We investigate the electronic transport properties of the single-impurity Anderson model. By employing the cluster expansions, the equations of motion of Green's functions are transformed into the corresponding equation of motion of connected Green's functions, which contains the correlation of two conduction electrons beyond the Lacroix approximation. With the method we show that the asymmetric line shape of zero bias conductance manifests itself as the Fano effect, and the Kondo effect is observed in the narrow peak of differential conductance curve of the system. The Fano and the Kondo effects can coexist in the single-impurity Anderson model when the impurity level is adjusted to an appropriate position.

We propose a new method of analyzing the quantum interference effect of the resonant transport in ballistic open systems. The new method is to obtain the resonant eigenvalues by computing the norm of the retarded and advanced Green's functions. Using the method, we illustrate for a fullerene and an AB-ring the relation between each resonant state and each asymmetric conductance peak, namely the Fano peak. We show that the combination of resonant states determines the symmetry of a conductance peak and that the Fano peak is caused by the asymmetry of the numerator of the conductance around a resonance. The Fano peak appears not only due to the quantum interference effect as often claimed, but more generally due to the resonant transport.

Using the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green's function technique, the Fano effect of a parallel-coupled triple Rashba quantum dot system is investigated. The conductance as a function of electron energy is numerically calculated. Compared with the case of a parallel-coupled double quantum dot system, two additional Fano resonance peaks occur in the conductance spectrum. By adjusting the structural parameters, the two Fano resonance peaks may change into the resonance peaks. In addition, the influence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the conductance is studied.

The commensurate photon-irradiated mesoscopic transport in a strongly correlated quantum dot (QD) embedded Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer has been investigated. We focus our investigation on the dynamic Kondo and Fano cooperated effect affected by the double commensurate MWFs with q=ω2/ω1 being an arbitrary integer, where ω1 and ω2 are the two frequencies of the fields. The general tunneling current formula is derived by employing the nonequilibrium Green's function technique, and the different photon absorption and emission processes induced nonlinear properties have been studied to compare with the single-field system where q=0. Our numerical calculations are performed for the special cases with two commensurate fields possessing q=1,2. The Kondo peak can be suppressed to be a Kondo valley for the case where the commensurate number q=1, and the Fano asymmetric structure exhibits in the differential conductance quite evidently. Different commensurate number q contributes different photon absorption and emission effects. However, the conductance for the case of q=2 possesses more peaks and heavier asymmetric structure than the situations of q=0,1. The enhancement of satellite peaks behaves quite differently for the two cases with q=1, and q=2. The asymmetric peak-valley structure is adjusted by the gate voltage, commensurate MWFs, AB flux, source-drain bias, and non-resonant tunneling strength to form novel Fano and Kondo resonant tunneling.

Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function and equation-of-motion technique, this paper investigates the spin-polarized transport properties of the T-shaped double quantum dots (DQD) coupled to two ferromagnetic leads. There are both Fano effect and Kondo effect in the system, and due to their mutual interaction, the density of states, the current, and the differential conductance of the system depend sensitively on the spin-polarized strength. Thus the obtained results show that this system is provided with excellent spin filtering property, which indicates that this system may be a candidate for spin valve transistors in the spintronics.

Conductance through a system consisting of a wire with side-attached quantum dots is calculated. Such geometry of the device allows to study the coexistence of quantum interference, electron correlations and their influence on conductance. We underline the differences between ‘classical’ Fano resonance in which the resonant channel is of single-particle nature and ‘many-body’ Fano resonance with the resonant channel formed by Kondo effect. The influence of electron-electron interactions on the Fano resonance shape is also analyzed.

The Kondo effect and the Andreev reflection tunneling through a normal (ferromagnet)-double quantum dots-superconductor hybrid system is examined in the low temperature by using the nonequilibrium Green's function technique in combination with the slave-boson mean-field theory. The interplay of the Kondo physics and the Andreev bound state physics can be controlled by varying the interdot hopping strength. The Andreev differential conductance is mainly determined by the competition between Kondo states and Andreev states. The spin-polarization of the ferromagnetic electrode increases the zero-bias Kondo peak. The spin-flip scattering influences the Kondo effect and the Andreev reflection in a nontrivial way. For the ferromagnetic electrode with sufficiently large spin polarization, the negative Andreev differential conductance is found when the spin flip strength in the double quantum dots is sufficiently strong.

The conductance across a quantum dot can be influenced by levels localized in the dot and having little hybridization with the conduction channel. Fano lineshapes arising in resonant transmission measurements, imply interference between the localized and extended states. By applying a magnetic orthogonal field, the total spin of a quantum dot can be tuned. Electron correlations drive the dot through level crossings to higher spin states. Such crossings can give rise to Kondo conductance when the dot is at Coulomb blockade close to a magnetic field induced level degeneracy. In a previous work [P. Stefański, A. Tagliacozzo, B.R. Bulka, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 186805] we have shown that a Fano-like pattern also appears when the continuum of the conduction states originates from a broad Kondo resonance. A bunch of localized core levels, weakly coupled to the Kondo resonance, imprints the broad Kondo peak with Fano lineshapes. A signature of the presence of correlations in the quantum dot is discussed.

Conductance and other physical quantities are calculated in double quantum dots (DQD) connected in series in the limit of coherent tunnelling using a Green's function technique. The inter-dot Coulomb repulsion and the exchange interaction are studied by means of the Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave-boson mean-field approach. The crossover from the atomic to the molecular limit is analyzed in order to show how the conductance in the model depends on the competition between the level broadening (dot-lead coupling) and the dot-dot transmission. The double Kondo effect was found in the gate voltage characteristics of the conductance in the atomic limit. In the case, when each dot accommodates one electron, the Kondo resonant states are formed between dots and their adjacent leads and transport is dominated by hopping between these two resonances. In the molecular limit the conductance vanishes for sufficiently low gate voltages, which means the Kondo effect disappeared. For small dot-lead coupling the transport characteristics are very sensitive on the influence of the inter-dot Coulomb repulsion and the position of the local energy level. The resonance region is widened with increase of the inter-dot Coulomb interactions while the exchange interaction has opposite influence.

We study a Co-benzene sandwich molecule bridging the tips of a Cu nanocontact as a realistic model of correlated molecular transport. To this end we employ a recently developed method for calculating the correlated electronic structure and transport properties of nanoscopic conductors. When the molecule is slightly compressed by the tips of the nanocontact the dynamic correlations originating from the strongly interacting Co 3d shell give rise to an orbital Kondo effect while the usual spin Kondo effect is suppressed due to Hund's rule coupling. This nontrivial Kondo effect produces a sharp and temperature-dependent Abrikosov-Suhl resonance in the spectral function at the Fermi level and a corresponding Fano line shape in the low bias conductance.

We have observed the Fano-Kondo antiresonance in a quantum wire with a side-coupled quantum dot. In a weak coupling regime, dips due to the Fano effect appeared. As the coupling strength increased, conductance in the regions between the dips decreased alternately. From the temperature dependence and the response to the magnetic field, we conclude that the conductance reduction is due to the Fano-Kondo antiresonance. At a Kondo valley with the Fano parameter q approximately 0, the phase shift is locked to pi/2 against the gate voltage when the system is close to the unitary limit in agreement with theoretical predictions by Gerland et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3710 (2000)].

This paper investigates Kondo transport properties in a quadruple quantum dot (QD) based on the slave-boson mean field theory and the non-equilibrium Green’s function. In the quadruple QD structure one Kondo-type QD sandwiched between two leads is side coupled to two separate QD structures:a single-QD atom and a double-QD molecule. It shows that the conductance valleys and peaks always appear in pairs and by tuning the energy levels in three side QDs,the one-,two-,or three-valley conductance pattern can be obtained.Furthermore,it finds that whether the valley and the peak can appear is closely dependent on the specific values of the interdot couplings and the energy level difference between the two QDs in the molecule.More interestingly,an extra novel conductance peak can be produced by the coexistence of the two different kinds of side QD structures.

Many-body effects on the STM imaged charge density oscillations around a magnetic adatom on a nonmagnetic metal surface are investigated with the aid of the Newns-Anderson model. It is shown that the many-body effects due to Coulomb interactions between electrons on a localized orbital of the adatom can be observed in the strong temperature dependence of the charge density image on and around the adatom. In addition, it is suggested that the Kondo resonance can be observed in this system as protrusions in the spatially resolved spectroscopic STM images and that the Fano resonance can be also observed as an asymmetry of the differential conductance versus energy (bias) curve about the Fermi level.

We adopt the nonequilibrium Green's function method to theoretically study the Kondo effect in a deformed molecule, which is treated as an electron-phonon interaction (EPI) system. The self-energy for phonon part is calculated in the standard many-body diagrammatic expansion up to the second order in EPI strength. We find that the multiple phonon-assisted Kondo satellites arise besides the usual Kondo resonance. In the antiparallel magnetic configuration the splitting of main Kondo peak and phonon-assisted satellites only happen for asymmetrical dot-lead couplings, but it is free from the symmetry for the parallel magnetic configuration. The EPI strength and vibrational frequency can enhance the spin splitting of both main Kondo and satellites. It is shown that the suppressed zero-bias Kondo resonance can be restored by applying an external magnetic field, whose magnitude is dependent on the phononic effect remarkably. Although the asymmetry in tunnel coupling has no contribution to the restoration of spin splitting of Kondo peak, it can shrink the external field needed to switch tunneling magnetoresistance ratio between large negative dip and large positive peak.

We have studied the thermoelectric properties through ferromagnetic leads-QD coupled system (F-QD-F) in the Kondo regime by nonequilibrium Green's functions method. The spin-flip effect induced by ferromagnetic leads and Kondo effect influence the thermoelectric properties significantly. The peak-valley structure emerges at the low temperature due to Kondo resonance, and the peak-valley structure also relies on the polarization angle θ, the spin-dependent linewidth function Γγσ and the energy level of QD εd. Novel resonant peak also emerges in the curve of ZTc versus polarization angle θ. The Kondo effect suppresses the figure of merit ZTc and the spin-dependent figure of merit ZTs. In addition, the spin-dependent figure of merit ZTs is relate with the gap between Γγ↑ and Γγ↓.

The shot noise of a parallel double quantum dot (DQD) system under the perturbation of microwave fields is investigated in the weak Kondo regime. Peak-valley structures exhibit in the differential conductance and shot noise, and side resonant peaks emerge around the Kondo peak due to the absorption and emission of photons. The shot noise is sensitively dependent on the adjusting approach through changing the gate voltages. Large resonant Fano factor accompanying photon-induced side peaks appear by simultaneously varying the two gate voltages. The photon suppression and enhancement of shot noise have been evaluated corresponding to the coherent and incoherent current correlation. The destructive interference causes the suppression of shot noise by changing the Aharonov–Bohm phase.
