Formation of bound rubber is affected by the physical structure and surface chemistry of filler and the property of rubber. Variation of the bound rubber formation in styrene‐butadiene rubber compounds filled with silica and/or carbon black was studied. Influence of temperature on extraction of loosely bound rubber was also investigated. For the both silica and carbon black‐filled compounds, the bound rubber content increases with increase in the silica content ratio. The bound rubber content decreases with increasing the extracting temperature. The loosely bound rubber content of the silica‐filled compound is higher than that of the carbon black‐filled one. Activation energy for the extraction of the unbound and loosely bound rubbers becomes higher as the total filler content increases. The activation energy of the silica‐filled compound is higher (almost double the value) than for the carbon black‐filled one. Copyright© 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The performance of plasma surface modified silica filler in styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix has been analyzed. The conditions of plasma modification have been optimized by taking secant modulus as a standard parameter and the occurrence of the modification has been confirmed by surface area determination and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The plasma‐modified surface of silica has been found to be composed of carbon–carbon double bonds and carbon–hydrogen bonds. Silane treatment also has been carried out on silica filler surface for a comparative assessment of its influence in the curing behavior and filler–rubber interaction. The cure reactions of all the rubber compounds have been found to be proceeded according to first‐order kinetics. A reduction in the cure reaction rate constant has been observed with the loading of unmodified and surface modified silica, emphasizing the cure deactivation of the matrix rubber by the silica filler. The filler dispersion, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, has been found to be greatly improved by the plasma as well as silane treatment. The filler–rubber interaction has been found to be greatly improved by both surface treatments, but the best balance of mechanical properties has been observed with plasma surface modification only. Rubber compounds are filled with reinforcing fillers to improve their physical properties. Carbon black and silica have different surface chemistries to each other. Differences in properties of carbon black‐ and silica‐reinforced styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds were studied. Variation of properties of carbon black‐ or silica‐filled compounds with the filler content was also investigated. The silica‐filled compounds without any coupling agent and dispering agent were prepared to investigate the influence of polar materials‐adsorption on the silica surface. Viscosity and crosslink density increased with increase of the filler content. Hardness, modulus, tensile strength, and wear property were improved more and more by increasing the filler content. Viscosity of the silica‐filled compound was higher than that of the carbon black‐filled one. Cure rate of the silica‐filled compound became slower as the filler content increased, while that of the carbon black‐filled one became faster. Difference in properties between the carbon black‐ and silica‐filled compounds were explained by the poor silica dispersion and the adsorption of cure accelerator on the silica surface. Bound rubber in a filled rubber compound is formed by physical adsorption and chemisorption between the rubber and the filler. Styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) is composed of four components of styrene, cis‐1,4‐, trans‐1,4‐, and 1,2‐units. Filler–polymer interactions in both silica and carbon black‐filled SBR compounds were studied by analyzing microstructures of the bound rubbers with pyrolysis‐gas chromatography. Differences in the filler–polymer interactions of the styrene, cis‐1,4‐, trans‐1,4‐, and 1,2‐units were investigated. The filler–polymer interactions of the butadiene units were found to be stronger than that of the styrene unit. The interactions of the cis‐1,4‐ and trans‐1,4‐units were stronger with carbon black than with silica, whereas the 1,2‐unit interacted more strongly with silica than with carbon black. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The molecular statistical method for evaluating the distribution of active sites of various adsorbents relative to their energies has been improved. This method is used not only for the treatment of experimental data on the adsorption of hydrocarbons on various adsorbents, which is the usual procedure, but also data on the adsorption of polar water and methanol molecules on the active sites of adsorbent surfaces. Two types of active sites differing in energy have been shown to exist on the surface of graphitized carbon black, the complex shungite carbon/mineral adsorbent, and modified Silochrom. Chromatographic, calorimetric, and structural adsorption data were used to establish the relationship between the observed maxima of the energy distribution function of the adsorption sites with concrete adsorption sites or pores of the surface, on which the molecules are adsorbed. As environmental regulations are getting stricter, tire industries for automobiles have shown much interest in substituting silica for conventional carbon black partially or entirely. To take full advantage of silica as fillers for rubbers, it is essential to find a reasonable rubber system that shows an excellent performance with silica reinforcement. Therefore, in this study, several different rubber compounds comprising the same amount of silica were prepared with several different rubber systems, respectively. The processability, curing characteristics, and mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the rubber compounds were investigated to analyze the performance of the rubber compounds as tire tread materials. Among the rubber compounds studied, SBR1721 compound comprising natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) with high styrene content was considered the most appropriate for application to tire tread materials. The thermal behaviour of nitrile rubber (NBR)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) blends was studied by thermogravimetry. The effects of blend ratio, different crosslinking systems (sulphur, peroxide and mixed), various fillers (silica, clay and carbon black) and filler loading on the thermal properties were evaluated. It was found that the initial decomposition temperature increased with the addition of NBR to EVA. Among the various crosslinking systems studied, the peroxide cured system showed the highest initial decomposition temperature. This is associated with the high bond dissociation energy of C–C linkages. The addition of fillers improved the thermal stability of the blend. The mass loss at different temperatures and activation energy of degradation were also studied. The thermal ageing of these blends was carried out at 50 and 100°C for 72 h. It was seen that the properties are not affected by the mild ageing condition. Also, the peroxide cured system was found to exhibit better retention in properties, than other crosslinking systems. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The surface modifications produced by a RF plasma treatment on a thermoplastic styrene–butadiene–styrene rubber–SBS—with a considerable amount of processing oils in its formulation (TRO) have been studied and compared to the modifications produced on an oil-free SBS rubber (TRF). The modifications produced by the plasmas on the rubber surface depended on the nature of the gas used to generate the plasma. Thus, argon plasma favored the migration of processing oils to the TRO rubber surface, producing a weak oily layer that prevented interaction of rubber with a polyurethane adhesive. On the other hand, oxygen and carbon dioxide plasmas produced important ablation of the rubber surface which resulted in a partial (CO2 plasma) or total (O2 plasma) removal of processing oils from the rubber surface and the creation of polar moieties that increased adhesion of the rubber surface towards a polyurethane adhesive.  相似文献

We have carried out a two-step liquid-phase modification of amorphous silica Silokhrom-80 with polyethyl hydride siloxane and hexamethyldisilazane. Using the parameters of the Langmuir equation, we have determined the concentration of residual hydrophilic sites on the surface of the modified silica, and we have identified them. We have shown that two-step modification of silica by selected reagents makes it possible to completely deactivate the most active vicinal hydroxyl groups on the sorbent surface, and to deactivate its isolated hydroxyl groups to a significant extent. __________ Translated from Teoreticheskaya i éksperimental’naya Khimiya, Vol. 42, No. 2, pp. 125–129, March–April, 2006.  相似文献

Rubber articles derive most of their mechanical properties from the admixture of reinforcing fillers. Most commonly, carbon black is used as reinforcing filler. If silica is used instead, tyres made with such rubber compounds may exhibit a rolling resistance reduction by ca. 30%, which translates in substantial fuel savings of a car. Such silicas are far more difficult to mix with rubber than carbon black. Coupling agents are used as a surface modification of the filler to enhance compatibility with the polymer. Additionally they improve the ease of mixing with the rubber. The development of proper coupling agents combined with improved mixing techniques has contributed to the final break-through of the silicareinforced “Green Tyre”.  相似文献

Surface modification of silica by acetylene plasma polymerization is applied in order to improve the dispersion in and compatibility with single rubbers and their blends. Silica, used as a reinforcing filler for elastomers, is coated with a polyacetylene (PA) film under vacuum conditions. Water penetration measurements show a change in surface energy due to the PA‐film deposition. The weight loss measured by thermo‐gravimetric analysis (TGA) is higher for the PA‐coated silica compared to the untreated filler, confirming the deposition of the PA film on the silica surface. Time of flight‐secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) shows the well‐defined PA cluster peaks in the high mass region. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements show silica aggregates, coalesced by the coating with smooth and uniform surfaces, but without significant change in specific surface area. Elemental analysis by energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurements also confirms the deposition of the polymeric film on the silica surface, as the carbon content is increased. The performance of single polymers and their incompatible blends based on S‐SBR and EPDM, filled with untreated, PA‐ and silane‐treated silica, is investigated by measurements of the bound rubber content, weight loss related to bound rubber, cure kinetics, reinforcement parameter, Payne effect, and mechanical properties. The PA‐ and silane‐modified silica‐filled pure S‐SBR and EPDM samples show a lower filler–filler networking compared to the unmodified silica‐filled elastomers. Decrease in the reinforcement parameter (αF) for the plasma‐polymerized silica‐filled samples also proves a better dispersion compared to silane‐modified and untreated silica‐filled samples. On the other hand, the PA‐silica‐filled samples show a higher bound rubber content due to stronger filler–polymer interactions. Finally, the PA‐silica‐filled pure EPDM and S‐SBR/EPDM blends show high tensile strength and elongation at break values, considered to be the result of best dispersion and compatibilization with EPDM. Rice husk ash(RHA), obtained by pyrolysis of rice husks, can be used as a potential reinforcing filler for rubber composites. In this work, ball milling in ethanol(ethanol-assisted milling) was used to hydroxylate the surface of RHA, promoting the graft modification of bis-(γ-triethoxysilylpropyl)-tetrasulfide(Si69). The obtained modified RHA(RHA-EM-Si69) was filled into the natural rubber/butadiene rubber(NR/BR) composites, and the filler-rubber interactions were enhanced. In consequence, RHA-EM-Si69 filled NR/BR composites showed overall improvement in the mechanical properties compared with RHA filled NR/BR composites. The tear strength increased from 13.37 kN/m to 34.71 kN/m, and the tensile strength increased from 1.84 MPa to 7.75 MPa. Carbon black(N774) was also used for comparison under the same conditions. This method provides a potential for promoting the value of RHA in rubber industry.  相似文献

The effect of hot air exposure at 150 °C for up to 12 weeks (ca. 2000 h) on the properties of hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) compounds with varying degrees of carbon black content was investigated and reported in this paper. The composition of the HNBR was varied with 0, 10, 30 or 50 PHR carbon black. The tensile properties, hardness, density, solvent saturation swelling and carbon dioxide permeability of these specimens was investigated before and after exposure in a hot air oven. Correlations between these results are reported for the compounds considered in this work. These correlations illustrate how the changes in performance which would require test samples of specific geometries (such as tensile modulus or gas permeation) might in some cases be predicted by tests which do not require exact geometries (such as density or surface hardness), for the materials investigated in this paper.  相似文献

Ball-milling of N660 carbon black and graphite causes a deep activation of its surface activity which can be measured by a significant increase in the bound rubber level and in the amount of grafted rubber in comparison to the pristine untreated samples. The bound rubber measurement has been done also on a natural rubber masterbatch filled with extracted fullerene carbon black (EFCB). Also in this case extremely high levels of rubber grafting have been achieved in comparison to pure untreated graphite. It is discussed and demonstrated that the fullerene-like nanostructures in carbon blacks play a key role in the formation of bound rubber phenomenon and in grafting natural rubber on carbon black surface.  相似文献

Surface restructuring in ambient air of medical grade silicone rubber surfaces modified by repeated RF plasma treatments using various discharge gases including oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and ammonia, was studied quantitatively. From advancing and receding water contact angle data, the fraction of the surface covered by mobile and immobile polar groups, and a characteristic time constant of the restructuring process were calculated. For argon plasma treated surfaces, the fraction of immobile polar groups increased with repeated plasma treatments, but remained relatively constant for samples repeatedly treated by an ammonia plasma. The use of an oxygen plasma only yielded incorporation of mobile polar groups but not of immobile polar groups. The increase in the restructuring time constants of argon and ammonia plasma treated silicone rubber with the number of plasma treatments suggested enhanced crosslinking of the silicone rubber by these plasmas. In contrast, when an oxygen plasma was repeatedly used, the restructuring time constant decreased suggesting chain cleavage by an oxygen plasma. Tentatively, the carbon dioxide plasma treatment of silicone rubber may initially (up to 3–4 repeated treatments) yield chain cleavage, while the occurrence of crosslinking is indicated after more repetitions.  相似文献

The tensile stress relaxation of carbon-black-filled SBR was studied in the linear viscoelasticity region as a function of temperature and volume fraction of fillers. Time—temperature superposition was valid, and master relaxation curves were obtained. Carbon black increases the modulus of the compound, especially in the rubbery region, and the time range over which the glass-rubber transition occurred. The shift factor is divided into three regions; an Arrhenius dependence in rubbery and glassy states, and Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) dependence in the transition region. The apparent activation energy in the rubbery state increases with the volume fraction of carbon black (or silica) and is unaffected by the structure of the filler. The increase in activation energy is caused by the attachment of rubber chains to the carbon surface. At 30% elongation, the activation energy for carbon-black-filled rubber has a value of 32 kcal/mole, independent of structure and concentration of the filler.  相似文献

The paper deals with interactions between low molecular weight substances and silica. Activity of SiO2 towards ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) also depends on the kind of crosslinking system used. Calcium carbonate, the filler exhibiting low interactions with elastomers does not show any changes in activity, due to application of different crosslinking systems. In our opinion, the observed increase of the fillers activity results from the modification of elastomer chains by crosslinking agents, influence of the latter on the formation of its own network (the so called “structure”) in the elastomer matrix, and above all from nanoheterogeneous distribution of network crosslinks in vulcanizates. The non Gaussian probably bimodal distribution of crosslinks is likely to influence positively properties of elastomers. A similar effect is observed in peroxide vulcanizates of EPM produced with the use of the crosslinking coagents of polar nature. Behaviour of different kinds of carbon black in natural rubber (NR) crosslinked with dicumyl peroxide (DCP), sulphur donors or sulphur with accelerators is discussed. Reinforcing action of carbon black, particularly the active ones, showed to be more effective in sulphur than in peroxide vulcanizates.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to study gamma irradiation ageing of rubber blends based on acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and chlorosulphonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) reinforced by silica nano particles. The NBR/CSM compounds (50: 50, w/w) filled with different content of filler (0–100 phr) were crosslinked by sulfur. The vulcanization characteristics were assessed using the rheometer with an oscillating disk. The vulcanizates were prepared in a hydraulic press. The obtained materials were exposed to the different irradiation doses (100, 200, 300 and 400 kGy). The mechanical properties (hardness, modulus at 100% elongation, tensile strength and elongation at break) and swelling numbers were assessed before and after gamma irradiation ageing.  相似文献
