Analytical solutions for the peristaltic flow of a magneto hydrodynamic(MHD) Sisko fluid in a channel, under the effects of strong and weak magnetic fields, are presented. The governing nonlinear problem, for the strong magnetic field,is solved using the matched asymptotic expansion. The solution for the weak magnetic field is obtained using a regular perturbation method. The main observation is the existence of a Hartman boundary layer for the strong magnetic field at the location of the two plates of the channel. The thickness of the Hartmann boundary layer is determined analytically. The effects of a strong magnetic field and the shear thinning parameter of the Sisko fluid on the velocity profile are presented graphically.  相似文献

The effects of variable fluid properties and variable heat flux on the flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian Maxwell fluid over an unsteady stretching sheet in the presence of slip velocity have been studied. The governing differential equations are transformed into a set of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations and then solved with a numerical technique using appropriate boundary conditions for various physical parameters. The numerical solution for the governing non-linear boundary value problem is based on applying the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method coupled with the shooting technique over the entire range of physical parameters. The effects of various parameters like the viscosity parameter, thermal conductivity parameter, unsteadiness parameter, slip velocity parameter, the Deborah number, and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature profiles as well as on the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are presented and discussed. Comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases.  相似文献

This paper deals with the study of the effect of MHD on thin films of a micropolar fluid. These thin films are considered for three different geometries, namely: (i) flow down an inclined plane, (ii) flow on a moving belt and (iii) flow down a vertical cylinder. The transformed boundary layer governing equations of a micropolar fluid and the resulting system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by using shooting method. Numerical results were presented for velocity and micro-rotation profiles within the boundary layer for different parameters of the problem including micropolar fluid parameters, magnetic field parameter, etc., which are also discussed numerically and illustrated graphically.  相似文献

The effects of both magnetic field and wall slip conditions on the peristaltic transport of a Newtonian fluid in an asymmetric channel are studied analytically and numerically. The channel asymmetry is generated by propagation of waves on the channel walls travelling with different amplitudes, phases but with the same speed. The long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumptions are considered in obtaining solution for the flow. The flow is investigated in a wave frame of reference moving with velocity of the wave. Closed form expressions have been obtained for the stream function and the axial velocity component in fixed frame. The effects of phase difference, Knudsen number and magnetic field on the pumping characteristics and velocity field are discussed. Several known results of interest are found to follow as particular cases of the solution of the problem considered.  相似文献

We consider the time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations for the scattering or radiating problem from a 3-D object that is either a metallic surface coated with material layers (MCS) or a dichroic structure (DS) made up of multiple frequency selective surfaces (FSS) embedded in materials. Low or high order impedance boundary conditions (IBC) are employed to reduce the numerical complexity of the solution of this problem via an integral equation or a finite element formulation. An IBC links the tangential components of the electric field to those of the magnetic field on the outer surface of the MCS, or on the FSSs, and avoids the solution of Maxwell’s equations inside the inhomogeneous domain for a MCS or, for a DS, the meshing of the numerous unit cells in a FSS. Sufficient uniqueness conditions (SUC) are established for the solutions of Maxwell’s equations associated with these IBCs, the performances of which, when constrained by the corresponding SUCs, are numerically evaluated for an infinite or finite planar structure.

Summary Analytical and numerical solutions for the momentum and thermal boundary layer equations of a non-Newtonian power law fluid are presented. The flow is assumed to be under the influence of an external magnetic fieldB (x) applied perpendicular to the surface and an electric fieldE(x) perpendicular toB(x) and the direction of the longitudinal velocity in the boundary layer. For the power law fluid it is assumed that the shear stress is proportional to then-th power of the velocity gradient andn is called the flow index. The variations of the velocity fieldf′, the temperature field θ, the shear stress on the surfaceτ W , the displacement thicknessδ 1 and the momentum thicknessδ 2 with the magnetic-field parameter γ, the flow indexn, the heat transfer indexS and the Prandtl number Pr are studied. It is found that, if the outer flow velocityU(x) (potential flow) is proportional to the arc lengthx raised to a powerm, then the similarity solution for the thermal boundary layer equation is possible only whenm=1/3, which represents flow past a wedge of included angle π/2. It is established that the temperature of the wedge increases with the increase of γ, Pr,S and the decrease ofn. In general the magnetic field can be used as a heater for the surface of the wedge.  相似文献

The magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) steady and unsteady axisymmetric flows of a viscous fluid over a two-dimensional shrinking sheet are addressed. The mathematical analysis is carried out in the presence of a large magnetic field. The steady state problem results in a singular perturbation problem having an infinite domain singularity. The secular term appearing in the solution is removed and a two-term uniformly valid solution is derived using the Lindstedt–Poincaré technique. This asymptotic solution is validated by comparing it with the numerical solution. The solution for the unsteady problem is also presented analytically in the asymptotic limit of large magnetic field. The results of velocity profile and skin friction are shown graphically to explore the physical features of the flow field. The stability analysis of the unsteady flow is made to validate the asymptotic solution.  相似文献

A new robust and accurate Cartesian-grid treatment for the immersion of solid bodies within a fluid with general boundary conditions is described. The new approach, the Boundary Data Immersion Method (BDIM), is derived based on a general integration kernel formulation which allows the field equations of each domain and the interfacial conditions to be combined analytically. The resulting governing equation for the complete domain preserves the behavior of the original system in an efficient Cartesian-grid method, including stable and accurate pressure values on the solid boundary. The kernel formulation allows a detailed analysis of the method, and it is demonstrated that BDIM is consistent, obtains second-order convergence relative to the kernel width, and is robust with respect to the grid and boundary alignment. Formulation for no-slip and free slip boundary conditions are derived and numerical results are obtained for the flow past a cylinder and the impact of blunt bodies through a free surface. The BDIM predictions are compared to analytic, experimental and previous numerical results confirming the properties, efficiency and efficacy of this new boundary treatment for Cartesian grid methods.  相似文献

The boundary value problem for the stationary magnetohydrodynamics model of a viscous heatconducting fluid considered under inhomogeneous mixed boundary conditions for an electromagnetic field and the temperature and Dirichlet condition for the velocity is investigated. This problem describes the flow of an electricaland heat-conducting liquid in a bounded three-dimensional domain the boundary of which consists of several parts with different thermoand electrophysical properties. Sufficient conditions imposed on the initial data to provide for global solvability of the problem and local uniqueness of its solution are established.  相似文献

The phenomena of heat and mass transfer during the flow of non-Newtonian transfer are amongst the core subjects in mechanical sciences. Recently, the nanomaterials are among the eminent tools for improving the low thermal conductivity of working fluids. Therefore, in view of the existing contributions, this article presents a two-dimensional numerical simulation for the transient flow of a non-Newtonian nanofluid generated by an expanding/contracting circular cylinder. This critical review further explores the impacts of variable magnetic field, thermal radiation, velocity slip and convective boundary conditions. The basic governing equations for Williamson fluid flow are formulated with the assistance of boundary layer approximations. The non-dimensional form of partially coupled ordinary differential equations has been tackled numerically by utilizing versatile Runge–Kutta integration scheme. The momentum, thermal and concentration characteristics are investigated with respect to several critical parameters, like, Weissenberg number, unsteadiness parameter, viscosity ratio parameter, slip parameter, suction parameter, magnetic parameter, thermophoresis parameter, Brownian motion parameter, Prandtl number, Lewis number and Biot number. The outcomes of the systematic reviews of these parameters and forest plots are illustrated. The study reveals that multiple solutions for the considered problem occurs for diverse values of involved physical parameters. The computed results indicate that the friction and heat transfer coefficients are significantly raised by the magnetic parameter for upper branch solutions.  相似文献

Although boundary element methods have been applied to interior problems for many years, the numerical difficulties that can occur have not been thoroughly explored. Various authors have reported low-frequency breakdowns and artificial damping due to discretization errors. In this paper, it is shown through a simple example problem that the numerical difficulties depend on the solution formulation. When the boundary conditions are imposed directly, the solution suffers from artificial damping, which may potentially lead to erroneous predictions when boundary element methods are used to evaluate the performance of damping materials. This difficulty can be alleviated by first computing an impedance or admittance matrix, and then using its reactive component to derive the solution for the acoustic field. Numerical computations are used to demonstrate that this technique eliminates artificial damping, but does not correct errors in the reactive components of the impedance or admittance matrices, which then causes nonexistence and nonuniqueness difficulties at the interior resonance frequencies for hard-wall and pressure release boundary conditions, respectively. It is shown that the admittance formulation is better suited to boundary element computations for interior problems because the resonance frequencies for pressure release boundary conditions do not begin until the smallest dimension of the boundary surface is at least one half the acoustic wavelength. Aside from producing much more accurate predictions, the admittance matrix is also much easier to interpolate at low frequencies due to the absence of interior resonances. For the example problem considered, only the formulation using the reactive component of the admittance matrix produces accurate solutions as long as the surface element discretization satisfies the standard six-element-per-wavelength rule.  相似文献

The problem of flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in an axially symmetric pipe with small irregularities on the wall is considered. An asymptotic solution of the problem with the double-deck structure of the boundary layer and the unperturbed flow in the environment (the “core flow”) is obtained. The results of flow numerical simulation in the thin and “thick” boundary layers are given.  相似文献

In this analysis, the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of Casson fluid over a permeable stretching/shrinking sheet in the presence of wall mass transfer is studied.Using similarity transformations, the governing equations are converted to an ordinary differential equation and then solved analytically. The introduction of a magnetic field changes the behavior of the entire flow dynamics in the shrinking sheet case and also has a major impact in the stretching sheet case. The similarity solution is always unique in the stretching case, and in the shrinking case the solution shows dual nature for certain values of the parameters. For stronger magnetic field, the similarity solution for the shrinking sheet case becomes unique.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical solution for the steady mixed convection magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid over a porous shrinking sheet. The velocity of shrinking sheet and magnetic field are assumed to vary as power functions of the distance from the origin. A convective boundary condition is used rather than the customary conditions for temperature, i.e., constant surface temperature or constant heat flux. With the aid of similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are solved numerically, using the variational finite element method (FEM). The influence of various emerging thermophysical parameters, namely suction parameter, convective heat transfer parameter, magnetic parameter and power index on velocity, microrotation and temperature functions is studied extensively and is shown graphically. Additionally the skin friction and rate of heat transfer, which provide an estimate of the surface shear stress and the rate of cooling of the surface, respectively, have also been computed for these parameters. Under the limiting case an analytical solution of the flow velocity is compared with the present numerical results. An excellent agreement between the two sets of solutions is observed. Also, in order to check the convergence of numerical solution, the calculations are carried out by reducing the mesh size. The present study finds applications in materials processing and demonstrates excellent stability and convergence characteristics for the variational FEM code.  相似文献

Mathematical and numerical modeling of fluid flows in the domains with free boundaries under co-current gas flow is widely investigated nowadays. A stationary problem of fluid motion in a rectangular cavity with a non-deformed free boundary is studied in a two-dimensional statement. The tangential stresses created on the free boundary by an adjoint gas flow are considered to be a driving force for a fluid motion. The influence of the cavity geometry (cavity aspect ratio) and of the free boundary (length of the open part of the boundary) on the velocity field is investigated numerically. The simulations are carried out for different values of the gas Reynolds numbers. The characteristic values for the flow parameters as well as geometrical characteristics described in this paper are motivated by the main features of the CIMEX-1 experiments prepared for the International Space Station. The paper presents examples of the fluid flow structure in the open cavities and conclusions.  相似文献

The problem of nonlinear magnetic field diffusion in a substance metallized by shock compression is considered. The problem is solved numerically for various time dependences of the current through the conducting region (direct current, linearly increasing current, and the current increasing as the square root of the time). Nonlinear diffusion leads to qualitative changes in the structure of the current in the substance being metallized. In this case, the maximal current density is shifted from the conducting boundary (at which it is located in the case of linear diffusion) to the bulk of the conducting material. For strong nonlinear diffusion and an increasing boundary magnetic field, the current density peak may approach the shock front. The numerical solution obtained here is compared with the analytic solution obtained earlier for linear diffusion.  相似文献

The effects of thermal radiation on the MHD flow over a vertical and porous plate of an optically thin gray, electrically conducting, viscous and incompressible fluid are studied. The differential equations and their boundary conditions, describing the problemunder consideration, are dimensionalized and the numerical solution is obtained. The numerical results for the velocity and temperature profiles are shown for different dimensionless parameters entering the problem under consideration, such as the radiation parameter S, Grashof number G, Prandtl number P, and the magnetic parameter M.  相似文献

The flow of fluids with interfaces or free surfaces is of great interest in both basic and applied research. Despite enormous efforts to develop numerical methods for solving such flow problems, no undisputed standards have emerged yet. We compare here three different approaches for the problem of a liquid film falling down along a vertical wall under the action of gravity. Due to an instability, waves form on the film surface and a nontrivial flow pattern emerges. This provides a test case for two-phase flow simulation methods under conditions of practical relevance. The methods compared are a moving boundary method and a volume of fluid method implemented in commercial software packages and a new phase field method. A set of experimental data is used as a reference for the comparison. All three methods correctly reproduce the main features of the experiment; however, none are free of quantitative deviations from the data. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献
