In this paper, the analytical bending solutions of clamped rectangular thin plates resting on elastic foundations are obtained by a rational symplectic superposition method which is based on the Hamiltonian system. The proposed method is capable of solving the plate problems with different boundary conditions via a step-by-step derivation without any trial solutions. The presented solution procedure can be extended to more boundary value problems in engineering.

This paper deals with the classical challenging free vibration problems of non-Lévy-type cylindrical shell panels, i.e., those without two opposite edges simply supported, by a Hamiltonian system-based symplectic superposition method. The governing equations of a vibrating cylindrical panel are formulated within the Hamiltonian system framework such that the symplectic eigen problems are constructed, which yield analytic solutions of two types of fundamental problems. By the equivalence between the superposition of the fundamental problems and the original problem, new analytic frequency and mode shape solutions of the panels with four different combinations of boundary conditions are derived. Comprehensive benchmark results are tabulated and plotted, which are useful for validation of other numerical/approximate methods. The primary advantage of the developed approach that no pre-determination of solution forms is needed enables one to pursue more analytic solutions of intractable shell problems.

It is of significance to explore benchmark analytic free vibration solutions of rectangular thick plates without two parallel simply supported edges, because the classic analytic methods are usually invalid for the problems of this category. The main challenge is to find the solutions meeting both the governing higher order partial differential equations (PDEs) and boundary conditions of the plates, i.e., to analytically solve associated complex boundary value problems of PDEs. In this letter, we extend a novel symplectic superposition method to the free vibration problems of clamped rectangular thick plates, with the analytic frequency solutions obtained by a brief set of equations. It is found that the analytic solutions of clamped plates can simply reduce to their variants with any combinations of clamped and simply supported edges via an easy relaxation of boundary conditions. The new results yielded in this letter are not only useful for rapid design of thick plate structures but also provide reliable benchmarks for checking the validity of other new solution methods.

This paper presents a very first combined application of Ritz method and differential quadrature (DQ) method to vibration problem of rectangular plates. In this study, the spatial partial derivatives with respect to a coordinate direction are first discretized using the Ritz method. The resulting system of partial differential equations and the related boundary conditions are then discretized in strong form using the DQ method. The mixed method combines the simplicity of the Ritz method and high accuracy and efficiency of the DQ method. The results are obtained for various types of boundary conditions. Comparisons are made with existing analytical and numerical solutions in the literature. Numerical results prove that the present method is very suitable for the problem considered due to its simplicity, efficiency, and high accuracy.

A two-dimensional linearized problem on plane buckling modes (BMs) of a rectangular plate with free edges, made of an elastic orthotropic material, underbiaxial tension-compression is considered. With the use of double trigonometric basis functions, displacement functions exactly satisfying all static boundary condition on plate edges are constructed. It is shown that the exact analytic solutions found describe only the pure shear BMs, and if the normal stress in one direction is assumed equal to zero, an analog of the solution given by the kinematic Timoshenko model can be obtained. Upon performing the limit passage to the zero harmonic in the displacement functions of one of the directions, the solution to the problem of biaxial compression can be obtained by equating the Poisson ratio to zero; in the case of uniaxial compression, this solution exactly agrees with that following from the classical Bernoulli-Euler model. __________ Translated from Mekhanika Kompozitnykh Materialov, Vol. 43, No. 2, pp. 149–170, March–April, 2007.

The hp-version of the finite element method based on a triangular p-element is applied to free vibration of the orthotropic triangular and rectangular plates. The element's hierarchical shape functions, expressed in terms of shifted Legendre orthogonal polynomials, is developed for orthotropic plate analysis by taking into account shear deformation, rotary inertia, and other kinematics effects. Numerical results of frequency calculations are found for the free vibration of the orthotropic triangular and rectangular plates with the effect of the fiber orientation and plate boundary conditions. The results are very well compared to those presented in the literature.

Exact bending solutions of fully clamped orthotropic rectangular thin plates subjected to arbitrary loads are derived using the finite integral transform method. In the proposed mathematical method one does not need to predetermine the deformation function because only the basic governing equations of the classical plate theory for orthotropic plates are used in the procedure. Therefore, unlike conventional semi-inverse methods, it serves as a completely rational and accurate model in plate bending analysis. The applicability of the method is extensive, and it can handle plates with different loadings in a uniform procedure, which is simpler than previous methods. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the approach as compared with those previously reported in the bibliography.

In this paper, exact closed-form solutions in explicit forms are presented for transverse vibration analysis of rectangular thick plates having two opposite edges hard simply supported (i.e., Lévy-type rectangular plates) based on the Reddy’s third-order shear deformation plate theory. Two other edges may be restrained by different combinations of free, soft simply supported, hard simply supported or clamped boundary conditions. Hamilton’s principle is used to derive the equations of motion and natural boundary conditions of the plate. Several comparison studies with analytical and numerical techniques reported in literature are carried out to demonstrate accuracy of the present new formulation. Comprehensive benchmark results for natural frequencies of rectangular plates with different combinations of boundary conditions are tabulated in dimensionless form for various values of aspect ratios and thickness to length ratios. A set of three-dimensional (3-D) vibration mode shapes along with their corresponding contour plots are plotted by using exact transverse displacements of Lévy-type rectangular Reddy plates. Due to the inherent features of the present exact closed-form solution, the present findings will be a useful benchmark for evaluating the accuracy of other analytical and numerical methods, which will be developed by researchers in the future.

The symplectic geometry approach is introduced for accurate bending analysis of rectangular thin plates with two adjacent edges free and the others clamped or simply supported. The basic equations for rectangular plates are first transferred into Hamilton canonical equations. Using the symplectic approach, the analytic solution of rectangular thin plate with two adjacent edges simply supported and the others slidingly supported is derived. Accurate bending solutions of title problems are then obtained using the superposition method. The approach used in this paper eliminates the need to pre-determine the deformation function and is hence more reasonable than conventional methods. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the approach as compared with those reported in other literatures.

In this paper, a simple and efficient mixed Ritz-differential quadrature (DQ) method is presented for free vibration and buckling analysis of orthotropic rectangular plates. The mixed scheme combines the simplicity of the Ritz method and high accuracy and efficiency of the DQ method. The accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing the calculated results with those available in the literature. It is shown that highly accurate results can be obtained using a small number of Ritz terms and DQ sample points. The proposed method is suitable for the problem considered due to its simplicity and potential for further development.

Recently, the present authors proposed a simple mixed Ritz-differential quadrature (DQ) methodology for free and forced vibration, and buckling analysis of rectangular plates. In this technique, the Ritz method is first used to discretize the spatial partial derivatives with respect to a coordinate direction of the plate. The DQ method is then employed to analogize the resulting system of ordinary or partial differential equations. The mixed method was shown to work well for vibration and buckling problems of rectangular plates with simple boundary conditions. But, due to the use of conventional Ritz method in one coordinate direction of the plate, the geometric boundary conditions of the problem can only be satisfied in that direction. Therefore, the conventional mixed Ritz-DQ methodology may encounter difficulties when dealing with rectangular plates involving adjacent free edges and skew plates. To overcome this difficulty, this paper presents a modified mixed Ritz-DQ formulation in which all the natural boundary conditions are exactly implemented. The versatility, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method for free vibration analysis of thick rectangular and skew plates are tested against other solution procedures. It is revealed that the proposed method can produce highly accurate solutions for the natural frequencies of thick rectangular plates involving adjacent free edges and skew plates using a small number Ritz terms and DQ sampling points.

The homotopy perturbation method (HPM) was developed to search for asymptotic solutions of nonlinear problems involving parabolic partial differential equations with variable coefficients. This paper illustrates that HPM be easily adapted to solve parabolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Natural frequencies of a rectangular plate of uniform thickness, simply-supported on all sides, are obtained with minimum amount of computation. The solution is shown to converge rapidly to a combination of sine and cosine functions. Truncating the series solution by using only the first three terms of the sine and cosine functions as compared to the exact solution results in an absolute error not exceeding 2 × 10−4 and 9×10−4 for the trigonometric functions respectively. HPM is then applied to solve the nonlinear problem of a rectangular plate of variable thickness. A direct expression for the eigenvalues (natural frequencies) of the rectangular plate is obtained as compared to determining its eigenvalues by solving the characteristic equation using the conventional method. Comparison of results for the frequency parameter with existing literature show that HPM is highly efficient and accurate. Natural frequencies of a simply-supported guitar soundboard were obtained using an equivalent rectangular plate with the same boundary condition.
