The dependence of the intensity of the 3p—3s,J = 0–1 lasing line at 32.6 nm in neon-like titanium on the prepulse level has been investigated experimentally. Titanium slabs were irradiated with 1.315 µm/450 ps pulses from the Asterix IV iodine laser using a defined prepulse of 5.2 ns before the main pulse. It is found that for pump energies close to the minimum energy for which lasing is observed, a prepulse level of order 0.5% gives the highest XUV laser intensity, whereas a higher prepulse level, of order 10% and more, is required for optimum XUV lasing far above the threshold. For a 2.7 cm long titanium target lasing was observed down to a pump irradiance of 2.5 TW/cm2 (50 J/450 ps) for the 0.5% prepulse.  相似文献

We have tested soft X-ray lasing in neon-like germanium with cylindrical targets where wave guiding and plasma confinement may affect lasing. An intense soft X-ray laser beam of 0.05 MW peak power and a narrow beam divergence (8 mrad) was produced at 23.6 nm with a 4 cm long straight cylindrical target of 0.72 mm inner diameter. Bending the cylindrical target to form a toroidal shape increased the lasing intensity by a factor of 3 accompanied with reduction of the beam divergence from 8 to 6 mrad.  相似文献

2 . By using a 0.7% prepulse that precedes the main pulse by 5 ns and applying a total pump energy of 100 J or less, the J=0-1 lasing is at least one order of magnitude higher than the non-lasing background. For the 32.6-nm line of Ti, the 25.5-nm line of Fe, and the 23.1-nm line of Ni, gain coefficients of (±) 4.20.4cm-1, (±) 3.90.3cm-1, and (±) 3.60.6cm-1, respectively, were measured for 2.4-cm-long curved targets, resulting in gain–length products of ∼10. Angle-resolved spectra indicate a beam divergence of 3 mrad (FWHM), typically. The space-resolved spectra show that the J=0-1 lasing lines are emitted from an approximately 60-μm-wide (FWHM) plasma region, whereas the nearby continuum emission is produced in a considerably broader plasma region of ∼250 μm. Lasing at 25.5 nm in neon-like iron was observed at a pump power as low as 180 GW (∼9 TW/cm2), with, however, considerable shot-to-shot scatter in the absolute laser output. A high power UV laser has been developed as a pump source for short wavelength (down to 1 nm) X-ray lasers. Various schemes are considered and theoretical analysis is discussed. Spectroscopic studies of laser-target interaction have been performed and, in particular, the effect of a prepulse on plasma generation has been investigated. Analysis of the observed spectra indicates that reduction of the prepulse energy results in a higher temperature plasma. Investigation of the interaction using thin layered targets is also presented. These data provide evidence for initially hot plasma conditions generated from target layers 150 Å. Discussions of proposed laser schemes at 1–5 nm are presented. Also at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ  相似文献

A Ni-like Mo soft x-ray laser (SXRLs) operating at 18.9nm has been demonstrated by employing a grazing incidence pumping scheme with 120m^3 in the 200ps pre-pulse and 140mJ in the 200fs main pulse. The SXRL gain is estimated to be 1.5-3cm^-1 when a grazing incidence angle of 14° is applied. Numerical simulations are also performed to investigate the dynamics of the ion distribution. It is found that a high intensity at 2.4× 10^14 W/cm^2 of the 200fs main pulse could heat the pre-plasma rapidly to an appropriate temperature for population inversion, and could compensate for the shortage of the total pump energy to a certain extent.  相似文献

We report lasing for the first time in nickel on the neon-like J=01, 3p3s transition at 231 Å as well as several weaker transitions including the J=2»1 lines at 298 Å and 304 Å. Amplification is seen only when the prepulse technique of using a low intensity prepulse before the main optical drive pulse is used to illuminate the nickel target. The prepulse technique is also shown to produce lasing in copper and dramatically improve the output of the germanium laser.  相似文献

We present an experimental report on the recent observation of lasing at 26.1 and 30.4 nm on the 3p 1 S 0–3s 3 P 1 [termedG((0–1)] and 3p 1 S 0–3s 1 P 1 [termedE(0–1)] transitions in Ne-like V, in which the normally weakG(0–1) transition was observed to lase more strongly than theE(0–1) transition. The experiment was performed on the Asterix IV iodine laser with a prepulse 5.23 ns before the main pulse. At a target length of about 2.5 cm, it was found that, while theG(0–1) andE(0–1) lines have comparable intensities in V, theE(0–1) line dominates spectra from Mn, Cr, Ti and Sc, which have adjacent nuclear charges. It was also found that the two lasers in V also have different temporal histories and spatial distributions. This is in contrast to the LASNEX + XRASER simulation, which predicts virtually similar temporal and spatial behavior for the two transitions. Hydrogen-like and helium-like X-ray spectra (between 7.1 and 8.2 , i.e., 1500 to 17.50 eV, respectively) from solid aluminium targets irradiated with high intensity (up to 1017 W/cm2) subpicosecond (0.7 ps) laser pulses have been measured. The spectra show that the resonance lines are very broad and very asymmetric. Evidence for a Doppler-shifted reabsorption of the resonance line emission has been found. The spectra have been simulated by a computer code for the calculation of spectral-line intensities and linewidths. Electron densities exceeding the critical density have been estimated for different laser intensities by comparing the observed and simulated intensity ratio of different dielectronic satellite lines. From the X-ray spectra generated byp- ands-polarized radiation fat different laser intensities, the thresholds for the formation of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions have been determined.  相似文献

The scaling of recombination XUV lasers to shorter wavelengths requires laser plasmas produced at initial electron densities close to solid. With pump laser pulses longer than a few tens of picoseconds the hydrodynamic motion of the plasma during the interaction makes this difficult to achieve. In contrast, when picosecond laser pulses are used the laser energy is absorbed close to solid density since the plasma expansion is insignificant during the laser pulse. This results in hot near solid density plasmas which are needed for hydrogenic recombination X-ray lasers operating in the water window. Experimental observations have shown that a fully ionized aluminium plasma with a temperature of about 400 eV and a density well above 1023 cm–3 is produced when an aluminium target is irradiated with a single 3.5 ps high power KrF laser pulse.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate a 13.9nm Ni-like Ag x-ray laser using a one-dimensional hydrodynamic code coupled with an atomic physics data package. The population inversion is transiently pumped by a grazing incident 0.5ps main pulse irradiating into an optimized plasma, which is generated by a normal incidence 300ps pulse and a subsequent grazing incidence 300ps pulse. The effect of the grazing-incidence angle on the source position of the output x-ray laser is investigated. Near zero deflecting angle is found for the peak output intensity of the Ni-like Ag x-ray lasers, with a small FWHM divergence of 5mrad. It is predicted that saturation can be achieved with a total pump energy of 165mJ.  相似文献

We point out that existing Ne-like X-ray lasers have sufficient brightness to be used as pump sources in resonant pump-fluorescence experiments, and we discuss some of the potential benefits and limitations of such experiments. In preliminary experiments, we have measured the line overlap of the Ne-like yttrium X-ray laser near 155 with 4f–3d transitions in H-like Na and He-like Mg. These experiments used a high-resolution grating spectrometer, and calibrated the wavelength of the yttrium laser by comparison against lines of known wavelength. The results indicate that the wavelength of the yttrium laser is 154.985 ± 0.025 , a factor of 2–4 improvement in precision over previous calibrations. We find that the yttrium laser is 100 m to the long-wavelength side of both the He-like Mg line and the H-like Na line, so that neither resonance is perfect; however, Stark broadening could improve the overlap in the latter scheme, and bulk Doppler shifting could improve both resonances. We also find a good resonance between the yttrium laser and an un-identified transition which we tentatively attribute to copper.  相似文献

Theoretical models and main numerical results concerning the pumping of H- and He-like ions in an expanding plasma are presented. The following types of short-wavelength schemes are considered: recombination in a freely expanding plasma fiber; recombination connected with photoionization of the ionic ground state by external radiation; photo-pumping of ionic levels by a Planck spectrum with a cut-off long-wave wing; and some modifications of the above schemes.  相似文献

L x-ray intensity ratios Le/Lγ, Lα/L7 and Lβ/Lγ for ^92U and ^90Th are measured by using 59.5keV incident photon energy at 110° and 125° scattering angles. The samples are located in the external magnetic field of intensities ±0.15T, ±0.30T, ±0.45T, ±0.60T and ±0.75T. The experimental results obtained for B = 0 are compared with the theoretical values calculated using Scofield's tables based on the Hartree Slater theory. The contribution to the alignment of the external magnetic field is discussed. It is observed that the L x-ray intensity ratios decrease with the increasing magnetic field intensity.  相似文献

Diffraction and transform-limited picosecond tunable pulses are generated from Spectro-temporal-Selection (STS) dye lasers by using a new extra-cavity filter. This filter is based on a grazing-incident grating and arranged in the configuration of a folded dispersive delay line. Thus, it provides both high spectral selectivity and controllable temporal compensation for elimination of pulse broadening. Direct production of diffraction- and transform-limited picosecond dye laser (10 µJ, 50 ps) pulses spectrally adjustable between 398 and 702 nm is demonstrated in a compact device, with 8 ns pump pulses from a nanosecond nitrogen laser.  相似文献

The effect of external magnetic field on the Kα and Kβ X-ray production cross-sections and K shell fluorescence yields for ferromagnetic elements Nd, Gd and Dy and paramagnetic elements Eu and Ho have been measured at the excitation energy of 59.5 keV γ -rays from 241Am radioactive source of strength 100 mCi in the external magnetic field of intensities ±0.75 T. Furthermore, I /I intensity ratios for these elements have been measured in the external magnetic field. The K X-rays from different targets were detected using a high resolution Si(Li) semiconductor detector. For B = 0, the measured K X-ray production cross-sections, K shell fluorescence yields and the I /I intensity ratios were compared with the experimental and theoretical data in literature. The results have shown that the fluorescence parameters as photoionization cross section, fluorescence yield, radiation rates and spectral linewidth can change when the irradiation is conducted in a magnetic field.  相似文献

24 infrared laser lines on atomic and ionic transitions have been observed in recombining plasmas by vaporizing and ionizing Cd, Pb, Sn, Zn, and Mg with low energy Nd:YAG or excimer pump-lasers. For operation and optimization of the recombination lasers separated plasma spots and a plasma confinement have been used. The operation of shorter wavelength systems by isoelectronic scaling is discussed.  相似文献

New target geometries for collisional excitation X-ray laser experiments (in nickel) were proposed, analyzed, and experimentally studied on the Glass Development Laser (GDL). Experiments using a short line focus lens with new target geometries showed general agreement with predictions. The new geometries are designed to yield a higher gain and reduced refraction due to: (1) a higher plasma density, (2) a wider lateral density profile, and (3) a concave lateral density profile. These new geometries were: (1) two parallel exploding (thin) foils, irradiated from one side only, (2) two ablating (thick) foils, one of which is irradiated on its inner face, and (3) an exploding foil in front of an ablating foil, irradiated by a single laser beam incident on the thin foil. New experiments with a long line focus are in progress. The intensity ratio of Ne-like and F-like Ni lines is used to deduce the temperature, and these results together with the absolute intensity, yield the density profile. The results show improvement achieved with the new target geometries: the density is higher (leading to a higher gain), and the concave density profile results in collimation rather than divergence of the X-ray laser beam. Theoretical developments included: (1) prediction of high gain on new type transitions in neon like ions involving the excitation of an inner (2s) electron, and (2) development of a ray tracing code for an amplifying medium of varying (e.g., collimating) lateral density profile. Results using this code are shown for concave lateral density profiles.  相似文献

Single shot ablation of metallic materials of aluminium, titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) and gold has been studied with 10 picoseconds (ps) laser pulses experimentally and theoretically. The ablation rate variation at high fluence was explained by a simplified predictive model based on critical-point phase separation (CPPS) theory. A comparison between experimental and numerical results inferred that CPPS may well be the dominant ablation mechanism for high fluence laser ablation at 10 ps laser duration.  相似文献

We identified for the first time the 3d 94d 1 S – 3d 94p 1 P line in Ni-like Nb at 204.2 Å that was predicted to show gain. When pumped with a train of pulses containing less than 1 J per pulse, significant emission was recorded at 204.2 Å following the second and the third pulses. We measured the small signal gain coefficient per Joule of incident laser energy to be 1.49±0.42 cm–1 J–1 for this laser transition, which is higher by several orders of magnitude than that reported for other collisional laser systems in this wavelength range.  相似文献

The effect of a short prepulse (0.5 ps) on soft X-ray spectra from a plasma generated by a high intensity KrF* laser pulse (main pulse: 0.5 ps, intensity I main=5.3×1015 W/cm2) on flat targets of Al and Cu has been studied in detail. The spectra have been measured as a function of the pulse separation t between the two pulses and the prepulse intensity I pre. It was found that both the overall emission and the line emission increased with t (at constant I pre) and with I pre (at constant t). In particular, lines in the shorter wavelength region had higher intensity. The influence of the prepulse on the line emission of specific transitions in the Al spectra was investigated systematicly. An explanation for the observed effects is given.  相似文献
