文献

We elaborate on the dynamics of noncommutative two-dimensional gauge field theories. We consider U(N) gauge theories with fermions in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation. Noncommutativity leads to a rather non-trivial dependence on theta (the noncommutativity parameter) and to a rich dynamics. In particular the mass spectrum of the noncommutative U(1) theory with adjoint matter is similar to that of ordinary (commutative) two-dimensional large-NSU(N) gauge theory with adjoint matter. The noncommutative version of the ?t Hooft model receives a non-trivial contribution to the vacuum polarization starting from three-loops order. As a result the mass spectrum of the noncommutative theory is expected to be different from that of the commutative theory.  相似文献

To make the gauge field theory foundation of the topological current of p-branes introduced in our previous work, we present a novel topological tensor current in SO(N) gauge field theory. This non-Abelian gauge field tensor current is the straightforward generalization of the Chern-Simons topological current of strings. By making use of the SO(N) gauge potential decomposition theory and the φ-mapping topological current theory, it is proved that the p-brane is created at every isolated zero of the Clifford vector field \(\overrightarrow{\phi }(x)\) and the charges carried by p-branes are topologically quantized and labelled by the winding number of the φ-mapping.  相似文献

Based on our previous work on the differential geometry for the closed string double field theory, we construct a Yang-Mills action which is covariant under O(D,D) T-duality rotation and invariant under three-types of gauge transformations: non-Abelian Yang-Mills, diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetries. In double field formulation, in a manifestly covariant manner our action couples a single O(D,D) vector potential to the closed string double field theory. In terms of undoubled component fields, it couples a usual Yang-Mills gauge field to an additional one-form field and also to the closed string background fields which consist of a dilaton, graviton and a two-form gauge field. Our resulting action resembles a twisted Yang-Mills action.  相似文献

The SO(32) theory, in the limit where it is an open superstring theory, is completely specified in the light-cone gauge as a second-quantized string theory in terms of a “matrix string” model. The theory is defined by the neighborhood of a 1 + 1-dimensional fixed point theory, characterized by an Abelian gauge theory with type IB Green-Schwarz form. Non-orientability and SO(32) gauge symmetry arise naturally, and the theory effectively constructs an orientifold projection of the (weakly coupled) matrix type IIB theory (also discussed herein). The fixed point theory is a conformal field theory with boundary, defining the free string theory. Interactions involving the interior of open and closed strings are governed by a twist operator in the bulk, while string endpoints are created and destroyed by a boundary twist operator.  相似文献

We propose a new condition “extended naturalness” which should be satisfied by any physically sensible gauge theory. In order that a theory is extended-natural, all discrete quantities observed in low energies must be stable against variations of discrete parameters of the theory defined in large mass scales. We find that SU(N) gauge models become extended-natural when we choose appropriate fermion representations. Further, if N is a multiple of 8, the models turn out to be good examples of complementary gauge theories.  相似文献

Motivated by developments for many-particle quantum systems, a Monte Carlo method for solving Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories without fermions is presented in which a stochastic random walk is guided by a trial wave function. To the extent that a substantial portion of the local structure of the theory can be incorporated in the trial function, the method offers significant advantages relative to existing techniques. The method is applicable to the study of SU(N) lattice gauge theories, and its utility is demonstrated by solving the compact U(1) gauge theory in three spatial dimensions.  相似文献

Using the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators and adopting similar procedures as for the theory for quantizing a gauge field, we derive the Drummond-Gardiner positive P-representation directly from the Glauber-Sudarshan P-representation. The analogy between the extra phase-space dimensions in the positive P-representation and the gauge transformation freedoms for gauge field quantization is pointed out.  相似文献

We obtain the Seiberg-Witten geometry for four-dimensional N = 2 gauge theory with gauge group SO(2Nc) (Nc ⩽ 5) with massive spinor and vector hypermultiplets by considering the gauge symmetry breaking in the N = 2 E6 theory with massive fundamental hypermultiplets. In a similar way the Seiberg-Witten geometry is determined for N = 2 SU(Nc) (Nc ⩽ 6) gauge theory with massive antisymmetric and fundamental hypermultiplets. Whenever possible we compare our results expressed in the form of ALE fibrations with those obtained by geometric engineering and brane dynamics, and find a remarkable agreement. We also show that these results are reproduced by using N = 1 confining phase superpotentials.  相似文献

The Migdal renormalization group approach is applied to a finite temperature lattice gauge theory. Imposing the periodic boundary condition in the timelike orientation, the phase structure of the finite temperature lattice gauge system with a gauge groupG in (d+1)-dimensional space is determined by two kinds of recursion equations, describing spacelike and timelike correlations, respectively. One is the recursion equation for ad-dimensional gauge system with the gauge groupG, and the other corresponds to ad-dimensional spin system for which the effective theory is described by the nearest neighbor interaction of the Wilson lines. Detailed phase structure is investigated for theSU(2) gauge theory in (3+1)-dimensional space. Deconfinement phase transition is obtained. Using the recursion equation for the three dimensional spin system of the Wilson lines, it is shown that the flow of the renormalization group trajectories leads to a phase transition of the three dimensional Ising model.  相似文献

We derive the general formula for the supertrace of the quartic mass matrix in a general supersymmetric gauge theory, with arbitrary representations for the chiral multiplets. This formula clarifies the non-renormalization theorems in presence of gauge interactions and gives “extended renormalization theorems” for N = 2 and N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. In particular we find the known result that gren = gbare for the N = 4 theory and the new result mren = mbare for the N = 2 gauge interactions of massive hypermultiplets. We give arguments to the extent that the latter non-renormalization theorem persists to all orders in perturbation theory.  相似文献
