All groups of free homeomorphisms of the real line are determined up to topological conjugacy. Surprisingly, many of them are lacunary in the sense that no orbit is dense, although the groups themselves (with the exception of the infinite cyclic group) are dense subgroups of R+. Such pathological behaviour is, however, impossible for normal subgroups of transitive groups.  相似文献

We continue in this paper the study of locally minimal groups started in Außenhofer et al. (2010) [4]. The minimality criterion for dense subgroups of compact groups is extended to local minimality. Using this criterion we characterize the compact abelian groups containing dense countable locally minimal subgroups, as well as those containing dense locally minimal subgroups of countable free-rank. We also characterize the compact abelian groups whose torsion part is dense and locally minimal. We call a topological group G almost minimal if it has a closed, minimal normal subgroup N such that the quotient group G/N is uniformly free from small subgroups. The class of almost minimal groups includes all locally compact groups, and is contained in the class of locally minimal groups. On the other hand, we provide examples of countable precompact metrizable locally minimal groups which are not almost minimal. Some other significant properties of this new class are obtained.  相似文献

We will derive a new discreteness condition for n-dimensional M?bius subgroups as well as obtain some results concerning classification of such groups. We will also discuss dense subgroups of n-dimensional M?bius groups. Of interest are the subgroups of various groups which have nonempty intersection with each class of conjugate elements of the group under study. We call these subgroups conjugately dense and study Neumann's problem of describing them in the Chevalley groups over a field. The main theorem lists all conjugately dense subgroups of the Chevalley groups of Lie rank 1 over a locally finite field.  相似文献

A subgroup having non-empty intersection with each class of conjugate elements of the group is said to be conjugately dense. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the number of conjugately dense subgroups in a free product with amalgamation is not less than some cardinal. As a consequence, P. Neumann’s conjecture in the Kourovka notebook (Question 6.38) is refuted. It is also stated that a modular group and a non-Abelian group of countable or finite rank possess continuum many pairwise non-conjugate conjugately dense subgroups. We are engaged in classifying up to isomorphism of discrete subgroups of an affine transformation group on a plane (a two-dimensional space) preserving the Minkowski metric. It is proved that, for subgroups that do not coincide with Euclidean ones, the orbit of almost every point is everywhere dense.  相似文献

We show that (with one possible exception) there exist strongly dense free subgroups in any semisimple algebraic group over a large enough field. These are nonabelian free subgroups all of whose subgroups are either cyclic or Zariski dense. As a consequence, we get new generating results for finite simple groups of Lie type and a strengthening of a theorem of Borel related to the Hausdorff-Banach-Tarski paradox. In a sequel to this paper, we use this result to also establish uniform expansion properties for random Cayley graphs over finite simple groups of Lie type  相似文献

A group is called metahamiltonian if all its non-abelian subgroups are normal; it is known that locally soluble metahamiltonian groups have finite derived subgroup. This result is generalized here, by proving that every locally graded group with finitely many derived subgroups of non-normal subgroups has finite derived subgroup. We study the compact-open topology on the character group of dense subgroups of topological abelian groups. Permanence properties concerning open subgroups, quotients and products are considered. We also present some representative examples. We prove that every compact abelian group G with w(G)?c has a dense pseudocompact group which does not determine G; this provides (under CH) a negative answer to a question posed by S. Hernández, S. In this paper, we investigate the properties of normal fuzzy subgroups of a fuzzy group. We also introduce the notion of a characteristic fuzzy subgroup of a fuzzy group, of which we provide level subset and strong level subset characterizations. Then we prove that a characteristic fuzzy subgroup of a fuzzy group is a normal fuzzy subgroup. Besides we prove that the commutator subgroup generated by the commutator of two normal fuzzy subgroups of a fuzzy group is contained in their intersection. Finally, we construct many new lattices and sublattices of fuzzy subgroups and normal fuzzy subgroups of a given fuzzy group. We also construct lattices of characteristic fuzzy subgroups possessing sup-property.  相似文献

We obtain a complete classification of the continuous unitary representations of oligomorphic permutation groups (those include the infinite permutation group S ??, the automorphism group of the countable dense linear order, the homeomorphism group of the Cantor space, etc.). Our main result is that all irreducible representations of such groups are obtained by induction from representations of finite quotients of open subgroups and, moreover, every representation is a sum of irreducibles. As an application, we prove that many oligomorphic groups have property (T). We also show that the Gelfand?CRaikov theorem holds for topological subgroups of S ??: for all such groups, continuous irreducible representations separate points in the group.  相似文献

We compare Aut(Q), the classical automorphism group of a countable dense linear order, with Aut c (Q), the group of all computable automorphisms of such an order. They have a number of similarities, including the facts that every element of each group is a commutator and each group has exactly three nontrivial normal subgroups. However, the standard proofs of these facts in Aut(Q) do not work for Aut c (Q). Also, Aut(Q) has three fundamental properties which fail in Aut c (Q): it is divisible, every element is a commutator of itself with some other element, and two elements are conjugate if and only if they have isomorphic orbital structures.  相似文献

有限群G的一个子群称为在G中是π-拟正规的若它与G的每一个Sylow-子群是交换的.G的一个子群H称为在G中是c-可补的若存在G的子群N使得G=HN且H∩N≤HG=CoreG(H).本文证明了:设F是一个包含超可解群系u的饱和群系,G有一个正规子群H使得G/H∈F.则G∈F若下列之一成立:(1)H的每个Sylow子群的所有极大子群在G中或者是π-拟正规的或者是c-可补的;(2)F*(H)的每个Sylow子群的所有极大子群在G中或者是π-拟正规的或者是c-可补的,其中F*(H)是H的广义Fitting子群.此结论统一了一些最近的结果.  相似文献
