In this paper we briefly review the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model and its application to the study of azimuthal asymmetries in the distribution of leading hadrons (mainly pions) inside large transverse momentum jets inclusively produced in polarized proton-proton collisions. We put particular emphasis on the phenomenological interest of these observables, in combination with similar asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan processes and e + e ? collisions, for the study of the universality properties of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. We present results for RHIC kinematics at center-of-mass energies √s = 200 and 500 GeV, for central and mainly forward jet rapidities, in particular for the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation function, that are believed to be responsible for many of the largest asymmetries measured in the last years. We also briefly discuss the case of inclusive jet production and recent phenomenological applications of other theoretical approaches, like the colour gauge invariant generalized parton model and the collinear twist-three approach, aiming at clarifying the issues of the universality and process dependence of transverse momentum dependent functions.  相似文献

We report measurements of the asymmetry A6 for inclusive hadron production on longitudinally polarized proton and deuteron targets by circularly polarized photons. The photons were produced via internal and external bremsstrahlung from an electron beam of 48.35 GeV. Asymmetries for both positive and negative signed hadrons, and a subset of identified pions, were measured in the momentum range 10<P<30 GeV at 2.75° and 5.5°. Small non-zero asymmetries are observed for the proton, while the deuteron results are consistent with zero. Recent calculations do not describe the data well.  相似文献

We study photoproduction of jets and heavy flavors in a polarized collider mode of HERA and in polarized ep collisions at √S ≈ GeV. We examine the sensitivity of the cross sections and their asymmetries to the proton’s polarized gluon distribution and to the completely unknown parton distributions of longitudinally polarized photons.  相似文献

I study hard collisions between unpolarized protons and antiprotons where a lepton-antilepton pair is detected in coincidence with a final proton-antiproton pair, and no more particles are produced, in the regime 10 GeV2 ≪ s ≪ 1000 GeV2 , M > 4 GeV, q T < 3 GeV/c. The present work is centered on azimuthal asymmetries. Because of momentum conservation, a Boer-Mulders term in the momentum distribution of a quark implies a balancing effect in the momentum distribution of some spectators. This produces azimuthal asymmetries of the final hadrons. To analyze this, I have organized a parton-level Monte Carlo generator where a standard cos(2f \phi) -asymmetry of the dilepton distribution is produced, thanks to a soft rescattering process between an active quark coming from a hadron and a spectator antidiquark coming from the other hadron. This produces cos(2f \phi) -asymmetries of the final hadron pair. Hadron and lepton asymmetries have the same size.  相似文献

We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep-inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Jefferson Lab (JLab). Modulations of single spin asymmetries over the azimuthal angle between lepton scattering and hadron production planes ? have been measured over a wide kinematic range in Bjorken x and virtual photon squared four-momentum Q2. A significant nonzero sin2? single spin asymmetry was observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton.  相似文献

The single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in pp→(γ*, Z)+X processes induced by collisions of polarized protons are investigated on the basis of QCD and electroweak interaction by using the method of helicity amplitudes. Analytic expressions for the single-spin (A L) and double-spin (A LL) asymmetries are obtained, and their dependence on the dilepton transverse momentum is investigated at three values of the dilepton invariant mass. The results obtained in this study make it possible to explore the spin structure of the proton.  相似文献

Using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electronproton collider, we have searched for lepton flavor violation in ep collisions at a center—of—mass energy ($sqrt S$) of 300 GeV. Events of the type e + p → ? + X with a final—state lepton of high transverse momentum, ? = μ or τ, were sought. No evidence was found for lepton flavor violation in the combined 1993 and 1994 data samples, for which the integrated luminosities were 0.84 pb{?1}for e{~p collisions and 2.94 pb{?1} for e+p collisions. Limits on coupling vs. mass are provided for leptoquarks and R—parity violating squarks. For flavor violating couplings of electromagnetic strength, we set 95% confidence level lower limits on leptoquark masses between 207 GeV and 272 GeV, depending on the leptoquark species and final—state lepton. For leptoquark masses larger than 300 GeV, limits on flavor—changing couplings are determined, many of which supersede prior limits from rare decay processes.  相似文献

A study of secondary Drell-Yan production in nuclear collisions is presented for SPS energies. In addition to the lepton pairs produced in the initial collisions of the projectile and target nucleons, we consider the potentially high dilepton yield from hard valence antiquarks in produced mesons and antibaryons. We calculate the secondary Drell-Yan contributions taking the collision spectrum of hadrons from the microscopic model URQMD. The contributions from meson-baryon interactions, small in hadron-nucleus interactions, are found to be substantial in nucleus-nucleus collisions at low dilepton masses. We study Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c using hydrodynamical approach. We test different equations of state (EoSs) and different initial conditions and show that there are more than one initial state for each EoS which reproduce the observed hadronic spectra. We also find that different equations of state favor different freeze-out temperature. Simultaneously we calculate the thermal dilepton and photon spectra for each EoS and initial state. We compare the dilepton mass spectrum to data measured by the CERES collaboration and find that the differences in spectra obtained using different EoSs and initial states are not resolvable within the current experimental resolution. However, at invariant masses over 2 GeV the difference in the yield due to various initial states is close to an order of magnitude. We also study the rapidity distribution of lepton pairs and find that for masses around 800 MeV the shape of the distribution depends strongly on the EoS.  相似文献

Effects of polarization of hadrons and constituent quarks in Drell-Yan processes are considered; they are one of the most efficient tools for investigation of the quark structure of hadrons. Special attention is paid to such important parton distribution functions as the transversity and T-odd Sivers and Boer—Mulders functions whose study is necessary for understanding the effects connected with the nonzero transverse component of the quark momentum. An original method for direct extraction of transversity and Boer—Mulders function in the proton from the data on Drell—Yan processes, in which a maximum of one hadron in the initial state is transversely polarized, is presented. This method possesses a number of important advantages. The method is applied both to Drell—Yan processes with a valence antiquark (antiproton-proton and pion-proton collisions) and with a sea antiquark (proton-proton, proton-deuteron, and deuteron-deuteron collisions). Theoretical estimates of asymmetries and cross sections for setups at RHIC (BNL, US), NICA (JINR, Russia), COMPASS (CERN, Switzerland), PAX (GSI, Germany), and J-PARC (Japan) are presented for evaluation of the measurability of transversity and T-odd distributions. These theoretical estimates are accompanied by calculations of statistical uncertainties for measured asymmetries using the new Monte Carlo generator of Drell—Yan events. The duality of Drell—Yan processes and those of production of J/Φ resonance is studied, and it may allow one to considerably reduce statistical uncertainties of parton distributions. Kinematical conditions, for which this duality can be observed, are evaluated.  相似文献

A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg, and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin structure through pp and pd processes with a fixed-target experiment using the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7?TeV proton beams at the energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons $\sqrt{s}=115~\mathrm{GeV}$ . We calculate and estimate the cos2? azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized pp and pd dilepton production processes in the Drell?CYan continuum region and at the Z-pole. We also calculate the sin(2??? S ), sin(2?+? S ) and sin2? azimuthal asymmetries of pp and pd dilepton production processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally polarized in the Drell?CYan continuum region and around Z resonances region. We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries, consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.  相似文献

We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A(||) in photoproduction of pairs of hadrons with high transverse momentum p(T). Data were accumulated by the HERMES experiment using a 27.5 GeV polarized positron beam and a polarized hydrogen target internal to the HERA storage ring. For h(+)h(-) pairs with p(h(1))(T)>1.5 GeV/c and p(h(2))(T)>1.0 GeV/c, the measured asymmetry is A(||) = -0. 28+/-0.12(stat)+/-0.02(syst). This negative value is in contrast to the positive asymmetries typically measured in deep inelastic scattering from protons, and is interpreted to arise from a positive gluon polarization.  相似文献

Low-order electromagnetic corrections to deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons by polarized nucleons are derived and investigated using a covariant method. Thorough numerical calculations of the corrections to cross sections and to the measured asymmetry are carried out for μp (ep) scattering in the range of lepton energy E = 200–500 GeV (10–16 GeV). The sensitivity of the corrections to the choice of the structure functions is investigated. The electromagnetic corrections to the asymmetry are found to be less than 10% within the greatest part of the kinematical region, but if x ~ 0, y ~ 1 they can reach a few tens of percent. The lowest order neutral current contribution to the asymmetry is obtained within the framework of standard electroweak interaction theory and the quark parton model. It is found this effect may be significant, especially in the kinematical range where electromagnetic corrections are negligible.  相似文献

The study of transverse spin and transverse momentum effects is an important part of the scientific program of COMPASS, a fixed target experiment at the CERN SPS taking data since 2002. The studies are carried on by measuring the hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of 160 GeV/c muons off different targets. Among the possible asymmetries in the hadron azimuthal distributions, particularly interesting are the Collins and Sivers asymmetries which the COMPASS Collaboration has measured using transversely polarised deuteron and proton targets. Here new results for charged pions and kaons obtained from the 2010 run with a transversely polarised proton target are presented for the first time.  相似文献

The Lead Radius Experiment PREX will run in Spring of 2010. The experiment measures the parity-violating asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from a lead nucleus at an energy of 1.05 GeV and a scattering angle of 5°. The Z 0 boson couples mainly to neutrons, and provides a clean measurement of R n with a projected experimental precision of ±1%. The measurement is a fundamental test of nuclear theory and pins down the density-dependence of the symmetry energy of neutron rich nuclear matter which has impacts on neutron star structure, heavy ion collisions, and atomic parity violation experiments. Transverse single spin asymmetries A N are expected to be sensitive to par-ton polarization and orbital angular momentum contributions to the nucleon spin. Significantly large A N has been observed in different collision systems such as semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and polarized proton-proton (pp) collisions, indicating a dominant contribution of partonic interactions in the non-perturbative regime. Therefore it’s critical to measure A N in various channels of polarized pp collisions in order to complement SIDIS data and to constrain theoretical models. We report STAR asymmetry measurements on mid-rapidity hadron-jet and di-hadron correlations at √s = 200 GeV and forward rapidity inclusive hadron production at √s = 500 GeV polarized pp collisions.  相似文献

We investigate the role of the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon's polarized antiquark distributions in Drell–Yan lepton pair production in polarized nucleon–nucleon collisions at HERA (fixed–target) and RHIC energies. It is shown that the large polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry predicted by model calculations in the large– limit (chiral quark–soliton model) has a dramatic effect on the double spin asymmetries in high mass lepton pair production, as well as on the single spin asymmetries in lepton pair production through –bosons at . We study dilepton production in proton–proton, Cu+Cu as well as in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy \(\sqrt{s} =200\) GeV per participating nucleon pair within an extended statistical hadronization model. In extension to earlier studies we incorporate transport calculations for an estimate of uncorrelated e + e ? -pairs from semileptonic D meson decays. While the invariant mass spectrum of dielectrons is well understood in the p+p collisions, severe discrepancies among different model scenarios based on hadronic degrees of freedom and recent data from the PHENIX Collaboration are found in heavy-ion collisions in the low-mass region from 0.15 to 0.6 GeV as well as in the intermediate mass regime from 1.1 to 3 GeV when employing the standard dilepton sources. We investigate, furthermore, the background from correlated dileptons that are not emitted as a pair from a parent hadron but emerge from semileptonic decays of two correlated daughter hadrons. Our calculations suggest a sizeable contribution of such sources in central heavy-ion collisions in the low-mass region. However, even the upper limits of our calculations are found to be far below the dilepton mass spectra of the PHENIX Collaboration.  相似文献
