Given an augmented Lagrangian scheme for a general optimization problem, we use an epsilon subgradient step for improving the dual function. This can be seen as an update for an augmented penalty method, which is more stable because it does not force the penalty parameter to tend to infinity. We establish for this update primal-dual convergence for our augmented penalty method. As illustration, we apply our method to the test-bed kissing number problem.  相似文献

For the linear bilevel programming problem, we propose an assumption weaker than existing assumptions, while achieving similar results via a penalty function approach. The results include: equivalence between (i) existence of a solution to the problem, (ii) existence of an exact penalty function approach for solving the problem, and (iii) achievement of the optimal value of the equivalent form of the problem at some vertex of a certain polyhedral convex set. We prove that the assumption is both necessary and sufficient for the linear bilevel programming problem to admit an exact penalty function formulation, provided that the equivalent form of the problem has a feasible solution. A method is given for computing the minimal penalty function parameter value. This method can be executed by solving a set of linear programming problems. Lagrangian duality is also presented.  相似文献

We generalize stochastic mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (SMPEC) introduced by Patriksson and Wynter (Ref. 1) to allow for the inclusion of joint upper-level constraints and to change the continuity assumptions with respect to the uncertainty parameters assumed before by measurability assumptions. For this problem, we prove the existence of solutions. We discuss also algorithmic aspects of the problem, in particular the construction of an inexact penalty function for the SMPEC problem. We apply the theory to the problem of structural topology optimization.  相似文献

In the past decade, significant progress has been made in understanding problem complexity of discrete constraint problems. In contrast, little similar work has been done for constraint problems in the continuous domain. In this paper, we study the complexity of typical methods for non-linear constraint problems and present hybrid solvers with improved performance. To facilitate the empirical study, we propose a new test-case generator for generating non-linear constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) and constrained optimization problems (COPs). The optimization methods tested include a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method, a penalty method with a fixed penalty function, a penalty method with a sequence of penalty functions, and an augmented Lagrangian method. For hybrid solvers, we focus on the form that combines two or more optimization methods in sequence. In the experiments, we apply these methods to solve a series of continuous constraint problems with increasing constraint-to-variable ratios. The test problems include artificial benchmark problems from the test-case generator and problems derived from controlling a hyper-redundant modular manipulator. We obtain novel results on complexity phase transition phenomena of the various methods. Specifically, for constraint satisfaction problems, the SQP method is the best on weakly constrained problems, whereas the augmented Lagrangian method is the best on highly constrained ones. Although the static penalty method performs poorly by itself, by combining it with the SQP method, we show a hybrid solver that is significantly better than any of the individual methods on problems with moderate to large constraint-to-variable ratios. For constrained optimization problems, the hybrid solver obtains much better solutions than SQP, while spending comparable amount of time. In addition, the hybrid solver is flexible and can achieve good results on time-bounded applications by setting parameters according to the time limits.  相似文献

Summary For solving an equality constrained nonlinear least squares problem, a globalization scheme for the generalized Gauss-Newton method via damping is proposed. The stepsize strategy is based on a special exact penalty function. Under natural conditions the global convergence of the algorithm is proved. Moreover, if the algorithm converges to a solution having a sufficiently small residual, the algorithm is shown to change automatically into the undamped generalized Gauss-Newton method with a fast linear rate of convergence. The behaviour of the method is demonstrated on hand of some examples taken from the literature.  相似文献

We consider the finite element method for the time-dependent Stokes problem with the slip boundary condition in a smooth domain. To avoid a variational crime of numerical computation, a penalty method is introduced, which also facilitates the numerical implementation. For the continuous problem, the convergence of the penalty method is investigated. Then we study the fully discretized finite element approximations for the penalty method with the P1/P1-stabilization or P1b/P1 element. For the discretization of the penalty term, we propose reduced and non-reduced integration schemes, and obtain an error estimate for velocity and pressure. The theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments.  相似文献

We consider a compound Poisson risk model with interest. The Gerber–Shiu discounted penalty function is modified with an additional penalty for reaching a level above the initial capital. We show that the problem can be split into two independent problems; an original Gerber–Shiu function and a first passage problem. We also consider the case of negative interest. We use the penalty approach in order to study inequality-constrained minimization problems in infinite dimensional spaces. A penalty function is said to have the exact penalty property if there is a penalty coefficient for which a solution of an unconstrained penalized problem is a solution of the corresponding constrained problem. In this paper we consider a large class of inequality-constrained minimization problems for which a constraint is a mapping with values in a normed ordered space. For this class of problems we introduce a new type of penalty functions, establish the exact penalty property and obtain an estimation of the exact penalty. Using this exact penalty property we obtain necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the constrained minimization problems.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a general theory of exact parametric penalty functions for constrained optimization problems. The main advantage of the method of parametric penalty functions is the fact that a parametric penalty function can be both smooth and exact unlike the standard (i.e. non-parametric) exact penalty functions that are always nonsmooth. We obtain several necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the exactness of parametric penalty functions, and for the zero duality gap property to hold true for these functions. We also prove some convergence results for the method of parametric penalty functions, and derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a parametric penalty function to not have any stationary points outside the set of feasible points of the constrained optimization problem under consideration. In the second part of the paper, we apply the general theory of exact parametric penalty functions to a class of parametric penalty functions introduced by Huyer and Neumaier, and to smoothing approximations of nonsmooth exact penalty functions. The general approach adopted in this article allowed us to unify and significantly sharpen many existing results on parametric penalty functions.  相似文献

We consider the problem of assigning a common due-date and sequencing a set of simultaneously available jobs on several identical parallel-machines. The objective is to minimize some penalty function of earliness, tardiness and due-date values. We show that the problem is NP-hard with either a total or a maximal penalty function. For the problem with a total penalty function, we show that the special case in which all jobs have an equal processing time is polynomially-solvable.  相似文献

In this paper we propose two methods for smoothing a nonsmooth square-root exact penalty function for inequality constrained optimization. Error estimations are obtained among the optimal objective function values of the smoothed penalty problem, of the nonsmooth penalty problem and of the original optimization problem. We develop an algorithm for solving the optimization problem based on the smoothed penalty function and prove the convergence of the algorithm. The efficiency of the smoothed penalty function is illustrated with some numerical examples, which show that the algorithm seems efficient.  相似文献

Implementation of the penalty function method for constrained optimization poses numerical difficulties as the penalty parameter increases. To offset this problem, one often resorts to Newton's method. Stochastic programming is a well-known instrument to model many risk management problems in finance. In this paper we consider a stochastic programming model where the objective function is the variance of a random function and the constraint function is the expected value of the random function. Instead of using popular scenario tree methods, we apply the well-known sample average approximation (SAA) method to solve it. An advantage of SAA is that it can be implemented without knowing the distribution of the random data. We investigate the asymptotic properties of statistical estimators obtained from the SAA problem including examining the rate of convergence of optimal solutions of the SAA problem as sample size increases. By using the classical penalty function technique and recent results on uniform exponential convergence of sample average random functions, we show that under some mild conditions the statistical estimator of the optimal solution converges to its true counterpart at an exponential rate. We apply the proposed model and the numerical method to a portfolio management problem and present some numerical results.  相似文献

The penalty function method, presented many years ago, is an important numerical method for the mathematical programming problems. In this article, we propose a dual-relax penalty function approach, which is significantly different from penalty function approach existing for solving the bilevel programming, to solve the nonlinear bilevel programming with linear lower level problem. Our algorithm will redound to the error analysis for computing an approximate solution to the bilevel programming. The error estimate is obtained among the optimal objective function value of the dual-relax penalty problem and of the original bilevel programming problem. An example is illustrated to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.  相似文献

We consider a bilevel optimization problem where the upper level is a scalar optimization problem and the lower level is a vector optimization problem. For the lower level, we deal with weakly efficient solutions. We approach our problem using a suitable penalty function which vanishes over the weakly efficient solutions of the lower-level vector optimization problem and which is nonnegative over its feasible set. We reformulate a stochastic nonlinear complementarity problem as a stochastic programming problem which minimizes an expected residual defined by a restricted NCP function with nonnegative constraints and CVaR constraints which guarantee the stochastic nonlinear function being nonnegative with a high probability. By applying smoothing technique and penalty method, we propose a penalized smoothing sample average approximation algorithm to solve the CVaR-constrained stochastic programming. We show that the optimal solution of the penalized smoothing sample average approximation problem converges to the solution of the corresponding nonsmooth CVaR-constrained stochastic programming problem almost surely. Finally, we report some preliminary numerical test results.  相似文献

In the paper, we consider the exact minimax penalty function method used for solving a general nondifferentiable extremum problem with both inequality and equality constraints. We analyze the relationship between an optimal solution in the given constrained extremum problem and a minimizer in its associated penalized optimization problem with the exact minimax penalty function under the assumption of convexity of the functions constituting the considered optimization problem (with the exception of those equality constraint functions for which the associated Lagrange multipliers are negative—these functions should be assumed to be concave). The lower bound of the penalty parameter is given such that, for every value of the penalty parameter above the threshold, the equivalence holds between the set of optimal solutions in the given extremum problem and the set of minimizers in its associated penalized optimization problem with the exact minimax penalty function.  相似文献
