A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary smectic C (TGBC) to smectic blue phases (BPSm) is observed in a chiral compound (S)- or (R)-1-methyloctyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3-fluoro-4-hexadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that a TGBC phase has been found to occur under smectic blue phases in the absence of the twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) phase. These phases are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering.  相似文献

We synthesised a series of rod-like mesogens with a (S)-2-methylbutyl-(S)-lactate unit in the chiral chain that exhibited extremely wide temperature ranges in the TGBA and TGBC* phases. TGB phases were identified, based on typical textures in confined samples and in free-standing films, by Grandjean-Cano texture and by NMR studies on a deuterium-labelled isotopomer. A sufficiently high electric or magnetic field transformed the TGBA and TGBC* phases into their respective SmA and SmC* phases, the TGB structures being restored within some 20-30 minutes. Therefore values of the spontaneous polarisation and spontaneous tilt angle, when measured under a sufficiently high field, gave evidence of the properties of the SmC* phase. Temperature dependencies of relaxation frequency, dielectric strength, selective reflection and layer spacing showed anomalies at a certain temperature within the TGBC* phase range. Also, changes in textures, as well as in 2H-NMR spectra, occurred at this same temperature. These results suggest the existence of two TGBC* phases.  相似文献

The electrical properties of frustrated twist grain boundary (TGB) phase are a matter of curiosity. Some studies have indicated the existence of soft and Goldstone modes in TGBA and TGBC* phases respectively. However, the experimental results are still not very conclusive. In the present work, we report dielectric studies of wide temperature range TGBA and TGBC* phases of an optically active dimeric compound 4‐n‐decyloxy‐4′‐(cholesteryloxycarbonyl‐1‐butyloxy) chalcone in the frequency range of 1 Hz to 35 MHz for the planar and homeotropic anchoring of the molecules. Two different relaxation processes have been detected for the planar anchoring of molecules in the TGBA and TGBC* phases. The soft mode like behaviour is obtained due to tilt fluctuation of molecules in the megahertz region for both TGBA and TGBC* phases. Goldstone mode like behaviour due to phase fluctuation of molecules has been detected for the TGBC* phase in the low frequency region (~200–300 Hz). Activation energies for DC conductivity have also been determined for various phases of the material.  相似文献

A diarylethane alpha-chloro ester was mixed with a chiral dopant of high helical twisting power at variable concentration to study its capability for induction of twist grain boundary phases. With increasing concentration of the chiral dopant, TGBA* and TGBC* phases were observed with a rather broad region of existence. In contrast to homeotropic alignment, planar boundary conditions seem to enhance the phase stability of the TGB phases, resulting in metastable TGB states and phase coexistence with the respective smectic phases. The phase growth of SmA*/SmC* out of the TGBA*/TGBC* state was studied under isothermal conditions as a function of temperature and concentration of the chiral dopant.  相似文献

A new series of lactic acid derivatives has been prepared with molecular cores consisting of two laterally substituted biphenyls connected by an ester group. The compounds exhibited the TGBA phase in a broad temperature range. In addition, for some compounds, a narrow blue phase was found above the TGBA phase on cooling from the isotropic phase. Except for the compound with the shortest chain, the TGBC phase appeared below the TGBA phase. The low temperature SmC* phase existed within the interval up to 80 K, including the overcooled state, which was down to room temperature. In the compounds studied a strong pre-transitional phenomenon took place manifested as a broad peak on the differential scanning calorimetry plot in the isotropic phase. The phases were established on the basis of a planar sample and free-standing film microscope observation. Small angle X-ray diffraction measurements provided information about layer spacing, d, and confirmed the phase assignment. Dielectric spectroscopy revealed the soft and Goldstone modes in the respective TGBA and SmC* phases.  相似文献

A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary Sa phase to blue phases was observed in a chiral compound (R)- or (S)-1-methylheptyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3'-fluoro-4'-octadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolan-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that blue phases have been found to occur above the TGBA phase in the absence of a cholesteric phase. These phases were characterized by microscopic observation, differential scanning calorimetry, the contact method and study of the racemic system.  相似文献

High resolution adiabatic scanning calorimetry (ASC) was employed to study the phase behaviour exhibited by the chiral liquid crystal material (R)-1-methylheptyl 3-fluoro-4- (3-fluoro-4-octadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate (FH/FH/HH-18BTMHC). We report on the heat capacity of the different phases and phase transitions as well as the enthalpy changes of the material showing a phase sequence Cr-SmC*-TGBC-TGBA-BPI-BPIIBPIII-I. While the presence of the BPI phase was observed in previous DSC studies only on cooling the sample, our ASC measurements detected this phase also in the heating runs at sufficiently slow scanning rates. Indications of smectic order still present in the blue phases, as recently reported from X-ray scattering experiments, are also observed.  相似文献

Two members of a chiral tolane series exhibiting a new TGBA phase and a S*C ferroelectric phase have been investigated by means of electro-optical measurements. These materials belong to the optically active series of (R)-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-4'-(4'- alkyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoyloxy) tolanes and are the tetra- and octa-decyloxy derivatives. Due to the large pitch values in these TGBA mesophases, complete unwinding of the helix is found to be possible in thick cells. This also allows measurements of the electroclinic properties, such as the electric field induced tilt angle, response time, and the ferroelectric properties in the S*C phase.  相似文献

Research into the structures and properties of frustrated liquid crystal phases continues apace. A number of new twist grain boundary phases have been discovered, of particular interest are those with their rod-like molecules inclined to the layer planes, i.e. the TGBC phases. A new anticlinic TGBC phase has also been discovered complimenting the synclinic TGBC phases. In addition a number of smectic blue phases (BPSm) have recently been discovered.  相似文献

A liquid crystal ( HZL 7/* ) containing an (S)‐2‐methylbutyl‐(S)‐lactate unit in the chiral chain, is investigated by means of 2H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in order to obtain information on its orientational order, its molecular structure and the effect of external magnetic fields on the supramolecular structure of its phases. This mesogen presents very peculiar mesomorphic properties and exhibits frustrated TGBA* and TGBC* phases in a wide temperature range up to 60 °C, as well as an additional phase transition from TGBC1* to TGBC2*. 2H NMR measurements show, for the first time, a peculiar magnetic field effect in unwinding the supramolecular structure of both the TGBA* and TGBC* phases. This effect is particularly evident at higher magnetic fields, while different behaviour is observed at lower magnetic fields. This indicates that the supramolecular structure is very sensitive to magnetic fields of the order of 1 Tesla. Moreover, the analysis of the 2H and 13C NMR spectra of HZL 7/* allow us to obtain several structural properties, such as the tilt angle of the TGBC* phases and the local orientational order parameters referred to the phenyl and biphenyl fragments. This is the first structural characterization of the frustrated phases of these complexes by means of NMR.  相似文献

High resolution calorimetric studies have been carried out on the chiral compound methylheptyloxydifluorooctyloxybenzoyloxytolane (8BTF2O1M7). The tilt tendency is greater in this compound than in several other structurally similar fluorinated tolane liquid crystals, and it exhibits tilted chiral smectic C(SmC*) and tilted twist-grain-boundary (TGBC) phases but not the untilted SmA or TGBA phases. The data confirm the presence of two tilted TGBC phases denoted TGB1 and TGB2. The TGB1-TGB2 first-order transition exhibits considerable hysteresis and a very small latent heat. There is no rounded excess heat capacity peak in the cholesteric N* phase associated with the non-transitional evolution of a chiral line liquid N*L, although such a feature has been observed in other fluorinated tolanes with a smaller tilt tendency.  相似文献

Two series of trimer liquid crystals were investigated that contain a biphenylyl central group and two cholesteryl or dihydrocholesteryl terminal mesogenic groups. Only compounds with even spacers were investigated. The dihydrocholesteryl-containing trimers show a triply intercalated smectic A (SmA) phase when the spacer lengths are greater than 8, whereas the cholesteryl-containing trimers exhibit this triply intercalated SmA phase when the spacer lengths are more than 6. With shorter spacers, a twist grain boundary C* (TGBC*) phase was found. This is revealed by the formation of a typical dotted square grid pattern upon cooling from the chiral nematic (N*) phase in the planar texture. The dots are spaced by a distance of about 1.5-1.8 µm. Upon cooling from the N* phase in the focal conic texture a striped pattern is observed with the same spacing. X-ray diffraction revealed a repeat distance for the TGBC* phase that corresponds with a monolayer ordering. The results show that the weaker interaction between the dihydrocholesteryl groups compared with cholesteryl groups or longer spacers destabilize the monolayer TGBC* phase.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline systems studied consisted of non-chiral mesomorphic esters [the eutectic mixture of 4-n-hexyloxyphenyl 4-n-octyloxybenzoate and 4-n-octyloxyphenyl 4-n-hexyloxybenzoate] and structurally similar chiral dopants (N-arylidene derivatives of S-1-phenyl- and S- 1-benzyl-ethylamine). Twist grain boundary phases occur between the cholesteric and smectic C* or smectic A phases in all the investigated systems. The different structures of these TGB phases (TGBA and TGBC) are proved by small angle X-ray scattering and textural studies. The concentration and temperature ranges of the TGB phases are defined by the twisting power of the chiral dopants and their own mesomorphic peculiarities. The experimental dependences of TGB phase temperature range on cholesteric helical twist are influenced by a ratio change of the optically active and racemic forms of the dopant at a constant total concentration. The results obtained are discussed within Renn's theory.  相似文献

A series of cyclosiloxane-based cholesteric liquid crystalline (LC) polymers were synthesized from a cholesteric LC monomer cholest-5-en-3-yl(3β) 4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoate and a nematic LC monomer butyl 4-[4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoxy]benzoate. All the polymers exhibit thermotropic LC properties and show cholesteric phases. Most of the polymers display four types of phase transition behaviour corresponding to glass transition, melting point, cholesteric phase-blue phase transition and clearing point. The mesophase temperature range of the blue phases are as broad as 20°C. The blue phase was confirmed by the apperance of planar textures and cubic packings. With an increase of non-chiral component in the polymers, the clearing point decreases slightly, while the glass transition and melting temperatures change little. In the reflection spectra of the polymer series the reflected wavelength broadens and shifts to longer wavelength with increase of the non-chiral component in the polymer systems, suggesting that the helical pitch P lengthens.  相似文献

Optical rotation and circular dichroism measurements performed in the pretransitional isotropic region above the chiral smectic phases TGBA*, TGBC*, S*C, and S*A exhibited by 1-alkylalkyl 4'-(4'-n-alkoxyphenylpropioloyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylates are reported. These results revealed a high degree of increasing chiral ordering on cooling in the isotropic phase, particularly in the temperature region where a broad DSC peak appears. However, the behaviour of the pretransitional optical activity was unlike that commonly observed for chiral nematic or blue phase compounds and did not follow a simple Landau-de Gennes temperature dependence. Characteristic features of the pretransitional optical activity may aid in understanding the local structure of chiral smectic phases. Electric fields did not seem to influence the results significantly, but strong electric field-induced optical rotation behaviour was demonstrated for a mixture constituted of the laterally fluorinated propiolate ester component and a nematic with a large positive dielectric anisotropy. These field-induced results could be fitted to expressions from the existing theory of pretransitional optical activity. Circular dichroism studies at low temperatures were performed for two compounds in dilute solution and were found to exhibit very large changes in their extinction coefficient at wavelengths in the ultraviolet region, which may indicate strong chiral interactions even in dilute isotropic solutions of these materials.  相似文献

High pressure studies for the n = 12 homologues of the 3-fluoro-4((R) or (S)-methylheptyloxy)-4'-(4-alkyloxy-3-fluorobenzoyloxy) tolanes series have been performed by thermobarometric analysis. The phase sequence presents two Twist Grain Boundary phases denoted TGBA and TGBC. The pressure-temperature phase diagram has been determined; it exhibits a SC* phase, and an induced phase identified as SA which does not exist under atmospheric pressure. The TGBA temperature stability domain versus pressure first increases, then rises to a maximum and finally disappears. Such phase behaviour leads to an experimental observation of two multicritical points SC*-SA-TGBA and SA-TGBA-N* for the pure compound under high pressures. This result confirms the existence of singular points previously predicted by the Renn-Lubensky theory.  相似文献

A new series with a chiral tolane core has been synthesized. These materials belong to the optically active series: 3-fluoro-4-[(R) or (S)-1-methylheptyloxy]4'-(4'-alkyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoyloxy)tolanes (nFBTFO1M7). For the first time, the helical SA* phase or TGBA phase is found in all of the derivatives from heptyloxy to octadecyloxy. The SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is observed in several compounds with short chains and the SC*-SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is obtained with the decyloxy derivative. The TGBA phase has filament or cholesteric textures. The helical pitch of the TGBA phase is short for the octadecyloxy derivative and is compared with that for different chain lengths as a function of temperature. The layer spacing in the TGBA phase shows that it is incommensurate with the fully elongated molecular length.  相似文献

Two new chiral series with a tolane core: (S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IB) and (S) 4-(1-ethylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IC) 4-alkanoyloxytolane-4'-carboxylates have been synthesized and characterized. All the compounds are mesomorphic, and most of them display the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase. The mesomorphic properties have been analysed by optical microscopy, DSC, helical pitch and electro-optical measurements and X-ray diffraction study. Series IB exhibits a very rich polymesomorphism with SmC*alpha, SmC*, SmC* F12, SmC* F11 and SmC*A phases, like the previously reported series IA, [(S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-alkyloxytolane-4-carboxylates]. Series IC is more interesting because it presents for the first time in antiferroelectric series the liquid-like phase (L phase) between the SmC*A and isotropic phases. Preliminary optical studies plead in favour of a helical short range structure for this new liquid-like L phase.  相似文献
